Chapter 6: The Wolf and the Whip-Wielder
◎ I’ll call you Al, okay? ◎
After reaching out several times only to be met with the puppy’s fierce snapping, Jiao Qingyin felt a bit dejected.
She’s probably just scared and won’t let me touch her yet. It’ll get better once we’re familiar, Jiao Qingyin comforted herself. She proactively scooted backward, retreating outside the creature’s “alert zone.”
Her move did indeed cause the puppy to relax slightly, but its body remained tense, and it refused to touch the milk in front of it.
Jiao Qingyin thought for a moment, stood up, and walked into the walk-in closet attached to the bedroom. She even considerately closed the door, leaving the entire outer space to the puppy.
Nameless watched Jiao Qingyin’s every move, only slowly withdrawing her gaze once the woman’s figure had completely vanished from sight.
After mysteriously turning into an animal, the wounds on her body had vanished, and the pain that once followed her like a shadow had disappeared with them. However, her lack of physical stamina had not been replenished—to put it simply, she was starving.
And it was an extreme hunger. Nameless could feel that if she didn’t eat soon, she would likely faint again.
She hesitated for a moment over the fragrant, warm milk, glanced toward the closet, and finally made a decision. If Otillia Hughes wanted to do something to her, she had plenty of ways; there was no need for such a convoluted scheme. Rather than a standoff that would only waste energy, she was better off seizing the time to build up her strength.
However, an accident occurred in the very next second. Because she was unfamiliar with walking on four legs, Nameless had just moved her front paw when she fell—splat.
A short-legged newborn puppy has a very round, chubby body. Nameless rolled forward once before coming to a stop.
Hiding in the closet and peeking out, Jiao Qingyin couldn’t hold it back: “Pfft.”
Nameless was momentarily stunned by the fall. She lay flat on the ground for quite a while before realizing what had happened. When she snapped out of it, her furry ears twitched twice, and the tips of her ears grew a bit hot.
Nameless pretended as if nothing had happened and stood up, lifting a front paw—this time, she thought carefully for a long moment before moving the corresponding back paw. She looked exactly like a puppy seriously learning how to walk.
After a few steps to the milk saucer, she buried her face right in.
Feeding with an animal body for the first time was a clumsy process, but she quickly learned how to lap the milk into her mouth with her tongue. The milk was warm and had a slight gamey scent, helping her recover from her famished state.
Nameless felt zero shame about eating her enemy’s food. She inhaled the milk like a whirlwind, moving so fast it looked as if she might gnaw on the plate itself. Under these unknown circumstances, replenishing her strength was a necessity; otherwise, if she encountered danger, she wouldn’t even have the energy to run.
This body was too small. Nameless was full by the time she neared the end, but her inner insecurity made her force herself to lick up the very last drop. She couldn’t be sure when her next meal would come, so she had to eat as much as possible whenever food was available.
Consequently, by the time she finished the entire saucer, her belly was so round she couldn’t even walk.
So uncomfortable… Nameless sprawled on the pillows, her gaze somewhat dazed. She had never imagined a day would come when she would be so fragile that she’d be too stuffed to stand after drinking milk.
She couldn’t recall what happened before she lost consciousness, so she wasn’t sure if she had transformed from a human into a canine, or if her body remained the same while her consciousness had traveled into this shell.
As she thought, Nameless’s brain began to slow down. Having never encountered magic, she didn’t realize that the Sleep Arrays on the surrounding pillows had begun to function.
Jiao Qingyin walked out of the closet and saw Nameless sprawled out after her meal, looking dazed as if she were contemplating the meaning of dog-life.
Nameless instinctively tried to stand up, but under the dual effects of being overstuffed and the Sleep Array, she was too drowsy to move. Seeing that the puppy didn’t bare its teeth the moment it saw her this time, Jiao Qingyin leaned closer and quickly noticed Nameless’s odd state.
“Ate too much?” Jiao Qingyin found it a bit funny.
Nameless glared at the woman, wanting to threaten her not to touch, but her eyelids stubbornly drooped. A second later, she snapped awake, looked up to glare again, and then started nodding off once more. She repeated this cycle of almost falling asleep and struggling to wake up, her head bobbing, which made Jiao Qingyin laugh.
She reached out and, finally achieving her wish, stroked the puppy’s head. “Go to sleep.”
After saying that, she gently rubbed the side of the puppy’s belly to help with digestion.
“!” Nameless’s entire body stiffened. She used all four paws to grab the hand placed on her stomach. She wanted to kick the hand that dared to touch her, but perhaps it was because she was too tired, or perhaps Jiao Qingyin’s movements were too gentle—Nameless ultimately couldn’t bring herself to kick her away.
Can’t let my guard down… want to sleep a little… this is a trap… feels so good… danger… but… Amidst the chaotic thoughts, Nameless fell into a deep sleep.
Rubbing the puppy’s round, full belly, Jiao Qingyin was inexplicably reminded of herself. When she was very young, a meteor shower had turned her home into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, making her—at one point—just like this puppy, panicked by a life of feast or famine. Back then, whenever she had food, regardless of quality, she would eat every bit until nothing was left.
Even though many years had passed, Jiao Qingyin still hadn’t broken this habit. It was like a scar left by her old life, constantly reminding her to complete her missions whenever possible.
Jiao Qingyin paused unconsciously. She thought of the generous rewards offered by the Time and Space Management Bureau. As long as she had enough mission points, she could…
A slight tickling sensation in her palm brought her back. She looked down and found the puppy was groggily pawing at her hand, wanting her to keep rubbing.
Jiao Qingyin’s eyes crinkled with a smile.
“So cute.”
She sighed softly, eventually picking the puppy up and holding it in her arms. She lay back against the pile of pillows, rubbing the puppy’s belly with one hand while watching the night sky outside the window.
Today happened to be a full moon. The heavy rain had stopped at some point, and pale moonlight pierced through the clouds, spilling over Jiao Qingyin and the puppy.
Jiao Qingyin was reminded of the protagonist she had picked up earlier today. The girl’s eyes were very similar to the moon before her—clean, bright, and seemingly forever untainted by filth.
The puppy in her arms shifted. Jiao Qingyin looked down, recalling that this dog’s blue eyes were also strikingly similar to the protagonist’s. She couldn’t help but hook her finger to scratch the puppy’s chin, asking as if talking to herself: “I’ll give you a name, okay?”
In a half-dreaming, half-awake state, Nameless heard Jiao Qingyin’s voice. Her sluggish brain couldn’t comprehend the words, but her body instinctively wagged its tail.
“Artemis*, the Goddess of the Moon, is a deity from my hometown. Your eyes are so like the moon, I’ll call you Al, okay?”
Nameless lay in the warm embrace, unconsciously nuzzling against the hand covering her. Had she been even slightly conscious, she would never have done such a thing. But she was truly too exhausted; the sense of crisis that had haunted her for years vanished for the first time. She only wanted to simply sleep.
As for anything else…
“Al, goodnight. See you tomorrow.”
