Chapter 21: Staying Overnight (3-in-1) – “Stay here tonight…”
Just a second before Lu Xiao thought he was going mad and was about to kiss him, Shen Qingyu used all his strength to shove him away and fled in panic.
Lu Xiao’s intense gaze was fixed on his retreating figure until Chen Qiming’s voice sounded behind him.
“Yo, Brother Xiao, you’re up so early today?” Chen Qiming yawned and draped his arm over Lu Xiao’s shoulder. “What are you looking at? Your eyes are glazed over.”
Lu Xiao shook off his hand, raised his chin, and gestured toward the direction Shen Qingyu fled, smiling mysteriously: “Looking at a rabbit.”
Chen Qiming shivered. Lu Xiao’s tone was intimate and ambiguous, making him feel physically uncomfortable. But he still followed his gaze.
Seeing Shen Qingyu’s back as he scrambled away like a startled rabbit, Chen Qiming blurted out: “What did you do to him this time?”
“This time?” Lu Xiao frowned, his expression displeased. “What could I do to him?”
“I don’t know, but I think he’s pretty scared of you.”
These words successfully froze Lu Xiao in place, as if a bolt of lightning had struck him.
Yes, Lu Xiao was slightly offended.
“He’s scared of me?” he gnashed his teeth.
Chen Qiming didn’t realize Lu Xiao was about to explode and continued to fan the flames: “It’s obvious, okay? Look how cute and well-behaved he is when he’s with Cheng Che, but when he’s with you he just… Fuck, ow, ow, ow!”
He was interrupted mid-sentence by a hard elbow to the ribs from Lu Xiao.
Lu Xiao was already angry because Chen Qiming said Shen Qingyu was afraid of him, and hearing him compare himself to Cheng Che made him even more furious.
Lu Xiao was grinding his back teeth and his face was livid. Chen Qiming clutched his stomach and looked at him, feeling like Lu Xiao looked as if his wife had run off with someone else.
“Do I look scary?” Lu Xiao began to doubt himself.
Chen Qiming wouldn’t dare tell the truth, forced to lie: “No, you don’t. Brother Xiao, you’re handsome and distinguished.”
Note: Lu Xiao is described as having sharp features, a height of nearly 1.9m, and muscular build, making him intimidating and unapproachable.
…
The Date with Cheng Che
The weather was lovely on the weekend. Shen Qingyu chose a brightly colored T-shirt, carefully styled his hair, and even sprayed perfume. Undoubtedly, Shen Qingyu was very eye-catching. He had absolute confidence in his appearance.
Soon, Cheng Che appeared in the mirror, wearing a white T-shirt and washed jeans, standing by the window. He smiled brightly, full of youthful spirit.
This strong sense of youthful vitality attracted Shen Qingyu, who was more reserved. This was their first private “date.”
“Shall we go? Should we take the subway or a taxi?” Cheng Che gave him the choice.
“Let’s take the subway. We have plenty of time anyway.”
Cheng Che noticed Shen Qingyu’s mask was crooked and gently reached out to adjust the cord, inevitably touching his earlobe. Shen Qingyu felt a rush of current.
“Just adjusting it for you.” Cheng Che smiled.
“…Thank you.” Shen Qingyu quickly looked away.
Analogy: Cheng Che gave Shen Qingyu the feeling of the “bright sun,” like a gentle spring breeze.
Cheng Che ruffled his hair, which Shen Qingyu resisted: “I just styled my hair!”
“Alright, alright, I’ll help you fix it,” Cheng Che said with a very gentle tone.
Before leaving the dorm, Shen Qingyu glanced at Lu Xiao, who was leaning against the wall playing on his phone, looking unconcerned.
But once the dorm door closed, Lu Xiao couldn’t sit still.
He snatched off the soundless headphones and rushed to put on his coolest outfit: a black Balenciaga T-shirt, camouflage utility pants, a Chrome Hearts necklace, and his brightest earrings and limited-edition sneakers.
Lu Xiao styled his hair, thinking: “This is definitely going to captivate Shen Qingyu, right?”
He tried some perfume but decided: “It definitely doesn’t smell as good as Shen Qingyu.” He left, hands in his pockets, looking very swaggering.
…
Lu Xiao Interrupts the Date
Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che first watched a nearly three-hour sci-fi movie. Leaving the crowded exit, Cheng Che naturally shielded him.
Shen Qingyu inhaled Cheng Che’s light citrus perfume, finding the scent very fitting for him.
Cheng Che waited for him outside the restroom. Shen Qingyu went in to fix his hair. As he was about to step out, someone suddenly grabbed his arm and shoved him into a cubicle.
“What, scared?” Lu Xiao smiled wickedly.
Shen Qingyu’s heart pounded: “Why are you here?!”
