Chapter 83: “How about it, am I handsome in this outfit? Good enough to give you…”
After a brief chat, Shen Qingyu ended the call with Cheng Che. Just as all the fireworks had burned out, he said goodbye to Song Yu and went home.
Song Yu, as usual, walked him to the bottom of the building and watched him go inside, not turning to leave until he saw the light turn on on Shen Qingyu’s floor.
After returning home, Shen Qingyu sent New Year’s greetings to his friends and a message to his aunt asking about the situation, but he didn’t receive a reply.
The sound of fireworks and firecrackers outside gradually faded, and sleepiness set in. Shen Qingyu pulled the covers over himself and slept.
Even during the New Year, for Shen Qingyu, it was no different from any other time. Living alone meant no special celebrations even during holidays.
On the third day of the Lunar New Year, Shen Qingyu received a voice message from Yang Yu. The last time they spoke was on New Year’s Eve, when Yang Yu shared a photo of his New Year’s Eve dinner.
Thinking it was just another routine share, Shen Qingyu’s expression instantly became serious after playing the voice message.
“Shit, I caught Liu Peng cheating in bed.”
Shen Qingyu abruptly stood up.
Liu Peng was the boyfriend Yang Yu was currently dating.
Shen Qingyu quickly called him. It rang for a long time without an answer, making him anxious. Given Yang Yu’s personality, he definitely wouldn’t be polite if he caught his boyfriend cheating, and Liu Peng was tall and muscular… if a fight broke out, Yang Yu would certainly be the one to suffer.
Anxiously pacing the living room, clutching his phone, he bit his lip and hesitated for a few seconds before finally deciding to message Lu Xiao.
【Shen Qingyu: Are you busy right now?】
Lu Xiao replied instantly.
【Lu Xiao: Oh, what brings you to me?】
【Lu Xiao: This is the first time you’ve proactively looked for me, right?】
【Lu Xiao: Tell me, what is it?】
【Shen Qingyu: I can’t explain clearly by typing. Can you take a call?】
Perhaps sensing the urgency in Shen Qingyu’s messages, Lu Xiao didn’t reply but immediately sent a… video call.
Shen Qingyu suspected the video call was intentional, but he was too concerned to argue and answered directly.
Lu Xiao on the other end was wearing casual home clothes. His hair had grown a bit longer recently and hadn’t been styled, making him look slightly more compliant: “What’s wrong?”
“I have a friend, Yang Yu, you’ve met him. He just messaged me saying his boyfriend cheated, and now he won’t answer my calls. I’m worried something happened, can you come with me to find him…” Shen Qingyu said anxiously.
“Sure, wait a moment, I’ll change clothes and drive over to you,” Lu Xiao said, placing his phone on the table. He disappeared from the screen and quickly reappeared with a set of clothes. He took off his shirt in front of the camera, put on a hoodie, and then took off his pants.
Fortunately, the angle didn’t show his lower body.
“Do you know where he is right now?” Lu Xiao asked.
Shen Qingyu pondered for a moment, saying: “He told me the name of his boyfriend’s apartment complex before, but I don’t know the exact building.”
“Let’s just go there first,” Lu Xiao quickly changed his clothes. He turned the camera toward a mirror and said with a hint of playfulness, “How about it, am I handsome in this outfit? Good enough to give you a boost, right?”
Shen Qingyu was a bit speechless: “I’m bringing you to back me up, not to give me a boost.”
“Isn’t it the same thing?”
“Whatever, whatever. If you think it’s the same, then it is.”
Lu Xiao chuckled lightly, “I’m hanging up. I’ll call you before I arrive, come downstairs, and remember to wear more layers.”
“…Okay,” Shen Qingyu paused, saying with slight embarrassment, “I’ll wait for you.”
Lu Xiao arrived quickly. The black G-Wagon parked downstairs attracted many onlookers, but he leaned carelessly against the car door, arms crossed. The moment he saw Shen Qingyu appear, he immediately stood up straight.
It had snowed yesterday, and the complex was still covered in white. His all-black outfit made him stand out.
He opened the passenger door for Shen Qingyu and then leaned over to fasten his seatbelt for him. The movement was so smooth and natural that Shen Qingyu had no chance to dodge and could only stare blankly at his nearby profile.
