- Chapter 2 - Love at First Sight
“The Marriage Alliance Is Accepted”
“With those words from you, I can rest easy. But do you really not plan on dating? I could make a sacrifice and introduce you to my very, very, very most beautiful best friend.”
Shang Keyu gazed out the window and said faintly, “No need.”
The moment those words left her mouth, the car body suddenly jolted and came to a stop in the middle of the road. The powerful inertia sent Shang Keyu lunging forward, nearly slamming her head into the seat.
She frowned. “What happened?”
Xiao Tang, in the driver’s seat, was instantly drenched in sweat. “B-Big Miss, the car seems to have broken down. I’ll go check it immediately.”
After circling the vehicle to inspect it, she reported that a tire had blown out and she would contact a nearby manufacturer for repairs right away.
“Don’t go to all that trouble.” Shang Keyu reached out and pushed the door open to exit the car. “I don’t want this car anymore.”
Xiao Tang’s eyes widened. “Big Miss, it’s just a flat tire.”
Shang Keyu said word by word, “I do not like anything that can deceive or betray me.” She then asked, “How much further to Sinus Amoris?”
“About ten kilometers.”
“I’ll make my own way there. You handle this car, then inform my assistant to investigate exactly who has touched this vehicle recently.”
Xiao Tang was stunned. “Handle it? How should I handle it?”
“Do you not understand?” Shang Keyu grew a bit impatient. “Make this car disappear from my sight forever. As for the specific method, do as you please.”
Xiao Tang blinked, and realization quickly dawned on her. When the Big Miss spoke like this, could it be interpreted as… the car was hers to deal with? Would it not matter if she just changed the tire and drove it away?
She suddenly understood why the previous driver had resigned with such a mysterious expression.
With a luxury car in hand, she was already halfway to financial freedom! Long live the Big Miss!
Nearly moved to tears, she immediately raised her hand in a salute. “Big Miss, which car would you like to take later?”
“Just pick one at random from the garage,” Shang Keyu said casually. “However, I hope you keep your previous hairstyle. A ponytail suits you better than a bun.”
Xiao Tang was slightly taken aback.
Shang Keyu took out her phone and sent a message. Surprisingly, before the call even disconnected, her childhood friend on the line said, “The car even got a flat tire; it seems Heaven doesn’t want you to go see that playgirl.”
“I don’t like breaking appointments.”
“Then how are you going to get there? …Wait, you’re not planning to call that, are you?”
Shang Keyu smiled slightly. “Congratulations, you guessed right.”
Suddenly, a wild wind gusted across the elevated highway, and a roar approached. The traffic flow ahead and behind was briefly cut off as a black behemoth circled and drew near.
The steel body of the helicopter blocked out the sun. Xiao Tang looked up from within the massive shadow, seeing the character “Shang” painted on the fuselage. She couldn’t help but swallow hard, looking back at her boss—the new power-holder of the Shen Group.
Shang Keyu stood tall, her long hair flying backward in the gale caused by the rotors. The lines of her profile were sharp and commanding, and her pitch-black eyes were like ink that refused to thin.
She took the aviation headset handed to her and boarded the helicopter.
Inside a private box at the Sinus Amoris restaurant, Ji Songshu leaned against the table with her chin in her hand. Her eyelids drooped as she faintly heard a roar, as if something were approaching the building.
It’s probably not Godzilla, Ji Songshu thought as she stifled a slow yawn.
She had been waiting here for half an hour, and wearing ill-fitting clothes made her feel truly miserable.
The dress Pei Jiyue had given her was a white spaghetti-strap dress. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t her size; the chest was too tight, and she had barely managed to squeeze into it.
After looking in the mirror, she felt embarrassed that a large portion of her snow-white chest was exposed, so she threw on a high school uniform jacket over it.
Bored to death, Ji Songshu checked the time. It was three minutes until eleven o’clock, yet neither Pei Jiyue nor the legendary Miss Shang had appeared.
Was this some new trick of Pei Jiyue’s to prank her? Surely a person shaped like a stone bollard wasn’t about to show up for a blind date!
