After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 50
Chapter 50
The following day, Wei Ruicheng was rushed to the medical center by an ambulance. He had been brutally tortured by his own pheromones all night long. Having endured the transition from violent mania to his current state, he was now utterly exhausted, his face ashen, paralyzed on the hospital bed in a cold sweat.
The Wei family searched everywhere for Lu Shen. She simply stated that his condition likely required surgery and that treatment had to take place at the hospital; after all, she had no intention of taking the risk of a private “out-of-office” surgery for a man like Wei Ruicheng.
“Dr. Lu, please save him,” pleaded Wei Ruicheng’s newest Omega wife, the biological mother of Wei Jinlin.
She looked hardly better than Wei Ruicheng himself. She had likely stayed by the Alpha’s side all night and bore many bruises and marks; she looked quite disheveled. Nearby, Liang Wei shook her head. Why are they so attracted to trash? Does marriage actually lower an Omega’s IQ? It was enough to make her fear marriage herself.
“President Wei’s pheromone concentration is too high; his glands cannot withstand it. There is only one way to save him,” Lu Shen’s expression was composed and calm, no different from her attitude toward any other patient. “The only way is to remove the glands.”
“No!” The weakened Wei Ruicheng on the bed snapped his eyes wide open upon hearing this. The veins on his forehead bulged tightly, and his normally neat hair was a complete mess.
“Then, President Wei, do you choose to endure this pain forever?” To Lu Shen, that would certainly be a better outcome.
“No… you must have a way. You prescribed me painkillers before…” Wei Ruicheng’s face was full of agony. His glands could not be removed; they were what he cared about most. An Alpha without glands was essentially a useless person; he could never accept such a result.
He was an SSS-rank Alpha!
“The painkillers—I assume you took them at home. Did they feel useful?” Lu Shen stood by his bed, looking down at him.
To take revenge on someone, the greatest pleasure comes from destroying them mentally. Originally, if he just lost his glands, he would still be alive, but for Wei Ruicheng, it wasn’t that simple. Glands and pheromones were the source of his confidence and the capital he used to trample on others’ lives. Now, Lu Shen was going to excise all of his capital and confidence. Her years of medical study would not go to waste.
Saving a person who has already been hurt is difficult, but for someone like Wei Ruicheng, who had harmed so many innocent people, medical science wasn’t meant to save him—removing the tumor was the fundamental solution.
“There must be another way… there’s another way, right?” Wei Ruicheng’s body seemed drained, his muscles and bones as weak as crushed fabric. Unable to support himself, he could only feebly grasp the hem of Lu Shen’s white coat like a drowning man clutching at a straw. “Whatever you want, I can give it to you.”
“Dr. Lu, save him,” the Omega beside him couldn’t bear to see him like this, wiping away tears as she begged Lu Shen. Only Wei Qing stood at the foot of the bed with a grim expression, watching them coldly.
“President Wei, if there were any other treatment method, I would certainly inform you. That is my duty,” Lu Shen said slowly. “But your current pheromone concentration is too high. There is no other way besides excision.”
Lu Shen’s words were like a death sentence. Wei Ruicheng’s arm fell limply to the side of the bed, his fingertips trembling slightly. A deep grey defeated look filled his eyes, as if all energy had been siphoned away, leaving only a void.
“These are the informed consent forms, the power of attorney, anesthesia consent, and blood transfusion consent. Make your own decision,” Lu Shen had Liang Wei print the hard copies.
“What are you doing?” An Zhaoyu caught a sleazy Alpha eavesdropping on the conversation as soon as she arrived.
“She’s doing it on purpose! She’s framing my father!” Wei Jinlin’s eyes were blood-red with thick hatred, clearly directed at Lu Shen. The Wei family had been targeted by various companies lately, and Wei Ruicheng had invested heavily in the E-agent and the promotion of the new inhibitor. Now that even his glands couldn’t be saved, even a fool like Wei Jinlin could see that Lu Shen was behind it.
An Zhaoyu immediately grew tense. There was no telling if this idiot would do something to hurt Lu Shen out of desperation. Just then, Lu Shen walked out from inside. Wei Jinlin immediately lunged at her. “Bitch! I’ll kill you!”
