After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 33
Chapter 33
Lu Shen heard her words loud and clear.
Under the inquisitive gazes of those Omega classmates, Lu Shen led An Zhaoyu away.
An Zhaoyu wasn’t heavy, but she couldn’t stand steadily on her own, her steps swaying. Lu Shen picked her up and carried her all the way to the backseat of the car.
“Are you alright?” Lu Shen leaned over to ask.
An Zhaoyu kept her eyes open but didn’t quite believe the person in front of her was real. She didn’t answer.
Receiving no response, Lu Shen sighed inwardly and stood up to return to the driver’s seat. Only then did An Zhaoyu subconsciously reach out to grab her, but the car door had already closed.
A drunk person is always a beat behind.
For some reason, An Zhaoyu’s heart suddenly began to flutter with panic. The way Lu Shen had looked at her just now was far too gentle.
She had a premonition: she was about to lose that gentleness very soon.
Lu Shen didn’t go to the An house to pick up the baby. She notified He Nanchun, asking her to look after Xiao Zhou for the night; He Nanchun, of course, agreed. One drunk An Zhaoyu was trouble enough, and He Nanchun wanted to help shoulder the burden.
Lu Shen drove directly back to their home.
It felt like the first time the house was occupied by just the two of them. Lu Shen carried An Zhaoyu inside.
Today, An Zhaoyu was wearing a black shirt with black cargo pants and boots. Compared to her past style, this outfit felt dull. Lately, she seemed to prefer these monochrome palettes of black, white, and gray.
It had been this way since she returned from the competition. She was no longer the vibrant, flamboyant presence in Lu Shen’s field of vision; she was like a sunflower that had lost the sun, gradually replaced by shadows.
Lu Shen preferred her eyes full of light. A young, confident Omega girl should be a bright, radiant youth.
Is it I who made you like this?
Lu Shen gently held the only vibrant thing on her—the small “hook” of her red hair tips. The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she didn’t ask.
She didn’t know how much An Zhaoyu had drunk or how many types of alcohol she had mixed, but Lu Shen still felt she smelled good—the unique soft fragrance of an Omega girl that had nothing to do with pheromones.
An Zhaoyu watched her, her eyes full of confusion.
I must be dreaming, she thought. Only in a dream would Lu Shen be this gentle, with eyes full of love that made her forget the existence of pheromones and glands—to forget everything.
Lu Shen placed her gently on the bed in the study and leaned down to kiss her.
This was the first time Lu Shen had initiated a kiss. An Zhaoyu closed her eyes and enjoyed it; only the Dr. Lu in her dreams would act like this.
In the dream, Lu Shen also actively unbuttoned her shirt.
She would love her properly.
An Zhaoyu was absolutely certain this was a dream because Lu Shen was doing exactly what happened in her fantasies.
Normally, Lu Shen didn’t like doing anything with an incoherent An Zhaoyu, but this time was an exception. Because this was the last time, she wanted to follow her heart.
An Zhaoyu started the story; she would finish it.
They were even.
At 2:00 AM, Lu Shen sat at the desk in the study wrapped in a coat. She pulled open the drawer.
She had seen those two divorce agreements long ago. The date on them showed that An Zhaoyu had signed them before the competition. Lu Shen had assumed An Zhaoyu left them out of fear that something might happen during the race, so she had pretended not to see them. Now, Lu Shen had changed her mind.
She picked up a pen and signed her name in the blank space on the agreement.
As she signed, Lu Shen recalled An Zhaoyu’s words and couldn’t help but shake her head.
The teenage An Zhaoyu had said she was too gentle and couldn’t tame her. Lu Shen accepted that; she had never once thought about taming An Zhaoyu.
But what about now?
An Zhaoyu, it was you who plucked the moon, yet you complained of its coldness.
She could never satisfy An Zhaoyu.
An Zhaoyu slept until noon the next day. She woke up in the master bedroom, her clothes changed by Lu Shen. She had slept comfortably.
Lu Shen wasn’t in the room, nor was the baby. Fragments of half-awake memories lingered in her mind, and she subconsciously touched the gland on the back of her neck.
