Chapter 7: Bar – “Why does Cheng Che look more like a gay than I do…?”
Shen Qingyu’s mind was already wandering to what he should eat tomorrow. Fifteen minutes before lights-out, Cheng Che finally returned.
Sports earphones hung around his neck, sweat beaded on his long neck, and he carried a bowl of mixed fruit dessert (fruit lao).
Meeting Shen Qingyu’s gaze, Cheng Che pressed a slight smile onto his lips: “I bought you some fruit lao.”
Shen Qingyu: “Ah? For me?” He pointed to himself with his thumb.
Cheng Che nodded, untied the plastic bag, carefully tore open the disposable spoon wrapper, and put the plastic lid aside: “I added some yogurt and sago. I hope you like it.”
“I love it!” Shen Qingyu had just finished his wash-up, but who could refuse a bowl of fruit lao? The tip of the small spoon was shaped like a fork. He speared a piece of mango, opened his mouth wide, and put it in.
“The mango is so sweet,” he sighed contentedly.
Cheng Che reminded him gently: “Don’t let it touch your lips.”
Shen Qingyu obediently nodded, opening his mouth even wider, saying indistinctly: “Cheng Che, you’re so good to me.”
Lu Xiao, in the bunk opposite, found their conversation grating, but he lowered the volume of his game significantly.
He was now starting to suspect that his two roommates were hooking up, but he had no proof.
Due to some childhood trauma, Lu Xiao was homophobic. He possessed a sharp eye for identifying gay men, yet after sharing a room for half a year, he had never suspected Cheng Che was gay.
Frankly, Shen Qingyu was undeniably pretty. If he were a girl, Lu Xiao might actually consider him.
The thought of two men hooking up in the same dorm made him feel nauseous and want to vomit!
Lu Xiao irritably glanced at Shen Qingyu. Just one glance, and his eyes couldn’t move away.
Damn it! What is he doing? Isn’t one Cheng Che enough? Is he trying to hook me too?
Rage surged. Lu Xiao glared ferociously at the culprit who exuded temptation from the inside out.
Lu Xiao felt his control was too weak; he was completely unable to tear his eyes away from Shen Qingyu.
Shen Qingyu spooned up some yogurt. It was thick and sweet, with a pure flavor. Drinking it, he complimented: “Which shop is this fruit lao from? The yogurt is so authentic.”
Three intense gazes were aimed squarely at his face… no, to be precise, at his lips.
Shen Qingyu was confused, analyzing them in order.
Lu Xiao’s thick eyebrows were furrowed, his eyes full of menace, like a male beast on the verge of losing control.
Cheng Che’s gaze was wavering, hot flames flickering on and off in his eyes.
Song Yu, the farthest away, slowly removed his glasses. His eyes were dark and deep, with a hint of gloom flashing within.
Shen Qingyu’s voice was weak: “Why are you… all looking at me like that?”
Lu Xiao swung his head away with a belly full of anger, refusing to look at his alluring appearance anymore. If he didn’t have strong enough self-control, he might actually fall into Shen Qingyu’s trap.
“Wipe your mouth first.” Cheng Che finally recovered, gently reaching out to wipe away the circle of milky white residue around Shen Qingyu’s lips.
Only Song Yu remained fixed on him. Not until the yogurt was completely wiped away and the tissue flew into the trash can did Song Yu’s gaze slowly shift to the trash can.
…
After a period of rest and recovery, Shen Qingyu’s ankle healed well. He was especially grateful for his fully functional legs.
During the May Day holiday, Shen Qingyu returned home, but since he lived alone, he quickly got bored after a few days.
Yang Yu’s boyfriend was from out of town and managed to snag a high-speed train ticket home for the holiday, so Yang Yu encouraged Shen Qingyu to go to a bar with him.
Shen Qingyu’s few bar experiences had all been with Yang Yu, mostly at quiet bars near the university, drinking low-proof cocktails or milk beer.
For a while, Shen Qingyu loved milk beer and would cling to a glass every time they went to a quiet bar.
Yang Yu mocked: “Milk beer isn’t alcohol at all. It has no proof.”
“Then why do I feel a little dizzy drinking it?” Shen Qingyu blinked, unconvinced.
“How would I know? Who claims they get drunk on milk beer? People would laugh their teeth out if you told them that.”
Shen Qingyu protested with a laugh: “Then you laugh your teeth out and show me.”
Yang Yu: “Now I’m sure you really are drunk.”
