- Chapter 19 - So Cute
A Damp and Sticky Feeling
“I’ll give my bed to you.”
Ji Songshu gave a shy smile and began walking toward the room.
“Miss Pei.” A voice called out to her.
The guest room door opened, and Carlotta stood at the threshold. She walked over to Ji Songshu and guided her with impeccable etiquette. “Miss Pei, your room has been prepared for you.”
“Who is Miss Pei?” Ji Songshu muttered, her eyes still fixed on Shang Keyu with a lingering, sticky gaze.
Shang Keyu sighed. “How can you not even remember your own surname?”
She led Ji Songshu into the guest room, signaled for Carlotta to leave with a glance, and then had Ji Songshu sit on the bed. Standing before her, she pressed down on the girl’s shoulders and asked softly:
“Do you still remember who I am?”
Ji Songshu answered cheerfully, though her tongue felt heavy and thick: “You are Sang… Sang!”
“Sang Sang?” Shang Keyu was somewhat surprised. Just as she was about to ask more, Ji Songshu’s body went limp; she collapsed onto the quilt and lost consciousness.
Shang Keyu didn’t leave immediately. She stood there, her eyes tracing every detail of Ji Songshu’s tranquil and soft face.
The room was so quiet that the only sound was the steady, faint breathing of the sleeping girl.
Suddenly, an abrupt and sarcastic voice rose in the depths of Shang Keyu’s heart:
“Truly worthy of someone who has had seven ex-girlfriends.”
She slowly recalled those explosive anecdotes.
Writing a 30,000-word essay for an ex-girlfriend and reading it aloud in front of the entire school…
If it were her, and breaking up once could make this idiot write a 30,000-word essay, she would want to tease her too.
To get back together, she signed up for a “Love Master Class” and was scammed out of 200,000 yuan…
It didn’t look like she had learned a single thing.
Getting scammed through online dating… perhaps she could try that herself.
As for the most ridiculous one—getting caught cheating and claiming to have a split personality…
Thinking back to the other name the girl had blurted out during her self-introduction, a bizarre suspicion crossed Shang Keyu’s mind: Could it be that the split personality is actually real?
Shang Keyu shook her head. She must be too tired to be having such thoughts, so she quickly left the room.
Perhaps because the quality of the bedding was much better than what she had at home, Ji Songshu slept very deeply, as if sinking to the bottom of a vast ocean.
When dinner time arrived, Shang Keyu came to call her, but seeing her curled up tightly in the quilt and sleeping soundly, she couldn’t bear to wake her.
By the time Ji Songshu finally woke up, it was already two in the morning.
She opened her eyes dazed, only to find that she couldn’t see anything clearly; everything looked as if it were behind a pane of frosted glass.
Someone had helped her remove her contact lenses. She fumbled through her bag, found her glasses, and put them on.
Through the thick, “beer-bottle-bottom” lenses, she stared wide-eyed at the crystal chandelier on the ceiling, then stretched her limbs as far as they could go, splaying out like the Chinese character “big”.
Memories of her drunken behavior came rushing back in a flood.
Her expression instantly twisted into something resembling The Scream.
Heavens! What had she done?
What was that about “warming the bed”? Was she a hot water bottle? Why did she suggest going to Shang Keyu’s room? Why didn’t she just occupy this huge bed by herself instead of trying to squeeze in with someone else? Was she insane?!
Don’t automatically play the role of an Omega heroine from a novel when you’re drunk!!! she screamed at herself internally.
No matter how you differentiate, you’re still a Beta, though being an Alpha isn’t out of the question.
Wait, Shang Keyu had said she smelled like honey.
Ji Songshu thought blankly: Is that my pheromone? No, did I really differentiate without knowing it?
Also, in that state between dreaming and waking, she felt as if something had been biting and licking her—something damp.
A terrifying suspicion suddenly surfaced in her mind.
Could it be… could it be that Shang Keyu has already marked me?
Not daring to think deeper, she quickly pushed the thought out of her head.
“Gurgle—”
That sound was Ji Songshu’s stomach protesting.
