After the Bigshot Turned into a Gold-Digging Scumbag Alpha - Chapter 9
The interview at Shengguang Group was not difficult for Jiang Shuiyun. Judging by the expressions on the interviewers’ faces, she was about ninety percent confident she would pass.
As the interview was drawing to a close, Xi Rong, who had stepped out earlier, returned. Without drawing attention to himself, he gave a subtle nod to the other two. Team Leader Zhang stood up with a beaming smile:
“Congratulations, Ms. Jiang. You’ve successfully passed the interview and are officially joining our team!”
“Thank you all.”
Confidence was one thing; the final result was another. Jiang Shuiyun stood and expressed her gratitude.
“Here’s the situation, Ms. Jiang. After careful consideration and deliberation, our company believes that your level of skill would be wasted on a rookie team. If you have no objections, we’d like to place you in an active team instead.
They’re extremely strong, and they happen to be lacking a talent like you.”
Xi Rong handed over the pre-prepared contract documents. “You can take a look first.”
Jiang Shuiyun didn’t care where she went. For her, this was just a job; the location didn’t matter.
Flipping through the contract, she noticed Shengguang Group’s efficiency—everything was already thoroughly prepared. The contract even included additional perks like room and board, showing a clear sense of sincerity. For Jiang Shuiyun at this moment, it felt like a timely lifeline.
However, one detail puzzled her. She looked at Xi Rong. “Mr. Xi, it says here that I’m being assigned as the captain of the Shenji Team. Isn’t that a bit much? I’m just a rookie.”
“That’s the decision of our CEO,” Xi Rong replied. “Our CEO believes you’re fully capable of handling the role. Besides, there’s a trial period. If during that period you feel you’re not up to the task, we can discuss other options. You don’t need to worry about this.”
At first, Xi Rong had also thought Shen Yunyi’s approach was a little extreme, but there was nothing he could do—the CEO’s word was final. It was better than letting the Shenji Team, currently a scattered mess, disband entirely.
Jiang Shuiyun didn’t know all the behind-the-scenes intricacies. Hearing Xi Rong’s explanation, she no longer dwelled on it. After carefully reviewing the other terms, which were all reasonable, she signed the contract without hesitation.
“You’re straightforward, Ms. Jiang,” Xi Rong said with a big smile. “It’s still early, so why don’t we go check out the team? We can also help you move in at the same time.”
No matter what, securing a talent of this caliber early was a huge win.
Jiang Shuiyun had no objections. She and Yi Jinbai had nowhere else to go; moving into the dorms sooner would save them from having to stay in a hotel.
“No need to move anything,” Jiang Shuiyun said. “The fire last night destroyed most of my belongings. But my wife is still waiting in the reception area. Can she come with us?”
“This fire actually symbolizes a prosperous future for you and the Shenji Team,” Xi Rong said. “Don’t worry, Ms. Jiang. If you need anything, just let us know.”
Xi Rong was no fool—if he wasn’t capable of handling people well, he wouldn’t be in his position as a manager.
After thanking him again, Jiang Shuiyun watched as Team Leader Zhang went back to input her information. Xi Rong and Coach Zhang accompanied her to the team’s base.
After picking up Yi Jinbai from the reception area and reassuring her about their future arrangements, Jiang Shuiyun and the group got into the car headed for the team.
Esports training didn’t require a huge space, but it had to be secluded. The Shenji Team hadn’t chosen a pricey downtown office building. Instead, they rented a villa in a suburban area not far from the city center, providing both training facilities and accommodation for the team.
“Ms. Jiang, let me be honest with you,” Xi Rong said from the passenger seat, turning back to Jiang Shuiyun in the rear. “The Shenji Team used to be a world-renowned team. But since their captain, Shen Dao, retired, it’s been leaderless and chaotic. The team members are all top-tier players, so there’s a lot of friction. Ms. Jiang, you’ll need to be patient and handle that.”
“This is my job.”
Hearing this, Jiang Shuiyun finally relaxed. She wasn’t afraid of temperamental geniuses—what she dreaded were dull-witted fools.
Xi Rong gave a sheepish smile and didn’t press further. He sensed that Ms. Jiang might not yet fully grasp the seriousness of the situation.
The car drove smoothly into the residential complex, weaving through the villa community before stopping in front of a villa at the edge.
The villa spanned three floors above ground and two below, with a neat, well-kept front yard. It looked quite impressive.
Jiang Shuiyun helped Yi Jinbai out of the car. Xi Rong, walking ahead, slowed his pace, introducing the villa and casually telling Jiang Shuiyun the security code.
She memorized it silently. As Xi Rong opened the door, a burst of commotion erupted from inside, like someone had poked a hornet’s nest—chaotic, noisy chatter filled the space.
“Brother Xi, Director Zhang, what are you doing here?”
A boy holding a toy paintball gun suddenly leapt from a corner and greeted them.
“Cut the noise! There’s an announcement—everyone, gather here.”
Xi Rong rubbed his temples, staring at the group of chaotic, unruly teammates—once a powerhouse, now a bunch of mischievous monkeys. If he hadn’t insisted so strongly, President Shen would have already seen this team’s ranking plummet, leaving them scattered and disbanded as a third-rate squad.
After Xi Rong’s calls, the group reluctantly gathered. Including the substitute, five people sat idly in the living room, their gazes sweeping over the two newcomers, Jiang Shuiyun and Yi Jinbai.
As they observed the newcomers, Jiang Shuiyun took the opportunity to assess the team, matching faces to Xi Rong’s introductions.
“A soft, adorable girl nicknamed “Viper,” a sharpshooter specializing in long-range damage.”
“A shy, blushing boy nicknamed “Apostle of Slaughter,” a front-line tank with thick skin and heavy endurance.”
“The ever-stoic cool guy nicknamed “Blade,” an expert in close-quarters combat.”
“A flamboyantly made-up boy with elegantly posed fingers, nicknamed “Enchanting Zero,” a support healer who combined shielding, recovery, and crowd-control in team fights.”
“And the warm, sunny substitute who had first jumped out, nicknamed “Solar Flare,” currently the team’s only reserve player.”
After introducing everyone, Xi Rong turned to Jiang Shuiyun with a serious expression.
“I’d like to formally introduce Ms. Jiang. She will also be your new team captain. Jiang Shuiyun—you may have already heard of her in the game these past few days. She is,” Xi Rong hesitated at her unusual in-game ID, gesturing for her to continue.
“Wo Nen Die—that’s my game ID. I hope we can all improve together,” Jiang Shuiyun said, calm and confident.
The moment her words fell, the five who had been joking and laughing fell silent, all eyes turning toward the team captain’s chair, where Jiang Shuiyun now sat.
