After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Don’t Look Under the Bed
Jiang Huaiyi didn’t know how long she had been asleep. When she woke up, she was already in the hospital.
When she opened her eyes, she first saw a blurry phantom, and then she saw the IV drip hanging above her.
Shen Wensi, who also looked unwell, was sitting next to her. Her pale lips were tightly pressed together. Her eyes were staring at her without moving.
Jiang Huaiyi opened her mouth, feeling that her throat was very dry. She couldn’t make a sound.
Seeing this, Shen Wensi picked up the water cup next to her and brought it to her mouth. After she drank a couple of gulps, she finally had some life in her.
She grabbed Shen Wensi’s hand, which was trying to leave. Because of her weakness from just waking up, she could only hold it loosely.
Her voice was very weak. The other person could only lean down and put their ear close to her.
“Did… did they all get sent off?”
A weak but powerful voice reached her ears.
Shen Wensi moved the white chair behind her forward and sat down in a comfortable position.
She nestled in it and met Jiang Huaiyi’s gaze.
The person on the hospital bed had red eyes, and her voice was choked with sobs.
She slightly moved her fingers and handed her a tissue.
“They all got sent off. Don’t worry.”
Perhaps it was her previous weeping appearance that had scared her. Jiang Huaiyi felt that Shen Wensi was very gentle today.
Her eyes were not filled with that chilling coldness and arrogance.
Jiang Huaiyi asked tremblingly, “What about that girl?”
She had seen the other person’s final figure, which was that horrifying pile of withered bones in her arms.
She felt a deep sorrow for this poor girl. She had left so decisively.
If Jiang Huaiyi had known that all the secrets were on her, she wouldn’t have thought of sending her away.
Shen Wensi’s expression was very calm: “She’s gone. Actually, you don’t have to blame yourself. If she continued to be trapped, she would only become a soulless killing machine.”
When Jiang Huaiyi heard this, she could no longer hold back her tears. She closed her eyes and no longer looked at Shen Wensi.
The ending was destined, but she still felt very bad in her heart. She had vowed to take everyone out, but she still couldn’t do it.
She used to only think she was timid. In a crisis, even though she was scared to death, she wouldn’t screw up.
She didn’t take the harsh words from her fellow disciples to heart.
But now, her heart felt like it was blocked by a stone, and she couldn’t breathe.
Suddenly, she felt her cheek being brushed by something soft.
She opened her eyes and found that Shen Wensi was wiping her face with a tissue.
Her movements were gentle, but her expression was still as cold as ever.
“I used to underestimate you. I always thought your skills were lacking. I didn’t expect you to be so capable.”
Jiang Huaiyi perked up her ears, a little stunned to hear a positive remark from her for the first time.
“If I had gone down to handle this, I might not have done it better than you. Don’t think too much about it. You did well enough.”
She slightly turned her face away, seeming a little embarrassed as if it was her first time praising someone.
Although it wasn’t a pleasant sound and was a little clumsy, Jiang Huaiyi could hear some sincerity in it.
She held Shen Wensi’s hand tightly. Her hand was very soft, like a soft piece of cotton gently clinging to Shen Wensi.
Her body stiffened as she met those wet eyes.
The hospital room was quiet. The air was filled with a fresh lemon scent. Jiang Huaiyi’s eyes were filled with tears again.
Shen Wensi’s gaze fell on her pale lips. The person in front of her was clearly extremely fragile, but that resilient aura completely permeated her.
For some reason, this mortal body’s heart started beating faster.
Jiang Huaiyi spoke, looking as if she was deeply moved. Shen Wensi could almost imagine her words of gratitude, sounding tentative and nervous.
Was she going to thank her? Or was she going to silently clean the house like before? Or was she going to thank her clumsily?
She couldn’t help but lean her ear closer.
Jiang Huaiyi clutched her hand tightly and asked, “Can you help me set up a monument for Xiao Zheng?”
The smile on Shen Wensi’s face stiffened. Her body retreated to the comfortable back of the chair.
She nodded with a smile and said a cold “Okay.”
She suddenly didn’t want to listen anymore. She stood up, holding Jiang Huaiyi’s cup, and walked out without looking back.
“I’ll go get you some water.”
Jiang Huaiyi looked at her empty hand. She was about to say thank you, but she was choked by her rapidly disappearing figure.
The corridor outside the hospital room was brightly lit and quiet. No one was walking by.
Shen Wensi was walking so fast that her chest was heaving. She leaned against the wall to rest for a moment.
She turned her head to look at Bai Wuchang (White Impermanence), who was standing obediently on the side.
At this moment, his eyes were darting left and right. He didn’t dare to look at his boss getting snubbed inside.
Shen Wensi glanced at him and put the cup in her hand behind her back.
She asked in a low voice, “Is everything handled?”
Bai Wuchang immediately composed himself and jumped in front of Shen Wensi, revealing a fawning smile: “Yes, yes, everything is settled.”
His eerie ghost face looked a little comical at this moment.
Shen Wensi lightly coughed and nodded.
Bai Wuchang glanced at Jiang Huaiyi lying in the hospital room, rubbed his hands, and said, “You see, should I bring up the ‘Divine Doctor of Apricot Forest’ who recently came down to have a look at the one inside?”
Shen Wensi stopped her steps that were about to leave. She remembered Jiang Huaiyi’s appearance just now, let out a cold snort, and said with a fake smile, “You’re getting better and better at your job now.”
Bai Wuchang immediately fell silent and stood there obediently, tucking his entire head into his tall hat.
He tightened his grip on the “Soul-Snatching Chain” in his hand and said resolutely, “Don’t be angry, my lord. I’ll go and snatch her soul right now.”
