After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 24
Chapter 24: How Tall Are You?
It was the little boy who had just disappeared. He was chasing the two of them.
Jiang Huaiyi felt a layer of cold sweat all over her body, and her palms were slick with sweat. She couldn’t muster any strength.
Just as that face was about to squeeze all the way in, she didn’t know if it was because the surrounding dirt was packed too tightly, but his facial features were distorted from the excessive force.
Shen Wensi noticed her unusual behavior. She only heard a gust of wind, and the figure appeared in front of her.
She lifted her leg and kicked that greenish face.
The cave was narrow and not easy to move around in. She simply sat down and turned her head to look at the stunned Jiang Huaiyi.
Her delicate eyebrows furrowed: “Why are you so scared?”
Jiang Huaiyi finally recovered and gasped for air. She was so scared that she almost had a heart attack. If she couldn’t catch her breath, she would definitely faint.
She felt that after these few experiences, she was doing much better than before. After all, she had fainted directly last time at the New Min Villa.
Just as she was about to defend herself, she saw Shen Wensi sigh and pat her shoulder.
“I’ll do it.”
She said, took the shovel from her hand, and started digging outside.
Only then did Jiang Huaiyi look down at the fine silk cloth in her hand. She found that the scroll that had just overlapped with them was now a little farther away.
The ghost’s face of the little boy just now appeared in her mind, and a strange association came to her.
The little boy was skinny and his body was in tatters. If he had anything else on him, she couldn’t have possibly not noticed.
After all, she had seen him more than once and knew exactly what he did or did not have.
The scroll was now stuck in place and wasn’t moving. Jiang Huaiyi shared her thoughts, and enduring her fear, she went to Shen Wensi’s side and started digging.
More than her fear, she wanted to leave this place quickly.
The two of them made quick progress. The black dirt piled up into small hills under the constantly swinging shovels, and the entrance was soon cleared.
Jiang Huaiyi turned her head to look at the people behind them. Their appearance hadn’t changed. She let out a sigh of relief and asked, “Should we go out together?”
They seemed not to have heard Jiang Huaiyi’s words and were still leaning in their original spots.
Shen Wensi looked at her calmly: “It seems that they died in this place. The ‘Magical Array’ has been activated. Don’t do anything useless. Let’s go.”
Jiang Huaiyi looked back and bent down to go out of the cave entrance.
Once outside, all the sounds and senses became clear.
Wails filled the air. The fire she had seen in the cave just now was actually the fire from the wooden boxes burning outside.
She figured that after the fire inside had burned, a tremor caused a spark to fly out and ignite the boxes next to it.
Fortunately, this wouldn’t cause any major disasters here, so the two of them didn’t bother with it.
It would most likely burn for a while and then go out on its own, as they weren’t connected to each other.
Shen Wensi looked to be in much better condition. She first brushed the dust off her body and surveyed the surroundings.
In reality, the air-raid shelter hadn’t changed at all. It was unscathed. It was just that some people had been knocked out below.
Jiang Huaiyi felt a little strange. She couldn’t figure out how the people below died inside if the bombing didn’t do anything to them.
The answer to this question came quickly. The oxygen inside was being consumed very fast. The fire was noticeably getting smaller.
When Jiang Huaiyi realized this, she started putting out the fire.
It seemed that when the bombing happened above, it caused the ventilation shaft below to collapse.
This air-raid shelter was not built very large or to a very high standard, so a situation like this could indeed happen.
The people inside seemed to be unaware of this problem.
The pungent and choking smell after the fire had also, to a certain extent, stimulated and numbed people’s nerves.
The danger signal was clearly right in front of them, but everyone was immersed in the sadness of their loved ones being unconscious and the confusion of the war outside, ignoring this important issue.
Jiang Huaiyi felt that if she were in the midst of the chaos decades ago, she might not have reacted so quickly.
These people had spent their lives looking for a safe place and longed for a stable life, but in the end, they were buried in this underground place with no light.
The sadness in her heart was palpable. She could no longer interfere with the life and death of these souls. She could only try to find a way out of the underground air-raid shelter.
Due to their unfamiliarity with the underground area, the two of them were a bit like headless flies at first, wandering around below, but fortunately, the space below was not very large.
Shen Wensi soon found a stone staircase. The tunnels below were a maze of connections, but there were only stairs going down, not up. It was likely that if they went up, they would see something.
The older generations said that this area was originally a small mound, but after the war, it was bombed into a pit and used as a pond.
The people below were most likely not dealt with.
Once the “Enchantment” started its next cycle, all the ghosts would come out.
It was hard to say whether they would still have their rationality then.
So they had to get out within these two hours.
Shen Wensi’s condition didn’t look very good. She was even walking behind Jiang Huaiyi.
She couldn’t help but wonder if she could carry her, as she was a head taller than her.
The two of them’s progress was blocked by a heavy iron door in front of them. The iron door shimmered with a cold light under the candlelight.
It looked like the one they had seen outside. There were two large locks on it. Jiang Huaiyi pushed it, and dust fell all over her.
She quickly moved away and started patting the dust off her body.
Shen Wensi frowned, covered her nose, and waved away the dust in front of her: “It looked broken from the outside. What’s going on?”
Jiang Huaiyi coughed heavily. It took a while for her to stop and explain: “The edge of the ‘Enchantment’ is relatively sturdy. Maybe this place is also the same as it was during the war. However, this place should be weaker than other places. We can pass through here later.”
If they weren’t pulled into the “Enchantment,” they wouldn’t have been able to get in from the outside. The two of them getting in was also a twist of fate.
One of the two things they had just thought of had been completed. Now they could go back and find the scroll to get out.
The two of them walked back. Shen Wensi looked like she was about to faint at any moment. Jiang Huaiyi just took her arm, put her on her shoulder, and with her other hand, she made a fist and wrapped her arm around her waist.
Her strength was not small, so helping her up was not difficult.
The two of them were walking down when Jiang Huaiyi suddenly heard the person next to her let out a low laugh.
Jiang Huaiyi’s heart tightened. She almost let go of her hand, thinking she was possessed by some ghost. She turned her head in a daze and found that Shen Wensi’s mouth was indeed curled up in a smile.
She asked with some confusion, “What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well? Why are you laughing?”
Shen Wensi put her hand on her shoulder: “It’s nothing. It’s just that no one has ever helped me like this before.”
Jiang Huaiyi pondered the meaning of her words and looked at her with a hint of sympathy. With her cold personality, she must have very few friends.
Just as she was about to comfort her, she heard Shen Wensi say, “This feels like a handy crutch.”
Jiang Huaiyi: ?…
Shen Wensi: “How tall are you?”
Jiang Huaiyi: ???…
