Chapter 22: If I Say It Out Loud, It Will Be Considered Perverted.
After Shi Li woke up, the first person she saw was her familiar Dr. Ji. Dr. Ji stood with her hands in the pockets of her white coat, looking at her kindly, and motioned for her not to worry.
Dr. Ji said that Shi Li’s injuries were mostly minor scrapes that could be healed with a special ointment. The only tricky part was her scent gland. She had been injected with a forbidden drug that could make an Omega go into heat quickly. Since her scent gland had been unstable lately, it amplified the effect of the drug, leading to a very intense heat cycle.
Fortunately, there were no Alphas present during the heat, otherwise no Alpha would have been able to resist an S-class Omega going into heat in front of them.
They had given Shi Li the most potent inhibitor. For the next two days, Shi Li would have occasional minor heat symptoms, but she would be fine after she got through these two days.
“But…” Dr. Ji didn’t finish her sentence. It seemed difficult for her to say the rest. A doctor from the next room called her away in time. Dr. Ji swallowed the rest of her words, affectionately touched Shi Li’s forehead, and said, “Everything will be fine. You should rest well first.”
Shi Li twisted her neck, which was a little stiff from lying down. She was lying on a bed in a private room. The room was designed in a warm beige color, which reduced the cold, dead feeling of a hospital. All the furnishings in the room had “Capital General Hospital” labels on them.
The scent gland on the back of her neck ached with a dull pain. A transparent tube was inserted into her arm, and her body smelled of disinfectant. The events of last night flashed before her eyes. When she recalled herself talking in a soft voice, clinging to Zhu Yunqi, her hands restlessly moving all over her body, and crying and begging for a mark… Shi Li wanted to die.
Could they ever see each other normally after this?
She closed her eyes, forcing herself to stop thinking about the embarrassing scene.
The door opened from the outside, and a young girl with a ponytail rushed in like the wind. She immediately began to cry by the bedside. “Li Bao! How could you not tell me about something so big happening to you!”
The girl was Tang Yingchi, Shi Li’s good friend from high school. She was a Beta who had been traveling in the Middle Star Region last month.
Shi Li said hoarsely, “You were traveling. Besides, it was so sudden, and I just woke up… How did you know?” She remembered that Tang Yingchi’s trip was planned to be a whole month long. She shouldn’t have been back so quickly.
Tang Yingchi gnashed her teeth and hammered the bedside table. “You don’t have any relatives in Z3291, and your mom can’t take care of you in her condition… Forget about Auntie—who else? Wen Yue. She called me back in a panic.”
Hearing this, Shi Li lowered her eyes. She thought she understood why Wen Yue had called Tang Yingchi. Because Wen Yue had to consider what others thought and couldn’t always be at the hospital to take care of her. Rescuing her like she did yesterday was already going above and beyond. Wen Yue probably didn’t even know how she was going to explain it to Wen Lirong when she got back.
Tang Yingchi got angry as soon as Wen Yue was mentioned.
“She said she would take care of you, and this is how she takes care of you? Shi Li, I’m telling you, you’re lying on this bed today because of her and her dad. Otherwise, you have no grudge against that group of robbers. Why would they target a poor female white-collar worker like you who hasn’t even paid off her debt? They just wanted to kidnap Wen Yue and extort her rich and powerful dad. They just took you along for the ride.”
“Break up! You must break up with her!”
From Tang Yingchi’s words, Shi Li got a key piece of information: Wen Yue had told everyone that the people from yesterday were just robbers. This was likely the Combat Department’s doing. She had inferred from Zhu Yunqi and Lan Yang’s reactions that they were absolutely not ordinary robbers. The Federation has very strict weapon control, and ordinary robbers couldn’t have so many non-controlled weapons. They were likely terrorists or something.
However, turning a big problem into a small one and a small problem into nothing was a common method used by the Federation. So Shi Li also went along with the Combat Department’s narrative and told Tang Yingchi they were robbers.
Tang Yingchi cried with indignation for a while and then said to Shi Li, “Li Bao, I actually went to see your mom at the sanatorium during my trip to the Middle Star Region.”
Shi Li’s spirits immediately lifted. “How is she?”
“She’s the same. She didn’t recognize me. When I got there, she was playing soccer with a group of middle-aged and elderly people. Her legs were so fast, whoosh, whoosh, she ran really quickly.”
It’s a prosthetic leg worth 1.2 million, of course it runs fast. Shi Li thought to herself.
Tang Yingchi patted her soothingly. “Auntie is doing well, and I’m doing well, so now you should be doing well too. I’m here. You don’t have to be afraid of anything. Just rest. Did you ask for time off from work? If not, I’ll talk to Sister Xiaonan and have her ask for a few days off for you.”
“It’s okay, I’ll talk to Sister Xiaonan myself.” Shi Li sent a message to Lin Xiaonan, asking her to ask for time off for her. She also sent a leave request to the vice-director of the design department.
Tang Yingchi held Shi Li’s cold hand. “Do you want something to eat? I’ll go buy you some.”
Shi Li hadn’t been hungry, but after hearing that, her stomach immediately rumbled. Her mouth felt bland, and she did want to eat something tasty.
“I want shrimp congee with a little sweet and spicy pickled radish.”
“Okay. You lie here and wait for me.”
Tang Yingchi tucked Shi Li’s blanket in, raised the bed to a half-sitting position, and put a pillow behind her. Shi Li was in a private room. Dr. Ji had gone to do some work after recording her data. Tang Yingchi was afraid Shi Li would be scared alone, so she trotted out.
Half a minute later, she trotted back in.
“Li Bao, a friend is here to see you.”
Zhu Yunqi walked in behind Tang Yingchi. Zhu Yunqi was wearing a dark gray high-neck sweater today, with a pair of wide-leg skirt pants of the same color and soft-soled leather shoes that made no sound as she walked.