While she was lost in thought, a waiter walked up to her and bowed respectfully.
“I am sorry, Miss. Miss Shang was delayed by something on the road and may arrive a little late. Please wait a few minutes; we will serve some desserts and tea for you first.”
“Could I have a few extra servings of molten souffle? Charge it to Pei Jiyue’s account. I’d like to take them to go in a bit.”
“Certainly.”
Ji Songshu cheered inwardly and immediately pulled out her phone to message her younger sister.
As she was typing, a text message suddenly popped up.
Dear Ms. Ji Songshu, your physical examination is scheduled for 11:30 on [Date]. Please arrive on time…
Oh no, she had forgotten about the check-up.
There wasn’t much time to get there now, but the souffle hadn’t arrived yet. Just as Ji Songshu was about to hurry the staff, she looked up and a cup of flower tea was poured directly onto her.
“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, Miss Pei!” The waiter who had knocked over the tea hurriedly handed her some napkins.
Ji Songshu’s face was splashed; water dripped from her face and jacket, and some had even splashed into her eyes. It mixed with her colored contact lenses, making her eyes sting painfully and water uncontrollably.
“It’s alright.” She stood up, covering her eyes. “Where is the restroom? I’ll go take care of this.”
“Go out the door, turn left, and walk to the end.”
“Thank you.”
The jacket was wet and clung to her skin unbearably. Ji Songshu took off the jacket and removed her contacts. The world instantly became a blur. She leaned forward until her nose almost touched the mirror just to see her own face.
The red spots on her face had faded at some point; her skin was white and delicate, and her eyes were a crystalline blue.
Something was wrong with the contacts, so she couldn’t wear them for now. She would have to go home first before heading to the hospital.
Relying on her severe nearsightedness, Ji Songshu struggled to navigate the path. Along the way, she bumped into eight waiters delivering food and said “sorry” nine times—the extra one was for mistaking a pillar for a person.
Finally making it back to the box, she picked up the souffle and headed out.
Just as she was about to reach the entrance, two waiters happened to be pulling open the restaurant’s grand doors from either side.
The heavy, carved wooden doors opened slowly, like the tolling of an ancient bell. Light flooded in, making everything around her feel distant and silent.
It was so quiet that no one spoke; everyone held their breath as if waiting for something. Then, she heard the sound of footsteps.
In her blurred vision, she could faintly see a person walking toward her from within the white light.
As the figure drew closer, she realized she was standing directly in the person’s path. She hurriedly moved aside to avoid a collision, but the person happened to move in her direction anyway. Ji Songshu turned her body, but she still accidentally brushed against the person.
As they passed skin-to-skin, she caught a faint scent, like red wine—a blend of mellow alcohol and the sweet fragrance of black cherries. it was intoxicating.
Suddenly, her ear felt a bit lighter, but she didn’t pay it any mind and simply continued walking out.
Shang Keyu stopped in her tracks. She stared at the feather earring resting in her palm, momentarily stunned. She clenched her hand shut, her gaze following that retreating figure.
The white hem of the dress fluttered, dark long hair swayed behind her, and those blue eyes…
“Miss Shang, welcome to our establishment.” The restaurant manager came out to greet her, bowing diligently. “Miss Pei is already in the private box. This way, please.”
Shang Keyu acted as if she hadn’t heard, only asking, “Who was that girl who just left?”
“Apologies, I did not see that guest’s face. Could you please describe her attire?”
“A white dress, dream-like blue eyes, wearing a pair of feather earrings…” Shang Keyu murmured. “If you had seen her, you wouldn’t be able to forget.”
“I am sorry, Miss Shang, I have no recollection of seeing such a guest.”
“Then check the surveillance.” Shang Keyu’s tone left no room for doubt. She opened her palm to show the feather earring. “That lady dropped her earring just now. It should be returned to her; that is the level of service this restaurant should have.”
The manager reached out to take it but waited in vain for the earring to be dropped into his hand. He immediately understood: Miss Shang intended to return it personally.
At Jikang Hospital, Ji Songshu had already changed out of the dress into a loose shirt and completed her final physical exam items.
