Chapter 2: Obtaining the Marriage Certificate
Jiang He washed his face and changed into clean clothes before following Jiang Xu downstairs. Three people were sitting in the living room. The two older individuals were Qi Xu’s parents, but the young man sitting regally in the center, dressed in a sharp suit, was the current head of the Qi family—Qi Hanchuan.
That face was incredibly striking. Even sitting there silently, he possessed a magnetic pull. Jiang He had loved beautiful things since he was a child, and people were no exception; he couldn’t help but stare for a moment.
Although Qi Hanchuan exuded an aura of coldness, Jiang He wasn’t afraid at all. Instead, he gave the man a friendly smile.
Upon seeing Jiang He, Zhang Yaqin called out with a face full of kindness, “Xiao He, come over to Auntie’s side so I can look at you. Xiao Xu did something wrong recently because he listened to the instigation of others. We are here today to apologize. As soon as Xiao Xu can get out of bed, Auntie will have him come to apologize to you immediately.”
Jiang He didn’t go over. Instead, he sat in the empty seat next to Jiang Chenwei. With a smile on his face but merciless words, he said: “Auntie Zhang, I’m not marrying Qi Xu. He said I was disgusting and cheated right in front of my face. Since that’s the case, the engagement is…”
Before he could finish, Zhang Yaqin interrupted anxiously: “Xiao He, this engagement cannot be canceled. Our two families are old family friends, and your grandfather was good brothers with Qi Xu’s grandfather. If the engagement is broken, the elders would be heartbroken. We can discuss anything. Xiao Xu is clumsy with words and acts recklessly, but he certainly doesn’t truly hate you.”
If they lost the Jiang family’s help, how could Qi Xu compete for power against his cousins in the future? Moreover, the Old Master had explicitly ordered that the engagement could not be dissolved; he told them to find a way to stabilize the Jiang family, or else Qi Xu would be held accountable.
Although she didn’t want her son to marry a man, they had no choice. The Jiang family had no daughters, and the Jiangs doted on Jiang He enough that they would surely fully support Qi Xu once they were married. Her plan, discussed with Qi Xu from the start, was to divorce Jiang He once Qi Xu secured management rights.
Who knew Qi Xu would be so impatient? The wedding date was approaching, and he couldn’t even hold back for a few days. He was caught red-handed cheating and beaten so badly by Jiang Xu that he couldn’t get out of bed—and the Qi family didn’t even have a reason to demand an explanation from the Jiangs.
“I didn’t say I wanted to cancel the engagement.” Jiang He tilted his head and smiled, pointing a finger at Qi Hanchuan. “I’ll marry him.”
Seeing Qi Hanchuan’s expression remain unchanged, Jiang Chenwei immediately scolded: “Xiao He, don’t be rude.”
Jiang He withdrew his hand and asked Qi Hanchuan playfully, “Can you marry me?”
Zhang Yaqin and Qi Youwei exchanged a look and hurriedly spoke up: “Xiao He, Ah Chuan is Xiao Xu’s Youngest Uncle. How can you marry him?”
Qi Hanchuan was already the head of the Qi family. If he gained the support of the Jiang family, would the younger generation ever have a chance to take power from him?
“Why not? I never even dated Qi Xu. Since Qi Xu violated the engagement by cheating first, I naturally have the right to choose a new fiancé.”
Jiang He briefly shifted his gaze away from Qi Hanchuan’s superior features. “Auntie Zhang, you didn’t think I’d still rush to marry your son after he cheated, did you? I’m not a masochist. If you don’t want to cancel the engagement, then let me pick my own fiancé.”
Zhang Yaqin wouldn’t give up: “But you and Ah Chuan…”
Jiang He crossed his arms, acting completely unreasonable: “If it won’t work, then let’s just dissolve the engagement. Anyway, I wasn’t the one who cheated before the wedding. The only one whose reputation will suffer is your Qi family.”
That scumbag Qi Xu did such an outrageous thing, and his parents still expected Jiang He to marry him? It was a pipe dream. Was he, Jiang He, some kind of cheap person? To rush to marry a scumbag?
“Xiao He..
Before Zhang Yaqin could finish, Qi Hanchuan, who had been silent, suddenly spoke: “Fine. But I am busy and don’t have time for a wedding ceremony right now. Let’s register for the certificate first. I’ll pick you up in three days.”
“Ah Chuan, how can you…”
Zhang Yaqin was cut off by a sharp glance from Qi Hanchuan. Qi Youwei quickly tugged at his wife’s sleeve and said with a forced smile, “Old Jiang, it’s our Xiao Xu’s fault for letting Xiao He down this time. Since he wants to marry Ah Chuan, then let them marry. They’ll still be family in the end.”
Jiang Chenwei had always looked down on Qi Youwei, a hypocritical villain. He snorted and turned to Qi Hanchuan: “My Xiao He has been spoiled since he was a child. Since you’ve agreed to marry him, I hope you treat him well. If anything similar happens again, our two families won’t need to associate anymore.”
Unlike Qi Xu, Qi Hanchuan had never been rumored to be in a relationship in all these years. This was also Jiang Chenwei’s concern. What if he truly had some kind of “hidden ailment” (impotence)? What would Jiang He do?
But the arrow had been shot; there was no turning back now.
Qi Hanchuan promised in the tone of a junior: “Rest assured, such a thing will not happen again.”
