After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 26
Chapter 26: The Figure of the Scroll
Jiang Huaiyi stood rooted to the spot in fear, her mind almost a blank. The person in the box didn’t move.
She just watched her quietly. The candle in her hand was completely unholdable and fell to the ground.
The candlelight fell and went out in an instant. That terrifying and eerie face also disappeared in an instant.
She first let out a sigh of relief. First, she couldn’t see that ghost face. Second, the person in the box was not Shen Wensi.
This finally allowed her to distinguish that this was fake and to deduce that the unlucky person who had entered the illusion just now was probably still her.
At the same time, after the relaxation came even greater fear. The feeling of unknown danger in the darkness quickly crawled all over her body.
Her whole body instantly broke out in goosebumps.
The paper man had never made a mistake in leading the way, but it brought her to such a place. So there were only two possibilities.
One was that the paper man itself had a problem, and the other was that she had tied the wrong hair.
Jiang Huaiyi felt that the latter possibility was minimal and that the former possibility was greater.
But Xiao Kui had no reason to harm her. She suddenly remembered that at the very end, the paper man’s movements were stiff, and there was that cold weight on her hand.
Her thoughts stopped there. She didn’t dare to think about what had squeezed her Xiao Kui out.
The most urgent task was to quickly see what the situation was in front of her.
She quickly crouched down, her hands fumbling in the direction where the candle had just fallen. Fortunately, after only a few touches, she felt something hot.
She flinched her hand, then felt back. It should be the head of the candle.
Fortunately, she didn’t poke her finger directly into the candle wick, or she would have definitely gotten a big blister.
Jiang Huaiyi quickly used her fingers to feel the bottom and picked up the candle.
She took out the lighter in her hand, but it didn’t light up after several tries. It was working fine just now, but now she didn’t know what was wrong with it.
She fumbled and took two steps back. She reached into her pocket and took out a box of matches wrapped in oil paper.
She tried to grab a match several times but failed. She took a deep breath and pinched the thin match between her fingers again.
She quickly struck a match and lit the candle.
In such a quiet environment, she heard the crackling sound of burning wood.
The faint light once again illuminated the surroundings. She let out a sigh of relief, then her heart leaped up again.
Jiang Huaiyi’s eyes widened. She bravely looked into the wooden box that had contained the person just now.
She saw an even more devastating scene. The “person” in the box was gone.
The wooden box that had been filled just now only had a puddle of viscous, dark brown liquid left inside.
The “person” was nowhere to be seen, and even the paper man that was next to her just now had disappeared.
Jiang Huaiyi instantly felt that the blood in her body was flowing backward. Her whole body had a very bad feeling.
She gasped for air, trying to adjust her breathing. She covered her mouth with her hand, not letting herself make a sound.
She didn’t dare to summon the paper man again. God knows what would appear again.
Jiang Huaiyi’s breathing calmed down. She knew that freezing here was not a solution. She took a deep breath and prepared to walk back. No matter what, she had to leave this place first.
A pale, cold hand, like one that had been dead for several days, suddenly stretched out from the darkness and quickly approached the fire.
Jiang Huaiyi only had time to see the long, sharp red nails on her hand before she pinched out the flickering flame of the candle.
With a click of her two fingers, the light in front of her quickly disappeared again.
Jiang Huaiyi’s breathing hitched. At the same time, a woman’s sharp laughter sounded in her ears. It was high-pitched and ethereal.
Her eyelids suddenly felt itchy. It felt like something hard was stroking them.
She immediately thought of the long, red nails of the ghost hand in the darkness just now. She had no doubt that those nails could effortlessly gouge out a person’s eyeballs.
She could even feel the pain of those nails stirring back and forth in her eye sockets.
Jiang Huaiyi’s nerves could no longer withstand any more provocation. The last pinch that put out the light almost severed her nerves along with it.
She screamed, clenched her hand in the “Five Thunder Seal,” and slapped around randomly as she ran.
She hadn’t run far before she felt like she had been tripped by something under her feet.
Before she could get up, she was hugged by something.
After struggling in the air for a couple of times, she seemed to be dragged for a distance.
An eerie ghost laugh came from her ears. Just as Jiang Huaiyi was about to resist fiercely, she found that her whole body seemed to be pressed down.
She felt the texture of a wooden board. The person behind her was pressing her down with all their might.
Jiang Huaiyi held her head up, not wanting to go down no matter what.
Was the ghost behind her trying to stuff her directly into the box?
She thought of the ghost’s appearance just now and felt a wave of nausea.
Just as they were in a stalemate, Jiang Huaiyi suddenly felt something warm touch her forehead.
Then that round thing, following her forehead, went straight up to the “Baihui” acupuncture point and lightly patted it.
She instantly felt as if the whole world had exploded like fireworks. She felt dizzy and lightheaded before returning to reality.
Everything around her brightened up again. At this moment, she was supporting herself on a wooden box with her hands, desperately trying to get inside.
In the box was the emaciated little boy with a green body, who was smiling at her.
If she hadn’t been held by a pair of arms, she would have probably been face to face with the child by now.
She was startled and quickly backed away. The person behind her also let go of their hands as she moved.
She turned her head and saw Shen Wensi sitting on the ground without any regard for her image. Her originally soft hair was messed up by someone.
Her fitting clothes were also a little disheveled. She was sitting there weakly, looking so fragile that she was about to break.
She no longer cared about being scared. She quickly went over to help her up from the ground and asked anxiously, “Who did this to you?”
As soon as the words came out, Shen Wensi gave her a resentful look. That look was full of speechlessness.
