After the Divorce, I Ended Up with My Ex-Husband’s "White Moonlight" [Transmigration] - Chapter 28
At this moment, Qin Shi couldn’t quite understand Ning Qi’s obsession with her appearance. Meanwhile, because Ning Qi was so focused on her makeup, she didn’t even notice that Qin Shi had reached out to affectionately pat her head.
Ning Qi rarely attended banquets. She only remembered a birthday gala her parents and brother had thrown for her when she turned eighteen. But back then, her health hadn’t been optimistic, so she had only made a brief appearance.
However, that didn’t stop her from being familiar with the proper etiquette for such events. Still, one question nagged at her: “Qin Shi, for a banquet like this, don’t you need to bring a male companion?”
“It’s not necessary.” Qin Shi offered a faint smile. “Don’t be nervous. Just act the way you usually do.”
“I’m not nervous,” Ning Qi thought. What was there to be nervous about?
“Well, we’re here!” As soon as Qin Shi finished speaking, the driver brought the car to a halt.
“Ah?” So fast? She hadn’t even had the chance to double-check her hair! As Ning Qi frantically smoothed her tresses, Qin Shi had already stepped out and walked around to open her door. “Ning Qi.”
“Oh!” Ning Qi climbed out of the car sluggishly. Her first words were to ask Qin Shi, “How is it? Do I look okay?”
“Good!” Qin Shi said with a smile. “You look very beautiful. Can we go in now?”
“I think so.” Taking a deep breath, Ning Qi steadied herself. She looked at Qin Shi, thinking she would wait for her friend to lead the way so she could follow behind.
Unexpectedly, Qin Shi raised her arm. Ning Qi looked at her blankly. Qin Shi said helplessly, “Miss Ning, weren’t you just asking me about finding a male companion?”
What did that mean? Was there a connection between the two?
“Did you not know that you can also bring a female companion?” Qin Shi asked.
“Huh?” That’s allowed? Well, yes! Why wouldn’t it be? In this society, same-sex marriage wasn’t unheard of, so bringing a female companion was perfectly normal.
In that brief moment, quite a few people at the entrance had already turned to look at them. Ning Qi noticed their gazes, but she didn’t overthink it. She tucked her arm through Qin Shi’s and walked inside with steady, confident steps.
The summer sun set late; at six-thirty, the sky was just beginning to dim. After a quick greeting in the main hall, Qin Shi took Ning Qi to the bedroom to visit the baby.
Miss Huo was currently soothing him. He was likely hungry; after she mixed some formula and fed him, his crying finally ceased. Only while the baby was drinking did Huo Han have a moment to speak with Qin Shi. However, when she looked up, she was stunned to see Ning Qi.
Her gaze was so direct that Ning Qi asked in confusion, “Miss Huo, is something wrong?”
“No.” Huo Han motioned for the nanny to arrange seats for them. She smiled at Ning Qi. “It’s just been a long time since I’ve seen Xiao Shi bring someone to a banquet. It took me a second to process it.”
“So you used to go alone?” Ning Qi turned to ask Qin Shi. She had just been wondering if Qin Shi meant she used to bring female companions instead of men; she hadn’t yet asked about Qin Shi’s other friends.
“I rarely attend these events,” Qin Shi explained.
“That’s true,” Huo Han added with a laugh. “Xiao Shi usually declines these things if she can. Our little one…” She teased the baby in her arms, “It’s truly rare for him to see his Auntie Qin!”
The baby was contentedly drinking his formula. He was still too small to hold the bottle himself, but his mouth was clamped tight around the nipple. Everything else in the world seemed irrelevant to him; he was solely focused on his milk.
“Is he really this small?” Ning Qi’s attention was now entirely on the little guy. He looked so soft and adorable.
“Yes.” Huo Han patted the baby and said softly, “Guo Guo will grow up big and strong!”
The baby finished his milk, no longer hungry or thirsty. His round eyes struggled to stay wide open, as if he were also sizing up Ning Qi, who was staring at him.
“Would Miss Ning like to hold him?” Huo Han asked, seeing how much she seemed to like children.
“No, no.” Ning Qi waved her hands frantically. “I don’t know how to hold a baby. I… I’ll just watch.” She had zero experience; it would be terrible if she made him cry.
Huo Han didn’t press the matter. She bent over and placed the child in the cradle. Ning Qi squatted down, tilting her head to watch him. He was too small to speak, only making a few “ya-ya” sounds, but the more Ning Qi looked at him, the cuter he became.
She really wanted to squish his little cheeks! Hold it back, Ning Qi told herself. Even though she hadn’t raised children, she had heard that you shouldn’t just touch newborn babies randomly.
Nearby, Qin Shi and Huo Han had started chatting on the sofa. Huo Han and Qin Shi had grown up together; though Qin Shi was an only child, Huo Han was like an older sister to her.
“How did you end up coming with Miss Ning?” Huo Han asked. She had been shocked at first sight—partly because she knew Ning Qi’s identity, but mostly because Qin Shi had actually brought her along today!
“She’s divorced.” Qin Shi’s gaze remained fixed on Ning Qi.
“Divorced?” Huo Han was even more shocked now. She looked toward Ning Qi. “You mean she and Lu Mingze divorced? When did this happen?”
“Mm,” Qin Shi said flatly. “Not long ago.”
“How did I not hear about this…” Just as Huo Han was wondering how such a major event had stayed under the radar, Qin Shi stood up and walked over.
“Ning Qi, he’s getting sleepy.”
“Is he?” Ning Qi looked at the baby and then at herself in confusion. She was holding a small toy, and the baby would occasionally let out a giggle while watching it.
“He seems quite happy!” Ning Qi looked at the baby again and turned to Qin Shi. “He doesn’t look sleepy at all?”
Qin Shi took the toy from her hand and handed it to the maternity matron nearby. “He’s been playing for a long time. He must be tired.”
“Really?” Ning Qi squatted back down to look at the baby. His eyes were still wide open; he didn’t look tired in the least!
Huo Han, of course, overheard their conversation. She shot an intrigued look at Qin Shi and explained with a smile, “Guo Guo just turned a month old, so he does sleep quite a bit. Miss Ning, why don’t we go sit in the living room? It is indeed time for his rest.”
“Alright then.” Since the baby’s mother said it was time for sleep, Ning Qi couldn’t intrude further. Seeing Huo Han gently rocking the cradle, she stood up and said her goodbyes, unable to resist one last look before leaving.
The child actually reached out with both hands, trying to grab at something. Then, Ning Qi saw him giggle again.
“Let’s go,” Qin Shi said.
“Bye-bye, Guo Guo.” Ning Qi decided to believe the child had smiled at her, and she returned a sweet smile of her own before reluctantly leaving the room.
“Do you like children that much?” Qin Shi asked the moment they stepped out.
“They’re alright,” Ning Qi said, thinking of the baby. “He’s so cute, but so tiny! It feels almost surreal.” She hadn’t even dared to touch him.
“But Qin Shi, you know so much!” Ning Qi scratched her head; she was completely clueless about such things. “How could you tell he was sleepy? I had no idea, I didn’t even know when he was supposed to rest.”
