- Chapter 62 - You Loathe Me That Much? (Proofread)
Hearing those words, Qin Xiangqing merely cast a glance in that direction before quickening her pace toward her private lounge.
“Why isn’t she coming over?” He Zhi asked with a bewildered expression. As she turned her head, she happened to lock eyes with Shen Moxu, whose face had gone stiff.
“Maybe she’s deaf,” Shen Moxu said, her voice devoid of any emotion.
“No way, right? Didn’t she just look over here a second ago?”
He Zhi didn’t notice anything unusual at all. She even patted Shen Moxu on the shoulder and said, “Why didn’t you go to the lounge with her? Last time, didn’t she want you by her side no matter where she went?”
Hearing this, Shen Moxu could no longer maintain her smile. She stood up and said, “I’m going to the restroom.”
She then walked away with an indifferent expression, leaving He Zhi sitting there full of questions. However, He Zhi wasn’t discouraged by Shen Moxu’s reaction; instead, she started chatting with Cheng Siyu, who was sitting nearby.
“You’re Cheng Siyu, aren’t you! I really loved your performance as Chi Xia! I heard Sister Xu mention you before.”
“Thank you.” Facing a stranger she didn’t know, Cheng Siyu always tried to maintain politeness. But He Zhi was no ordinary stranger; once she got a response, she began to chatter incessantly.
“Sister Siyu, can I quietly ask you a question?”
At this moment, Cheng Siyu noticed Ji Yun’s gaze lingering on her. She intentionally moved a seat closer to He Zhi, acting as if the two of them were very close.
“Go ahead.”
“Do you have a partner? Are those gossip news stories true?”
The question she blurted out made Cheng Siyu freeze for a moment. But quickly, sensing Ji Yun’s focused gaze, Cheng Siyu reacted. She cleared her throat and then spoke with feigned indifference.
“Fake. I don’t have a partner. Are you going to introduce one to me?”
“I can do that! You have no idea, I know so many handsome guys and beautiful girls.” He Zhi patted her chest, looking full of confidence.
For a split second, Cheng Siyu remembered when she and Shen Moxu first met; she had been just like this, only to become bland and detached after experiencing that incident.
“Sure. What’s your name? Want to exchange WeChat?”
Cheng Siyu intentionally spoke in a voice that could only be heard by a few people.
Sure enough, as soon as she finished speaking, Ji Yun stood up with a stern face and walked away displeased.
Seeing her leave, Cheng Siyu felt the surrounding atmosphere instantly loosen and lighten.
“My name is He Zhi. For WeChat, I’ll scan you.”
“Okay.”
Not long after adding He Zhi on WeChat, He Zhi went to the set to film. At some point, Ji Yun returned and sat in the seat next to Cheng Siyu again.
“Are you that desperate for people?”
“Yes.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Cheng Siyu replied, “I’m just not desperate for someone like you.”
After saying that, Cheng Siyu stood up and went to the area near the director’s team, watching Shen Moxu, Qin Xiangqing, and He Zhi act out their scene together.
This scene depicted several people in the bureau discussing a case. While talking about a specific point, Chen Yiyun suddenly remembered a few words a passerby had said that day and ordered someone to investigate Wen Shu’s background.
The fingers Shen Moxu used to hold the documents turned white from the pressure, yet because of her role, she had to maintain a face of idol-worship toward Qin Xiangqing.
“Go check on this person, Wen Shu.”
“Is there something academic about her? Master.”
“I think she’s a problem.”
“Cut.”
The director’s voice was like a school bell. Shen Moxu put down the documents and didn’t engage in any further communication with Qin Xiangqing. Without a word, she walked over to sit beside Cheng Siyu, looking at the script.
The next segment was the scene where Chen Yiyun interrogates Wen Shu.
Cheng Siyu knew Shen Moxu was in a bad mood and didn’t say much, simply letting her lean her head against her shoulder with lifeless eyes.
“Why didn’t I take a criminal role back then? That way I could have just stabbed her to death,” Shen Moxu suddenly muttered after a long time. Cheng Siyu wasn’t surprised by her sudden imaginative outburst and simply reminded her, “We live in a society ruled by law.”
The next scene began filming soon. This was the first time Cheng Siyu and Qin Xiangqing would perform a scene together.
Due to Shen Moxu’s situation, her impression of Qin Xiangqing had also hit rock bottom—hardly better than a stranger.
“Action.”
The scene they were filming attracted many onlookers. Aside from admiring their looks, this was also a climactic moment for this unit of the story. The director even specifically asked the photographer to capture several stills for promotional leaks.
“Teacher Wen, we meet again.” Chen Yiyun’s voice carried a sense of enchantment, her eyes sharp as arrows, wanting to pierce through the person in front of her.