With that, he was about to walk into the hospital room.
Shen Wensi’s hand clenched into a fist: “Come back.”
In Jiang Huaiyi’s current state, if she saw him, she would definitely die on the spot.
Bai Wuchang walked back with a smirk. His eerie ghost face looked comical no matter how she looked at it.
Footsteps sounded in the corridor. Shen Wensi glared at him.
Bai Wuchang consciously disappeared. When his soul body was too faint to be seen, a mother and daughter walked over.
Although they wanted to walk straight ahead without looking, when they passed by, the corner of their eyes still inadvertently glanced at Shen Wensi.
Shen Wensi’s face was cold. She stood up straight, completely without the angry look from just now, as if nothing had happened.
The two of them walked slowly. The daughter carefully supported the old lady to come out for rehabilitation.
Shen Wensi leaned against the wall to make way for the two of them. She heard them muttering.
The old lady: “Does this hospital also take in people with mental illnesses?”
The daughter: “Mom! Don’t talk nonsense. What if they hear you?”
The old lady: “I just saw her talking to a white coat stand. What a pity for such a young girl to be like this…”
The daughter: “Mom…”
The two of them turned their heads to look at Shen Wensi, who was still standing there. As if they had thought of something terrifying, the old lady, who was walking shakily just now, suddenly started walking very fast.
Shen Wensi, who was mistaken for having a mental problem for talking to Bai Wuchang, let out a cold laugh. She took a stumble and limped away.
Inside the hospital room, Jiang Huaiyi looked at the water dispenser in the corner and slowly lay back on the bed.
The fine silk cloth and the scroll were placed next to her. She picked up the fine silk cloth and looked at it.
The small words on it had disappeared. The mission was over.
Although it was said to be a life-saving method, it was no different from risking her own life.
If she wanted to live, she had to keep completing these tasks.
She leaned on the pillow, curled up into a ball, and felt that she was no longer as aimless as before.
Perhaps in this process, she had suffered, but more importantly, she felt a sense of relief after getting the result.
The scroll next to her was quietly placed there. The scroll was very long. She wondered how much effort Xiao Zheng had to put in to take it out of her body.
How much pain did it feel when the peach wood sword cut open her body?
She didn’t dare to think about it anymore. She put down the fine silk cloth. She stared at the empty doorway, no longer making any extra movements.
The hospital room was a private room. The facilities were very good. It looked like a VIP lounge.
Jiang Huaiyi had never stayed in such a room before. The hospital room had everything.
It felt no less luxurious than Shen Wensi’s villa, but the decor here was warmer.
The floor was made of solid wood. The wall paint was also warm. It was completely different from the green of a normal hospital outside.
The hospital room not only had a hospital bed but also a sofa and a huge LCD TV. The kitchen was in a small partition next to it.
Jiang Huaiyi casually picked up the peeled orange on the bedside table and ate it.
As the sweet and sour fruit entered her mouth, she looked at the clock on the wall. It was already twelve o’clock at midnight.
The lights outside went out with a “click.”
Looking out from the inside, it was pitch black outside. The silence was so profound that you could hear a pin drop.
Jiang Huaiyi had a bad feeling. The world that was normal just now suddenly became a little strange in her eyes.
She hurriedly and shakily stuffed the orange in her hand into her mouth. She quickly picked up the fine silk cloth and looked at it.
A line of small words appeared on the originally blank paper: “Communicate with the Yin world, know the Mandate of Heaven.”
There was nothing else besides that.
Jiang Huaiyi was a little confused. There was no time, location, or mission content on it.
It was completely different from the previous two prompts. Could it be that the mission hadn’t started yet?
She hurried to look for her phone, but there was only the scroll on the table, which was tucked in her hiking bag, with a corner sticking out.
She couldn’t reach anything farther away.
Jiang Huaiyi fumbled around the bed. Her movements became a little slow because of her injury.
The temperature in the room also dropped. The red ribbon on the air conditioner’s vent was fluttering, like a paper streamer waving at her.
She didn’t see the remote control. She only felt that the room was getting colder and colder, as if something extremely cold was covering her whole body.
Jiang Huaiyi’s hair stood on end. Looking at the IV needle in her hand, she could only grit her teeth and use her other hand to reach for the IV pole.
The pole was at the head of the bed. She barely managed to sit up, gasping for air. The cold air she inhaled made her throat sting.
She endured the discomfort in her body and tried her best to crawl to the foot of the bed where the pole was.
A crisp ringing sound suddenly rang out, echoing in the hospital room. It scared her so much that her hand almost slid off the blanket. It was a familiar, original ringtone.
It was her phone ringing.
Jiang Huaiyi slowly lowered her head. The ringtone was coming from under the bed.
She inexplicably felt a sense of relief. Her first thought was that her phone must have accidentally fallen under the bed at some point.
She took a breath and sat back on the hospital bed to rest.
Her palm was pressing on the white blanket, creating a deep indentation.
She planned to rest for a while before going down to get her phone.
After her breathing had calmed down, Jiang Huaiyi slowly crawled to the edge of the bed.
The phone kept ringing, showing no sign of stopping.
Her hand that was moving forward stopped. She didn’t have any alarms set on her phone.
A phone call wouldn’t ring for so long. She looked up at the clock on the wall. Two minutes had already passed.
The ringing under the bed was still going on. Her legs under the blanket also turned cold.
The feeling of being in an ice cellar made her stop reaching out. At this moment, she was at the edge of the bed.
She could clearly see a black hand with long, blue nails reaching out from under the light-colored floor.
“Why aren’t you picking up your phone?”
