Chapter 55: (Revised) “He also really wanted to prove himself…”
Shen Qingyu bit his lip, his brain spinning rapidly, trying to find a way to make the current situation less awkward.
Just as he was about to give up and face the consequences, he suddenly heard someone shouting his name outside the door.
“Shen Qingyu? Where are you? Where did you run off to?”
It was Lu Xiao’s voice.
Alarm bells were ringing loudly in Shen Qingyu’s mind.
He absolutely could not let Lu Xiao see him alone with Cheng Che, otherwise, with Lu Xiao’s tendency to make a scene, they might end up fighting.
Shen Qingyu swore this was his most alert and sharpest moment. He exchanged a look with Cheng Che and quickly said before Cheng Che could speak, “I’ll go out first? Can you wait a little longer?”
He felt a little worried that Cheng Che might be unhappy after saying that, but unexpectedly, Cheng Che nodded in strong agreement: “Okay, you go out first.”
Cheng Che’s thoughts were simple: he was willing to do whatever Shen Qingyu asked of him. Moreover, the unresisted kiss was already a reward for him.
So Shen Qingyu took two deep breaths and walked out calmly.
Fortunately, this room was the first one around the corner. When he came out, Lu Xiao was facing away from him, so he didn’t see him emerge from the room.
“Where did you go? You’ve been gone for so long. I thought you got lost,” Lu Xiao said.
Shen Qingyu was afraid to look him in the eye and spoke quickly, “I just went to the restroom. This place is too big and confusing, I almost couldn’t find my way back.”
“See? I knew it.” Lu Xiao sounded a little proud. “I know you, right?”
“You do.” Shen Qingyu felt guilty. “You’re amazing.”
“Naturally.” Lu Xiao seemed to detect something amiss. He suddenly lowered his head and cupped Shen Qingyu’s face. Shen Qingyu was forced to look up and meet his gaze.
“Why are your eyes and face so red?” Lu Xiao frowned. “Are you getting a fever? You’re so hot.” Saying that, he moved his hand and touched his forehead, murmuring, “Not hot…”
Shen Qingyu’s throat bobbed. “No fever. It must be too stuffy in here…”
Lu Xiao had been drinking, so his mind wasn’t very sharp. He thought that sounded reasonable and nodded, saying, “Should I go outside with you to get some air?”
“No need.” Shen Qingyu remembered Cheng Che was still waiting inside to come out. He actively grabbed Lu Xiao’s arm and said, “Let’s hurry back. Don’t let them wait.”
Now, all of Lu Xiao’s attention was on his arm. The feel of Shen Qingyu’s palm was warm and soft. He suppressed his inner urge, desperately wanting to pull his hand off his arm and hold it instead.
Of course, he could only think about it. If he dared to do that, Shen Qingyu would definitely get angry. Although Shen Qingyu looked quite cute and interesting when angry, Lu Xiao preferred to see him happy.
Cheng Che returned after them and was immediately surrounded by Chen Qiming.
Chen Qiming said earnestly, “Chezi, you’re so disingenuous.”
Cheng Che: “?”
“Did you think you could hide and avoid drinking by leaving? Impossible!” Chen Qiming heavily pressed his hand onto Cheng Che’s shoulder a few times.
Cheng Che helplessly shook off his hand. “Look at yourself. You can’t even speak clearly, and you’re still drinking?”
“Nonsense! I’m completely sober right now.” Chen Qiming had dark skin and was almost invisible in the shadow, only his small, wide-open eyes occasionally gleamed.
Cheng Che couldn’t be bothered to argue with him. He humored him like a child, saying, “Fine, you’re not drunk. I’m talking nonsense.” He sat down and poured himself a glass of juice to soothe his throat.
As the juice moistened his mouth, Cheng Che realized where the faint fruity taste he had vaguely sensed during the kiss with Shen Qingyu had come from.
Shen Qingyu must have been drinking juice just now. No wonder.
Cheng Che lowered his eyelids, looked at the cup for a while, and couldn’t help but let the corners of his mouth lift into a sweet smile.
…
The group drank until early morning. Some were tired, others drunk. The school gates were already closed, so they had to stick it out here until the school reopened.
The shrill alarm clock suddenly went off. Shen Qingyu, who was sleeping with his head on the table, jolted and woke up. He checked the time; it was past six in the morning. They had actually stayed at the KTV all night.
He nudged the people next to him awake, and they grabbed some breakfast on the way back to school.
This was Shen Qingyu’s first time staying out all night. His head felt filled with glue. All he wanted now was sleep, just good, deep sleep.
They went straight back to the dorm. When he opened the door, he saw Song Yu standing at the entrance, looking like he was about to leave.
Shen Qingyu paused briefly and greeted him: “Morning, Song Yu.”
Song Yu’s eyes narrowed, scanning him up and down. Cheng Che and Lu Xiao were standing right behind him. They had dropped the completely drunk Chen Qiming off at his dorm first before returning.
Lu Xiao: “Why aren’t you going in?”
Song Yu pursed his lips and stepped aside.
Cheng Che said, “I’m going to wash up first.”
Shen Qingyu quickly responded. As he brushed past Song Yu’s shoulder, he heard Song Yu ask, “You drank a lot of alcohol.”
Shen Qingyu slowly realized that Song Yu was showing concern for him. He smiled and said, “Not much. Cheng Che and Lu Xiao wouldn’t let me drink too much.”