“Someone was possessed just now and desperately wanted to climb into the wooden box. I stopped her, and she even punched and kicked me.”
She said in a voice as weak as a thread, feeling like she would faint the next second.
Jiang Huaiyi, no matter how slow she was, finally realized that she was talking about what she had just done.
She had no idea what she had just done. It was possible for a person in an illusion within an illusion to be completely unaware of their actions.
Jiang Huaiyi was still a little at a loss. She nervously looked her over from head to toe. Seeing that other than her clothes being a little messy, there were no other external injuries, she felt relieved.
Seeing that she was weak but could still speak, her injury shouldn’t be too serious.
Jiang Huaiyi’s heart, which had just been tense, gradually turned back to fear. Just now, her blood had rushed to her head, and she almost thought she had become brave.
Now that she had completely calmed down, she felt her whole body was numb to her feet. Her heart was beating violently, as if it were about to jump out of her throat.
She tried to twist her stiff neck a few times to see what was going on in the box, but she couldn’t control her body.
Shen Wensi, seeing her struggling appearance, sighed and simply became a real-time visual communicator.
Her voice was soft. Usually, it would make people feel distant, but when she spoke in a low voice now, it was very gentle: “He’s still in the box, watching you.”
Jiang Huaiyi managed to squeeze out a smile. The look in her eyes was a little complex. She didn’t understand how she could say such a terrifying thing in such a gentle way.
If it were her at the New Min Villa, she would have definitely thought that Shen Wensi was deliberately trying to scare her and was against her.
But she rarely had this kind of mischievous streak. The expression on her beautiful face was also very calm, and even a little sincere.
Jiang Huaiyi could only stammer and say, “We’ve checked everything down here and found nothing unusual. Could the problem be with this child? He was also the one who pulled me into the water before.”
Shen Wensi nodded, a little surprised by her progress. According to how she was before, she would have long lost her ability to think at this time. She didn’t expect that even though she was scared, she could still temporarily keep her mind clear.
Of course, Shen Wensi didn’t know that she had already had a breakdown once, or she wouldn’t have tormented her like this.
Jiang Huaiyi’s hands were tightly holding hers. When she was very nervous, her palms wouldn’t sweat, but they would cramp.
She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to hold on for long before her hands started to cramp. Fortunately, Shen Wensi’s movements were fast.
She didn’t dare to turn around. It was Shen Wensi who turned her around.
“It doesn’t look dangerous. Don’t be afraid.”
Jiang Huaiyi nodded with difficulty. She saw that the child in the box was still there. Those all-black eyeballs, logically, should not be able to focus.
But Jiang Huaiyi could feel that he was indeed staring at her.
Shen Wensi asked, “Who are you?”
The child’s head tilted, looking at her. He didn’t speak, but he obviously could hear them talking.
She didn’t know why he wasn’t answering.
Jiang Huaiyi’s mind raced. Gathering her courage, she tried to ask in the local dialect, “Who are you?”
This time, the child seemed to understand. He sat up from the box, grinned, and revealed a dark, hollow mouth, smiling at the two of them.
Jiang Huaiyi quickly took a step back and was stopped by Shen Wensi.
Her calm and composed voice sounded: “He understands. Keep asking him.”
Jiang Huaiyi grabbed her hand and refused to let go this time: “Why did you grab me and pull me down here?”
The child tilted his head. The sparse hair on his head drooped to the other side.
The child’s immature voice sounded: “Sister, I’m so hungry. Please save us.”
Her voice was extremely eerie. Paired with that horrifying face, it instilled fear in anyone who looked at it.
Jiang Huaiyi was stunned. It was a little girl’s voice. She was wearing tattered clothes. Looking at her short, broken hair, for a moment, she couldn’t figure out her gender.
Jiang Huaiyi subconsciously took out a sandwich she had just put away from her pocket and handed it to the child in front of her.
Her hand was still trembling, but the sandwich was held steadily. She just held it in front of her, where the other person could reach it with just one hand.
The smile on the child’s face froze. Her expression became a little wooden. Then she raised her head again to look at Jiang Huaiyi.
She found that although the young girl in front of her still had a look of fear on her face, her eyes were very determined.
She also didn’t see the disgust that other outsiders had when they looked at her after breaking in.
She would tease all the people who broke in and then, after she was done, she would kill them without hesitation.
But this person was someone she had actively grabbed. She admitted that she was a little surprised at first to see how scared the other person was.
Even teasing her was less interesting. She preferred the kind of unyielding prey who would eventually kneel before her and beg for their lives.
Why was this girl able to treat her like this after she had a breakdown?
Shouldn’t she have punched and kicked her, just like her patriarchal parents before she died, just like all the people who had bullied her, and hated her?
The child in the box reached out and took the food.
The woman in front of her quickly retracted her hand. The look of fear on her face still had no expression of disgust.
She suddenly didn’t want this ghost-like appearance anymore. Perhaps if she returned to her appearance before she died, she would be able to see a different expression on her face.
She was a little curious. Just a little curious. Would she look at her the same way she looked at the person next to her?
The child in the box silently imitated the people in the cave and opened the transparent packaging.
Jiang Huaiyi seemed to have thought of something. Seeing that she was still a ghost, she would probably need incense to be able to eat.
She lit four small incense sticks and carefully inserted them into the sandwich.
The food in front of her instantly became sweet and fragrant. She hesitated for a moment and took a bite.
Her body, visibly, grew large patches of normal skin. In the blink of an eye, she turned into a normal little girl.
