Chapter 65: Did you tell your boyfriend about us kissing?
Lu Xiao was bored staying alone in the dorm. He refused requests to play games and left the room, walking along the small campus paths. The evening breeze dispelled the last bit of stuffiness he felt from being inside.
He took out his phone and opened Shen Qingyu’s chat interface. The last time Shen Qingyu had proactively messaged him was several days ago. Shen Qingyu had rejected his video call. Right below that was a “What are you doing” Lu Xiao had sent yesterday, which had sunk without a trace.
He scoffed, quickly typing on the screen, then clicked send without hesitation.
The message box held one line of text: [Was the hot pot good? I want some too, I haven’t had dinner yet.]
After sending, he tucked the phone back into his pocket, whistling, his mood inexplicably lifting again. The pain from Cheng Che’s punch seemed to have faded, replaced by a sense of reckless ease.
He knew the road ahead was long and full of obstacles, but Lu Xiao had never intended to easily let go of what he set his sights on. This tug-of-war had only just begun.
Lu Xiao’s WeChat message, filled with a hint of pitifulness, was like a stone thrown into a calm lake, sending circles of unease across Shen Qingyu’s heart.
He didn’t reply, even frantically pressing the screen off, but Cheng Che opposite him had already keenly sensed his abnormality.
“What’s wrong?” Cheng Che asked, his voice calm, but his eyes becoming sharp.
Shen Qingyu subconsciously wanted to hide his phone, but the movement only made him more suspicious. He pursed his lips and whispered, “…Nothing, just spam.”
Cheng Che didn’t press further, but the atmosphere during the latter half of the hot pot dinner was noticeably subdued. Shen Qingyu had a gentle nature and was not good at handling this kind of aggressive, unreasonable entanglement.
Cheng Che also saw through Lu Xiao’s ploy, which was nothing more than trying to use Shen Qingyu’s nature to persistently pester him, gradually deepening his position in Shen Qingyu’s heart.
Cheng Che would absolutely not allow this to happen.
…
Two days later, taking advantage of Shen Qingyu’s afternoon class schedule—when he was in the library studying and not in the dorm—Cheng Che broke the silent atmosphere in the room.
Lu Xiao was sitting in front of his computer playing games, but Cheng Che knew he was definitely not as composed as he looked.
“Lu Xiao, we need to talk,” Cheng Che went straight to the point, his tone deliberately restrained and calm.
As expected, as soon as he spoke, Lu Xiao took off his headphones, leaned back in his chair, and crossed his legs. He raised an eyebrow, seemingly unsurprised, even with a hint of “you finally couldn’t hold it in” understanding.
“Talk about what? What is there for the two of us to talk about? Or are we going to discuss how you plan to monopolize Shen Qingyu?”
Cheng Che’s eyes darkened. “He is my boyfriend. Is there a problem with me monopolizing him?”
Lu Xiao sneered disdainfully, as if he had heard a huge joke. Maybe Shen Qingyu liked him a little too, or he wouldn’t have agreed to be with him, but… Lu Xiao had seen firsthand how Shen Qingyu was soft on him. He didn’t feel like he had lost, at most, he was a step late.
“If you were truly confident, why are you wasting your breath talking to me?”
“Stay away from him.” Cheng Che didn’t want to beat around the bush. “Your actions are already causing him distress.”
The lazy look on Lu Xiao’s face receded slightly. He straightened up, his eyes sharp: “Distress? By what right do you speak for him? Have you asked him what he truly thinks? Or are you simply afraid to ask?”
He stood up and took a step forward, bringing pressure: “That day in the dorm, why did he stop you? Was he truly afraid we would fight, or… was he afraid you would hit me? Cheng Che, you are afraid, afraid that he isn’t so firm in his heart, right?” Lu Xiao was utterly confident about this point.
These words accurately hit Cheng Che’s most secret insecurity.
He was indeed afraid, afraid that Shen Qingyu’s inherent softness and hesitation would be exploited by Lu Xiao’s reckless persistence.
Cheng Che’s face turned cold: “This is between us, and it has nothing to do with you. I am warning you one last time, stop harassing him.”
The conversation was a complete failure.
Cheng Che realized he simply couldn’t use reason or warnings to persuade someone who was fundamentally unreasonable and who had seen through his weakness.
He stared at Lu Xiao, feeling a sense of powerlessness for the first time, a powerlessness stemming from Lu Xiao’s “nothing to lose” attitude.
Seeing that it was almost time for class, Cheng Che didn’t wait for a reply and turned to leave the dorm. But once outside, where Lu Xiao couldn’t see, Cheng Che’s tightly clenched fists betrayed his frustration and anger.
…
Shen Qingyu was unaware of the conversation between Cheng Che and Lu Xiao. He only felt that the atmosphere between the two of them had been tense and strained since that day.
Cheng Che also became even more attentive, and this attentiveness even carried a subtle tension and carefulness, as if he was afraid that if he failed in some way, Shen Qingyu would stop liking him.
In the dorm, he no longer spoke to Lu Xiao unless necessary. After classes, he always carried his bag to the library, and on weekends, he would go out with Cheng Che or play games at Cheng Che’s house.
