Chapter 68: He wanted to see that beautiful pair of eyes filled with…
Shen Qingyu knew Chen Qiming had misunderstood, but Cheng Che returned quickly, so he couldn’t offer any explanation and had to let the misunderstanding continue.
Along the way, Chen Qiming’s gaze made Shen Qingyu feel somewhat self-conscious. Yet, before Shen Qingyu could express any dissatisfaction, Cheng Che voiced his first.
“Why are you constantly staring at my boyfriend?” Cheng Che deliberately emphasized the word “boyfriend.”
Whether Chen Qiming was truly dense or just playing dumb, he didn’t catch the implied warning and joked brazenly, “Can’t I even look?”
Cheng Che’s face immediately darkened. Shen Qingyu quickly tried to mediate, saying, “Is there something on my face?”
Chen Qiming replied, “No, I just think you’re good-looking.”
Cheng Che’s sharp gaze shot out flames. Only then did Chen Qiming realize something was wrong and quickly said, “I’m straight!”
Of course, he couldn’t say it was because he was trying to figure out what charm Shen Qingyu possessed that had captivated two of the PE College’s most famous heartthrobs. Anxious, he wished he could scratch his butt inside his pants, and surrendered under Cheng Che’s fierce look:
“Alright, although Shen Qingyu is very good-looking, I still can’t imagine what it’s like for two guys to date.”
Shen Qingyu smiled, saying, “Does it need imagining? It’s just like any ordinary heterosexual relationship, no difference.”
Chen Qiming nodded repeatedly.
Cheng Che, however, said sarcastically, “Of course a single dog like you can’t imagine it.”
Chen Qiming felt insulted and stomped off angrily.
Cheng Che and Shen Qingyu weren’t in the same teaching building. Shen Qingyu went inside first, not forgetting to turn around and wave to him, merging into the crowd under Cheng Che’s gaze.
The agreed-upon one-month trial period had ended, and Cheng Che was ecstatic to officially become Shen Qingyu’s boyfriend.
On the first day after shedding the trial period label, Cheng Che posted a relationship announcement on his WeChat Moments.
A picture of two hands clasped, fingers intertwined, captioned “Us.”
In the photo, Cheng Che’s hand was large, completely covering Shen Qingyu’s hand. In contrast to Cheng Che’s wheat-colored skin, Shen Qingyu’s hand looked even fairer and smaller.
The comment section under the post was quite lively. People congratulated Cheng Che on successfully getting into a relationship and asked when he would bring the “sister-in-law” out for them to meet.
Cheng Che knew Shen Qingyu preferred not to publicize his sexual orientation so dramatically, so he could only reply with a look of feigned regret: “Your sister-in-law is easily shy. Maybe another time.” He genuinely looked forward to the day he could hold Shen Qingyu’s hand, introduce him to his friends, and announce to the world that Shen Qingyu belonged to him, Cheng Che.
Shen Qingyu, on the other hand, was not the type to post on Moments; his last post was on Valentine’s Day, which was also his birthday, at the beginning of the year.
Lu Xiao, however, had something to say about Cheng Che posting the announcement while Shen Qingyu didn’t.
One day, when Shen Qingyu woke up from his midday nap, before he even opened his bed curtains, he heard Lu Xiao’s provocative voice:
“Are you in his Moments? I didn’t see it. Why didn’t you post? Didn’t you want to?”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
Shen Qingyu: “???”
First, it was secretly sending him photos of Cheng Che talking to other girls to sow discord, and now it’s this method? This is absolutely too childish!
Cheng Che knew he was saying this on purpose and initially planned to ignore him, but he couldn’t resist, replying coldly: “Whether he posts on Moments or not is his freedom. I don’t need to use that to judge his feelings for me.”
Lu Xiao dramatically “Woah’d”: “You’re really impressive, then.”
Cheng Che felt like he was punching cotton, boiling with suppressed anger.
Shen Qingyu was truly exhausted by their elementary-school-level bickering and made some noise on his bed. As expected, Lu Xiao, hearing that Shen Qingyu was awake, immediately shut up and returned to his game. Cheng Che witnessed his instant change of face and let out a sarcastic chuckle.
…
The weekend was Cheng Che’s cousin’s birthday, so he had to go home on Friday evening. Cheng Che was a little worried about Shen Qingyu being alone in the dorm, afraid that Lu Xiao would take advantage of his absence. So, he wanted to bring Shen Qingyu along to his cousin’s birthday party.
Shen Qingyu immediately dismissed the idea. Going to someone else’s birthday party as a stranger was too bold, and just two days ago, Mom Cheng had inquired about Cheng Che’s partner, making him feel unable to face her.
Cheng Che respected his decision, feeling a little regretful.
After dinner, they were the only two left in the dorm. Lu Xiao seemed to have gone to a bar with Chen Qiming, giving them ample time together.
Cheng Che briefly packed the things he needed to take home, including his cousin’s birthday gift. He stood by the dorm door, looking at Shen Qingyu with reluctance.
