After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 58
Chapter 58
An Zhaoyu spent a divorce cooling-off period anniversary night that she would never forget.
Actually, that’s not quite right—she completely forgot about the anniversary. Her mind was filled with nothing but Lu Shen’s command: Don’t make a sound.
The An residence actually had decent soundproofing. When everyone woke up the next morning, their expressions were perfectly normal; no one spared Lu Shen a second glance. However, Zhang Simeng looked a bit disappointed when she saw Lu Shen come out alone.
“Shen-shen, where is Xiao Yu?” He Nanchun asked on her behalf.
“Still sleeping,” Lu Shen sat down next to He Nanchun. “No need to wait for her. I doubt she’ll be up before noon.”
“Oh~” He Nanchun nodded with a smile, then asked with concern, “Is your hand sore?”
At that question, the smile on Zhang Simeng’s face vanished instantly.
“It’s not sore,” Lu Shen shook her head slightly. Rechargeable devices had their perks; they were the most environmentally friendly.
“We should still leave some breakfast for Xiao Yu. She might get up soon,” Zhang Simeng glanced toward the upstairs bedroom. She had to leave after breakfast and wanted to see An Zhaoyu before she went.
“We can make more when she wakes up,” Lu Shen said indifferently. She didn’t care about such trivialities.
“Xiao Yu likes these specific things,” Zhang Simeng remarked, implying that Lu Shen didn’t truly care for her wife’s preferences.
An Wenyao had left early for work, so there were only the three of them in the dining room, plus the baby who was busy “driving” around. He Nanchun wondered if it was just her imagination, but she felt a subtle hostility from Zhang Simeng toward Lu Shen.
“It’s alright, Xiao Meng. Xiao Yu isn’t a picky eater,” He Nanchun mediated. “Besides, Shen-shen has been with her for over two years. she knows what she likes to eat.”
He Nanchun wanted to emphasize that Lu Shen and An Zhaoyu were married and that Lu Shen had nothing to do with An Wenyao anymore. She didn’t realize that Zhang Simeng’s target was actually An Zhaoyu. She had inadvertently added fuel to the fire.
Zhang Simeng bit her lower lip, looking quite aggrieved.
An Zhaoyu, who had planned to sleep until midday, suddenly opened her eyes, threw on a jacket, and hurried out. “Mom, Lu Shen,” she yawned, her curls messy, radiating a lazy aura.
“Xiao Yu, you’re up!” Zhang Simeng had an “I told you so” look, her gloom vanishing. “Come eat breakfast.”
Seeing her, An Zhaoyu’s face darkened. She walked with a slightly stiff gait to Lu Shen’s side. “Where’s my brother?”
The moment she woke up and found Lu Shen gone, her first instinct was to find her. She was always worried An Wenyao might try to rekindle things.
“He went to the company long ago. Your brother is much more diligent than you,” He Nanchun joked.
“Of course. An Alpha won’t find a partner if they aren’t virtuous and hardworking,” An Zhaoyu plopped down next to Lu Shen, leaning her head on Lu Shen’s shoulder. “I’m different. I’m lucky. Holding onto my wife’s leg is the most important thing.”
If I don’t hold on tight, I definitely won’t be able to get up tomorrow. Her wife was formidable now; she even knew how to use electric tools.
“Smooth talker,” He Nanchun laughed. “Eat your food.”
An Zhaoyu didn’t even look at the breakfast Zhang Simeng pushed toward her. She took a bite of the waffle from Lu Shen’s plate. “Future Sister-in-law, my brother definitely hasn’t eaten either. If you’re so inclined, you could take some to him. The address is…”
“…Alright,” Zhang Simeng had no choice but to agree.
“By the way, Lu Shen,” An Zhaoyu tugged her sleeve. “Let’s have a wedding. What do you think?”
An Zhaoyu had thought about this for a long time. She felt it was bad luck to bring it up during the cooling-off period, but that was over now. She kept remembering how Lu Shen looked in a formal dress at Jiang Ling’s wedding. They had been married for two years without a ceremony; it felt unfair. Plus, it was a good way to annoy a certain “sister-in-law.”
“Auntie, Xiao Yu, I’ll go take breakfast to Wenyao now,” Zhang Simeng said, unable to listen further. She grabbed the lunch box and left.