He was telling the truth. Every time Chen Qiming shamelessly tried to pressure him into drinking, either Cheng Che or Lu Xiao would step in. The two of them were like they were playing some boring competition, determined not to let Shen Qingyu drink alcohol suggested by other men. Since his low alcohol tolerance was evident and he didn’t want to act drunk on Cheng Che’s birthday, he accepted their care without feeling guilty.
But unexpectedly, the moment he said those words, Song Yu’s expression froze.
The lenses of his glasses reflected an unusual light. Shen Qingyu couldn’t see the pupils beneath, but he could feel the sudden drop in temperature around him.
Shen Qingyu had no idea how suggestive his words sounded. As if the other two men had a particularly intimate relationship with him, giving them the right to manage his drinking.
“Are you going to the library?” Shen Qingyu proactively changed the subject.
Song Yu slightly turned his head, his gaze intensely fixed on him. In that second, Shen Qingyu saw his pitch-black pupils. The moment their eyes met, Shen Qingyu felt like he was about to be sucked into those deep, swirling eyes. He felt a moment of panic, stepped back half a step, and bumped his entire body against the door.
“Not the library. I’m going to a transfer interview,” Song Yu concealed the sharp look in his eyes, his tone neutral.
Shen Qingyu replied with an “Oh,” thinking, I definitely overreacted just now. Did I actually think Song Yu… was scary?
He chuckled lightly and said, “Then I wish you good luck with the interview!”
“Thank you.”
After only a few words, Song Yu opened the door and left. Shen Qingyu thought for a moment, leaned on the door, and poked his head out, calling to Song Yu in the hallway: “Song Yu!”
Song Yu stopped, slowly turning around. He stood bathed in the morning light, which made his figure appear even taller.
“What is it?”
Shen Qingyu dramatically waved his hand: “Nothing, I just wanted to tell you—”
“You can definitely do it! Don’t be nervous! I believe in you!”
The corners of Song Yu’s mouth curled into a slight smile. His hands, which had been hanging loosely at his sides, clenched slightly, then relaxed after a moment. His clear and pleasant voice floated to Shen Qingyu’s ears. He said, “Okay.”
“What are you spacing out for?”
Cheng Che’s voice came from behind. Shen Qingyu jumped in surprise, turning around to meet his clear, dog-like eyes.
“Nothing. I was just talking to Song Yu. Are you done showering?”
Cheng Che’s hair was damp, with beads of water dripping down his temples. Shen Qingyu poked a water droplet on his collarbone. “Why didn’t you dry your hair?”
“I was afraid you’d wait too long. You go wash up first. I’m not in a hurry,” he said gently.
Shen Qingyu didn’t argue with him and took his towel to the bathroom. Cheng Che was very meticulous and wiped the water near the bathroom door beforehand to prevent him from slipping. Standing in front of the mirror, enveloped in the warm steam, Shen Qingyu felt all the pores of his body open up.
He quickly finished showering and drying his hair, then hung up his towel.
His freshly dried hair was very fluffy. Shen Qingyu combed it a few times in front of the mirror, but it was still a bit messy. He pressed down on his hair with both hands several times.
Lu Xiao passed him on his way to the bathroom to shower and noticed Shen Qingyu’s frustrated expression. He asked curiously, “What’s wrong?”
Shen Qingyu waved his hand and said, “Nothing, just my hair is a little messy.”
Lu Xiao forcefully pulled his hand away and examined his hair seriously: “I don’t think it’s messy.” Saying that, he reached out and ruffled his hair.
Shen Qingyu’s hair still retained the warmth of the hairdryer’s hot air, carrying a hint of dampness. Lu Xiao felt his palm tickle.
“Stop it!” Shen Qingyu let out a warning sound like an aggressive small animal, but it didn’t scare Lu Xiao at all.
Lu Xiao only let him go after a long playful tussle. Shen Qingyu put on a grumpy face, climbed onto his bed with his messy hair, drew his curtain shut, and fell into a deep sleep.
He woke up at two in the afternoon. The dorm curtains were drawn, letting in no light, making the entire room feel like nighttime. Shen Qingyu sat up and rubbed his eyes. He lifted a corner of the curtain and saw Lu Xiao sleeping soundly on the opposite bed.
But Cheng Che on the diagonally opposite bed was already awake, leaning against the wall and looking at his phone.
The faint light from the screen shone on his face, making his features look very sharp.
Cheng Che quickly noticed Shen Qingyu’s gaze, lifted his eyelids, and saw his furry head poking out, like a little hamster.
【Cheng Che: Hungry?】
Shen Qingyu, who hadn’t felt hungry until now, suddenly heard his stomach rumble twice when he saw the message. It was loud in the quiet dorm.
Shen Qingyu felt a little embarrassed. He sheepishly dropped the curtain, retreated under his blanket, and messaged back.
【Shen Qingyu: A little hungry, but too lazy to move. Don’t want to go downstairs.】
Cheng Che seemed to have anticipated this reply. He curved his eyebrows, and his slender fingers typed on his phone: “It’s okay. Tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll go downstairs and buy it for you.”
What a good Samaritan… Young Master! Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration internally.
Of course, Shen Qingyu was too embarrassed to let Cheng Che run errands for him, so he firmly refused. This made Cheng Che a little disappointed. He was actually very willing to do things for Shen Qingyu. At least it would prove that Shen Qingyu needed him.
He also really wanted to prove that he was needed by Shen Qingyu.