With things settled, Zhang Yaqin knew it was useless to argue further. She stood up with a pale face and left with the group.
Jiang He walked side-by-side with Qi Hanchuan, feeling no awkwardness for a first meeting. Instead, he said naturally, “See you in three days then. I’ll have someone send over the clothes for you to wear. Remember to wear them; the photo on the marriage certificate needs to look good.”
Qi Hanchuan gave a brief “Mhm” before getting into his car and leaving.
After the Qi family left, Jiang Chenwei looked at his younger son with helplessness.
Jiang He playfully patted his father’s chest, looking indifferent. “Don’t look so gloomy. Look how handsome Qi Hanchuan is. Marrying him is way better than marrying that dead scumbag Qi Xu.”
Jiang Chenwei sighed heavily. “After registering, you’ll have to move in with Qi Hanchuan. Tell us immediately if there are any problems.”
Jiang He was only twenty and already getting married; his father felt a lump in his throat.
“It’s not far. I’ll come home whenever I want. Besides, your son isn’t someone who lets himself be bullied. What are you worried about?” Jiang He hurried to the kitchen. “Nanny Wang, get me something to eat. I’m starving.”
Hearing that the person who hadn’t eaten all day finally wanted food, Nanny Wang said happily, “Little Master, wait two minutes, it’ll be ready right away.”
The next day, noise kept drifting into Jiang He’s ears. But it was far too hot today; he felt groggy, and a thin layer of sweat covered his fair forehead. He was in no mood to pay attention to his surroundings.
Qi Hanchuan noticed and thoughtfully lowered the air conditioning temperature. He tried his best not to look at the white T-shirt with a heart he was wearing, turning his head to look at the scenery passing by the window.
He had never planned on marrying Jiang He, but Qi Xu had done something stupid that couldn’t be undone. He could only agree to Jiang He’s demand. Old Master Qi had been saved by Old Master Jiang when he was young and had issued a strict order not to dissolve the engagement, insisting Jiang He marry into the Qi family so the two families could advance together. Qi Hanchuan had no other choice.
Jiang He was lethargic from the heat. As soon as they got out of the car, Qi Hanchuan sent someone to buy him a cold drink. Jiang He looked at the man beside him with surprise, his irritable mood softening slightly.
He looks icy, but he’s actually quite attentive.
Because they had an appointment, the procedure was very fast. In less than five minutes, Jiang He held the marriage certificate for him and Qi Hanchuan.
Both were exceptionally good-looking. Jiang He had been beautiful since childhood, with large eyes that made one’s heart soften. Qi Hanchuan had a more “aggressive” handsomeness. Standing together, they were a perfect match. The staff kept praising them. Jiang He was pleased; looking at Qi Hanchuan’s expressionless face on the certificate, he couldn’t even feel angry.
Qi Hanchuan looked at the bright smile on Jiang He’s face and said coldly, “I need to go to the company. Should I drop you home?”
“Which home?” Jiang He put the certificate in his bag and looked up. “We’re married. Shouldn’t I be moving to your house?”
Recalling the way Jiang He had hugged his parents and cried before leaving this morning, Qi Hanchuan said, “If you don’t want to, you don’t have to move.”
Moreover, he wasn’t used to sharing a room with a stranger. It was just a marriage of convenience; living together wasn’t strictly necessary.
Unexpectedly, Jiang He waved his hand. “My luggage is already packed. Have your people move it from my house. I’m going back to our home.”
If he didn’t live at Qi Hanchuan’s house, how would he see Qi Xu? How would he make that little animal call him “Youngest Aunt” with a reluctant face?
Qi Hanchuan felt a slight jolt at the words “our home,” and his heart rate quickened slightly, though his face showed nothing. “Then I’ll take you home first. I also need to change my clothes.”
“You think the couple’s outfit I bought is ugly?” Jiang He immediately caught the point.
Qi Hanchuan opened the car door for Jiang He first, then sat in beside him. “It’s not ugly. It’s just not suitable for a work environment.”
Jiang He was coaxed by that one sentence. He unceremoniously patted Qi Hanchuan’s solid forearm, asking for the man’s marriage certificate, and took a quick photo to post on his social circle for the official announcement.
Ignoring the explosion of messages, he tossed his phone aside and asked, “Since I’ve married you, will your juniors be coming to our house to see me?”
Qi Hanchuan, who was handling work, replied casually, “I’ll take you to the old residence tomorrow. They will all be there.”
He was a man of few words, answering only when asked. But Jiang He had far too much to say. From the Civil Affairs Bureau to the house, he didn’t stop—chirping away as if he had an endless supply of words.
Qi Hanchuan was a bit unaccustomed; he had never had someone like this around him.
It’s a bit noisy…
Jiang He, keenly aware, leaned in front of Qi Hanchuan’s face. “Do you find me annoying?”
Suddenly bumping into those watery, large eyes, Qi Hanchuan’s hand movements paused slightly. He averted his gaze, pulling himself away from that “spring water,” and uttered two words: “Not annoying.”
It was just that he didn’t know how to answer many of the questions.
Jiang He sat back in his seat, propped his head on his hands, and closed his eyes. His thick eyelashes cast a shadow on his fair face. His clear voice drifted into Qi Hanchuan’s ears: “Okay then, I’ll sleep for a bit. Remember to wake me up when we get home.”