“Officer Chen, long time no see.” Wen Shu seemed to have anticipated this visit, her expression calm and composed.
“Teacher Wen, your complexion isn’t very good. Have you been suffering from insomnia these past few days?”
“The police station sends word every two or three days; it’s a bit hard not to lose sleep. After all, I need to cooperate with the police investigation at all times, don’t I?”
There was a hint of mockery in Wen Shu’s words. She sat with her hands folded on the table, her expression showing no displeasure.
“As long as the case remains unsolved, I also find it hard to sleep. Let’s talk about business.”
“Go ahead.”
“Did you know that a few days before Su Sheng died, he bought a bottle of aphrodisiac through a classmate?”
“I didn’t know,” Wen Shu replied, staring back into Chen Yiyun’s hawk-like eyes.
“Then he had just confessed his feelings to you a week before he died, didn’t he?” Chen Yiyun suddenly leaned in close. She detected a slight abnormality in Wen Shu’s eyes.
But unlike a normal criminal feeling guilty, it was more like the shrinking back of a victim.
“Yes. He was in puberty; a burst of hormones is very normal.” Wen Shu quickly returned to normal, responding with the same words she had used with Xue Ao last time.
“Teacher Wen, you are truly beautiful. Do you have a boyfriend?” Chen Yiyun suddenly shifted directions, sizing up Wen Shu as she asked. She had also heard the rumors regarding Wen Shu and the principal.
“No. Is Officer Chen concerned about that as well?” Wen Shu adjusted her glasses.
“I just wanted to say we have many young and handsome civil police officers in our bureau.”
“No need. I don’t have plans to look for a partner for the time being. Living alone is quite nice.”
“Teacher Wen, may I ask how your relationship with your family is?”
“Just a normal family relationship.” Wen Shu had already noticed her personal file lying by Chen Yiyun’s right hand; she assumed the officer already understood all her social connections.
“Speaking of which, I have one last question for Teacher Wen.”
“Mm?”
“If your student did something illegal, but current laws were unable to punish him, what would you do?”
“I would tell his parents, and then stay far away.”
“Cut!”
The director’s voice came through, and it took Cheng Siyu a few minutes to snap out of character. She had to admit that although Qin Xiangqing’s character was poor, her acting was excellent. While acting with her, she truly felt the sensation of being interrogated, a feeling Qin Xiangqing brought to her single-handedly.
“Sister Siyu, you two were truly, seriously, incredibly stunning.”
As soon as she walked back to the makeup area, Li Yexing spoke up. Then she turned and whispered something to Lin Zhizhi. Although it was very quiet, Cheng Siyu still heard it. She said, “Tonight I’m going to find a movie about a female cop and a criminal to watch.”
As for what kind of movie that was, Cheng Siyu didn’t know.
The director was also very satisfied with the performance of the two just now and even made a point to come over and praise Cheng Siyu. She was one of the few who could mesh so perfectly with Qin Xiangqing during their first time filming together.
“Thank you, Director.” Cheng Siyu always maintained a polite smile when faced with praise.
After the director left, she walked to the rest area and sat down, tiredly taking off her glasses to rub her eyes. She wasn’t nearsighted; though the gold-rimmed glasses had no prescription, the feeling of seeing people through a layer of something always made her eyes uncomfortable.
“Ordered this for you.”
Shen Moxu had walked up to her side at some point and pressed a cup of still-steaming coffee into her hand.
“Thank you.” Cheng Siyu took a sip. The warmth of the coffee seemed to spread through her whole body through the walls of the cup, feeling cozy.
“Don’t be so polite with me.”
Shen Moxu sat down beside her naturally. After taking a sip of coffee herself, she spoke up and asked,
“Are you and Little Ji still in a cold war?”
“We broke up. It’s not a cold war.”
At the mention of Ji Yun, Cheng Siyu’s expression could turn dark in an instant.
“Is there no room for reconciliation?”
Seeing Cheng Siyu’s poor expression, Shen Moxu turned her head to meet her eyes and asked, only to have her head pushed back by Cheng Siyu’s hand.
“None.”
“Fine then. She specifically bought the coffee and asked me to come find you to fish for information.”
“She ordered the coffee?”
Hearing this, Cheng Siyu placed the coffee back on the table, stood up, and left.
“Siyu…” Shen Moxu wanted to reach out to stop her, but only caught the air.
The next second, Ji Yun sat in the seat Cheng Siyu had just occupied. She naturally picked up the coffee Cheng Siyu had taken a sip of and started drinking it. Before she could speak, Shen Moxu patted her on the shoulder and said,
“The road ahead is long and full of obstacles.”
