- Chapter 13 - If You Are Going to Fight, You Cannot Be Stingy
But Ji Chen truly could not fathom how someone like Yuan Yi, with the intelligence of someone who tries to escape through the front door, ever became the Right Protector.
Curious, Ji Chen asked Guitong, “What mistake did he commit to be sentenced to death?”
“Colluding with the Path of Immortality.”
Oh. Then he certainly deserved to die.
To Guitong, his hatred spanned from the Path of Immortality and sword cultivators to heaven, earth, and everything remotely related to his own past. If his subordinate was colluding with the immortal sects, it would be a miracle if he were allowed to live.
“But as you know, I have no spiritual root. I cannot even catch up to him, let alone capture him.”
“He fled into Black Cloud Ridge,” Guitong said, looking toward a smear of dark clouds on the horizon. “He is right there.”
Ji Chen took one look at those black clouds and his legs went weak. “That is way too far, is it not?”
Guitong ignored Ji Chen’s face, which was practically screaming “I do not want to go,” and his red eyes turned cold. “If you bring him back before tomorrow morning, you live. If you do not, both of you die.”
Ji Chen was stunned. “Wait, was the deal not that I would help you find someone?”
Why was he changing the terms now?
Guitong ignored him, seemingly unwilling to even spare him another glance. His body instantly transformed into a cloud of red light dust, and he vanished.
Ji Chen stood there in silence. Truly, the man was a fickle master with a terrible temper. Just who had raised him to be like this?
The Demon Realm, Black Cloud Ridge.
Heavy black mist blanketed the night sky, obscuring the stars and moonlight. The wind whistled through the trees, creating a rustling sound that echoed through the silent night, adding an eerie, ghostly atmosphere.
By the time Ji Chen finally arrived at Black Cloud Ridge, it was already the middle of the night. He was so exhausted he could not take another step, so he sat down against a tree to rest.
Aside from the wind, there was no movement here. It was unnaturally quiet. There were no insects chirping, no birds calling, no flowing water, and no rustling leaves. There was also no sign of Yuan Yi.
Ji Chen really wanted to just give up. Ever since Guitong had carried him back, he had barely eaten anything. If it were not for the wine keeping him going, he would have starved to death by now. The reason his legs felt so powerless was simply because he was famished.
Suddenly, Ji Chen remembered the storage bag he had won from the gambling bet. Perhaps there was food inside. Like a drowning man grasping at a straw, he excitedly pulled it out and opened it.
Ji Chen reached into the bag and pulled things out one by one: Immortal Slaying Grass, the Gilded Sword, a Spirit Liquefaction Bottle, a Chain Link Array, and fifteen spirit stones.
Great. No food. And no wine to drink.
However, it was not entirely useless. Although Ji Chen lacked spiritual power, spirit stones could help him generate a temporary supply. Furthermore, while these immortal herbs, pills, magical weapons, and arrays might be useless to a truly ordinary mortal without a spiritual root, they were incredibly useful to Ji Chen. They were certainly enough to save his life.
It felt as if he had opened a deluxe “New Player Starter Pack” from the storage bag.
After resting for a while, he finally recovered a bit of strength. Ji Chen stood up and continued through the pitch black forest. When he had first arrived, he had been fumbling in the dark, but now the Chain Link Array in his hand emitted a faint yellow spiritual light, illuminating the path ahead.
The device did more than just provide light; it also functioned as a holographic map and even had a GPS positioning system. It could lock onto living beings within a hundred mile radius and display their approximate locations within the array.
Ji Chen saw a black dot moving rapidly toward the northwest. Unsurprisingly, it was likely Yuan Yi. But soon, a white dot appeared near the black one, and the two dots became entangled.
Had Yuan Yi run into someone else sent to capture him? Were they fighting? Could it be the Left Protector?
Filled with questions, Ji Chen hurried toward the northwest. Of course, he could not go very fast since he had to rely on walking. Although the spirit stones could grant him spiritual power, they were limited in number and had to be used only when absolutely necessary.
After walking for about an hour, Ji Chen heard the sounds of fighting from a distance. In the dark woods, spiritual light flashed on and off, and the sound of branches snapping was constant. Ji Chen slowed his pace. As he drew closer, he hid behind a tree trunk that was several times wider than he was and observed in secret.
He saw Yuan Yi locked in a struggle with another person. Ji Chen could not see the other person’s face clearly, and even if he could, he likely would not recognize them. However, he could tell from their clothing that they were from the Blue Moon Sect.
That was the sect Ji Chen had heard about in Linxian Town, the one that had almost been wiped out by demon cultivators. It was also one of the six major immortal sects. Why would a disciple of an immortal sect appear in the Demon Realm?