In the end, they analyzed the situation for a long time and finally deduced the reason:
While Yang Yu was in the bathroom touching up his makeup, Shen Qingyu curiously sampled the drink in his glass. It was a specially made vodka cocktail, slightly higher proof, but not terribly so.
In Yang Yu’s words, during the New Year, Shen Qingyu could only sit at the kids’ table.
Dizzy, Shen Qingyu vehemently denied this, only for Yang Yu to counter: “Your eyelids are fighting to stay open from sleepiness. Why don’t you open your eyes before you talk?”
Shen Qingyu: “…” Woe is me.
Yang Yu solemnly promised not to mock his low alcohol tolerance this time. Only then did Shen Qingyu agree to go to a bar with him.
This bar was a bit far from the university and had suddenly become popular this year, requiring reservations in advance.
“I heard it’s because the looks of everyone there, from the waiters and the DJ to the performing bands, are super high. I saw a video of their waiters wearing suits and ties the other day, and I was instantly mesmerized.”
Shen Qingyu: “No wonder you waited until your boyfriend left to go…”
“That’s not it at all! I thought you were bored, so I took you out to have some fun.”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
“I heard they have a muscle man strip show every Thursday! If you pay enough, the handsome guy will even feed you drinks.” Yang Yu laughed wildly, his face filled with eagerness.
“Is this really a proper venue?” Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but ask a question from the depths of his soul. “Don’t let the vice squad catch us! I can’t afford to be embarrassed like that.”
“It’s a legitimate entertainment venue! What do you know? Minors are forbidden.”
As they spoke, they arrived at the bar. Yang Yu batted his eyes at the suited waiter at the entrance before showing his reservation code.
Shen Qingyu, meanwhile, surveyed the surroundings and noticed that the two motorcycles parked nearby looked familiar.
He thought: Could it really be such a coincidence?
…
They were seated.
Shen Qingyu felt the environment inside was much better than he had imagined. The areas were logically divided, with sections for dancing, a performance area, and dimly lit drinking zones.
Yang Yu had reserved seats in the performance area. Looking at the exquisite program card on the table, he rested his chin in his hand and said, “There’s a band performance tonight. I actually wanted to see the strip show, but I heard the band is even more popular than the strip show.”
Compared to the excited Yang Yu, Shen Qingyu was calmer. He ordered a lemonade. The taste was mediocre, not even as good as the one from the local discount tea chain, but it cost twenty dollars more.
Acutely aware of the surrounding gazes, Shen Qingyu didn’t let it distract him. He just wanted to confirm if the motorcycles parked outside belonged to Lu Xiao and Chen Qiming.
“There are quite a few handsome guys lurking around here, definitely coming for you. Thinking about a holiday fling tonight?” Yang Yu urged.
Shen Qingyu looked around distractedly. “No.”
Yang Yu was about to persuade him further, but the stage lights suddenly dimmed, and several tall, long-legged boys walked out from backstage.
Amidst the applause and cheers from the audience, neon lights flashed across the four boys.
Shen Qingyu quickly spotted a familiar figure seated behind the drum kit.
“Wait a minute, why does that person look so familiar?” Yang Yu asked in surprise.
“He is very familiar.” Shen Qingyu rubbed his eyes. A beam of blue-purple light flashed across his vision, illuminating the area: “It’s him.”
“BANG,” the powerful sound of the drum kit broke in.
It was hard to see clearly from afar. Lu Xiao seemed to be wearing over-ear headphones, possibly noise-canceling earmuffs. He wore a black T-shirt, his two strong arms gripping the drumsticks. Sweat sprinkled onto his arm muscles and rolled off as he casually raised and lowered the sticks.
He lazily lifted his eyelids. The audience consisted of unfamiliar faces, swaying their bodies to the rhythm of the drums.
There was only one exception…
The stage lights were too bright. Lu Xiao squinted to clearly see Shen Qingyu under the flashing neon lights.
So white that he reflected the light, making it impossible to look away.
“Tch.” Lu Xiao’s hand trembled, hitting an awkward, abrupt note.
Fortunately, it was masked by the other instruments, making the clumsy note less noticeable.
Lu Xiao thought: It’s all Shen Qingyu’s fault.
“If he doesn’t open his mouth to talk, he’s still very handsome,” Yang Yu stared intently. “Isn’t this more exciting than a strip show?”
“That’s not what you said a moment ago.” Shen Qingyu’s ear tips turned red the moment his eyes met Lu Xiao’s, but it was hard to tell in the darkness.
“I didn’t know then! How can vulgarity like mindlessly taking off clothes compare to this kind of subtle elegance?”
