Chapter 19: Listening to Music – 【Cheng Che: Maybe I was missing you…】
While Lu Xiao was washing the dishes, Shen Qingyu remained standing by his side. After watching for a while and realizing that Lu Xiao was quite skillful at washing dishes, he felt relieved and went back to the living room to rest.
It was easy to feel sleepy after dinner. Since he didn’t have classes tomorrow morning, he could stay home for the night, but Lu Xiao was still here, and he couldn’t just leave him and go straight to bed.
So, Shen Qingyu started dropping hints.
“Oh dear, it’s already past six and nearly seven o’clock.”
Shen Qingyu’s tone was slightly exaggerated. He held his phone high and shoved it in front of Lu Xiao’s face.
Lu Xiao immediately knew what he was implying. He scoffed: “Trying to kick me out already?”
Since Lu Xiao paid for the dinner, Shen Qingyu felt a tiny bit guilty: “I am not.”
“Good then,” Lu Xiao said. “I’ll rest a bit longer.”
Shen Qingyu gave a weak smile: “I was worried that if you left too late, the road wouldn’t be safe.”
“Is that so?” Lu Xiao tilted his head, smiling maliciously: “Wouldn’t it be safer if you let me stay here for the night?”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
Why didn’t I realize before that Lu Xiao’s brain worked this fast?
And… Wait a minute! Leaving him here is clearly the most dangerous thing!
“Fine, I’m tired and I want to sleep,” Shen Qingyu admitted honestly.
Lu Xiao lifted his chin and said dismissively: “Go to sleep. Who’s stopping you?”
Shen Qingyu choked, unable to speak.
He had to retract his previous evaluation of Lu Xiao. His brain wasn’t flexible at all; he hadn’t understood what Shen Qingyu was trying to say.
Shen Qingyu’s expression cycled between green and white, all observed by Lu Xiao.
You want to kick me out already? No chance.
Not only was Lu Xiao not leaving, but he was also going to linger here. He knew Shen Qingyu wouldn’t dare to explicitly kick him out.
As for pride or face, he didn’t need any of that.
Shen Qingyu looked at him reproachfully. He eventually gritted his teeth and simply lay down on the sofa to play on his phone, turning his back to Lu Xiao, unwilling to look at him.
His frame was small. Curled up lazily on the sofa, he looked like a haughty little cat, and a grumpy one at that.
Lu Xiao shamelessly observed his back. Completely unlike his initial disgust, why did this little guy look more pleasing to the eye the more he looked at him?
He couldn’t pinpoint when the change happened. Thinking back carefully, it probably started when he figured out Cheng Che was interfering in his relationship.
Viewed this way, Shen Qingyu isn’t very serious about relationships either, letting just anyone—a random cat or dog—get close to him.
Lu Xiao’s expression darkened. He’s so frivolous with his feelings, and yet he still dares to come and seduce me? How audacious!
The sound from the video suddenly stopped. Shen Qingyu remained curled up on the sofa and closed his eyes.
Perhaps the dinner dishes were too salty, making him feel thirsty. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and licked his dry lips.
This tiny action completely mesmerized Lu Xiao.
Although Shen Qingyu loved to play little tricks, if he could genuinely guarantee that he would cut ties with everyone else and honestly stay by his side…
Lu Xiao thought he was willing to give Shen Qingyu a chance to mend his ways.
But he wouldn’t accept him so quickly; he still needed to test him.
Shen Qingyu’s sleep was restless. In his dream, he kept feeling a hot, intense gaze burning him.
He felt scorched by the gaze.
The sofa was narrow. When Shen Qingyu turned over, he let out a low, steady moan.
Lu Xiao captured the sound acutely and looked at him in disbelief.
Shen Qingyu had his head pressed against the crook of his arm, curled up like a baby. His lips were slightly parted, as if he was murmuring something.
Lu Xiao couldn’t hear what he said. He held his breath, not even realizing how careful he was, afraid of accidentally waking this “sleeping beauty.”
Unfortunately, he didn’t speak again. His delicate eyebrows were slightly furrowed, making him look as if he had suffered a great injustice.
“Sleeping so soundly.” Lu Xiao chuckled softly. He pressed his rough thumb onto his Cupid’s bow and ground it slightly: “Even asleep, you don’t forget to seduce people.”
Shen Qingyu slapped his hand away with a crisp sound.
The slight pain was nothing to Lu Xiao, but this was the first time anyone had dared to lay a hand on him, even if that person was asleep.
“Quite the temper.” Lu Xiao withdrew his hand, giving him one last long look, wishing he could engrave his complete image onto his heart.
Before leaving, Lu Xiao didn’t hesitate to enter his bedroom, find a blanket, and cover him.
With a click, the light went out. The empty living room fell silent.
Shen Qingyu’s breathing was steady and strong. Lu Xiao listened quietly for a while before leaving.
By the time Shen Qingyu woke up, Lu Xiao was already back in the dorm. He even left him a message: “I’m back. I didn’t wake you since you were sleeping so soundly.”
…
Lu Xiao was in a good mood. When Cheng Che returned, he took the rare initiative to greet him: “You’re back.”
“Mm.” Cheng Che found it strange, but didn’t overthink it, responding politely.
Lu Xiao had just finished showering. With a towel wrapped around his waist, he shook the water from his hair and said with a hint of provocation: “Did you know Shen Qingyu is quite a good cook?”
Cheng Che paused, then recalled the content he saw on his Moments earlier. His expression instantly stiffened: “Is that so?”
Seeing Cheng Che’s ashen face, Lu Xiao felt incredibly smug.
“Looks like you didn’t know,” he shrugged, his eyes full of arrogance.