It was calm. Last night hadn’t been her heat. She looked down at her collar; her body was clean, with no marks. Lu Shen wasn’t as fierce as she was and rarely left marks on her.
Yet the feeling of last night was so real.
Her heart was racing, and her head was a mess. It felt very much like that day when she learned from a classmate that Lu Shen had suddenly gone abroad.
Lu Shen had left without warning, cutting off all contact. An Zhaoyu was almost the last person in the class to find out. She had never been treated like that before.
From childhood to adulthood, she had never failed to get what she wanted. With a beckon of her finger, everyone fell for her, willingly staying by her side.
When she first saw Lu Shen, An Zhaoyu didn’t think it was a big deal. A cold beauty? I’ve seen plenty of those. In high-society circles, there were many who were “cold” in public but God-knows-what in private.
The crazed, the paranoid, the scheming, the “green teas”—which kind hadn’t she seen? Including those who used a cold persona to attract foolish, lustful Alphas to slowly plot for their fortune. An Zhaoyu could see through them in a glance.
She had proactively offered to help her shy Alpha brother pursue Lu Shen. She used every trick she knew for pursuing an Omega on Lu Shen. She made sure the whole school knew she was chasing her.
Lu Shen politely rejected her every time.
This Beta girl had blue eyes that seemed to lack desire for anything, yet time and again, she would seriously bend down to pick up the paper airplanes An Zhaoyu threw carelessly and put them back in the desk. When An Zhaoyu complained to her Omega friends and received only perfunctory answers, Lu Shen would silently and patiently listen to her dreams.
Lu Shen never answered her, but An Zhaoyu could feel that Lu Shen was truly listening.
For the first time, An Zhaoyu felt someone in the world truly understood her. Lu Shen understood her moods and thoughts even without her saying a word.
But back then, she didn’t know that her feelings for Lu Shen were love.
Everyone told her that an Omega could only feel love for an Alpha. She had heard of pairings between Omegas like Zhang Simeng, but she had never been interested in Alphas or other Omegas. In Omega circles, Alphas were the natural choice, Omegas were a taboo, and no one even mentioned Betas.
So, she comfortably approached Lu Shen under the guise of helping her brother. The pursuit methods she learned online had long since turned into genuine sincerity without her noticing. She only wanted to hand the best of everything to Lu Shen, yet she remained oblivious.
It wasn’t until Lu Shen left and completely vanished from her life that she realized she was in trouble.
Lu Shen wasn’t the only one who had fallen.
Her enthusiasm, her first emotional investment—it was all declared a failure. Lu Shen didn’t even leave her a possibility, leaving so decisively. She couldn’t accept it.
So, she refused to admit the fact that she loved Lu Shen. As long as she didn’t love her, she hadn’t lost anything; she wouldn’t be sad or miss her. It was just a failure to help her brother get a girlfriend, not her own failure. What was there to regret?
She swore never to pursue anyone else.
When she met Lu Shen again, she was actually still angry. The moment she saw Lu Shen kissing Lucia, she easily reignited her obsession. She was unwilling; she wanted the person Lu Shen leaned down to kiss to be her.
She did it on purpose.
Purposefully catching that gauze, purposefully following Lu Shen’s car, purposefully barging into Lu Shen’s room. Her body went out of control, involuntarily provoking Lu Shen, yet she tried to force her brain to refuse to love her. She was a walking contradiction.
She constantly told herself she would leave after the inhibitor. At most, she would demand an explanation: Why did you leave so suddenly back then?
But when she saw Lu Shen’s cold expression, all the emotions she had suppressed for years suddenly exploded. She smashed the inhibitor and used her heat to coerce Lu Shen.
The unexpected surprise was the baby. Lu Shen married her, and she became spoiled by that indulgence.
She still refused to admit she loved Lu Shen. She tried to convince herself she only liked Lu Shen’s body and pheromones. That way, she would never lose everything.
But her desire for Lu Shen grew more severe by the day. So severe she could no longer control herself.
Yet, Lu Shen still didn’t love her.
