- Chapter 69 - Initial Suspicions
The next day, Si Tang arrived at the company for work. As she passed through the office area, she faintly overheard employees discussing something.
“Did you see the news yesterday?”
“What news?”
“If you didn’t see it, forget it. The information has already been suppressed, supposedly to avoid causing public panic.”
“What happened? Tell me, don’t keep me hanging.”
“A once-in-a-millennium phenomenon the medical waste incineration site in North City was suddenly covered in blooming flowers overnight. Experts are secretly investigating it now. I suspect the soil might have mutated.”
“Really? I believe in science; this sounds like nonsense.”
“Suit yourself. If you go check out that area now, everyone’s being kept outside the barriers.”
“Is it really that unbelievable? Hey, the vice president is here. Shh, back to work.”
Si Tang glanced at the employees behind the glass windows and returned to her office, mulling over what she had just heard. Her fingers instinctively tapped on a search page, but only fragments of information remained on social media. It was impossible to tell what was true or false.
If there were many things in this world that couldn’t be explained by science.
Si Tang’s mind involuntarily flashed to a blurry figure, a silver fishtail shimmering under candlelight, almost reminiscent of her necklace?
She had often entertained supernatural explanations in the past, but each time she dismissed them. It was just too absurd, too bizarre.
Pulling her thoughts together, her gaze swept across her desk and suddenly landed on the business card Ling Xubai had given her last time.
Ling Xubai a top-tier researcher in science and medicine, with a deep interest in the civilization of Atlantis.
Si Tang took out her phone and dialed the number on the card.
“Hello?” Ling Xubai’s gentle voice came from the other end.
“It’s me, Si Tang,” she said. “I mentioned treating you to a meal last time. Are you free this afternoon?”
There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by a soft cough. Si Tang instinctively furrowed her brows in concern, but he had already replied with a light laugh.
“Of course. It would be my honor.”
After work, Si Tang sent a message to Fan Yiv Xiao Liu and drove to the restaurant where she had arranged to meet Ling Xubai.
It was a Chinese restaurant. As soon as Si Tang entered, she spotted Ling Xubai by the window, bathed in light like a bright moon, exuding an air of profound elegance.
“Hello, Miss Si Tang,” he said upon seeing her, rising with a smile. His eyes briefly scanned behind her, noting the absence of her husband.
Si Tang gave a slight nod and sat opposite him. Just then, a waiter approached with menus for both of them. Ling Xubai instinctively asked, “I don’t see your husband with you?”
Si Tang lowered her head to look at the menu, her fingers pausing slightly at the question. She then looked up with a faint smile. “He’s busy.”
In truth, she had some questions she wanted to explore with Ling Xubai, which was why she hadn’t brought Fan Yi along.
“I see,” he replied, his smile unchanged, though the warmth in his eyes faded slightly.
They finished ordering shortly after. Si Tang had specifically chosen light, low-salt dishes.
Once the waiter left, Si Tang said, “I heard that when you rescued me on the island back then, you were investigating the possible location of Atlantis’s ruins?”
Mentioning this, Ling Xubai’s interest visibly sparked. He nodded and said, “That’s right. At the time, I was frequently conducting research over the Atlantic Ocean. I happened to drift off course due to a typhoon and ended up on the deserted island where you were stranded.”
With her head lowered and eyes downcast, she pondered for a moment before suddenly speaking, “At that time. did you notice anything particularly unusual?”
Ling Xubai instinctively raised a brow slightly as he looked at Si Tang across from him. He had a strong intuition that this Miss Si Tang was harboring some immense secret.
“There were many things,” he recounted calmly. “For instance, Miss Si Tang’s amnesia, or the island’s unnatural ecological environment.”
Si Tang remained silent for a long while, unsure whether she should share those dreams with him for analysis. In the end, she pursed her lips, furrowed her brows, and looked at Ling Xubai.
“Mr. Ling, you’ve studied the civilization of Atlantis for many years. I want to know did the merfolk clan ever exist in Atlantis?”
The air grew still, and just then, their food arrived. Ling Xubai instinctively met her gaze, and neither of them spoke.
After the server left, Ling Xubai spoke in a low voice.
“The trident seal has been verified by the latest batch of salvaged ruins, the very ones your husband donated. What do you think, Miss Si Tang?”
“Trident.” Si Tang unconsciously murmured two words under her breath.
“Poseidon.”
A strange sensation shot through her, as if something was trying to break through her understanding and force her into clarity.
She couldn’t help but bend over slightly, lowering her head and covering her forehead. Complex, chaotic illusions flashed through her mind, but she couldn’t grasp even a trace of coherent thought.
“Are you alright, Miss Si Tang?” Ling Xubai, noticing her sudden pallor, rose worriedly and moved to support her.
“I’m fi” Si Tang’s faint voice was cut off by a sudden, abrupt sound.
“Tang Tang.” Fan Yi’s deep, concerned voice fell by her ear as an arm with a cool temperature wrapped around her waist, pulling her entirely against the newcomer’s shoulder.
Fan Yi placed his other hand against her cheek, his worried gaze fixed on her pale face.
“Are you alright, hmm?” His voice was soft in her ear. He was so close that Si Tang’s vision grew hazy. In that moment, her mind was filled with fragments of those past dreams the surroundings of the hot spring eerily overlapping with the cave on the island.
Fan Yi’s face flickered between clarity and blur.
For a moment, she couldn’t distinguish reality from dream.
Ling Xubai halted his approach, watching as the newcomer embraced Si Tang like a treasured possession, shielding her so completely that he couldn’t even see her face.
“Mr. Fan Yi, Miss Si Tang and I were in the middle of a conversation when she suddenly became like this. Shall I drive you both to the hospital for a check-up?” Ling Xubai offered.
“No need.” As soon as he spoke, Fan Yi realized his tone was somewhat cold and instinctively softened it. “I’ll take my wife myself.”
He stood up and directly lifted Si Tang into his arms.
Ling Xubai was about to mention that Fan Yi’s hand was still injured and it might be inconvenient, but his words died in his throat the moment his eyes fell on Fan Yi’s hands completely unscathed and without a single scar.
After watching Fan Yi quickly carry Si Tang away, Ling Xubai sat back down, his expression dark and thoughtful.
His gaze unconsciously drifted to the window beside him, where he saw the young man named Xiao Six fumbling to open the car door for Fan Yi. The three of them drove off, and Ling Xubai couldn’t help but rest his chin on his hand.
“How intriguing.”
