After Secretly Marrying the Top Celebrity, I Fell in Love - Chapter 14
That night, Bai Yiyan suffered from insomnia.
She was clearly very tired and sleepy, yet her mind was highly active, her thoughts a jumbled mess that she couldn’t untangle.
It was already 3 AM, and Bai Yiyan still hadn’t fallen asleep, so she got up from bed, found some melatonin, and took a tablet with warm water.
Due to the melatonin, Bai Yiyan overslept and didn’t wake up the moment her alarm clock rang in the morning. Drowsily, she turned off the alarm. She intended to wake up properly and get out of bed, but instead, she vaguely drifted back to sleep.
After sleeping for an unknown duration, Bai Yiyan was woken up by a phone call.
Bai Yiyan stretched out her arm, reaching for her phone on the bedside table. She glanced at the caller ID; it was an unfamiliar number.
“Hello, good morning,” Bai Yiyan pressed the answer button and held the phone to her ear.
“Little Bai, it’s me.” A mature male voice, slightly magnetic and somewhat familiar, came from the other end of the line.
“Director Zhang?!” Bai Yiyan realized, her sleepiness instantly dissipating by more than half, and she sat up.
“Haha, yes, it’s me,” Zhang Mingxiu’s voice came through the receiver again.
“Director Zhang, your call is about…” Bai Yiyan politely inquired, but her opening words were interrupted by Zhang Mingxiu.
“Of course, it’s good news!” Zhang Mingxiu’s voice on the phone held a hint of excitement.
“Congratulations, Little Bai, you’ve successfully landed the role of the female lead number two in Nine Heavens.”
“…!” Bai Yiyan was stunned, the lively heart in her chest pounded wildly, nearly jumping out of her throat.
“Thank you, Director Zhang.”
“I’ll send you the electronic script first. As for the start date, I’ll let you know once it’s confirmed…”
After the brief call ended, Bai Yiyan held her phone in one hand, the other hanging limply by her side.
Her palms were unknowingly covered in cold sweat.
For a long time, Bai Yiyan couldn’t recover from this immense surprise.
Her beautiful phoenix eyes gradually became clouded with mist, the corners turning increasingly red, and a large, crystalline tear beaded on her long lashes.
After a moment, Bai Yiyan cried happily, her shoulders trembling slightly with uncontrollable sobs.
For the first time, Bai Yiyan experienced true joyful tears. It turned out that when a person reaches a certain level of happiness, they truly can’t help but cry.
Just as laughter doesn’t always signify happiness, crying doesn’t always interpret sadness.
Having cried enough, Bai Yiyan wiped her tears with her fingertip, thinking of telling Xu Xing the good news.
Since it was a weekday morning, Xu Xing was certainly busy. Therefore, Bai Yiyan sent her a simple and clear WeChat message explaining the matter.
Before this, even when she passed the initial audition, Bai Yiyan hadn’t mentioned it to Xu Xing, afraid it would end up being a false alarm. It wasn’t until she had passed the second round and the female lead number two role was confirmed for her that Bai Yiyan decided to share the good news with her friend.
She thought Xu Xing would be busy, but as soon as the message was sent, Xu Xing called her.
As soon as the call connected, Xu Xing offered congratulations repeatedly, simultaneously starting to sob quietly.
Bai Yiyan quickly turned to console her, and only then did Xu Xing gradually stop crying.
Xu Xing was on her way to the airport, so she seized the time to have a long phone chat with Bai Yiyan. They talked about recent company happenings and she didn’t forget to complain about a peculiar colleague.
Once Xu Xing started talking, she couldn’t stop. She was reluctant to hang up even while waiting to board, finally having no choice but to end the call when the boarding announcement for her flight echoed through the departure hall.
“I have to board now, so I’ll talk to you later. When I get back from my business trip, we must celebrate properly.” Xu Xing held the phone to her ear and glanced towards the boarding gate.
Bai Yiyan had put the phone on speaker, placing it on the vanity counter. She responded to the call while patting lotion onto her face.
“Okay.”
The phone call lasted for nearly an hour.
Bai Yiyan quickly tidied up, tying her long hair back in a tight ponytail. On her face, she wore nothing but the essential primer and sunscreen.
Looking at herself in the mirror, Bai Yiyan’s mind suddenly replayed the unbelievable scene from last night. Ye Manqing’s words to her still echoed in her ears.
“Little Bai, I want to marry you.”
“Yes, you heard me correctly.”
“Little Bai, will you marry me?”