But whenever Lu Xiao’s name was mentioned by others, or Lu Xiao’s figure appeared in the distance, Cheng Che would instantly fall silent, a dark look flickering in his eyes, and then he would grip Shen Qingyu’s hand even tighter, as if confirming something.
This silent, suppressed anxiety hurt Shen Qingyu more and made him feel guiltier than any direct questioning.
Shen Qingyu could no longer deceive himself; this situation was due to his own lack of decisive action, his hesitation, which had plunged his boyfriend into such anxious emotions.
Shen Qingyu had considered talking to Lu Xiao proactively, but he really couldn’t handle Lu Xiao’s personality. If it happened again, and Lu Xiao said something like “homewrecker” or “dog,” he would probably freeze up completely.
He felt the best way was to keep his distance. As long as he minimized contact and conversation with Lu Xiao, his novelty would eventually wear off. This was the best approach.
Cheng Che also sensed his thinking, and his strained mood eased slightly. After class, he would accompany Shen Qingyu on walks around the campus, study in the library, and only return just before the dorm curfew.
And Lu Xiao, even if he understood Shen Qingyu’s intentions, was helpless. Shen Qingyu always found a way to avoid him, which left Lu Xiao feeling very frustrated.
On Wednesday, Shen Qingyu didn’t have classes. He first went to the quiet foreign language section on the fourth floor of the library to study.
His phone on the desk vibrated twice. Shen Qingyu flipped it over to see a private message from Lu Xiao: [I’m on the fourth floor of the library. Come out, we need to talk.]
Shen Qingyu took a deep breath, quickly flipped his phone over, and pretended he hadn’t seen the message. Cheng Che would be arriving soon. He had already saved a spot for Cheng Che, and if he went out to meet Lu Xiao now, he might run into Cheng Che. Moreover… he truly didn’t know how to face Lu Xiao, nor did he want to hear any of his more shocking statements.
Half a minute later, another message popped up: [If you don’t come out, I’m coming in to find you.]
Shen Qingyu’s heart skipped a beat. He looked up and saw Lu Xiao’s figure already appearing not far away, walking towards him.
Lu Xiao stared at him intently. Shen Qingyu immediately stood up, like a startled rabbit, scurrying around.
“Do you have to avoid me like this?” Lu Xiao simply couldn’t accept his behavior of shunning him like the plague, which made him feel ridiculous.
The study room was extremely quiet. Even though Lu Xiao spoke in a low voice, it was still very noticeable. Shen Qingyu, worried about disturbing the other students, bit his lip, glared at him fiercely, and then left the study room.
Lu Xiao followed closely behind him.
“Lu Xiao, what exactly do you want?”
“Just five minutes,” Lu Xiao followed closely. “I’ll leave after I say what I need to.”
Shen Qingyu quickened his pace, but Lu Xiao grabbed his wrist, forcefully pulling him towards the direction of the restroom.
“Let go of me!” Shen Qingyu cried out in a low voice.
Lu Xiao was very strong. In no time, a red mark appeared around Shen Qingyu’s wrist, and he couldn’t break free.
The restroom was just around the corner. Shen Qingyu was forcibly pulled in by Lu Xiao, pushed against a stall, and the door was swiftly locked.
The stall was poorly lit and dim. Shen Qingyu was pressed against the door by Lu Xiao. He was breathing heavily, his face defensive.
“Are you that afraid of me?” Lu Xiao blocked the door, his tall figure casting an oppressive shadow. “Or are you afraid of yourself?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Shen Qingyu turned his face away.
“You do,” Lu Xiao’s voice lowered. “You know how I feel about you…”
“That’s your business!” Shen Qingyu interrupted him. “I have a boyfriend now!”
“So what if you have a boyfriend? You won’t be together forever,” Lu Xiao sneered. “And, did you tell your boyfriend about us kissing?”
Shen Qingyu froze completely: “That happened before! And I didn’t do it willingly.”
“But you didn’t firmly push me away afterward, did you?” Lu Xiao moved closer. His body was filled with raw, animalistic strength, like a wall that made Shen Qingyu’s legs feel weak. “Shen Qingyu, you have feelings for me. Don’t deny it.”
“I don’t!” Shen Qingyu raised his voice, his heart pounding like a drum. “That was just… just a moment of confusion.”
“A moment of confusion?” Lu Xiao’s eyes were dark. “Then why don’t you dare tell Cheng Che? Why are you avoiding me? Because you feel guilty.”
Shen Qingyu’s face turned pale. Just then, Lu Xiao suddenly reached out, cupped the back of his neck, and kissed him forcefully.
This kiss was no different from the previous one with Lu Xiao—rough, dominant, and full of possessiveness. Shen Qingyu froze for a second, then exploded with unprecedented force, shoving Lu Xiao hard and raising his hand to deliver a loud slap across his face.
“Don’t touch me!” His voice trembled, his eyes red. “I’ll say this one last time, stay away from me!”
Lu Xiao touched his swelling cheek, a hint of hurt flashing in his eyes. “Do you hate me that much?”
Shen Qingyu closed his eyes briefly. When he opened them, they were clouded with moisture, and he said firmly: “Lu Xiao, I don’t hate you, and I genuinely saw you as a friend. But if you disrespect me like this again…”
“I will request to switch dorms, or move out to live off-campus. In short, I will never see you or speak another word to you. That is when I will truly hate you.”