Noticing Shen Qingyu’s daze, Lu Xiao was a little smug. He had deliberately spritzed on some cologne before coming and didn’t style his hair to look less aggressive. “What, mesmerized by me?”
His tone held a hint of teasing.
Shen Qingyu pouted: “No, I’m thinking about Yang Yu’s situation.”
He shrugged and said: “Fine, if you say no, then no.”
Lu Xiao drove steadily, and Shen Qingyu didn’t feel dizzy at all in his car. Navigation prompts played on the phone, and Lu Xiao drove all the way to Liu Peng’s apartment complex following the directions.
Just as they reached the complex entrance, Yang Yu finally messaged him back. Shen Qingyu immediately called him without thinking.
“Yang Yu, where are you now?” Shen Qingyu’s tone was anxious.
Yang Yu’s voice was tearful and shouting: “That bastard is utterly disgusting! I really want to chop off his manhood and feed it to the dogs!”
Lu Xiao, who was secretly listening: “…”
“Are you okay? I’m at the entrance of Liu Peng’s complex. Are you still there?”
Yang Yu sniffled: “I’m moving my stuff. I still have some things at his place. Can you come up and help me? It’s Building 16, 7th floor.”
“Okay, wait for me.”
…
When Shen Qingyu and Lu Xiao arrived, Yang Yu was pointing at Liu Peng’s nose, angrily scolding him with fierce, impactful words that made the neighbors on the same floor poke their heads out to look.
“You’re shameless! A dead queer pretending to be straight to deceive a girl, is that fun for you?”
“Does she know you’re a troublemaker?”
“Do you really think you’re some hot commodity?”
Yang Yu grew more and more agitated, his face flushed with anger. Liu Peng’s face opposite him was grim, and behind him stood a woman in her late twenties, her expression complicated.
“Liu Peng, I’m telling you, this isn’t over!” Yang Yu spat at him fiercely, then turned to leave.
Seemingly afraid that Yang Yu would speak out, Liu Peng grabbed his wrist and lowered his voice: “We can talk about this privately…”
“Talk about what, ass-face! Get lost!” Yang Yu violently shook him off and gave him a loud, sharp slap in return.
The crisp sound of the slap echoed in the hallway, and Liu Peng’s expression instantly twisted, as if he had suffered a great humiliation.
Just as he clenched his fist, about to swing it, Lu Xiao dashed forward, gripping his wrist tightly: “I suggest you behave.”
“None of your business!” Liu Peng glared at him, trying to push Lu Xiao away, but found the other man unmoving. “Mind your own business!”
“I’ve decided to make it my business. What are you going to do?” Lu Xiao sneered, “Cheating on two people, pretending to be straight to deceive a girl. People like you should be put in a pig cage.”
Liu Peng cursed: “What’s your relationship with that little bitch Yang Yu?” Then he turned and pointed viciously at Yang Yu, “Yang Yu, you have the nerve to talk about me! You’ve hooked up with someone else and are biting me back, huh, you slut!”
Lu Xiao closed his eyes, having reached his limit, and landed a heavy punch on Liu Peng’s face. Liu Peng staggered back, spitting blood foam.
The two quickly wrestled with each other.
But Liu Peng was clearly no match for Lu Xiao. Lu Xiao’s moves were fast and vicious, constantly dominating. After only a few rounds, it was a one-sided beatdown.
Shen Qingyu watched, terrified, worried that Lu Xiao might get hurt. He paced back and forth like an ant in a hot pan, repeatedly calling Lu Xiao’s name.
Hearing Shen Qingyu’s shouts, Lu Xiao paused his movements, about to stop, but Liu Peng seized the chance to sucker punch him, hitting him on the corner of his mouth, which immediately bruised. Shen Qingyu’s heart sank.
“Call the police… I’m calling the police!” Liu Peng groaned painfully, clutching his face.
Lu Xiao hadn’t intended to kill him; except for the initial punch, the rest had landed in less visible spots. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and said coldly: “Go ahead and call.”
Shen Qingyu quickly stepped up, asking worriedly: “Does it hurt…”
Lu Xiao felt the punch was worth it, as he saw concern in Shen Qingyu’s eyes. “Doesn’t hurt. I’m fine.”