She rummaged through her bag for a long time but couldn’t find a single snack. At this hour, Shang Keyu was likely asleep.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a note stuck to the headboard. She took it down; the handwriting was sharp and bold, saying:
“If you’re hungry, find Carlotta. She will prepare a late-night snack for you.”
In the middle of the night, Ji Songshu pushed the door open. The hallway was pitch black.
She felt along the wall for a long time without finding a light switch. She almost knocked over an antique vase of unknown vintage, which scared her so much she didn’t dare touch anything else. She fumbled her way down the stairs step by step in the dark.
In the silent space, the sound of her dragging slippers was exceptionally clear. Additionally, there was a rustling sound.
Ji Songshu stopped in her tracks. The sound quickly vanished, as if it were a hallucination. Clutching her chest to bolster her courage, she tentatively stepped forward until she finally reached the ground floor.
She entered the kitchen.
Moonlight poured in through the window frames, casting shadows across the floor. She saw a dark silhouette pressed right behind her own shadow.
Ji Songshu jumped back in fright, landing right on the light switch. With a click, the room brightened, and Carlotta was standing respectfully at the doorway.
“Miss Pei, would you like me to prepare some supper for you?”
She waved her hand and said, “No need, you should go back to sleep. I’ll just find something to fill my stomach.”
“You are the Eldest Miss’s guest; serving you is my duty.”
“Then… a bowl of egg fried rice, please.”
Watching Carlotta—a foreign face with a high nose bridge and deep eye sockets—tossing a wok to make egg fried rice gave Ji Songshu a subtle sense of displacement.
However, she couldn’t resist the aroma of eggs wafting from the pan. she tilted her nose up to sniff the air, feeling even more famished.
Soon, a fragrant bowl of egg fried rice was served.
“Thanks for the hard work, let’s eat together,” Ji Songshu said, holding her spoon.
Carlotta shook her head and simply stood aside with her hands folded.
Ji Songshu ate with great relish, browsing through the missed messages on her phone as she ate.
A news headline popped up: it reported a car losing control and crashing into a lake today.
The more Ji Songshu read, the more familiar it looked—this was exactly what had happened to her! She clicked in to read the details.
She hadn’t expected her first time in the news to be for something like this. She kept scrolling down; the location and the process of the accident were almost identical.
But when she reached the end, it said the injured person, a “Ms. Shen,” had been sent to the hospital and was currently unconscious.
Ms. Shen? Ji Songshu paused. Her surname wasn’t Shen. Maybe it was a pseudonym; they were quite protective of privacy.
Ji Songshu didn’t think too deeply about it. She was even relieved that the news didn’t say “Ms. Ji,” otherwise her clumsy lie about being named “Pei Jiyue, courtesy name Songshu” would have been exposed.
She scraped the last bits of rice and egg from the bowl with her spoon and handed the clean bowl back to Carlotta, asking casually:
“By the way, while I was sleeping, did anyone enter my room?”
“The Eldest Miss went in once to call you for dinner.”
“How long did she stay?”
“Eleven minutes and twenty-eight seconds.”
That long just to call someone for dinner? Ji Songshu’s heart skipped a beat. Was that damp, sticky feeling in her dream really Shang Keyu doing something to her?!
As she was constructing terrifying scenarios in her mind, she suddenly felt something furry brushing against her leg.
Her mind went blank. She looked under the table and immediately turned pale with fright. She abandoned her meal and fled, sprinting all the way upstairs, slamming her door shut, and diving onto the bed, wrapping herself in the quilt in one fluid motion.
She patted her chest, her heart still thumping with lingering fear.
A voice beside her asked: “What happened?”
“There’s a dog… a huge one, taller than my waist.” Ji Songshu covered her head with the quilt, but she could still hear the dog thumping against the door—thud, thud.
…Wait a minute. Why was there someone talking inside her quilt?
Turning her head, Ji Songshu locked eyes with a frustrated Shang Keyu, who had just had her quilt snatched away. She was wearing the same style of silk nightgown.
Shang Keyu: “That’s Qiqi, my dog.”
