- After the Divorce, I Ended Up with My Ex-Husband’s "White Moonlight" [Transmigration]
- Chapter 11 - Testing the Waters
Qin Shi remembered that she had dropped Ning Qi off at the Nanyuan complex. Ning Qi didn’t have a job, and since Lu Mingze treated her so poorly, would he really hire a housekeeper to look after her? How did she eat every day? Did she eat out for every meal? No wonder she had said she’d already eaten that day.
“I don’t know how,” Ning Qi’s reply arrived a second later, confirming her suspicions. “If I eat at home, my only options are rice porridge or plain white rice.”
So, she couldn’t cook side dishes. Qin Shi shook her head. “Cooking isn’t that difficult.”
“Don’t tell me,” Ning Qi typed out cautiously, “that you know how to cook, Qin Shi?”
“A little.”
“Impressive!” Ning Qi quickly attached an emoji.
Once the topic of cooking was raised, Ning Qi had a mountain of grievances to vent. At the moment, Qin Shi was the only one she could talk to, so she sent a flurry of messages in short order.
Qin Shi read through them one by one. Ning Qi had a long list of reasons for her culinary failures: she couldn’t control the heat, she always misjudged the amount of oil or salt, and she was terrified of the oil splattering on her…
It was clear Ning Qi was trying hard, but her results were consistently disappointing.
I think you should consider doing something else, Qin Shi typed, then paused and deleted it. Based on Ning Qi’s tone, her vegetable dishes were at least edible; there was still hope. “Then keep practicing,” Qin Shi sent instead.
“I feel like you’re mocking me,” Ning Qi sent an emoji back, “and I have sufficient evidence to prove it!”
“Just joking.” Before Qin Shi could reply, Ning Qi added, “I believe that with enough hard work, I can do it.”
She certainly didn’t lack confidence. Qin Shi could almost picture her expression as she said it.
“It’s late. You’re probably still busy, right? I won’t disturb your work anymore! I’m going to practice the piano.”
“I’m out!” Ning Qi sent one last meme and waited for Qin Shi’s “Alright” before putting her phone down, satisfied.
While Ning Qi was leisurely playing the piano, things were far less pleasant for Lu Mingze.
Despite Yang Rui using very tactful language to relay Ning Qi’s stance, Lu Mingze couldn’t stop his temper from flaring.
He knew it! This woman had been after his company and his money from the very beginning. His mother had been so kind-hearted, always telling him that Ning Qi genuinely loved him. Well, that “love” was certainly cheap. Lu Mingze suddenly thought of a certain girl—frail in appearance but incredibly strong in spirit. He wondered what she was doing now.
Fortunately, he had been one step ahead and had her sign that property distribution agreement early on.
“Tell her,” Lu Mingze said to Yang Rui, “that if she knows what’s good for her, she’ll sign the papers and leave. Don’t think I don’t know about the things my mother gave her in the past. I won’t pursue those, but she shouldn’t push her luck.”
“President Lu,” Yang Rui knew better than to argue while Lu Mingze was fuming, but if he didn’t relay the full message, the consequences would be on his head. “Miss Ning Qi said that if she isn’t satisfied with the terms, she will go to the media.”
Yang Rui didn’t need to finish the sentence. A CEO understood the power of public opinion better than he did. Although the Lu Group was a titan in C City, and this might not hurt them immediately, it would be a goldmine for their competitors to use against the corporate image.
In a normal world, the CEO Yang Rui dealt with would think like a rational person. But here…
“Tell her to figure it out quickly,” Lu Mingze said, tugging at his tie. “Otherwise, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
How much more “ruthless” can you be? We live in a society governed by law, don’t we? Yang Rui grumbled inwardly. Outwardly, he maintained his professional poise. “President Lu, since you insist, I will convey your words to Miss Ning.”
He was just a lawyer; he had no loyalty to the Lu Group. As long as he successfully finalized the divorce, his job was done. Yang Rui decided to test Ning Qi’s resolve again.
When Yang Rui relayed Lu Mingze’s latest “ultimatum,” there was a long silence before he heard Ning Qi let out a sigh. “Sigh.”
Ning Qi took a slow, steady sip of her coffee. “Lawyer Yang, do you know? Before my mother-in-law passed away, I was the one who took care of her. In the old days, that would have counted for a lot. And yet, look at him. He wants a divorce and won’t even part with a cent. Tell me, is he short on cash?”
Yang Rui desperately wanted to say, “No, he’s not,” but his professional ethics held him back. He had to remember whose side he was on.
“Lawyer Yang,” Ning Qi asked with a smile, “if I may ask, how much is Lu Mingze paying you in legal fees?”
Before he could answer, she chuckled. “I’m just thinking—Lu Mingze won’t even give a penny to his own wife, yet he can afford a lawyer with such high appearance fees!”