“He said he’s calling the police…”
Lu Xiao cast a cold glance at Liu Peng lying on the ground and reassured Shen Qingyu: “Don’t worry. I’ll call my dad’s assistant. He handles things like this often.”
Shen Qingyu had a complicated expression, wanting to say something but holding back, thinking: What kind of person were you before, for an assistant to frequently deal with things like this?
Lu Xiao told Shen Qingyu to take Yang Yu and leave, saying he would handle the rest. Shen Qingyu felt a warmth in his heart, along with a sense of security and peace. He had always thought Lu Xiao was unreliable and annoying, but without realizing it, Lu Xiao had become someone who could shield him from the storm.
On the way back to Yang Yu’s place, he finally burst into tears. He and Liu Peng had been together for over a year, and were compatible in many ways. Yang Yu never expected him to get involved with another woman during the few days he was home for the New Year.
Yang Yu had come out to his family after high school graduation. His family was very open-minded and didn’t interfere with his sexual orientation. So, after his relationship with Liu Peng stabilized, he often stayed at Liu Peng’s place. The joy of moving in was equal to the sadness of moving out now.
“I still have some things there, but I don’t want them because they’re disgusting.”
“Okay, let’s leave them.”
“How could he be so disgusting? He wasn’t like this before… or was I just blind and couldn’t see it?”
Shen Qingyu pulled out a tissue to wipe his tears. “Don’t dwell on the past. I’ll go drinking with you. Let’s move on from this relationship quickly. Don’t shed tears for a scum.”
Yang Yu sobbed for a long time, then tightly hugged Shen Qingyu, saying: “Xiao Yu… you’re the best…”
Shen Qingyu patted his back. “Glad you know it.”
By ten o’clock that evening, under Shen Qingyu’s comfort, Yang Yu’s emotions finally stabilized.
He had been with Yang Yu, drinking at the bar since eight. Although Shen Qingyu hadn’t drunk much, the environment was stuffy and hot, and the smell of smoke and alcohol made him feel dizzy. He wanted to persuade Yang Yu to go home. But Yang Yu hadn’t had enough and refused to leave, drinking and cursing Liu Peng, making Shen Qingyu almost want to join in.
He had planned to go out for rice noodles with Song Yu tonight, but that had to be postponed. Shen Qingyu proactively explained the reason to Song Yu. Upon learning they were at a bar, Song Yu offered to come over.
Shen Qingyu initially wanted to refuse, but Song Yu said he wouldn’t sit with them, only watch Shen Qingyu from a distance, and wouldn’t disturb them. His words were so sincere that Shen Qingyu felt it was impossible to say no, so he agreed.
Not long after sending the address, Song Yu appeared before him. His cold demeanor was out of place in the lively, hot bar. He sat alone by the bar counter, taking sips occasionally.
As he promised, he didn’t come over to interrupt, but his gaze remained locked on Shen Qingyu, as if his sole purpose for being there was to ensure Shen Qingyu was alright.
Yang Yu aggressively slammed the table, then got up and headed toward the dance floor. Before leaving, he told Shen Qingyu he could go home if he was in a hurry, but Shen Qingyu didn’t dare leave him alone here, so after thinking it over, he stayed. He looked at Yang Yu’s retreating figure and shook his head helplessly.
Suddenly, he felt a chilling, sticky gaze on him. Shen Qingyu looked around, but didn’t see anyone looking at him. Even Song Yu, who had been watching him, was now looking down at the drink menu.
An ominous premonition quietly emerged. Just as he stood up to go to the restroom, a middle-aged man stumbled and lunged towards him.
“S-sorry…” the man slurred, placing both hands on the table in front of Shen Qingyu.
A strong smell of alcohol assaulted him, making Shen Qingyu frown and cover his nose. The man’s head was lowered, his features hidden in shadow, which made Shen Qingyu feel inexplicably uneasy. He sat back down, deciding it was best not to leave alone right now.
“Where’s the restroom…” the man mumbled softly.
Shen Qingyu turned and pointed in a direction.
The man quickly thanked him, his steps much steadier as he walked away.
Shen Qingyu found it a little strange. He picked up the lemon water he had ordered and took a sip.
