- Chapter 47 - Family and Lovers
“Is the car broken?” Ning Qi looked left and right, confused.
“No,” Qin Shi laughed. “I just remembered someone saying I have excellent taste.”
“Excellent taste…” Ning Qi repeated the words, then it hit her. She had forgotten that Qin Shi overheard her boasting to Yun Shu! She had spent several minutes shamelessly praising herself, and Qin Shi had heard every word.
Was I really that narcissistic? Ning Qi buried her face in her hands, flushing with embarrassment. “I… I was just saying whatever came to mind! And you heard what Yun Shu was saying, right? She was trying to drive a wedge between us.”
“Mm-hmm,” Qin Shi reached out and pinched Ning Qi’s cheek affectionately. “Our Ningning is so well-behaved.”
The action reminded Ning Qi of how she used to pinch Xiao Yu’er’s cheeks. What goes around comes around, she thought. But there was something more pressing. “Qin Shi, can you… not call me that?”
“Why not?”
“It’s just… a bit awkward,” Ning Qi scratched her head. “That’s what my family used to call me.”
“Then it’s perfect,” Qin Shi said smoothly. “I’ll be your family from now on.” She paused, then added with absolute confidence, “And your lover.”
“Miss Qin,” Ning Qi turned to look at her, her face heating up. “Being my lover comes with many conditions.”
“Is that so?” Qin Shi looked intrigued. “Tell me all of them. I’m certain I meet every single one.”
“Miss Qin, let’s just go home,” Ning Qi looked out the window, unwilling to discuss this further. “If we stay here any longer, your lover is going to starve to death.”
Qin Shi chuckled. “Alright.” She gripped the steering wheel and pulled back onto the road.
Shared Keys and Shared Enemies
“Is it heavy?” Ning Qi asked as they walked. Qin Shi was carrying most of the bags, especially the heavy ones.
“Isn’t it a bit late to ask?” Qin Shi teased. “I’ve been carrying them this whole time.”
“Fair point,” Ning Qi laughed awkwardly. They were already in the elevator. She realized she was a bit slow on the uptake.
As they reached the door, Qin Shi took Ning Qi’s hand. “I’ll find the keys,” Ning Qi said, digging through her bag. It was buried deep in an inner pocket. “It’s stuck… hey, don’t you have a key?”
Ning Qi had given Qin Shi a spare key a few days ago to save her the trouble of waiting at the door. Qin Shi reached into her own bag, pulled out her key, and Ning Qi happily took it to unlock the door.
During dinner, Ning Qi remembered the “business” gossip. “Qin Shi, I heard from Yun Shu that your family and the Lu Corporation are competing for a partnership. Is that true?”
“Yes,” Qin Shi didn’t hide it. “That’s why he asked to meet with me last time.”
“And you went?”
“I did,” Qin Shi said honestly. She watched Ning Qi’s expression. “If you don’t like it, I won’t meet with him again.”
“No, that’s not necessary,” Ning Qi waved her hands. “Business is business. Meetings are unavoidable.”
“Aren’t you worried that what Yun Shu said is true?”
“Why would I be? You’ve already confessed the truth to me,” Ning Qi said calmly, taking a bite of food. “Since you’re being so honest and transparent, I have nothing to worry about.”
“So,” Qin Shi smiled, “if I hadn’t told you, you would have been worried?”
Ning Qi paused her chopsticks, actually considering it. She swallowed a mouthful of rice. “Maybe.”
She looked up firmly. “But listen—about what I said to Yun Shu today. I don’t like her, but I don’t hate her enough to let it ruin my mood. And while Lu Mingze is annoying, you were classmates, right?” She didn’t want her personal history with Lu Mingze to dictate Qin Shi’s professional life.
“Don’t you know the saying ‘husband and wife are one’?” Qin Shi asked, looking a bit sullen that Ning Qi was being so “reasonable.”
“…”
Ning Qi felt she had made a social blunder again. Actually, that logic made sense. “So, because I hate Lu Mingze, you hate him too?”
“Yes,” Qin Shi replied, looking down.
“Just because of me?”
“Is that not allowed?” Qin Shi countered.
“No, it’s allowed! It’s encouraged!” Ning Qi was delighted. If Qin Shi hated Lu Mingze, she never had to worry about them getting together like in the original book. “But Qin Shi… did Lu Mingze do something else to you?”
“Does mistreating my girlfriend count?” Qin Shi looked up at her.
“Yes, it counts.” Ning Qi didn’t bother explaining that she wasn’t her girlfriend back then. It felt good to have someone on her side. The plot was so broken now that the “White Moonlight” marrying the “Male Lead” seemed like a distant, impossible myth.
“So, that business competition… did you do that on purpose?” Ning Qi ventured.
“It was just a coincidence,” Qin Shi said.
“A likely story!” Ning Qi laughed. She felt it was important to be clear. “I really have no relationship with him. Not in the past, and definitely not in the future.”
“I know,” Qin Shi said. She had investigated their history long ago. “But I’m happy.”
“Happy because I told you?”
“No,” Qin Shi shook her head. “I’m happy because you finally realized I’m your girlfriend and felt the need to explain it to me in that capacity.”
“I’ve known that for a while!” Ning Qi insisted. “I keep it in mind every second!”
“Good progress,” Qin Shi smiled, feeding Ning Qi a spoonful of soup. “Don’t just eat the dry food.”
“I know, I know!” Ning Qi replied happily, then picked up a piece of food to feed Qin Shi in return. “Courtesy calls for reciprocity!”
The Aftermath of the Rumor
Outside, Yun Shu was still frozen in shock. Her friend Ling Yan walked up and tapped her shoulder. “Yun Shu, what are you thinking about? I’ve been calling your name.”
“Ling Yan…” Yun Shu struggled to process what she’d seen. “Tell me… if a girl looks at another girl with that kind of look, what does it mean?”
“It’s simple,” Ling Yan said. Same-sex marriage was legal, and it wasn’t a rare sight on campus. “It means she likes her. Why are you asking?”
“But… if a woman was married to a man, then divorced, could she fall for a girl and be with her just a few months later?”
“Well,” Ling Yan thought it over. “If she did, the marriage was probably just for show or they had no feelings. If not… they’re just best friends. But ‘best friends’ don’t look at each other the way you described.”
“Right,” Yun Shu murmured. “So… she really is with another woman.”
