- Chapter 13 - Always Prepared
Are you finally going to wise up and fall in love?
To prevent the conversation from sliding in an uncontrollable direction, Ji Songshu took the initiative to speak: “I’m sorry, Dr. Shen. When I went to the hospital for my physical exam last time, I deliberately avoided you.”
Shen Weiyi let out a soft sigh. “If the nurses hadn’t told me, I almost would have been fooled by you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know your physical condition better than you do; doing this will affect your health. Tell me, when was the last time you had your period?”
Ji Songshu pursed her lips.
“Two months ago.”
Shen Weiyi let out a low sigh and said, “You must take care of your body. I’ll talk to your aunt about your situation; things can’t go on like this.”
“Thank you,” Ji Songshu said softly.
“Have you eaten dinner yet?”
Ji Songshu shook her head.
“Let’s have dinner together then.”
“Not an Italian restaurant,” Ji Songshu said hurriedly. She was afraid of running into Shang Keyu. If the three of them ended up staring at each other in awkward silence, she would want to find a hole in the ground to crawl into.
“Who gives Italian food to a patient?” Shen Weiyi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Let’s find a home-style restaurant. You need to eat something nutritious and nourish yourself properly.”
“Can we get it to go and take it to the hospital?” Ji Songshu tilted her head and said with utter sincerity, “I want to eat with Xiaoxi.”
“Of course.”
Half an hour later, in a VIP ward of Jikang Hospital.
A table board was set high across the hospital bed. On the surface, puzzle pieces of various shapes and sizes were piled up like a small mountain. Ji Chaoxi was buried in the task, busy as a bee.
Her movements almost never paused. With a single glance, she would pick out a piece and place it in the correct position, repeating the cycle.
This was not a difficult task for her. She was the kind of person who would write “It is easily observed” on a mathematics exam and then provide a miraculous yet flawless equation to complete the proof.
Only half an hour had passed, and the thousand-piece puzzle challenge was mostly complete. Van Gogh’s The Starry Night was finished, save for a crescent moon in the upper right corner.
As the final piece was pressed down, the entire image became whole, and the room seemed to brighten. The door to the ward opened, and Ji Songshu and Shen Weiyi walked in.
“Xiaoxi!”
Hearing her sister’s voice, Ji Chaoxi immediately looked up with a radiant smile. “Sister!”
Ji Songshu lifted the bags and gave them a little shake. “Extra meal time!”
Rather than the braised pork and old duck soup, Ji Chaoxi paid more attention to her sister. She keenly noticed that Ji Songshu looked a bit different today; she had never seen the deep blue sportswear her sister was wearing before, and her hair and face had been meticulously done up. Thus, she said:
“Sister, you look especially beautiful today.”
“Really?” Ji Songshu felt a bit self-conscious and brushed her long hair back. “It’s because I met someone very important today.”
“Eh…?” Ji Chaoxi dragged out the sound, sneaking a wink at Shen Weiyi and teasingly asked, “Sister, are you finally going to wise up and fall in love?”
“I’m referring to you,” Ji Songshu said, tapping her younger sister on the head.
Ji Chaoxi curled her lip and didn’t press further, but she knew it wasn’t just that. She noticed a tiny red smudge on the tip of her sister’s nose. It was a very small, faint spot that was hard to notice—Ji Songshu herself hadn’t even realized it—but Ji Chaoxi wouldn’t mistake it. That was lipstick smudged from another person!
It seems Sister and Sister Weiyi had a quite happy day… she thought.
Soon, the tabletop was cleared, and the three of them sat around the long board on the bed to eat.
Ji Chaoxi buried her head in her food, trying to plug her curiosity with white rice. But as she ate, her mind began to wander, feeling puzzled. Sister has always been unresponsive to Sister Weiyi, so why did she suddenly wise up? What happened today? What did I miss?
During the same meal, Ji Songshu was preoccupied. She was thinking about how Shang Keyu said she would contact her when she had time. When exactly would that be? Should she not be so passive? Should she take the initiative?
Her phone buzzed with a message. Ji Songshu picked it up quickly, wanting to tell Shang Keyu that she was “always prepared,” but after one glance, she put the phone back down.
Pei Jiyue: 「When are you coming back? Bring me ten pounds of sugar oranges; the ones at home are finished.」
Eat, eat, eat, until your face turns yellow!
Ji Songshu looked up and looked at her frail and lovely sister. “Xiaoxi, do you want me to stay here and sleep with you tonight?”
“Sure!” Ji Chaoxi’s voice carried an irrepressible excitement.
Thus, Ji Songshu did not leave that night. She propped herself up on the escort bed, and the sisters chatted until past one in the morning before falling asleep, still full of things to say.
Just as she was about to close her eyes, she suddenly discovered that Shang Keyu had sent her a document ten minutes ago.
Fearing the phone’s light would disturb Chaoxi, she crept to the bathroom.
She clicked on the file; it was filled with dense, tiny text. She had to use two fingers to zoom in to the maximum to barely make it out.
She scanned through it. This was a preliminary IP branding proposal. The initial plan was to invest in the production company of Toast Cat and Bagel Rabbit to produce an animated sequel, supplemented by marketing to build the IP, along with the renovation and reopening of Beletopia.
When she lay back down in bed, Ji Songshu couldn’t sleep at all. Gazing at the moonlight leaking through the gaps in the curtains, she felt her heart thumping.
On the other side of the city, on the 45th floor of the Guangxing Building.