“Xiao Meng, have the driver take you,” He Nanchun said, not minding her departure. She loved An Zhaoyu’s idea. “That’s a great plan. But what about Shen-shen’s mother?”
The wedding hadn’t happened back then because of Lu Ming, and Lu Ming still wasn’t well—she’d even had an episode recently.
“Mom… it might not be convenient for her to see many people,” Lu Shen said cautiously. Too many people were curious about Lu Ming, and she was an unstable factor. Lu Shen prioritized her safety over a ceremony.
“Then we won’t invite many people. Just family. How about that?” An Zhaoyu knew her concerns.
“Exactly! We won’t make it public,” He Nanchun added. She was dying to meet her brilliant in-law. “We can do it at the An house or the Lu house. We even have a ready-made flower girl.”
An Zhou “beep-beeped” over in her little car.
“Okay. I’ll discuss it with my mother,” Lu Shen conceded. She knew how much An Zhaoyu wanted this.
An Zhaoyu beamed and kissed her cheek. “I can go talk to her too.”
On the way to the Medical Center, An Zhaoyu invited Lu Shen: “Do you want to come see our new Area 1 at the training field?”
“Sure,” Lu Shen agreed. It had been a long time since she’d visited. With Wei Ruicheng gone, a weight had been lifted from her heart. At the vast field, the gloom seemed to vanish.
“Dr. Lu!” Wen Yuncheng spotted her immediately.
“Captain Wen,” Lu Shen nodded.
Wen Yuncheng scratched his head. He was now the Area 2 Captain, thanks to An Zhaoyu’s promotion. She had been strict with him over the last two years, but it was worth it. Many Area 2 members came over to say hello, their eyes darting to the couple’s joined hands.
What happened to the divorce? Why are they sweeter now than when they first married?
Lu Shen felt a bit self-conscious and tried to maintain some professional distance, but An Zhaoyu held her hand firmly, almost as if she were intentionally showing off.
“Dr. Lu is even prettier now. I’m jealous of the Captain.” “Next time, don’t let the Captain off so easy! Make her kneel on the remote control!” The team members, usually “oppressed” by An Zhaoyu, took the chance to snitch.
An Zhaoyu swatted them with a helmet. “Scram! Go train! Dr. Lu isn’t here to see you lot!” Even Captain Wen got a playful smack.
An Zhaoyu led Lu Shen from Area 2 to Area 1. Planes were flying overhead in orderly formation. The Omega pilots were training diligently, much quieter than the rowdy Alphas next door. This was the nature of Omegas: responsible and focused. The only downside? They were “overachievers.” Once these high-performers settled in, the other two areas were going to have a hard time keeping up with performance metrics.
“We have a small group, only seven pilots for now, but there will be more,” An Zhaoyu said with total confidence. The sky was her domain.
“I know,” Lu Shen replied. She knew An Zhaoyu had been in contact with university professors; now, fit Omegas across the country had a new career path—pilot. The internet fans even dubbed Captain An the “National Wife.”
Tsk. That title… I’ll settle that score with her later.
The wedding was discussed personally with Lu Ming. While Lu Shen was brushing her mother’s hair, An Zhaoyu sat nearby to talk about the ceremony.
“We’ll hold it here at the Lu house so you don’t have to travel far.” An Zhaoyu was still worried Lu Ming might be reluctant to step outside the stone fortress where she’d lived for years. The Lu estate had no neighbors and was in the middle of nowhere, but it was beautiful and perfect for a private wedding.
“A wedding! Yes!” Lu Ming agreed readily. She sat in a lounge chair outside, draped in a white cloth while Lu Shen trimmed her hair. For years, she hadn’t left the house, so Lu Shen did the cutting. Lu Shen moved the scissors with the grace of someone pruning a delicate flower. An Zhaoyu hadn’t known she had this skill, though given Lu Shen’s indoor rainforest, she wasn’t entirely surprised. The doctor was gifted with her hands.
“Mom, is this length okay?” Lu Shen asked. Lu Ming looked in a mirror. “Why is it not as pretty as before?”
“It’s always like this right after a cut,” Lu Shen blew away the loose hair. “You’re just not used to it yet.”