“Tell me, in what way am I inferior to Xie You? Just because I don’t have resources?” Ji Yun said in bewilderment. In her eyes, the reason Cheng Siyu didn’t love her in this life was because she was being provoked by Xie You.
“Well…” Shen Moxu turned back and observed her for a long time before saying, “Maybe she likes career-oriented women.”
On the other side, Cheng Siyu returned to the dressing room. Pain shot through her heel, and only then did she realize the tissue she had stuffed in earlier had fallen out at some point. Her heel was now rubbed raw with a blister.
Cheng Siyu was usually indifferent to these minor pains. Seeing that the tissue padding was ineffective, she stopped bothering with it, thinking it would be fine once it developed a callus.
At that moment, a wave of sleepiness hit her. Her next scene wasn’t for another two or three hours. She set an alarm, intending to take a short nap to refresh her spirit.
“Sister Siyu, why are you here?”
After an unknown amount of time, the dressing room door was opened. He Zhi and her makeup artist walked in, just in time to see Cheng Siyu sleeping there.
Cheng Siyu was startled awake by the sound. She instinctively checked the time on her phone; only twenty minutes had passed.
“Nothing, just came here to sit for a while and fell asleep without realizing it,” Cheng Siyu replied.
“I see. Sorry for disturbing you, go back to sleep.” He Zhi sat down in a chair two or three seats away from her and began having her makeup done.
However, Cheng Siyu’s sleepiness had faded. She picked up the script beside her and began flipping through it.
“Sister Siyu, do you know what’s going on between Sister Qing and Sister Xu? I see the atmosphere between them isn’t quite right. I just went to the restroom and saw them whispering and arguing about something. Sister Xu even said, ‘People like you should go to hell.'”
The word “whispering” made Cheng Siyu chuckle. She didn’t tell He Zhi everything, simply stating, “They didn’t have an amicable breakup.”
“How can that be? Last time I saw them, they were stuck together like glue? And weren’t they just fine a moment ago?”
Faced with her many questions, Cheng Siyu didn’t explain them one by one. She only said, “People come and go, it’s normal.”
At this moment, she suddenly understood why Jiang Shizi spoke with a natural Zen-like quality; it was simply because having experienced too much, one doesn’t want to explain, so words become concise and difficult to understand.
“Sigh, how could they end up like this?”
Hearing this, Cheng Siyu smiled. How could they end up like this? It probably happened the moment Shen Moxu opened a door and found her own sister in Qin Xiangqing’s bed.
“No wonder I said their faces turned sour today whenever I mentioned them to their faces. I thought it was because I didn’t brush my teeth today.”
“Pfft.” Cheng Siyu couldn’t help but laugh. This person must have had a lot to talk about with Shen Moxu before; their thought processes were on the same wavelength.
“Sister Siyu, you look so beautiful when you smile. If I looked like you, I’d definitely smile every day to charm all the fans and rivals alike.”
Although she was a bit far away, He Zhi was still captivated by Cheng Siyu’s smile.
Cheng Siyu didn’t respond further. Instead, she continued flipping through her script. her next scene was a monologue, requiring her to recount Wen Shu’s life in a flat, calm tone.
Wen Shu’s scenes only took two days to film, but her lines and the story behind her seemed to truly contain a person’s entire lifetime.
At this point, the dressing room door was opened again. Ji Yun, her makeup artist, and her little assistant also walked in. After glancing at the distance between Cheng Siyu and He Zhi, Ji Yun sat down next to Cheng Siyu. She even placed that cup of coffee from earlier on the table, seemingly on purpose for Cheng Siyu to see.
However, things didn’t go as she wished. Since she entered, Cheng Siyu’s gaze had remained fixed on the script in front of her, never wavering.
“Miss, President Ji said your health hasn’t fully recovered, so don’t film too many high-intensity scenes. Also, a private doctor will contact you today; you need to schedule a follow-up appointment with her.”
“I know. Can you stop being as naggy as my father’s assistant?”
“This is all what President Ji instructed me to say. Please respect my work, Miss. Also, there are no scenes scheduled for you this afternoon. You need to go home and rest well, Miss.”
The voice of Ji Yun’s little assistant was incessant, and naturally, it reached Cheng Siyu’s ears. This was the Ji Yun in her memory—like a child who hadn’t been weaned, needing someone to take care of everything, enjoying the fruits of others’ labor.
However, it had long since had nothing to do with her. She picked up her script and packed her things, preparing to stand up and walk out. At that moment, Ji Yun once again grabbed her hand.
“Do you loathe me that much?”
Cheng Siyu was about to shake her off, but the red marks left by the IV drip on the back of Ji Yun’s hand made her stop.