Ji Songshu’s face turned bright red instantly.
“Sorry, I was bitten by a dog when I was little, so I’m a bit afraid. I accidentally ran into your room. Can you help me chase it away?”
Shang Keyu got out of bed. Ji Songshu took the opportunity to reclaim the entire quilt, bundling herself up like a fortress.
She peeked out from the quilt with only two eyes, timidly observing.
Shang Keyu walked to the door and opened it. An Alaskan Malamute nuzzled its owner affectionately. Only then did Ji Songshu see what the dog looked like.
It had black and white fur, white “bean” eyebrows, and its left eye was closed—likely blind—with a jagged scar running across it. Its remaining right eye was blue and piercingly bright.
The next second, the dog turned its head and made eye contact with Ji Songshu. As if receiving a summons, it lunged forward, sprinting straight toward Ji Songshu. It leaped onto the bed and, before she could react, began frantically licking her face.
Ji Songshu felt she was suffocating. She wanted to scream, but she was afraid that if she opened her mouth, she would end up “French kissing” the dog.
Shang Keyu stood by, the corners of her mouth twitching into a smirk. “Qiqi is very obedient. If you call her name, she’ll listen.”
“Qiqi, let… let go of me…” Ji Songshu struggled.
The Alaskan Malamute continued its doggy business.
“You have to use her full name.”
“Huh?” Ji Songshu asked in a panic. “What’s her full name?”
“Alexievichi.”
Ji Songshu: “?”
She was stunned for two seconds, and Qiqi doubled her efforts.
That damp, hot sensation—Ji Songshu was certain now. While she was asleep, this dog must have attacked her then, too.
“Ale… Ale—AAAAHHH! Save… save me, Shang Keyu…”
“You didn’t seem to call me that a while ago. Think carefully.”
While enduring the Alaskan’s “harassment,” Ji Songshu yelled out a string of names: “I don’t know! Shang Keyu, Keyu, Keke, Yuyu—help me!”
Shang Keyu remained unmoved.
Suddenly, a spark of inspiration hit her. She shouted: “Sang Sang!”
Shang Keyu was greatly pleased. She beckoned to the dog. “Alexievichi, come here.”
The Alaskan Malamute obediently retreated from Ji Songshu and wagged its tail around its owner. Shang Keyu scratched the dog’s chin, cooed a few words, and led it out.
“Alright, I’ve kicked Qiqi out.”
Ji Songshu remained silent.
Shang Keyu pulled back the quilt to find Ji Songshu curled into a ball with her knees pulled up. Her glasses were crooked on the bridge of her nose, and her blue eyes were misty and damp.
She reached out to straighten the glasses for her.
“Pfft—Hahahaha!”
As if witnessing something incredibly humorous, Shang Keyu burst into a fit of laughter.
“What are you laughing at?” Ji Songshu was bewildered.
“What is your prescription?”
“Negative ten.” (1000 degrees)
Looking at Ji Songshu’s eyes, which were shrunk into tiny “bean eyes” by the thick beer-bottle lenses, Shang Keyu finally understood why she wore contact lenses.
Take them off: big, watery, beautiful eyes. Put them on: bean eyes. Take them off: big, watery, beautiful eyes. Put them on: bean eyes.
Shang Keyu couldn’t help it; she laughed until she was doubled over.
“Stop laughing! What’s so funny? I told you to stop!” Ji Songshu smacked Shang Keyu on the shoulder.
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop.” Shang Keyu raised her hands, though her face still bore an unrestrained grin.
Ji Songshu glared at Shang Keyu indignantly and leaned back. Suddenly, she noticed a Bagel Bunny plushie sitting at the head of the bed.
“This is so cute.”
“If you like it, I’ll give it to you. I find it in the way anyway; I only put it here because there was nowhere else to store it,” Shang Keyu said.
Ji Songshu smiled, revealing two rows of white teeth. She squeezed and turned the plushie around. Just as she flipped the toy over, she noticed a black thread behind its ear.
She froze for a moment, then turned to look at Shang Keyu:
“This is the one I held back at the hotel… You actually brought it back with you?”