She was holding a pink cat-shaped thermos.
The moment their eyes met, Shi Li was the first to look away, pretending to look at the white clouds floating outside the window. How could Zhu Yunqi be here now? She wasn’t ready to face her.
Zhu Yunqi, on the other hand, was completely natural, as if the pheromones that had intertwined between them yesterday were just a dream of Shi Li’s. She placed the thermos on the bedside table and pulled up a chair to sit on.
Tang Yingchi was a natural at making conversation. “What delicious food did you bring for Li Bao? I hope it’s shrimp congee, so I don’t have to go out and buy it—when did you two meet? Li Bao rarely talks to Alphas. I’ve only been traveling for a short time, and she’s already made an Alpha friend.”
Zhu Yunqi replied, “Recently.”
Tang Yingchi opened the thermos and exclaimed in surprise. “Wow, it’s really shrimp congee. And there’s sweet and spicy pickled radish! If you hadn’t just woken up, I would have thought you told your beautiful friend beforehand.”
Shi Li was also curious as to why Zhu Yunqi knew her preferences so well. But she didn’t know what to say to Zhu Yunqi, so she just mumbled, “Mm.”
Zhu Yunqi sat and took a bowl. “I guessed. The congee shop I passed by happened to sell it.”
It was a response to Tang Yingchi’s words, but also an answer for Shi Li. She couldn’t very well say that her biological sister had done a background check on her and that she knew everything Shi Li liked and disliked.
If she said that out loud, she’d be considered a pervert.
Tang Yingchi filled a steaming bowl of congee. Shi Li sat up straight and tore open a mouthwash packet to gargle. She wanted to spit it out, but the trash can was a little far away. Her arm was connected to a tube, and she could only lean halfway off the bed. If she reached any further, it would pull on the needle.
Tang Yingchi put down the bowl and was about to get the trash can for her, but when she turned around, she found that Zhu Yunqi had already pulled the trash can over, holding it so Shi Li could spit into it.
“Be careful.” Her voice was low and soft, like a cloud filled with moist vapor that had just floated by in the sky.
Tang Yingchi saw her best friend’s eyes flickering uncomfortably. Shi Li lowered her head to spit out the mouthwash. Zhu Yunqi held the trash can with one hand and gently gathered the strands of hair hanging by Shi Li’s ear with the other, so they wouldn’t fall into the trash can.
After spitting out the mouthwash, Shi Li said in a low voice, “Thank you.” After a pause, she added, “Thank you for today and yesterday.”
Zhu Yunqi said, “It’s what I should do, both professionally and personally.”
Professionally, Shi Li was an innocent victim in the capture operation, and she had a responsibility to rescue her unharmed. Personally, she was Shi Li’s client, and it was stated in the initial contract that she would do her best to ensure Shi Li was not harmed.
As for whether there was another personal reason, Zhu Yunqi herself wasn’t sure.
Shi Li held the bowl and ate the congee in small bites. The needle was connected to her arm, and her skin was so thin it was almost transparent. It was as if she could see the medicine flowing into her veins drop by drop.
As she was eating, Tang Yingchi suddenly held her stomach. “Hold on, I think I have to go to the bathroom. Uh, Li Li’s beautiful friend, can you take care of Li Li for me? I’ll be back in fifteen minutes.”
She rushed to the bathroom in a hurry. The door closed, and Zhu Yunqi coughed. “Your friend is very energetic.”
There were only the two of them in the room now. Shi Li could no longer pretend to look out the window. It was strange; with Tang Yingchi gone, the atmosphere was less awkward than when Zhu Yunqi had first arrived.
“She’s always like this. She talks a lot, and she’s a very good person.”
After a moment of silence, Zhu Yunqi finally asked the question she was most concerned about. Shi Li did too.
“Are you okay?”
“Are you okay?”
They said it at the same time.
Shi Li pursed her lips and waited for a few seconds. Seeing that Zhu Yunqi didn’t intend to answer first, she said, “The doctor said I’m fine. What about you? Did you see a doctor?”
She remembered the wound on Zhu Yunqi’s shoulder. It had bled a lot, and a large part of her clothes was soaked with blood. The sweet, metallic taste of blood came to her tongue.
“It’s just a little scrape. It’s already fine.” Zhu Yunqi’s tone was light.
The injury was nothing to her. It didn’t require a doctor’s visit. They usually only saw a doctor for bullet wounds or fractures. Now, with advanced medical technology, there were special medicines for scars left by scrapes, so not a single scar would be left.
“Wen Yue said those people were robbers yesterday.” When she mentioned those people, Shi Li’s hand holding the bowl trembled. To prevent Zhu Yunqi from discovering the fear hidden in her heart, Shi Li looked up and smiled. “Do you mech repairmen also catch robbers?”
She had already guessed that Zhu Yunqi’s job was definitely not ordinary mech repair. Even though she hadn’t lived in the Black Star Belt, she knew that catching such vicious people would never be a job for ordinary mech repairmen.
And Zhu Yunqi had told her to be careful a few days in advance, which clearly meant she already knew something. At the bar, she had noticed the group of people who kidnapped her because they had an unpleasant scent about them, so Shi Li clearly remembered when they entered the bar. Lan Yang came not long after they did.
Thinking about it now, it wasn’t a coincidence. Lan Yang was already tracking that group of people. And even though Lan Yang was uninhibited and arrogant, she listened to Zhu Yunqi. It was highly likely that Zhu Yunqi was the person in charge of this capture operation.
Zhu Yunqi must have another identity, just as she had guessed. But because of confidentiality, she couldn’t say anything.
So she would just pretend that Zhu Yunqi was a mech repairman.