Caught off guard, Lu Shen was startled. An Zhaoyu stepped in and grabbed Wei Jinlin, but he had gone somewhat mad and started brawling indiscriminately. He even released his pheromones to suppress An Zhaoyu. Stimulated by the sudden burst of pheromones, An Zhaoyu’s body went soft, and she was kicked in the shoulder.
This triggered An Zhaoyu’s rebellious streak. Her own high rank allowed her to adapt quickly and adjust her state. She always carried the inhibitor Lu Shen had given her and, without hesitation, injected one into her glands. As Wei Jinlin grabbed Lu Shen, An Zhaoyu kicked him hard in the arm.
The two began to fight. Lu Shen hurried to the nurse’s station to call for Alpha security and isolated Liang Wei and the other Omega medical staff affected by the pheromones. Watching Wei Jinlin and An Zhaoyu fight was agonizing for Lu Shen. An Zhaoyu was, after all, an Omega, and she was at a physical disadvantage fighting a crazed Alpha; she was clearly struggling. Lu Shen didn’t dare call out, fearing it would distract An Zhaoyu.
Just then, Jiang Chu arrived. She froze for a second seeing An Zhaoyu fighting an Alpha, but seeing the Alpha’s target seemed to be Lu Shen, she shed her lab coat and joined the fray. With her help, An Zhaoyu found an opening and landed a heavy elbow strike to the back of Wei Jinlin’s neck. Security then rushed in, pinning Wei Jinlin to the floor. When he continued to struggle violently, the guards gave him a taste of their electric batons.
“Lu Shen, are you okay?” Wei Jinlin had grabbed her earlier, and An Zhaoyu was worried sick. Lu Shen was usually so delicate; even a slightly firm touch from An Zhaoyu would leave a mark. Sure enough, looking down, An Zhaoyu saw bruises in the shape of five fingers on Lu Shen’s arm where Wei Jinlin had grabbed her.
“I’m fine,” Lu Shen said. She saw no injuries on An Zhaoyu’s face, though she had clearly seen Wei Jinlin land several blows and that kick. Looking lower, she saw finger marks on her own neck—Wei Jinlin had tried to choke her, but she had fought back by poking his eyes, forcing him to let go.
“Come with me,” Lu Shen pulled her into the treatment room. Seeing this, Jiang Chu knew she had no chance. She picked up her lab coat and went elsewhere to cool down.
An Zhaoyu had imagined Lu Shen taking her clothes off countless times, but never like this. Once she was sure there were no broken bones, Lu Shen brought several ice packs and bandaged them to the injured spots.
“Sss, it’s so cold!” An Zhaoyu shrunk back from the chill, yet her mind was still on other things. “This is actually quite stimulating.”
If she weren’t a patient, Lu Shen would have liked to put an ice cube in her mouth as well.
“It hurts a bit,” An Zhaoyu said. Wei Jinlin had used a lot of force on that shoulder kick. She suspected a fracture, but Lu Shen’s examination showed none. The flight suit had a significant shock-absorption effect, sparing the Captain from much of the damage. However, seeing the red mark on her shoulder, Lu Shen felt a pang of heartache. She was an Omega; this red bruise would turn purple and green later—it wouldn’t look pretty. She wouldn’t be able to wear off-the-shoulder clothes for a long time.
“Give me a hug and it won’t hurt,” An Zhaoyu started talking nonsense again. She lay half-reclined on the hospital bed covered in a blue disposable pad, her clothes half-off to expose the injury. She thought Lu Shen would ignore her—after all, it had taken a long struggle to escape that the other day—but Lu Shen actually leaned over and gave her a gentle hug.
?!! If I’d known, I would have asked for a kiss! An Zhaoyu felt deep regret at the missed opportunity.
However, Dr. Lu’s hug lasted quite a while, and… was she using her hands to touch her? Massaging and rubbing? An Zhaoyu’s face turned red.
“That’s enough,” Lu Shen said, straightening up once she saw she was lively. “I was just checking for other injuries. Don’t misunderstand.”
“Does Dr. Lu check everyone’s injuries like this?” An Zhaoyu’s eyes twinkled. She was rewarded with the cold sight of Dr. Lu’s back as she walked away.