She familiarized herself with the route and turned a corner toward the inpatient building.
In a VIP ward on the top floor, a sixteen-year-old girl lay against the headboard of her bed, holding a copy of Notes on the Cracks of Illness. Her lips were colorless, and an IV was inserted into her arm.
“Xiao Xi, I’ve come to see you.” Ji Songshu lifted the dessert bag in her hand.
Ji Chaoxi looked up, her face full of pleasant surprise. “Sister, why are you here?”
“I came for a check-up.”
“But didn’t Dr. Shen say that you gave blood to an emergency patient recently and couldn’t have any more drawn?”
“Today was just a routine check-up.” Ji Songshu smiled, then lowered her voice. “Xiao Xi, don’t tell Dr. Shen.”
“Okay.” Ji Chaoxi pouted. “But Sister, you have to listen to the doctor.”
“I should be the one saying that.” Ji Songshu took her sister’s hand. “You have surgery in a week. Are you ready?”
Ji Chaoxi lowered her head and said softly, “Sister, the success rate of the surgery is only 30%. If—I’m just saying if—I said I didn’t want the surgery, would you agree?”
“Let’s leave the Pei family together. I know you only stay there for my sake. All these years, they…”
“Don’t say another word!” Ji Songshu stood up abruptly, staring intensely at her sister. “I will not give up even a sliver of a chance for you to stand up again.”
“Sister…” Tears welled up in Ji Chaoxi’s eyes.
She wished so much that she wasn’t a burden who couldn’t even stand.
“I’m sorry, Xiao Xi. I shouldn’t have been so harsh.” Ji Songshu rubbed her sister’s head, her voice low. “You are my only family.”
Her greatest wish in life was for her sister to recover and be discharged, so they could buy a small house and live happily together.
But the doctor said that if the condition worsened further, Xiao Xi would have to undergo an amputation.
Seeing her sister’s dejected expression, Ji Chaoxi hurriedly wiped away her tears. She didn’t want their meeting to be filled with crying.
She looked at Ji Songshu and suddenly noticed something different. “Sister, where is your earring?”
“It’s on my ear—” Ji Songshu reached for her ear and suddenly froze.
It was there this morning! That was something her mother had left behind!
She stood up hurriedly. “I’m sorry, Xiao Xi, the earring might have fallen off on the way here. I’m going to look for it. I have to go, I’ll see you in a few days.”
Ji Chaoxi nodded obediently.
The time was nearing dusk. Walking out of the hospital gates, the orange-red sunset dyed the entire sky. Ji Songshu slapped her own cheeks and took several deep breaths to suppress her emotions.
She was about to follow the navigation back the way she came to find the earring when her screen was suddenly crowded with dozens of calls the moment she turned off “Do Not Disturb.” They were all from Pei Jiyue.
Was she coming to demand an explanation? Ji Songshu hesitated for a moment but answered the phone.
“Hello.”
“So you finally know how to pick up. Where are you?”
“The hospital. What’s the matter?”
“I came specifically to tell you some good news.”
“You passed your quiz?” Ji Songshu threw out a casual barb.
Pei Jiyue huffed twice, then said in a triumphant tone, “Shang Keyu has agreed to the marriage alliance.”
“Weren’t you two supposed to get married anyway?” Ji Songshu asked, puzzled.
“Er…” Pei Jiyue coughed heavily. “Anyway, Shang Keyu and my parents are coming to the house tomorrow around four or five in the afternoon to discuss our marriage. Remember to be there.”
“Got it.”
The call ended, and Pei Jiyue tossed her phone aside. She lay flat on the bed at the beauty salon, swinging her feet and picking a cherry from a fruit plate to munch on.
“Miss, do we still need to go to the Sinus Amoris restaurant?” her assistant asked cautiously.
“Shang Keyu has already agreed to the engagement, why go?” Pei Jiyue gave a long, slow yawn. The morning skin treatment had been so comfortable she had slept until now.
She picked up a mirror and carefully examined her own face, unable to help but praise herself: “I truly am endlessly charming; I can catch someone without even being there.”
