- Chapter 54 - I Am Just a Tool to Season Their Relationship
“Hello everyone, I am Cheng Siyu, a student from the Department of Performance.”
In the final moments of her life, Ji Yun remembered only this single sentence. On the day of Cheng Siyu’s birthday, Ji Yun had given the dog food and the puppy to the grandmother living downstairs, carefully instructing her on how to clean up after the pet and other necessary precautions.
She had specifically requested that if she were to fall ill and could no longer care for the dog, the grandmother should call the pet shop’s number.
After bidding farewell to the dog and the elderly woman, she returned home—the home she once shared with Cheng Siyu.
She picked up a photo of Cheng Siyu and watched a video she had painstakingly found of Cheng Siyu performing during her freshman year. In the footage, Cheng Siyu’s smile was radiant.
“Siyu, I miss you so much,” Ji Yun whispered, gently kissing the image of Cheng Siyu through the phone screen.
She walked into the bathroom and turned on the bathtub faucet. Her phone continued to play the video, filling every corner of the bathroom with Cheng Siyu’s laughter.
Ji Yun used alcohol to sterilize the prepared razor blade. In the photograph, Cheng Siyu continued to gaze at her.
“I’m sorry. I know you don’t want to see me, but I miss you so much. Without you, I don’t think I can go on living.”
After one final kiss to the frame, blood began to flow from Ji Yun’s wrist.
Drip. Drip.
This was the final sound emitted by Ji Yun’s life.
In her trance, she saw Cheng Siyu’s silhouette. Just as she tried to reach out and touch her, Cheng Siyu turned back with a smile, before gradually blurring and vanishing from sight.
“Beep—”
When Ji Yun woke up again, she was lying in a hospital bed. She looked at her wrist, only to find there wasn’t a single scar.
“Xiao Yun, you’re awake, Xiao Yun!” Seeing her wake up, Liu Jiani rushed over in a panic. “Do you know you were in a car accident? Going out drag racing late at night just because of a breakup… are you trying to see how much you can get away with?”
Drag racing? Ji Yun frowned. Hadn’t she slit her wrists in the bathtub? When did it become a car accident?
“President Ji told me. It was wrong of him to have Xiao Yu approach you, but he was also afraid something might happen to you.”
Ji Yan’s voice drifted over calmly. Hearing the name “Xiao Yu,” Ji Yun bolted upright, though the movement caused her wounds to throb with a sharp pain that made her grimace. Despite this, she managed to ask:
“Xiao Yu… is it Cheng Siyu?”
Liu Jiani was startled by her sudden agitation and hurriedly tried to steady her. “Yes, it’s Cheng Siyu. What’s wrong?”
At that moment, Ji Yun glanced at the television across the room, which was broadcasting a news segment: “Another work by Cheng Siyu is set to air; she may become the first actress to win an award this year.”
Her pupils constricted the moment she saw Cheng Siyu’s image on the screen.
However, a sudden, violent headache struck her, and she lost consciousness once more.
As her vision faded into white, many images flashed before her eyes like a revolving lantern, most of them involving Cheng Siyu.
Finally, the scenes stopped at the moment in this lifetime when Cheng Siyu handed the necklace back to her and demanded a breakup.
Ji Yun tried to stop it, but she only grasped at thin air. But at least Cheng Siyu isn’t dead, right? she asked herself.
When she woke up again, she was surrounded by doctors and visiting family members, including Ji Wanli and Ji Yan.
“The patient’s condition is stable for now, but she cannot handle any more stimulation. She needs quiet rest.”
The doctor’s voice reached her. She opened her eyes with difficulty and saw the time displayed on the TV: it was four years ago.
I’ve been reborn? And in this life, I was dumped by Cheng Siyu? The memories in Ji Yun’s brain began to clash, but eventually, fueled by the will to see Cheng Siyu, she merged the memories of both lifetimes.
Fortunately, she was still alive in this life and hadn’t died on that rainy day. Better yet, the “current” her hadn’t yet done anything to betray her.
Ji Yun suddenly understood. She opened her mouth, her dry throat producing a raspy voice: “I want to see Cheng Siyu.”
Even if it was just to see her one last time, she wanted to apologize, to repent, and to experience all the things they hadn’t yet done together.
“She belongs to the Xi Corporation now.”
Hearing Ji Yun’s words, Ji Wanli snorted coldly. “She requested to terminate her contract and leave you herself.”
“I want to see her.”
Perhaps Ji Yun hadn’t expected her relationship with Ji Wanli to be decent in this life, but she still cried out. She knew Ji Wanli was the only one in the room with the power to make it happen.
Seeing no reaction from Ji Wanli, Ji Yun tore off the tubes connected to her body and moved to get out of bed, muttering, “I’m going to find her, I’m going to…”
Her unhealed wounds tore open from the strain, and the bandages wrapping her body began to seep bright red blood. She didn’t care. Although Ji Wanli ordered the bodyguards to grab her, she struggled to break free, tears streaming down her face.
“I have to go… go see Cheng Siyu.”
Ultimately, she was tied back to the bed. Ji Wanli likely hadn’t expected his daughter to be such a romantic fool, leaving only with the words: “Once your body is recovered, I won’t care if you see her a hundred times.”
He then strode away.
After calming down, Ji Yun picked up her phone, opened her contacts, and found Cheng Siyu’s number. After hesitating repeatedly, she pressed the call button with a trembling hand.
But as expected, the call resulted only in a series of busy tones, followed by a cold female voice: “The user you have dialed is powered off. Please redial later.”
She stared at the contact’s name “Siyu.” Suddenly, tears fell uncontrollably. Even though this should have been a happy occasion, her tears only fell harder.