“…”
Shen Qingyu sipped his lemonade. The ice had melted quite a bit, diluting the lemon flavor. Whenever he felt awkward, he looked for something to do, so he pulled out his phone to check the comments section.
He had just updated a video yesterday and hadn’t had time to check the feedback.
Many familiar loyal fans were active in the comments, their flattering comments constantly appearing.
“Such a thin waist… I feel like it would leave marks if I pushed in, right?”
“Wife, wife, wife, wife, wife…”
“Finally, the wife has posted a new video. I’ve nearly worn out the old ones.”
“Does the wife like loyal and obedient little dogs? Woof woof woof.”
Such explicit comments made Shen Qingyu quickly switch accounts after only a quick scan.
…
It was getting late. Shen Qingyu figured it was time to go back, but Yang Yu was already having a blast, even being social enough to clink glasses with girls at the next table.
Seeing that the adorable little white rabbit, Shen Qingyu, was now alone, some people couldn’t resist their surging desires.
However, before they could approach and strike up a conversation, Chen Qiming and Lu Xiao appeared.
Chen Qiming sat down familiarly: “I can’t believe it’s really you! I thought I was mistaken from the stage.”
Lu Xiao reluctantly stood nearby. He waited and waited, but Shen Qingyu didn’t spare him a glance. Fuming, he pulled out a chair and sat next to Shen Qingyu.
Shen Qingyu opened his mouth, about to say, “That’s Yang Yu’s seat,” but was silenced by Lu Xiao’s glare.
He thought: What is wrong with this guy? Why is he always so angry?
“I didn’t expect to see you… guys,” Shen Qingyu said.
Chen Qiming said: “We were bored after the college entrance exam, so Xiao Ge and I just messed around for fun. It’s quite entertaining.”
Shen Qingyu hadn’t expected that Lu Xiao, who was a late sleeper and late riser at school, would have a whole new identity late at night during the holiday, in a lively bar.
“Let me buy you a drink,” Chen Qiming ordered two drinks on the mini-program. “They’re both the signature drinks here.”
“Drink what? Get drunk and cause a scene? I’d be embarrassed,” Lu Xiao said coldly.
Shen Qingyu originally wanted to refuse, but hearing Lu Xiao’s comment, his temper flared. He retorted: “What’s it to you?”
Chen Qiming grinned: “Yeah, Xiao Ge, if anyone’s going to be embarrassed, it’s Little Yu. What’s it to you?”
Lu Xiao gripped his glass: “Are you two close?” He’s even calling him “Little Yu.”
“We’ll get closer if we chat more, right?”
“Chat about what? Chat with me too.” Yang Yu returned after having a round of drinks, completely tipsy. He very proactively sat next to Chen Qiming, belched, and leaned back on the chair, dozing off.
The drinks arrived. Shen Qingyu was worried that Yang Yu would feel sick from drinking too much, so he kept an eye on his condition.
This worried expression took on a different meaning in Lu Xiao’s eyes.
Lu Xiao sneered internally. Hooking up with Cheng Che in the dorm and now hooking up with this other gay guy outside. His love life is certainly exciting.
Shen Qingyu casually picked up a glass and took a few sips. The spicy, strong taste shot straight to his head. He realized he had grabbed the wrong glass, put it down awkwardly, and forced himself to swallow the alcohol.
He actually picked up Lu Xiao’s glass!
As expected, Lu Xiao’s eyebrows knitted tightly. Staring at the rim of the glass where Shen Qingyu’s lips had been, an unpleasant feeling surged in his chest.
He disgustedly pushed the drink aside and switched to mineral water.
Caught up in the conversation, Chen Qiming took a photo and posted it on his social media. Cheng Che saw it immediately and texted Shen Qingyu.
【Cheng Che: Are you at a bar? Do you need me to pick you up [Little Rabbit Behaving.jpg]】
Shen Qingyu: No need!
【Cheng Che: Send me the address, I’m worried [Little Rabbit Acting Cute.jpg]】
This adorable emoji directly pierced Shen Qingyu’s heart. He immediately sent Cheng Che his location.
【Shen Qingyu: [Location]】
【Cheng Che: Wait for me, I’ll be there right away】
【Shen Qingyu: No rush! Be careful on the road!】
【Cheng Che: [Little Rabbit Shooting Heart.jpg]】
Even though Shen Qingyu was used to Cheng Che using an emoji in every three sentences, he still blushed upon seeing such an ambiguous image.
As a pure gay man, Shen Qingyu rarely used such mushy emojis, let alone sending them to a same-sex friend.
Why does Cheng Che look more like a gay man than I do?