Yang Rui had to admit, the moment he walked out that day, he began to wonder if the stingy President Lu would actually pay his full fee. He had seen many divorces, but a wife being forced out with absolutely nothing was truly rare.
“Lawyer Yang,” Ning Qi said, picking up her bag. “Tell Lu Mingze I’m in no rush. When he truly comes to his senses and is ready to discuss a proper divorce, we’ll talk. I have things to do, so I’ll be going.”
She walked a few paces, then turned back. “Oh, Lawyer Yang, please do me a favor and tell him one more thing. Even if he doesn’t give me money now, I can still charge everything directly to his account. I just wonder what people will say about the President of the Lu Group refusing his wife a single cent?”
“Actually, I don’t care what they say. I don’t have to worry about a thing; I’ll just spend, spend, spend. Tell me, if you were in my position, would you be in a hurry to divorce?”
On a moral level, Yang Rui wanted to say that marriage was about emotion and that her words were meaningless. But she had made it clear from the start: if she couldn’t have the man, she would have the money.
By the time he could think of a rebuttal, Ning Qi was long gone. She hadn’t wanted to talk to Yang Rui at all today; she only showed up because he had called so many times.
“Three times is the limit”—a normal person would know when to quit, but expecting a “Dominant CEO” like Lu Mingze to realize he was being excessive was a fairy tale. Ning Qi didn’t expect him to realize anything; she just wanted the money.
She wasn’t worried. In the book, once the “White Moonlight” returned, Lu Mingze couldn’t wait to divorce the original Ning Qi. If he didn’t revise the agreement now, he wasn’t getting that divorce anytime soon.
The real show was about to begin. Ning Qi was genuinely looking forward to it. If the female lead was heartbroken just knowing the male lead had a “White Moonlight,” how would she feel knowing he still had a wife?
While anyone who followed the news would know, the female lead was currently a pure, innocent university student. How could she possibly pay attention to such things? She didn’t even know her “Senior Lu” was the President of the Lu Group, let alone that he was a married man.
“Ning Qi?”
Qin Shi had just been passing through this street when she saw Ning Qi talking to someone. She hadn’t expected that after finishing her errands and coming back around, Ning Qi would still be there. “Are you having some trouble?”
“If I am, is Qin Shi planning to help me?” Ning Qi asked with a laugh. They chatted on WeChat every day, but it had been several days since they’d met in person.
“If there is…”
“There isn’t!” Ning Qi said quickly. “Honestly, can’t you tell when someone is joking?”
“I know the man you were talking to.” Qin Shi wasn’t in a joking mood.
“The man?” Ning Qi realized who she meant. “Oh, Lawyer Yang Rui! He’s quite famous. I heard he’s won many cases in C City.”
“But I wasn’t ‘looking’ for him. We just happened to bump into each other and chatted for a bit.”
Qin Shi had a rough idea of how long they had been “chatting.” Didn’t she say we were friends? Then why won’t she tell me about this?
“It’s really nothing,” Ning Qi said, seeing the serious look on her face. She smiled. “If something really happens, I’ll definitely tell you. In fact, you’ll be the very first person I tell!”
Once she successfully secured the assets and got the divorce, she was absolutely going to give Qin Shi a lecture. She would explain exactly how terrifying it was to marry a stone-faced, arrogant, unrefined, and potentially abusive man! That kind of person must never be loved. Her own experience would be the perfect cautionary tale.
Hearing Ning Qi’s promise, Qin Shi felt a weight lift. Ning Qi’s final comment felt just like their usual banter on WeChat.
“It’s lunch time again,” Ning Qi said, checking her watch. she gave a sincere invitation. “Qin Shi, want to grab a bite? My treat—consider it thanks for helping me last time.”
“I told you, you don’t need to keep that on your mind.”
“That won’t do,” Ning Qi laughed. “Even biological brothers keep clear accounts! Besides, I said last time I’d pay you back when I had the chance.”
“Alright then,” Qin Shi agreed readily.
“Qin Shi, do you eat spicy food?”
“I can handle it.”
“Then how about Sichuan cuisine?”
“Sure.”
There was a newly opened restaurant nearby. Ning Qi followed the navigation and walked over with Qin Shi.
“Qin Shi, take a look. Just check whatever you want to eat. Hehe, no need to save me money—for now.”
“For now?”
Ning Qi put on a pitiable act. “You know my situation. That guy Lu Mingze is cheating. If he divorces me, I’ll be broke.”
“Are you worried about life after the divorce?”
“Not really.” I can’t wait for it, she thought.
“Actually, many wealthy couples are like that,” Qin Shi said suddenly. “The husband cheats, and the wife simply has to endure it.”
“So, are you saying I should just endure it too?” Ning Qi asked tentatively. In the book, even after the White Moonlight found out the male lead loved the female lead, she still insisted on the engagement. Was this how Qin Shi currently felt?