Just then, the ward door opened. Ji Yun looked toward the entrance and saw a figure very similar to Cheng Siyu. But upon closer inspection, it wasn’t her; it was Ji Yan. The light in Ji Yun’s eyes instantly dimmed.
“Xiao Yun, what’s wrong? Why are you crying like this?” Ji Yan’s concerned voice reached her.
“I… Sister, I’ve wronged Siyu. It’s my fault. I need to find her. I need to apologize.”
“Okay, okay, yes.” This was the first time Ji Yan had seen Ji Yun cry like this, so she could only hold her and offer comfort. “Once you’re better, you can see her again.”
Meanwhile, Cheng Siyu saw the news of Ji Yun’s car accident on television, but she simply changed the channel with indifference, her heart feeling no ripple of emotion.
At the same time, Shen Moxu, who was dead drunk in the living room, was muttering incoherently.
“Siyu… Siyu, I don’t understand. Why is it like this?”
Two days ago, when Cheng Siyu arrived at her film crew’s hotel, she found Shen Moxu covered in snow. Her eyes were red, and she stood motionless in the snowbank.
“Siyu, it hurts right here.”
Seeing Cheng Siyu, the shivering Shen Moxu pointed to the position of her heart.
“What happened?” Without time to think, Cheng Siyu pulled her into her arms and led her inside.
“I… I’m so ridiculous.” Shen Moxu’s voice was laced with sobs.
“Speak slowly.”
Cheng Siyu pulled her into the heated interior and took the elevator back to her room.
“I…” Shen Moxu crouched down and wept helplessly. “My sister and Qin Xiangqing were in our home, doing… doing it.”
Her words stunned Cheng Siyu. Shen Zhinian and Qin Xiangqing?
“When did this happen?” she blurted out.
“I don’t know, I don’t know! I went back early today to give her a surprise, and then I saw them in our bed. Hahahahaha!”
Shen Moxu’s state was close to a breakdown. Cheng Siyu held her tightly as the elevator reached their floor. She pulled the distraught Shen Moxu back to the room.
“Why? Why?!”
Back in the room, Shen Moxu continued to crouch helplessly on the floor. Cheng Siyu suddenly remembered the Shen Moxu of her previous life. She must have gone through this very event, which caused her to become taciturn and eventually jump ship to Qin Xiangqing’s company, right?
But in her previous life, Cheng Siyu had been so consumed by her romance with Ji Yun that she had fundamentally ignored the changes in Shen Moxu.
Now, she could only hold Shen Moxu tightly.
“Siyu, Siyu, I’m so cold. I’m so tired.” Shen Moxu huddled into herself, the images of the two of them together replaying constantly before her eyes.
“Go to sleep. Everything will be better when you wake up.” Cheng Siyu didn’t know what to say, so she could only hold her to provide comfort.
Eventually, exhausted by the emotional upheaval, Shen Moxu fell asleep in her arms.
Cheng Siyu struggled to move her onto the bed. Just then, she heard the phone in Shen Moxu’s pocket ring. She picked it up and saw the caller ID: “Older Sister.”
To avoid waking the newly sleeping Shen Moxu, Cheng Siyu took the phone to the balcony.
“Hello? Xiao Xu, listen to your sister’s explanation. It’s not what you saw.” Shen Zhinian’s voice had lost its usual calm and composure, becoming panicked and incoherent.
“This is Cheng Siyu. Shen Moxu is asleep,” Cheng Siyu replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Siyu, you… can you help me explain to Xiao Xu? That is, the truth isn’t what she saw.”
“Then what is the truth?” Cheng Siyu’s tone became unfriendly. She couldn’t imagine how the usually dignified and self-disciplined Shen Zhinian could do something like climbing into her own sister’s girlfriend’s bed.
“Where are you? Give me the address. I’ll go explain to you both in person.”
“No need. She’s asleep, and she doesn’t want to see you.”
With that, Cheng Siyu hung up without hesitation and turned off Shen Moxu’s phone. In her view, no reason was sufficient to justify Shen Zhinian climbing into the bed of her sister’s partner.
She looked out at the lights of the city below, unable to imagine that the kind of plot seen only in TV dramas and novels would happen right next to her.
However, she also felt sad that two friends with almost nothing in common were so strikingly similar in their romantic experiences.
Cheng Siyu could empathize with Shen Moxu’s heartbreak; it was exactly like when she had seen Ji Yun bring another woman to their home.
Except back then, before she had the chance to find someone to vent to, that truck had already taken her life.
At this thought, she ran her hands through her hair in frustration and walked back into the room.
On the bed, Shen Moxu was still asleep, appearing restless. Cheng Siyu thought that she probably didn’t want to wake up and face this massive mess.
That night, Cheng Siyu scrolled through her phone in agitation. She called room service for a bottle of red wine and drank it all alone.
Although this matter had no direct relation to her, she felt miserable, as if there was a knot of frustration in her heart that she couldn’t release.
Today was her birthday, but she felt none of the joy of a birthday girl. As the alcohol clouded her brain, she eventually fell asleep on the floor.
The next morning, Cheng Siyu woke up and looked at the bed, only to find it empty. She scrambled up in a panic and saw Shen Moxu standing on the balcony in a posture that suggested she was about to jump. Her mind went blank, and she dashed over, grabbing Shen Moxu around the waist.
With a thud, both of them fell heavily onto the floor.
“Do you want to die?!” Ignoring her own pain, Cheng Siyu held Shen Moxu tightly, terrified she would try it again. “Losing your mind over a small matter… this is nothing like the Shen Moxu I know.”
“They were together since college! What about me? What am I?! Am I just a tool to season their love?!”