“I’ll be back Sunday night,” Cheng Che lowered his voice, reaching out to gently rub Shen Qingyu’s hair. “Be careful alone, and call me anytime if anything happens.”
Shen Qingyu nodded, also feeling a bit sad to see him go.
He looked at Cheng Che’s focused and gentle eyes, and an impulse welled up. Shen Qingyu then stood on his tiptoes and quickly planted a soft kiss on Cheng Che’s lips, a quick touch-and-go, his cheeks flushed. “Be careful on the road.”
Cheng Che was stunned by the sudden, active surprise, his eyes filled with thick, melting fondness. Just as he was about to lean down and deepen the kiss, the sound of the door opening abruptly broke the moment.
“Click.”
Shen Qingyu’s body stiffened. He instinctively turned to look at the dorm door, his heart sinking violently.
He saw Song Yu appear at the door. The door had been pushed open a crack, revealing the dim hallway light outside. He stood there silently, holding a water cup, seemingly having stopped by the water room for a cup of hot water on his way back. Steam curled from the cup’s rim.
His gaze fell directly and unabashedly upon them, or more accurately, on Shen Qingyu’s lips, which were still glistening from the kiss.
Song Yu’s face, usually expressionless and resembling a delicate yet cold sculpture, seemed to have cracked open with a subtle fissure. But his eyes remained filled with indifference and detachment, though hidden beneath was a deep, unreadable gloom. The look was sharp as an ice pick, forcing Shen Qingyu to involuntarily release the edge of Cheng Che’s shirt he was holding.
Shen Qingyu’s heart was racing, intertwined with embarrassment and panic. He had always thought of Song Yu as a high-up, aloof, and unapproachable figure. Having finally managed to become friends with him, only to be caught kissing a guy, Shen Qingyu’s first reaction wasn’t fear of being caught, but a sense of inexplicable shame and worry—would Song Yu think he was disgusting because of this? Would he despise him?
“Song Yu…” Shen Qingyu parted his lips, wanting to explain something, but didn’t know where to start.
Cheng Che also noticed Song Yu. He moved to shield Shen Qingyu behind him, his brows slightly furrowed, displeased by Song Yu’s intense, uncomfortable stare.
But he was in a hurry, so he just gave Song Yu a cold glance. He tightened his grip on Shen Qingyu’s hand, intending to say something to Song Yu, but Song Yu walked past him, shoulder-to-shoulder, without even looking at them, as if he hadn’t seen anything or simply didn’t care what his two roommates were doing.
This was the best outcome for Cheng Che. But Shen Qingyu didn’t think so; he felt a strange, subtle sense of loss.
“You should go now, it’s getting late,” Shen Qingyu said.
Cheng Che nodded. “Okay, contact me anytime if you need anything.” With that, Cheng Che opened the door and left the dorm.
The sound of the door closing echoed clearly in the silent dorm room.
Shen Qingyu stood still, looking helplessly at Song Yu’s retreating back. Song Yu didn’t spare him a single glance. It was then that Shen Qingyu realized something was wrong; even before, Song Yu would exchange a brief greeting when returning to the dorm, but today he said nothing and did nothing.
He walked step by step toward his bunk, his footsteps light, yet they felt like they were tapping on the tip of Shen Qingyu’s heart.
The entire process was so silent it was suffocating for Shen Qingyu. He could even hear the overly rapid thumping of his own heart.
“Song Yu.” Shen Qingyu called out his name uncontrollably.
His steps paused. Song Yu’s gaze finally rested on Shen Qingyu’s face as if granting a favor. His eyes were complex and dark, carrying an undercurrent that Shen Qingyu couldn’t decipher right now, but it was definitely not disgust or contempt.
“What is it?” he said faintly.
“Nothing.” Shen Qingyu hastily lowered his head, regretting his impulsive call. What was he expecting Song Yu to say? Given Song Yu’s personality, saying nothing was normal, wasn’t it?
Song Yu hooked the corner of his mouth, showing an extremely slight curve that barely qualified as a smile, then walked straight back to his bunk.
While Shen Qingyu breathed a sigh of relief, the feeling of unease in his heart intensified.
What he didn’t know was that, in a place he couldn’t see, Song Yu took out his phone and opened an unnamed encrypted photo album, filled with moments of Shen Qingyu he had secretly photographed in various situations—his profile while reading, his joyful back as he walked in the sunlight, and even his sleeping face in the quiet night, with his lips slightly parted in sweet dreams.
These were his most precious treasures.
Song Yu’s finger gently caressed Shen Qingyu’s face on the screen, his eyes sinister and fervent.
It’s time to let my Xiao Yu know that I am the one who has always been watching him. This boring relationship that briefly captured my Xiao Yu’s attention should end. He will come back; his attention will return to me. I am the only one who truly loves him.
Song Yu inserted a SIM card. He had restrained himself from doing this for a long time; the last time he expressed his love for him via text message was months ago. Surely Shen Qingyu must miss his attention.
This time, the content he composed was more direct. He wanted Shen Qingyu to uncover his disguise personally. He wanted to see that beautiful pair of eyes filled with shock and terror for him.