Lu Xiao was annoyed: “Do you own this place? I can’t come here?”
“Cheng Che is still waiting for me.”
Lu Xiao’s face instantly changed. He squeezed the hand on Shen Qingyu’s waist hard, making him cry out in pain.
“You!”
Lu Xiao suddenly let go: “Let’s go.”
Shen Qingyu quickly pushed the door open. Seeing Shen Qingyu and Lu Xiao emerge one after the other, Cheng Che’s expression darkened.
“Why are you here?” Cheng Che asked.
“I came to walk around,” Lu Xiao shrugged.
Lu Xiao provocatively suggested: “Why don’t we tag along?”
Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che cursed Lu Xiao inwardly but didn’t refuse. They walked close together, making the swaggering Lu Xiao look like an accidental bystander.
Passing a lottery booth, Shen Qingyu suggested buying tickets for fun. Lu Xiao scoffed but joined in. He won nothing. Shen Qingyu was excited, but also won nothing, saying, “consider it a donation.” Cheng Che won 200 yuan.
Lu Xiao was irritated: “That’s it?”
Shen Qingyu bumped him with his elbow: “Say that after you’ve won something!”
Cheng Che gave the winning ticket to Shen Qingyu, telling him to cash it in. Shen Qingyu happily agreed.
Lu Xiao was so annoyed by this flirting that he transferred 520 yuan to Shen Qingyu, saying it was for lottery tickets and challenging Cheng Che.
Shen Qingyu immediately clicked ‘Refund’: “Why would I want your money?”
Cheng Che shielded Shen Qingyu: “If he doesn’t want it, stop forcing him.”
Lu Xiao, angry, pushed Cheng Che aside: “I wasn’t talking to you.”
Cheng Che hit the wall with a dull thud.
Shen Qingyu rushed to help Cheng Che: “Are you okay!” He then scolded Lu Xiao: “If you don’t know how to interact with people, go learn. Don’t be so rough all the time.”
Lu Xiao was forced to back down.
Cheng Che smoothed things over: “I’m fine. Let’s go eat.”
Lu Xiao stood behind them. Seeing him look dejected like a homeless dog, Shen Qingyu’s heart softened.
Shen Qingyu called out: “Lu Xiao, let’s go.” Lu Xiao, feeling like a dog called by its owner, quickly followed.
Later, while shopping for a birthday gift for his aunt, Shen Qingyu only bought a necklace because his budget was limited. Lu Xiao offered to pay for the bracelet, but Shen Qingyu refused, saying, “Why would you give a gift for my aunt’s birthday!”
Cheng Che then tried to take a taxi back to school to avoid Lu Xiao, but Shen Qingyu was confused, preferring to walk. Lu Xiao jumped on this, saying, “You take a taxi, Shen Qingyu and I will walk.”
Shen Qingyu immediately refused: “No, I’ll take a taxi with Cheng Che.”
Lu Xiao was stunned by the repeated rejection, feeling confused and helpless. He realized he was utterly failing.
They took a ride-hailing car. Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che sat in the back, while Lu Xiao sat alone in the front, watching them through the rearview mirror. Shen Qingyu was sleepy, and Cheng Che watched his profile, smiling. Lu Xiao thought: So sickeningly sweet.
…
Song Yu’s Secret
On his aunt’s birthday, Shen Qingyu ate dinner at her house. He didn’t stay long, not wanting to disturb the family reunion. He rode a shared bike back to his own apartment.
Entering the complex, he heard an argument. The voice sounded familiar—cold, indifferent, and trembling. It was Song Yu. Shen Qingyu turned towards the sound and stumbled upon Song Yu’s hidden secret.
A blond teenage boy, wearing flashy clothes, was insulting Song Yu: “Who doesn’t know your mother is the other woman who interfered with my parents’ marriage!” He called Song Yu a “bastard child.”
Song Yu stood with his back straight, silently enduring the humiliation.
When the boy grabbed Song Yu’s collar and then raised his fist, Shen Qingyu rushed forward: “Song Yu!”
Shen Qingyu quickly linked his arm with Song Yu’s, looking supportive.
The boy challenged him: “Then do you know his mother is a mistress?”
Shen Qingyu squeezed Song Yu’s tense arm and calmly said: “Oh.”
The boy was enraged: “Didn’t you hear me? He and his mother interfered with my parents’ relationship!”
Shen Qingyu looked at him with pity: “A cold knowledge: no one gets to choose their birth. Instead of criticizing an innocent person here, you should ask why your father couldn’t control his lower body.”
“Let’s go,” Shen Qingyu pulled on Song Yu’s arm.
Because of Shen Qingyu’s protective words, Song Yu felt an unprecedented sense of relief. “Okay,” he said, looking deeply at Shen Qingyu and smiling faintly.