The Chain Link Array map showed that they were nearly at the border of the Demon Realm. Once they cleared Black Cloud Ridge, they would be in the territory of the Immortal and Mortal Realms.
Ji Chen held his breath, continuing to watch the two fight for their lives. Yuan Yi possessed an Earth element spiritual root, and his moves were mostly summoning spiritual arts. Like a medium, he could summon both objects and spirit beasts.
The person fighting Yuan Yi used a sword. At a glance, they were clearly a sword cultivator with a Lightning element spiritual root, accustomed to using sword qi. The two constantly pulled apart and then lunged back at each other. Blades and shadows darted through the spiritual light as their figures shifted positions with high frequency.
After watching for a while, Ji Chen realized that Yuan Yi was losing. He knew Yuan Yi’s level of spiritual power, and since the man was the Right Protector for the Demon Venerable, he certainly was not weak. If the opponent’s strength surpassed Yuan Yi’s, then they were likely not just at a disciple’s level.
Finally, Yuan Yi failed to parry a move. With a loud “Bang!”, he was struck in the abdomen by the opponent’s sword qi, spitting out blood as he was defeated. He was even sent flying by the force of the strike, crashing directly into the tree where Ji Chen was hiding.
The entire tree was actually snapped in half by the impact!
Fortunately, Ji Chen moved quickly, so the falling trunk did not crush him. Yuan Yi was heavily injured. He sat at the base of the broken tree, clutching the sword wound on his belly, and spoke with difficulty. “Do you think that if you kill me, the Blue Moon Sect will not find out about your betrayal?”
“Hehehe.”
The person landed before Yuan Yi, treading on a sword in mid air. Surrounded by several bolts of purple lightning, the individual stood with one hand behind their back and laughed playfully. “You are the only one who knows I sold Blue Moon Sect intelligence to the Demon Realm, because you are the very person I made the deal with.”
Ji Chen heard this clearly. After the tree snapped, he had hidden behind another one. Since he had no spiritual power on his person, he would not be detected.
The person continued, “I thought the Demon Venerable would have disposed of you. I did not expect you to escape. It seems I must put in a little effort to ensure this becomes your burial ground.”
As the words fell, the long sword in their hand condensed a powerful bolt of lightning sword qi, intending to kill Yuan Yi in a single strike.
Seeing that Yuan Yi was about to be executed, Ji Chen could no longer stay hidden. He actually had a bit of a favorable impression of Yuan Yi. He felt that anyone who could trust a stranger upon their first meeting must be exceptionally simple and likely not a truly bad person.
He decisively took out three spirit stones, placed them at his dantian, and absorbed them.
If you are going to fight, you cannot be stingy.
After absorbing the stones, Ji Chen did not have time to savor the feeling of surging spiritual power throughout his body. He gripped the Gilded Sword in his right hand and casually swung a golden arc of sword light toward the incoming attack.
The golden light collided rapidly with the purple sword qi. In an instant, it felt as if the world were being torn apart, followed by a deafening, thunderous boom. The sound echoed through the mountains and forests like a crack of thunder, refusing to dissipate for a long time. Even the entire forest shook from the massive sound, as if hit by a mountain flood or a tsunami.
Despite it being night, the entire world was currently enveloped in that golden light. It illuminated every corner, driving the darkness away completely. The once pitch black night was now as bright as day.
The previous purple sword qi was completely swallowed by this golden light.
“This! How is this possible!”
“Who is it? Who could possibly crush my sword qi!”
“Ah!”
The golden light did not just swallow the sword qi; it also sent the person flying back violently. Their body tumbled through the air, crashing through one giant tree after another before finally slamming hard into the ground.
When the light faded, a massive fissure had been torn into the earth where the golden light had passed. The crack was bottomless. Looking into it was like staring into a pitch black abyss, enough to make anyone shudder. A large section of the forest in front of them had also collapsed. The once lush woods were now dead silent, with nothing but broken branches and withered leaves scattered on the ground. It looked as if a sudden disaster had struck, leaving behind only desolation and ruin.
As for the person from before, they had long since been sent flying to some unknown, distant corner, their figure nowhere to be seen.
Facing the sudden, destructive scene before him, Yuan Yi’s mouth hung open. He stood there like a wooden statue, frozen in a long state of shock.
Ji Chen, however, looked at the masterpiece of his single sword strike with indifference. He muttered to himself, “Tsk. Fortunately, I only used three spirit stones.”
If he had used all fifteen, this entire mountain range would surely be gone.
As for the unlucky sword cultivator he had just sent flying? It was highly unlikely they were still among the living.