Outside, Wei Jinlin had been brought under control. A surgeon had to be called to look at his injuries. Wei Qing stood outside the ward, looking worried.
“Lu Shen, are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Lu Shen shook her head. The one who had “something wrong” was An Zhaoyu.
Then An Zhaoyu, dressed and with an ice pack tied to her neck, came out of the treatment room. “I’m fine too. Carry on.”
“He already signed the consent form,” Wei Qing said. Wei Ruicheng was nearly driven mad by the pheromone torture; the pain was too much. According to Liang Wei, the level of pain he was currently experiencing was roughly equivalent to childbirth and had lasted almost all night.
He can’t handle just this? Wei Qing had originally hoped he could hold out for a few more days to experience what it felt like to be an Omega, since he wouldn’t have the chance in the future.
“Good. The surgery can be done today,” Lu Shen called Liang Wei to arrange the details, making Liang Wei the second assistant.
It looked like she’d be working late today. An Zhaoyu planned to stay at the medical center until the surgery was finished.
“Wei Qing, your brother… oh wait, that ‘Little Psycho’ will probably cause more trouble for Lu Shen,” An Zhaoyu sat on the waiting chair, her gaze worried.
“Is Xiao Zhou okay?” Wei Qing sat beside her. She didn’t want to see the weeping Omega stepmother in the ward; it reminded her of her own cold-blooded biological mother.
“She’s fine,” An Zhaoyu said casually. Her parents both doted on their little granddaughter. He Nanchun usually took care of her personally, and even when busy, there were several bodyguards following the baby, fearing such a cute little thing might be kidnapped. She and Lu Shen were even more careful; they always made sure one of them was with the baby.
“That’s good. As for that… Little Psycho,” Wei Qing adopted the nickname. “I have a plan.”
Wei Jinlin was erratic. He probably read too many novels and wanted to hire someone to stage a car accident for Lu Shen, but his every move was already under Wei Qing’s watch.
“I’m sending him to jail!” An Zhaoyu’s temper flared when she heard he dared to try that.
“Wait a moment.”
Wei Jinlin had just woken up. He was placed in the bed next to Wei Ruicheng, separated only by a curtain.
“Mr. Wei, actually you don’t need to worry too much. There are other ways to potentially recover,” came Liang Wei’s voice. Hearing this, Wei Jinlin thought, As expected, that bitch Lu Shen is lying to Dad! He was about to get up to settle scores with her, but his body hadn’t recovered and was still numb and weak. He then heard Liang Wei lower her voice:
“You know current medical technology. Organ transplants have become very advanced. Kidney and liver transplants are common, and in theory, gland transplants are possible as well. Six months after the excision, once the pheromones in your body have completely vanished, you can theoretically consider a transplant. For a transplant, the closer the blood relation, the easier the HLA matching.”
Cough, cough. Wei Ruicheng let out a ragged breath. He had been tortured by pheromones for too long and was in extreme pain, but hearing Liang Wei’s words, hope sprouted from his despair.
“This surgery can be done in the gland department of most top-tier hospitals. You don’t need to worry too much.”
These words killed Wei Jinlin’s thought of silencing Lu Shen. If every gland doctor in the country could do it, Lu Shen was no longer a threat. Now, his “dear father” was.
After the doctors left, Wei Ruicheng spoke to his wife. “Where is Jinlin?”
Wei Jinlin froze instantly. He had been knocked out earlier and brought in by nurses; his parents didn’t even know it was him, as he had gone out drinking with his friends the night before and hadn’t returned. The medical center, being a public hospital, had no VIP private rooms. Every bed was scarce, and even the hallway had people in temporary beds.
“You aren’t… thinking of using Jinlin’s glands, are you?” the Omega’s eyes turned red again. “He’s your biological son.”
Hmph, what’s a biological son compared to my own glands? Wei Ruicheng thought. If he wanted Alpha children, couldn’t he have as many as he wanted? He just hadn’t let those Omegas outside give birth like that old man Lu Congwen, because he was still living in He Linghan’s shadow.