Bai Yiyan lightly bit her lower lip, her face instantly flushed, the scorching heat spreading to her earlobes.
They weren’t in a romantic relationship, and they had only met a few times privately, so how did it suddenly fast-forward to marriage?!
Ye Manqing looked serious; she didn’t seem to be joking, and such a thing wouldn’t be something to joke about anyway.
Finally, Bai Yiyan uttered a sentence that even she found surprising.
“I need to consider it.”
Yes, Bai Yiyan did not refuse right away; instead, she said she needed to think.
To consider whether or not to marry Ye Manqing.
For lunch, Bai Yiyan cooked a bowl of noodles for herself, topped with a fried runny-yolk egg and two stalks of green Chinese cabbage.
A simple lunch was quickly finished.
After lunch, she took a nap. Upon waking, Bai Yiyan washed her face with cold water, quickly tidied up, and rode her small electric scooter out.
Night fell, and the bustling metropolis gradually grew quiet, with thousands of lights illuminating the homes.
On her way home, Bai Yiyan passed a bridal shop. Usually, Bai Yiyan wouldn’t pay much attention, just passing by. But today, Bai Yiyan stopped and stared at the mannequins in the window for a long time.
In the window, the groom mannequin wore a perfectly tailored black tailcoat, and the bride wore a sacred and beautiful wedding dress, holding a lovely bouquet.
“Marriage.” Bai Yiyan’s red lips moved slightly as she softly spoke the two words.
Twenty-year-old Bai Yiyan had never thought about marriage. After all, she hadn’t even been in a relationship, was used to living alone, and enjoyed her solitary life, never feeling lonely.
She hadn’t thought about marriage, but Bai Yiyan wasn’t opposed to it. However, the prospect of marriage wouldn’t typically be linked to Ye Manqing.
In terms of social status and family background, the two were worlds apart.
Ye Manqing was a top-tier celebrity, while Bai Yiyan was merely a minor extra. As for family background, Ye Manqing’s background was mysterious and non-trivial, whereas Bai Yiyan was an orphan who grew up in a welfare home, with no parents.
However, no one could resist Ye Manqing’s proposal. No one wouldn’t want to marry her, or rather, take her as a wife.
Regardless of Ye Manqing’s motive for wanting to marry her, there was nothing to gain from Bai Yiyan, not a single thing.
Was it for her face and figure?
In her years as an extra, many wealthy bosses had indeed tried to proposition her. Both men and women, who promised investment in exchange for sleeping with them, but Bai Yiyan had consistently refused them all.
So Bai Yiyan knew she was beautiful. But she felt that Ye Manqing was clearly more attractive than her, and Ye Manqing was taller and slimmer than her, not to mention her temperament.
Thus, Bai Yiyan couldn’t understand why Ye Manqing wanted to marry her.
Ye Manqing, this dazzling pearl, was now hers to possess entirely, should Bai Yiyan simply nod her head.
Bai Yiyan knew she didn’t love Ye Manqing, at least not yet. While there was no love, it didn’t mean she didn’t want to own this brilliant pearl, Ye Manqing.
Pulling out her phone, Bai Yiyan faced the window and dialed Ye Manqing’s number.
The phone rang only twice before it was answered.
A slightly cool voice came through the phone, like pearls dropping onto a jade plate, pleasant and melodious.
“Little Bai, have you considered it?”
“Mhm, I have considered it.” Bai Yiyan looked up at the window, gazing intently at the model bride for a long time.
“I agree to marry you.”
The other end of the phone suddenly fell silent. After two or three seconds, Ye Manqing’s voice finally came through, a simple, single word.
“Good.”
Under the soft moonlight, Ye Manqing stood in a white bathrobe in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. Her waist was slender like a willow in spring, and a head of dark hair cascaded over her back like clouds.
The woman’s narrow eyes, like those of a snow fox, narrowed slightly, revealing an uncontrollable look of delight.
Ye Manqing suddenly felt like having a drink. So she went to the home bar on the first floor and took a bottle of treasured white wine from the cabinet.
The woman placed the wine lightly on the bar counter, then turned to grab a corkscrew and a clean, crystal-clear stemmed glass.
With a “pop,” the cork was pulled out of the bottle.
Ye Manqing gently tilted her wrist, bringing the bottle neck close to the rim of the glass. A “gurgle, gurgle” sound filled the air as the amber liquid slowly flowed down the inner wall of the glass.
Ye Manqing was somewhat distracted, so much so that she didn’t notice the wine in the stemmed glass was overflowing.
In an instant, the rich, lingering aroma of the wine drifted into the air.