The computer screen showed a cross-border meeting that had just ended after three hours. Shang Keyu stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the city, her exhausted expression reflected in the glass.
Her hands were tucked into her trench coat pockets, her fingertips stroking the long ears of the rabbit charm.
With a ding, a message arrived.
A message from the housekeeper: 「Eldest Miss, the items you wanted have arrived.」
Shang Keyu turned and left the room.
The elevator stopped at the first basement level. She climbed into her car; the headlights flashed, the engine roared, and the sports car gripped the road like a leopard, sweeping through the deserted streets before stopping in the villa’s garage.
Shang Keyu entered the house. The blonde housekeeper bowed slightly. “Bentornata, Signorina.”
Shang Keyu took off her trench coat. The housekeeper reached out to take it and said, “Eldest Miss, the bathwater has been drawn. The items you requested are placed by your bedside.”
Shang Keyu nodded and went upstairs. Halfway up, she remembered something, leaned over the banister, and called down: “No need to prepare the sleep-inducing aromatherapy tonight. The milk as usual.”
Walking into her room, Shang Keyu saw the item on her bedside and an unconscious smile touched her lips.
On top of the neatly folded velvet quilt lay a giant Bagel Rabbit plushie. Behind the plushie’s ear, there was a black line from a manufacturing error.
After her shower, Shang Keyu picked up the plushie and squeezed it. It felt excellent. Looking at it closely, it seemed a bit familiar—it looked a bit like a certain someone.
She cursed softly under her breath, “Idiot.”
Then she suddenly realized she must be working herself crazy. How could a person look like a rabbit? They both just had two nostrils and one eye, after all.
She downed the warm milk, kept at a constant 36°C on the bedside table, in one gulp and dove into the covers to sleep.
The next morning, Ji Songshu was woken up by someone.
As she opened her eyes, she saw Shen Weiyi leaning over, backlit, with a pen clipped to the pocket of her white lab coat.
“I brought breakfast for you both. Eat it while it’s hot.”
“Eat with us.”
“I have to get back to work.”
Ji Songshu waved goodbye to Shen Weiyi, then turned to see Ji Chaoxi staring at her with an inquisitive look.
“Sis, I’m asking you a question, and you must tell me the absolute truth.”
“Okay.”
“What do you think of Sister Weiyi?”
Ji Songshu thought for a moment. “Dr. Shen… she’s a very good person. She’s helped us a lot.”
“No, I mean in terms of romance,” Ji Chaoxi said with an expression of frustrated disappointment.
Ji Songshu blinked, seemingly realizing something extraordinary. Her expression immediately became serious. “Xiaoxi, you’re only sixteen. Romance is too early for you.”
Ji Chaoxi sighed. “Sis, just have some porridge.”
“Oh.” Ji Songshu didn’t understand, but she took it and took a sip, sticking her tongue out after being scalded.
After breakfast, Ji Songshu left. She had classes in the morning and had to go home first to pick up her things.
Upon arriving home, she was surprised to see Pei Jiyue up early, dressed to the nines and posing in front of the full-length mirror.
Ji Songshu took a glance and suddenly felt the clothes were familiar. The black-and-white contrast and the ruffled hem seemed to be the same dress she had seen when Shang Keyu took her shopping yesterday.
Looking closely now, the hem had thin gauze and sequins; it was even more beautiful.
Ji Songshu tried her best to look away, but she couldn’t help stealing another glance.
This glance was caught by Pei Jiyue, who raised her eyebrows and gave a contemptuous “tsk.” Her gaze was as if she were looking at something unclean.
“So you know how to come home now? Staying out all night the first time you go out with that Shang Keyu—I couldn’t tell you were so ‘ambitious.'”
Ji Songshu replied with a faint smile: “That’s right. Keyu is actually quite easy to coax.”
Pei Jiyue was exasperated and cursed several nasty words. Ji Songshu ignored her and walked straight toward her room.
Pei Jiyue shouted behind her, “Where are my oranges?” After seeing Ji Songshu was empty-handed, she became even more displeased. She turned back around angrily and continued to fuss with herself in the mirror.
The dress was beautiful, but it wasn’t quite her size.
Just as Ji Songshu entered her room, she received a message from Shang Keyu.
「Do you like the clothes?」
She was dazed for a moment, then realized Shang Keyu might be referring to the set of sportswear.
So she replied: 「I like them very much.」
On the other side of the screen, Shang Keyu put down her phone with a smile.
An assistant entered the office and reported: “Shen Gang, the head of the procurement department, has been dismissed for embezzling public funds. The legal department is preparing the prosecution materials.”
“Good.” Shang Keyu nodded.
“Also, here is the list of newly hired employees you requested.” The assistant handed over a list.
Shang Keyu scanned it, a cold sneer forming at the corners of her mouth. “Leap Company? Isn’t this the shell company my eldest uncle opened? He still wants to plant people under me. This Shen Yinglong—remove him. All the others are approved.”
“If there’s nothing else, you may leave.”
The assistant walked out of the office. Shang Keyu leaned back in her armchair and let out a long, low sigh.
Before she could rest, the front desk called, saying a Miss Ye, who claimed to be the CEO’s childhood friend, had arrived.
Shang Keyu was somewhat surprised. This childhood friend of hers hated companies and working the most; why would she run all the way here?
She had her sent up.
A moment later, Ye Qingyu walked in aggressively.
She slammed a palm onto the pearwood desk, making the teacup on it jump.
“I have something very, very important to ask you!” she said loudly.