“It’s fine. Jinlin was never that smart anyway,” Wei Ruicheng coaxed the Omega in a gentle voice. “We can have more Alpha babies later.”
An Zhaoyu and Wei Qing, hearing this, felt a wave of disgust. They hadn’t forced Wei Ruicheng to say this. They had only intended to scare Wei Jinlin, but the effect was unexpectedly good. It seemed Jiang Ling was right; sometimes it’s worth reading more novels. This “gland transplant” was an inspiration Wei Qing got from “dog-blood” tragedy novels where Omega protagonists always had their kidneys or hearts cut out. Lu Shen said that there hasn’t actually been a successful gland transplant in the world yet because it involves massive ethical issues—like if Wei Ruicheng transplanted his son’s gland, would the children he had later call him “Father” or “Grandfather”?
Hearing this, Wei Jinlin felt a chill to his core. His father had always been good to him; he’d never suffered any grievances since childhood. Even though his mother wasn’t the first wife, he enjoyed the best care like a legitimate heir. He had been relieved to differentiate as an Alpha, thinking it was a “iron rice bowl”—once gender is set, it doesn’t change. He had enjoyed that privilege for years. An Omega like Wei Qing could never catch his father’s eye no matter how hard she worked; even her own mother loathed her. She was just a target for those who hated the Wei family, while the company would eventually be his.
But he never expected that his loving father would be cruel enough to want his glands! And his doting mother didn’t even object! A chill climbed from his feet to his head, followed by a thick wave of hatred. How could they treat me like this?
Once the preoperative preparations were complete, Wei Ruicheng’s bed was wheeled to the surgical floor. There were many operating rooms, with multiple surgeries happening simultaneously. The bed slid across the smooth floor, the wheels letting out a faint “creak” that filled him with growing dread. The automatic doors to his operating room opened slowly, revealing a bright, white space. Medical equipment and monitors hung on the walls, and the intense scent of disinfectant was sharp and cool. As the bed stopped in the center of the room, he felt a wave of dizziness.
Lu Shen, having washed her hands and dressed in green surgical scrubs, held her arms in the sterile zone across her chest. She waited for the circulating nurse to count the items and for the anesthesiology colleagues to administer the drugs.
“Lu Shen…” Wei Ruicheng’s voice trembled. He felt like a lamb for the slaughter.
“President Wei, our surgeries follow standard procedures and are entirely sterile. You don’t need to worry,” Lu Shen wore two layers of masks. Her voice wasn’t clear, but she was mocking his company for not being “standard” enough.
“Is there really no other way?” Helplessness showed in his eyes.
“Do you wish to cancel the surgery?” Lu Shen asked calmly. Normally, when it doesn’t involve others’ safety, a conscious patient has the right to cancel at any time.
“No…” Survival was most important. He still had the “transplant.” Wei Ruicheng closed his eyes in pain. As the cold anesthesia entered his blood, he felt as if the person operating on him had become Lu Ming—Lu Ming getting her revenge, carving out his glands piece by piece.
It was just Lu Shen’s cold gaze.
Lu Shen maintained her duties as a doctor. After she cleanly removed Wei Ruicheng’s glands, she sent them to the pathology department. Such disgusting things would only pollute the environment if thrown in the sea; better to let pathology colleagues slice them for medical students to observe. A specimen with such high-concentration pheromones was rare. After the excision, she sutured the wound. New granulation tissue would grow there, but he would completely lose the ability to produce pheromones.
Transplant? He can dream. On the way there, he had been asking Lu Shen about transplants. Lu Shen ignored him.
While Lu Shen was in surgery, An Zhaoyu sat outside waiting, fearing Wei Jinlin hadn’t given up on his malicious intent. Not long after, she received a call from Lu Yi. Lu Yi’s voice sounded anxious:
“Xiao Yu, why can’t I get through to Shen-shen?” “She’s in surgery,” An Zhaoyu said. “Then can you come to the Lu house? The old man secretly went to see my sister just now. She was triggered by him, and her emotions are very unstable right now.”
An Zhaoyu glanced at Wei Qing, who nodded, indicating she would watch over Lu Shen here. “Okay, I’m coming right now,” An Zhaoyu stood up decisively.
