Chapter 27.1: No, An Alpha and An Omega Should Not Be Too Intimate.
8:55 a.m.
Wen Yue: Honey, I was so brave. Aren’t you going to praise me? My dad gave me a good scolding when I got home yesterday.
Wen Yue: For our love, I’ll do anything!
Wen Yue: Honey, remember to eat breakfast.
Shi Li was replying to Wen Yue’s messages while riding the elevator.
Shi Li: You’re the best. Kisses.
Shi Li: I’ve already eaten. You should remember to eat too.
It seemed that the twin kidnapping incident had been a significant shock to Wen Yue. Lately, she had been reporting everything she did to Shi Li and had asked Shi Li to do the same for her.
When she arrived at the design department on the twenty-third floor, Lin Xiaonan had just arrived and rushed out of the Group Three conference room to give Shi Li a big hug.
“Welcome back!”
Lin Xiaonan said the welcoming words, but her face showed a hint of exhaustion she couldn’t hide.
Shi Li hugged her back. “Thank you, Xiaonan. Is your child better now?” Lin Xiaonan’s child had been sick for over a week, and a few days ago, Shi Li had seen Lin Xiaonan post a video on the StarNet community of her taking her child for a shot late at night, with the caption: “I advise everyone to think carefully before having children…”
“She’s almost better. I can finally relax.” Lin Xiaonan pinched Shi Li’s cheek. “Eat more snacks during your tea break this morning to gain back the weight you lost!”
When facing her group members, Shi Li returned to being the cold, unapproachable Omega team leader.
She first checked on the work done last week. Two people had been obviously slacking, and their work was worse than what an AI could produce, so Shi Li gave them a firm reminder.
Approaching noon, the head of the design department called Shi Li to his office. The head handed Shi Li a document.
“Your visit to the mech research center last time was very productive. All the ideas you wrote were good, especially yours, which showed very deep thinking. The opportunity to visit was actually because the Federal government wanted to explore military-civilian collaboration to see if we could apply some of the excellent designs from private companies to the military mech field. Now the military has launched a cooperation and exchange training program, and you happen to have a relevant professional background. After careful consideration, we have decided to recommend you and the leader of Group Four to participate.”
Shi Li opened the document and flipped through it. Each page was stamped with a red “Confidential” stamp from the military.
“What about Group Two’s work…”
“The cooperation and exchange training program is on weekends, so it won’t interfere with your normal work. For your weekend work, we will compensate you with four times your normal salary as holiday overtime pay.” The department head smiled. He had already read the document carefully and flipped to the last page, which specified the schedule of the training program.
It would be every Saturday and Sunday from nine in the morning to twelve noon and from three in the afternoon to six in the evening, for one continuous month.
Shi Li raised her eyebrows. If she participated, she would be a workhorse without a weekend for an entire month.
But this meant she couldn’t spend her weekends on dates with Wen Yue anymore.
Zhu Yunqi had paid her so much money. She didn’t know if Zhu Yunqi would be angry at her work attitude of not wanting to work on weekends.
“Thank you for the opportunity, Department Head. Can I think about it and give you a response by the end of the day?”
The department head readily agreed.
In the pantry, Shi Li called Zhu Yunqi’s light brain communication account.
“Hello? Are you feeling unwell?” Zhu Yunqi’s cool voice came through. The end of her words carried a soft, fuzzy tone that made Shi Li’s ears tingle.
“No, I’m fine.” Shi Li quickly said, “I have something I want to talk to you about. Is it a good time to talk?”
“It’s a good time.”
Shi Li told Zhu Yunqi what the department head had said.
Finally, she asked for her opinion: “I know my request is a bit much and might hinder my progress with Wen Yue. If you’re not okay with it, I can just not go.”
She didn’t even realize the hint of flattery in her tone.
There was a pause on the other end. Then she heard Zhu Yunqi’s breathing suddenly deepen, and in the next second, it returned to silence. Zhu Yunqi seemed to have gotten up from her chair.
“Go ahead. This is your main job. You don’t have to ask me, a weekend is your own time.”
There was another three-second pause.
Shi Li had a feeling Zhu Yunqi had more to say, so she didn’t speak, waiting quietly for her to continue.
Three seconds later, Zhu Yunqi said an uncertain “Uh,” and then asked, “Am I putting too much pressure on you? Or, did I do something that made you think I’m the kind of person who squeezes every last drop out of others, even on weekends?”
“No, no!” Shi Li immediately denied it. Zhu Yunqi was definitely not that kind of person!
It was mainly because the billion dollars was too much, and it was hard for her not to put pressure on herself.
“You haven’t put any pressure on me. And you’re a very, very good…”
The word “person” was about to come out, but Shi Li suddenly realized that this would sound too intimate.
So she quickly changed it to “client.”
“And you’re a very, very good client.”
Fearing that she hadn’t been clear enough, Shi Li added, “You’re the best client I’ve ever had.”
Zhu Yunqi’s voice suddenly rose.
She seemed to let out a light laugh.
“You’re the best client I’ve ever had, too.”
After ending the call, Shi Li went to get herself a cup of lemon water. Just talking to Zhu Yunqi for a short while had made her feel thirsty.