Lu Shen loved the baby so much, but she refused to love her, refused even to touch her proactively. The Lu Shen she once thought was within reach—the person she wanted most—she couldn’t have. Even after marriage and a child, she still didn’t have her.
The immensely proud Captain An finally couldn’t take it anymore.
She got out of bed. At least this time Lu Shen can’t just leave without a word like before, she comforted herself, but her heart wouldn’t stop racing.
Leaving the master bedroom, she found Lu Shen was indeed home. The lights were on in the kitchen, and there was the sound of running water. Before walking in, she noticed the living room was perfectly tidy; the toys the baby usually scattered everywhere were put away neatly in the cabinets.
She realized she and Lu Shen were the only ones in the house. Lu Shen hadn’t brought the baby home last night.
This made her panic even more. She hurried toward the kitchen, running right into Lu Shen coming out with bowls.
“You’re awake? Wash your hands and get ready to eat,” Lu Shen’s voice was as gentle as always.
An Zhaoyu had slept too long; the An family had already finished their meal. If she went there, she’d be scolded. Ordering takeout wasn’t healthy, so Lu Shen decided to cook.
“Oh,” An Zhaoyu said, obediently washing her hands, not knowing what else to say.
If she remembered correctly, this was the first time they were dining alone in this house. Despite all the parties she had attended, An Zhaoyu had never invited Lu Shen to a meal, never accompanied Lu Shen to eat with her friends, and certainly never cooked a meal herself.
She didn’t know how to cook, so Lu Shen never let her into the kitchen.
But what about her? She loved Lu Shen—but what had she ever done for her? She didn’t even know what Lu Shen wanted. A wave of helplessness and guilt surged within her.
The now-sober Captain An finally realized what she had done. She regretted it. She should have regretted it from the very beginning. But she had still messed everything up.
While waiting for Lu Shen to wash the dishes, she sat on the sofa, mentally rehearsing what she was going to say.
She admitted defeat. She wouldn’t go out drinking anymore. She wouldn’t be stubborn. She would tell Lu Shen personally that she had fallen in love with her and couldn’t pull herself out. She was willing to be tamed by Lu Shen, even if Lu Shen didn’t love her back.
However, Lu Shen didn’t give her the chance. She brought the two signed divorce agreements from the study and placed them in front of her.
Lu Shen’s voice remained unchanged—gentle yet cold.
“Let’s get a divorce.”
An Zhaoyu’s uneasy premonition was confirmed. She couldn’t speak for a long time. But these were the agreements she had signed with her own hand. Lu Shen had finally found her unbearable.
“Don’t worry, I will still love Xiao Zhou as much as before,” Lu Shen said, seeing her hesitation. She had already considered both things An Zhaoyu might worry about.
“You don’t have to fear being harassed by Alphas anymore. Professor Fu’s inhibitor has made great progress. Soon, Omegas won’t have to live under the shadow of being controlled by pheromones.”
Lu Shen knew An Zhaoyu had chosen to marry her to avoid being permanently marked. Once the inhibitor hit the market, a permanent mark would be no different from a temporary one. As long as an Omega didn’t want it, no one could force them into heat.
Equal rights might still have a long way to go, but all she could do was provide the option to resist for Omegas who wanted to fight back. Not just for her late mother, or for brave, freedom-loving youths like An Zhaoyu, but also for her future Omega baby.
Since she had arranged everything so perfectly, how could An Zhaoyu refuse?
“Okay.”
Even though An Zhaoyu didn’t want to, she had to accept the reality that Lu Shen didn’t love her. She had no right to refuse.
Lu Shen left the house with her meager belongings.
The empty house was left to An Zhaoyu alone. She knew Lu Shen would return to that small house with the tropical plants. This house was bought by the An family, and Lu Shen didn’t plan to take a cent from them; she left all the common property to the baby.
An Zhaoyu went into the bathroom and saw her red eyes in the mirror. She was like a childish little kid who threw a tantrum because she couldn’t get the love she wanted.
But she wasn’t a child, and she had driven away the person she loved.
“Are you satisfied now?” she asked the self in the mirror.