…
Drunken Vulnerability
The air was quiet. Shen Qingyu suddenly wondered if he had gone too far, but then he saw a faint smile at the corner of Song Yu’s eye.
“You heard everything, didn’t you?” Song Yu asked.
Shen Qingyu stammered: “I didn’t mean to.”
Song Yu chuckled: “I’m not blaming you. Why are you so timid?”
Song Yu adjusted his glasses. Shen Qingyu noticed a crystalline moisture at the corner of his eyes—tear stains. He believed Song Yu was using a calm exterior to hide his pain.
Song Yu asked: “Do you want to know?” Shen Qingyu replied: “That’s your privacy… I won’t pry.”
“Thank you.”
“We’re friends, don’t mention it,” Shen Qingyu patted his back. “Have you eaten?”
“Not yet. Can you keep me company for dinner?”
“Of course!”
They went to a small restaurant. Song Yu was attentive, cleaning the table and utensils.
Song Yu ordered four bottles of beer. Shen Qingyu was hesitant, but Song Yu said softly: “I’m not in a good mood, and I want to have a drink.”
Shen Qingyu couldn’t resist his vulnerability: “Drink whatever you want! I’ll take you home if you drink too much!”
After three bottles, Song Yu was very drunk. He was talking quickly and illogically, but he was a good drunk, only appearing weary and tired.
“Stop drinking. Let me take you home.”
“Good, you take me,” Song Yu murmured.
Shen Qingyu helped him up. Song Yu leaned his head on Shen Qingyu’s shoulder and gently inhaled the clean scent of his hair. He even gently brushed Shen Qingyu’s bangs away from his forehead. Shen Qingyu thought he was completely drunk because he spoke with such a tender and intimate tone.
…
Staying Overnight
They arrived at Song Yu’s two-bedroom apartment, which was empty and dark. “This is the house my mother and I used to live in,” Song Yu said sadly. “She moved out later.” The place was almost bare.
Song Yu finished the remaining two beers and became even drunker.
Song Yu groggily rested his head on Shen Qingyu’s shoulder. Shen Qingyu was shocked by the closeness.
“Don’t go,” Song Yu pleaded.
Shen Qingyu tried to stand up to get him water, but Song Yu pressed him back down and naturally lay down on his lap.
Shen Qingyu grew anxious. “Song Yu,” he whispered.
Song Yu opened his eyes and looked at him, his gaze intense. “Then I’ll walk you out,” Song Yu said, rubbing his temple.
Shen Qingyu insisted he stay, but Song Yu was stubborn. Shen Qingyu helped him to his feet, but Song Yu swayed, causing both of them to fall down. Song Yu fell underneath, cushioning Shen Qingyu.
“Song Yu, are you okay!” Shen Qingyu was horrified.
“I’m fine, didn’t hit my head,” Song Yu smiled faintly.
Shen Qingyu felt terribly guilty. Song Yu put a hand over his mouth: “Shh.” He then asked: “Can you help me back to the room?”
Shen Qingyu nodded dumbly: “Okay.”
…
The Aftermath
In the bedroom, Song Yu, completely exhausted, didn’t turn on the light and dragged Shen Qingyu onto the bed.
They lay tangled up. Shen Qingyu was rigid.
“Song, Song Yu…” he whispered.
Song Yu didn’t answer—he had fallen asleep.
As Shen Qingyu hesitated to push him off, he felt a cold water drop hit his neck.
Song Yu murmured in his sleep: “Don’t leave me…”
This tear and his vulnerable plea completely triggered Shen Qingyu’s sympathy. He decided to stay until Song Yu was deeply asleep.
One hour later, Shen Qingyu, exhausted, also fell asleep.
Half an hour after that, Song Yu propped himself up, staring intently at the sleeping Shen Qingyu.
He touched Shen Qingyu’s lips with his thumb. When Shen Qingyu licked his lips in his sleep, Song Yu felt a rush of heat.
Song Yu then took a blurry photo of him with his phone and leaned down to kiss his lips.
He pressed his fist hard against the bed, the veins popping on his hand, thinking, desecrating the divine felt easy.
Song Yu then went to the restroom, his lower body aching. He looked at his flushed, red-eyed reflection in the mirror with a satisfied smile.
The sound of low, husky panting mixed with the running water could be heard from the bathroom.
Shen Qingyu woke up an hour later, confused by the dark, unfamiliar room. He saw Song Yu standing by the window.
“You’re awake,” Song Yu said calmly, turning around.
Shen Qingyu was embarrassed: “Sorry… I fell asleep.”
“Stay here tonight. I have toiletries you can use.” Song Yu walked toward the bed, his footsteps preventing Shen Qingyu from refusing.