Lin Xiaonan walked in, looked at Shi Li, and exclaimed, “Little Shi is on the phone with her girlfriend in the pantry! What was so inappropriate that her ears are all red?”
Then she leaned closer, with a look that said, “I understand.” “You’re just recovering from a serious illness, so it’s fine if you leave a little early this afternoon. Just make sure to use protection, Omegas get pregnant so easily. You don’t want to have a child when you’re not ready.”
Shi Li quickly stuffed a candied lemon slice into Lin Xiaonan’s mouth.
“That’s not it. It’s just my friend. I swear.”
Lin Xiaonan mumbled with the lemon slice in her mouth, “Then why are your ears…?”
“The sun. Xiaonan, I’m going back to work now.”
Shi Li couldn’t stay any longer. She picked up her lemon water and walked away. She touched her ears as she walked, and they did feel a little hot.
Maybe the call volume was just too high.
At noon, Tang Yingchi came to have lunch with Shi Li.
She also worked in an office building nearby, but it wasn’t the Star Corporation. She was a planner at another advertising company.
Tang Yingchi told Shi Li interesting stories from her travels, and when she got to a couple who had a fight, she abruptly changed the subject to Shi Li and Wen Yue.
“Honestly, I think Wen Yue is not mentally stable right now. You two should break up. I have several Alpha colleagues who are pretty nice. They’re all single, both male and female. There are even a few who just graduated. If you like any of them, I can set you up. With a face like yours, you’d have them wrapped around your finger in a second.”
Recalling Wen Yue’s outburst in the hospital that day, Tang Yingchi thought she would be the type to be violent after marriage.
“Wen Yue and I are doing well,” Shi Li said vaguely.
“What do you mean, ‘well’? I just don’t like her. It’s like the whole world owes her money.” Tang Yingchi shook her head in disappointment. “I know you’re allergic to Alphas, but maybe if you get to know them, you’ll become desensitized. Betas don’t have pheromones. For the sake of your own health, you should find an Alpha who can mark you. What’s the difference between an Omega marrying a Beta and a widow?”
“I’m not just allergic to Alphas. Besides, even if I didn’t have my own reasons, my mom wouldn’t let me marry an Alpha. She was cheated on by an Alpha, and that’s why she’s like this now. If I married an Alpha, she would really go crazy.”
The image of Shi Yu collapsing when she just suspected that Shi Li was marked by an Alpha was still fresh in her mind.
“Sigh, that’s a good point, too.” Tang Yingchi scratched her head, worried about her friend’s love life. “It just hit me. That beautiful Alpha you saw at the hospital last time, you two would look so good together! Oh, you still haven’t told me where you met her. I searched on the StarNet but couldn’t find her. Why isn’t she a celebrity? If she debuted, she’d be a sensation across the Federation. If you two got together and started a celebrity couple account, you’d earn a fortune.”
Shi Li considered her answer carefully. “She’s just my client from work.”
Tang Yingchi wouldn’t mind a little white lie, would she?
“Oh, from the company.” When work was mentioned, Tang Yingchi immediately lost interest. “Now that you’re going to be busy on weekends, who am I going to hang out with?”
“I’m sorry. When this is over, I promise I’ll spend more time with you.”
Shi Li put her hands on her chest and made a heart shape for Tang Yingchi.
“Chi Chi, there’s something I wanted to ask for your opinion on.” This question had been bothering Shi Li for a long time. “What do you do when someone helps you a lot, like saves your life, but they’re also very rich and don’t lack anything? How should I repay them?”
Tang Yingchi spread her hands. “Rich people? Then you don’t have to give them anything expensive, you don’t have money anyway. See if they have any emotional needs or if there’s something they want that money can’t buy, and try to give them that. But, if a rich person can’t solve their own problem, we probably can’t either. You could offer yourself to them.”
Shi Li feigned anger: “I’m serious!”
Tang Yingchi chuckled, “Actually, I don’t know either!”
The topic ended there. But Shi Li took Tang Yingchi’s words to heart. What Zhu Yunqi wanted most right now, and what money couldn’t buy, was probably the cancellation of the engagement.
She had to work harder and keep up the momentum!
Shi Li immediately ordered a bunch of couple-related items on the StarNet. She even wondered if she should give Wen Yue another fireworks show.
After lunch, the two of them were ready to go back to their respective companies for a rest. Before leaving, Shi Li noticed that in the time it took to eat lunch, Wen Yue had sent her dozens of messages.
Wen Yue: Honey, what did you eat for lunch? [Show me][Show me]
Wen Yue: I’m eating at the Combat Department cafeteria again. I’m so tired of it.
Wen Yue: Honey, are you having a tea break this afternoon? I’ll order something for your group.
Wen Yue: Honey, why aren’t you replying to my messages? What are you doing right now?
Shi Li found this version of Wen Yue a little strange. Wen Yue had never been so curious about her personal life before. Now she was suddenly overly curious, and it made Shi Li feel very uncomfortable.
She took a picture of the leftovers on the table and sent it to Wen Yue, saying she was having lunch with Tang Yingchi.
