- Chapter 15 - You Are Not Yet Cleared
He Ran looked at him suspiciously, sensing that he was hiding something. Just as he was about to press further, he heard approaching footsteps and was forced to remain silent. Looking toward the sound, he saw that it was Xue Yuanzhou.
It had been quite some time since they last saw each other. Xue Yuanzhou was dressed formally for once; his hair was slightly longer than it had been during their last meeting and had been dyed black, though he still wore that signature red diamond stud in his ear. Upon seeing He Ran, Xue Yuanzhou broke into a wide grin. Originally a cool guy, he suddenly looked somewhat foolish.
“Brother Ran!”
He Ran raised an eyebrow. “Why did you dye your hair?”
Xue Yuanzhou walked closer, running a hand through his hair. He laughed and said, “It grows too fast and I did not feel like dyeing it anymore, so I simply went back to black. How is it? Does it look good?”
He Ran nodded and said, “It is good. You finally look like an adult!”
Xue Yuanzhou pouted. “Was my previous style really that immature?”
Yin Zheng leaned against the railing with one leg slightly bent and his arms resting casually at his sides, a deep smile playing on his lips. Sensing the scrutinizing gaze, Xue Yuanzhou looked back. In an instant, the smile vanished from his eyes, and he stared back expressionlessly. The two seemed to be in a silent contest, neither willing to look away first, as if moving would signify defeat.
He Ran looked back and forth between them, the candy in his mouth crunching loudly. After a moment, he said hesitantly, “What are you two doing?”
Yin Zheng suddenly chuckled and turned to him. “Nothing. I just find this young man quite interesting. Care to introduce us?”
He Ran narrowed his eyes, feeling that something was off about his tone. Before he could speak, Xue Yuanzhou stepped forward and extended his hand.
“My name is Xue Yuanzhou. I am He Ran’s friend.”
Yin Zheng raised an eyebrow, briefly shaking the hand. He said shortly, “Yin Zheng.”
Xue Yuanzhou frowned, finding the name familiar. A moment later, he looked at He Ran in surprise, his expression asking: Is it the Yin Zheng I am thinking of?
He Ran blinked at him: Yes, it is exactly that Yin Zheng.
Xue Yuanzhou sucked in a breath, but his heart eased slightly. So, it is a love rival!
Watching their silent exchange, Yin Zheng could no longer maintain his smile. He said coldly, “What are the two of you doing?”
He Ran replied flatly, “He was asking me if you were the person who cheated with my partner.”
Yin Zheng said, “I believe I have explained myself clearly enough.”
He Ran replied, “I will draw my own conclusions after I have spoken with Ji Yang. For now, you are not yet cleared.”
Yin Zheng said, “Fair enough.”
Xue Yuanzhou was confused. “What are you talking about? I do not understand.”
He Ran ignored him and looked at Yin Zheng, his eyes deep and complex. “I hope everything you said was the truth, otherwise,”
Yin Zheng asked curiously, “Otherwise what?”
“I will not tolerate someone making a fool of me over and over again,” He Ran said. He then pulled along the bewildered and disgruntled Xue Yuanzhou and walked away.
Once they were at a distance, the smile vanished from Yin Zheng’s face. He turned back to the railing, his long hair fluttering in the night breeze. His dark eyes were devoid of emotion, and his handsome face appeared cold to the point of ruthlessness.
“What on earth were you talking about back there?” Xue Yuanzhou was still fixated on the question as they walked.
The explanation was too complicated, and He Ran did not feel like explaining. He brushed it off. “It is nothing. By the way, where were you? I did not see you earlier.”
Seeing that he wanted to change the subject, Xue Yuanzhou did not press further. “I went to the restroom. I only found out you arrived when I came out, so I went to look for you.”
“Is Shenxing here?”
Xue Yuanzhou said, “No, he went to Jiangcheng for a few days.”
He Ran was anxious to find Ji Yang and had no heart to stay. He told Xue Yuanzhou, “I have something to take care of and need to leave. Take He Yan with you when you go.”
Xue Yuanzhou was puzzled. “Where are you going?”
“I have some private business to handle.”
“Alright,” Xue Yuanzhou looked around. “Where is He Yan? I do not see him.”
He Ran said, “He went to play with Jin Sheng. When you see him later, tell him I had to leave early.”
“Okay.”
He Ran did not see Jin Zhengxiong, so he sought out Jin Jiarong to say his goodbyes.
After exiting the estate and sitting in his car, He Ran took a deep breath and dialed Ji Yang’s number. The phone rang for a long time until it automatically disconnected. He Ran pursed his lips and dialed again.
This time, it was answered after two rings. Immediately, the thunderous sound of heavy metal music flooded his ears, accompanied by a voice that was clearly intoxicated.
“Who is it?”
He Ran pulled the phone away for a moment before bringing it back to his ear. After a pause, he said, “It is me, He Ran!”
There was silence on the other end, followed by a low chuckle. Ji Yang spoke incoherently, “Nonsense. Why would He Ran call me? He does not want me anymore.”
He was clearly drunk and had consumed quite a lot. Realizing they could not talk properly over the phone, He Ran asked, “Where are you now?”
“What did you say?” Ji Yang asked thickly.
He Ran raised his voice. “Where are you right now?”
Ji Yang said blankly, “I am at a bar!”
“Which bar?”
“I do not know.”
He Ran hung up the phone and started the car. He had a good idea where Ji Yang might be.
Chronic.
This bar was a place He Ran and his friends frequented often. He had brought Ji Yang here a few times, though Ji Yang usually disliked the noisy environment and was often unhappy when they came. Because of that, it was the only bar in Jinghai that Ji Yang was familiar with, making it the most likely place he would go.
The bar was members-only, and the security at the door recognized He Ran, inviting him straight in. At ten o’clock, the nightlife was just beginning. The bar was crowded, and people were dancing to the deafening music. He Ran had not been there in a while and felt out of place, finally understanding why Ji Yang disliked it.
Frowning, he scanned the room and soon spotted Ji Yang slumped over the bar counter. He Ran strode over and stood beside him, pausing for a moment before nudging him gently.
“Ji Yang!”
There was no reaction; the body merely swayed like it had no bones. He Ran frowned and spoke louder. “Ji Yang!”
The man finally stirred, slowly lifting his head to look at him blankly. “Who are you?”
He Ran said, “Look closely and see who I am.”
Ji Yang craned his neck toward him, squinting for a long time before murmuring, “He Ran?” He repeated it uncertainly, “He Ran! Why are you here?”
Ji Yang used the bar counter to push himself up, but he stumbled, instinctively grabbing He Ran’s arm. He Ran frowned and supported him. “I just called you. Why did you drink so much? Did you come alone?”
Ji Yang managed to stand steadily only by leaning on He Ran’s arm. He shook his head with a mix of confusion and joy. “I do not remember. Are you here for me? Have you forgiven me?”
He Ran sighed silently. “I will take you back first.”
“I am not going back!” Ji Yang suddenly hugged him, sobbing like a child. “I do not want to go back! He Ran, these past few days have been terrible. I miss you so much. Do not leave me.”
He Ran said, “Let go!”
“No! If I let go, you will leave. I do not want you to go.”
His strength was immense, and He Ran could not break free for a moment. He Ran knit his brows and said, “Ji Yang, I know you are not that drunk. Let go of me.”