“Xiao Zhao, what do you think? I feel ugly,” Lu Ming complained. “You look beautiful! You’re lucky to have such service,” An Zhaoyu reassured her. Lu Shen had never cut her hair—only her nails.
“Aunt Lu, did you and Aunt Jiang have a wedding too?” An Zhaoyu asked, shifting to small talk. Lu Shen paused; she didn’t even know the answer to that.
“What counts as a wedding?” Lu Ming squinted against the sun. “The priest over there wouldn’t give us one. But we made our vows secretly while feeding pigeons in front of the church.”
Back then, Lu Ming was using an Alpha identity, but Jiang Nian’s situation was “sinful” in the eyes of the church because she had no uterus. Jiang Nian was from a war-torn country. As a young Omega, she had been captured. To survive, she had chosen to undergo a hysterectomy before entering the camp, refusing to bring a child into a world of such suffering. She was brilliant, multilingual, and manipulative. She eventually navigated her way into an all-female Alpha camp. Before meeting Lu Ming, she had slept with many Alphas who wanted to possess her, but she never gave them her heart. Only “silly” Lu Ming had managed that.
“Then that definitely counts! Vows make it a wedding,” An Zhaoyu said quickly. “Just two people and the pigeons as witnesses—that’s very romantic.”
Lu Shen felt her heart steadying. She finally understood how these two got along so well.
They sat in the Lu family hall, listing guests. Aside from the Ans and Lus, Lu Shen planned to invite Jiang Ling and Wei Qing.
“That’s enough. Too many people will upset Aunt Lu,” An Zhaoyu said cautiously. She was mindful of Lu Ming’s secret—that she was actually an Omega. Lu Congwen was already suspicious after the last incident.
“We can’t invite Wen Xuan. She’s too perceptive,” An Zhaoyu said, crossing out Wen Xuan’s name.
Lu Shen chuckled softly. “Why are you laughing?” An Zhaoyu asked. Lu Shen decided Wen Xuan’s identity couldn’t stay a secret forever, and she didn’t want to give her any more chances. She whispered into An Zhaoyu’s ear:
“She is one too.”
“Who?” An Zhaoyu blinked. “Wait… really? She’s an Omega?” Lu Shen nodded. “No wonder! I always felt she was different from Grandma,” An Zhaoyu smirked. “Does Jiang Ling know?”
“The countdown has started,” Lu Shen replied.
An Zhaoyu felt a surge of schadenfreude. “Wow, what a scoundrel. A ‘crematorium’ ending is mandatory for her.” Some people who have been rained on want to tear down others’ umbrellas; An Zhaoyu had been rained on, so she wanted Wen Xuan to stand in acid rain. “Then we definitely can’t invite her. She’s always looking at you anyway.”
Lu Shen rubbed her temples, seeing An Zhaoyu using this as an excuse for a personal vendetta.
“Shen-shen, can we send an invitation to your professor too?” Lu Yi walked in, looking a bit shy. “Professor Fu?”
“Yes. I still owe her a meal.”
“You can invite her separately for that,” Lu Shen eyed her aunt. “Why invite her to a family wedding at our home?”
“Oh, I just thought… since it’s convenient,” Lu Yi stammered, her eyes darting away. “Convenient to bring her home?” An Zhaoyu’s gossip radar pinged. “Dr. Lu, I sense something fishy between Auntie and Professor Fu. I recommend a thorough investigation!”
“What investigation…” Lu Yi’s face flushed red. “Never mind then. Shen-shen is right, I’ll invite her privately some other time.” She tried to run, but An Zhaoyu caught her. “Auntie, why are you running?”
“I was at the Professor’s lab the other day,” Lu Shen added calmly. “I saw a whole pile of tissues from Auntie’s crying.”
“Whoa! That sounds intense! Are we sure it was from crying and not… something else?” An Zhaoyu exclaimed. Lu Yi’s face turned as red as a boiled lobster. “I didn’t think you and the Professor played so hard. You’re both Alphas! You look so proper, and the Professor is even more serious. Tsk tsk,” An Zhaoyu’s voice echoed in the hall.
Lu Shen remained silent. An Zhaoyu had jumped to the exact same conclusion she had. Lu Yi couldn’t take the teasing and bolted out of the room.
“Add the Professor’s name to the list,” Lu Shen said helplessly.