His triumphant, tail-wagging demeanor successfully annoyed Cheng Che.
Cheng Che let out a cold laugh, clenching his fists tightly.
Until he received a definite answer from Shen Qingyu, Cheng Che wouldn’t believe Lu Xiao’s statement.
After lights out, Cheng Che couldn’t fall asleep for a long time.
He hesitated for a moment but chose to message Shen Qingyu anyway.
【Cheng Che: Are you asleep?】
【Shen Qingyu: Not yet! I slept in the afternoon, so I’m not sleepy at all now.
His reply was fast, giving Cheng Che some comfort.
【Cheng Che: No class tomorrow morning?】
【Shen Qingyu: That’s right. I’ll head back in the afternoon [Spinning in a circle]】
【Cheng Che: [Little bunny petting head.jpg]】
On the other end of the phone, Shen Qingyu’s cheeks flushed slightly upon seeing the ambiguous emoji. He accidentally typed several typos, deleting them one by one.
【Shen Qingyu: When I went home in the afternoon, you weren’t in the dorm, so I forgot to tell you [Spinning in a circle]】
Cheng Che noticed Shen Qingyu’s fondness for the “spinning in a circle” emoji and subconsciously imagined Shen Qingyu spinning.
Just that one sentence and one emoji completely mollified Cheng Che.
【Shen Qingyu: Don’t you have early class tomorrow? Why aren’t you asleep yet?】
Cheng Che instantly beamed with joy.
He still cares about me, Cheng Che thought.
【Cheng Che: I’m going to sleep right now. What about you?】
【Cheng Che: If you can’t sleep, want to listen to music together?】
Shen Qingyu’s heart fluttered.
He knew that listening to music together was very ambiguous, but somehow, when doing it with Cheng Che, it always felt normal to him.
Before Shen Qingyu could reply, Cheng Che shared a link with him, which jumped to a “listen together” page.
【Cheng Che: Let’s listen to your playlist this time. We’ll listen to mine next time.
A gentle melody slowly began in his earphones. Shen Qingyu closed his eyes, and Cheng Che’s face flashed through his mind.
He wasn’t sleepy to begin with, and now he was even more awake.
Unconsciously, the music switched to the next song, and no new messages appeared in the chat box. Shen Qingyu tapped Cheng Che’s avatar. He thought Cheng Che was asleep, but unexpectedly, Cheng Che quickly noticed.
【Cheng Che: What’s wrong?】
Shen Qingyu: Are you still awake?
【Cheng Che: A bit of insomnia.
【Shen Qingyu: Why?】
The “Other party is typing…” notification repeatedly appeared above the conversation box. Just when Shen Qingyu thought Cheng Che was writing an essay in their chat, a message popped up.
【Cheng Che: Maybe I was missing you [Little bunny shooting hearts.jpg]】
Boom! A plane seemed to fly past the window, emitting a loud roar, and clusters of fireworks exploded in Shen Qingyu’s heart.
He felt more and more confused about what Cheng Che was thinking.
Could he be gay too?
Shen Qingyu took a deep breath, his heart still beating wildly. He hesitated for a moment and replied: “I’ll be back tomorrow [Hugging emoji]”
Will this be too obvious?
But he had already sent it. Cheng Che must have seen it. Recalling it now would only be more embarrassing.
Just as Shen Qingyu was in a dilemma, wishing he could knock himself out until tomorrow morning, Cheng Che also pondered for a long time and then replied: “Waiting for you.”
Shen Qingyu felt his whole body lose strength, collapsing onto the bed. The soothing rhythm tapping on his eardrums slowly brought on sleepiness.
…
Shen Qingyu slept until eleven o’clock. He returned to school feeling refreshed and had lunch.
No one was in the dorm, so he cleaned the room alone.
Cheng Che was the first to return. He must have rushed out of the classroom immediately after class and sprinted all the way back.
Shen Qingyu looked at the time in surprise. The last class in the morning ended at 12:00, and Cheng Che arrived at the dorm at 12:06.
“You…”
“You…”
They spoke at the same time.
Cheng Che bent his puppy eyes, gesturing for him to speak first.
“You’re sweating a lot,” Shen Qingyu said.
Cheng Che paused, then lifted his shirt to wipe the sweat from his forehead and neck: “Maybe it’s just hot.”
Liar, Shen Qingyu thought. It’s obviously because you ran back.
But he chose not to expose him. Instead, he subtly glanced at Cheng Che’s abs—tanned, firm, and attractive; not overly exaggerated, just perfectly toned.
Cheng Che noticed where he was looking and smiled: “Did you sleep well last night?”
“Very well.”
“Me too.” Cheng Che paused for a moment, getting straight to the point: “You had dinner with Lu Xiao yesterday, right?”
“How could you guess that?” Shen Qingyu was startled.
Cheng Che’s expression was slightly unnatural, but he tried hard to control it so as not to scare him: “I saw his post on Moments.”
“He helped me with a small favor, and I said I would treat him to dinner…” Shen Qingyu recounted the whole incident, omitting the part about Song Anran being deceived by the scumbag.
While he was speaking, Cheng Che watched him without moving, as if the person in front of him was his whole world. Shen Qingyu felt creeped out by the intense gaze, unsure if Cheng Che was even listening to his words.
Cheng Che said: “I didn’t know you could cook.”
“I live alone, so I have to master some life skills. Plus, I actually enjoy cooking; it gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I’ll let you try it next time.”
Cheng Che’s heart felt bubbly with happiness at his words: “I’ll cook for you next time.”
“You can cook?”
Cheng Che shook his head: “I can learn beforehand.”
