- Chapter 42 - You Don't Have to Move
Arriving at the outdoor filming location, since Cheng Siyu had just fainted, the crew could only let Jiang Shizi film the next scene first.
Cheng Siyu stood by watching for a while before Lin Zhizhi leaned in beside her and asked cautiously, “Sister Siyu, do you want to go touch up your makeup first?”
“Okay.”
After saying that, Cheng Siyu and Lin Zhizhi walked to the dressing room. Li Yexing was sitting with several other makeup artists looking at a phone, with a few bursts of laughter coming from them from time to time.
Seeing Cheng Siyu, Li Yexing tucked away her smile and put on a serious professional expression. “Sister Siyu, you’re awake?”
“Mhm,” Cheng Siyu replied as she found a seat.
“Sister Siyu, you don’t even need makeup. This look you have right after waking up is exactly the popular ‘sickly beauty’ style, isn’t it?” Li Yexing glided her swivel chair over to Cheng Siyu like she was ice skating, sizing her up while rummaging through a makeup bag. “Sister Siyu, if you didn’t have a girlfriend, even I would be falling for you.”
Her voice was as soft and “sweet-girl” as ever. Cheng Siyu didn’t answer and instead looked at her phone.
Ji Yun had sent her a goofy selfie. Cheng Siyu stared at it, lost in thought for a long while, until the next message arrived: “I heard from Sister Xixi that you fainted. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Cheng Siyu typed back two words. Then, letting out a somewhat helpless sigh, she placed the phone face-down back on the table.
She seemed to have forgotten a bit how to love someone.
When Cheng Siyu came out after finishing her makeup, she heard a commotion. Walking to the filming site, she saw an elderly woman standing in front of Jiang Shizi.
“Jiang Shizi! Our Xiaoyan is getting a divorce now! It’s all your fault! How could you ruin her like this?”
The woman’s unreasonable shouting rang out. Only then did Cheng Siyu recognize the indignant woman as Qi Yan’s mother.
Jiang Shizi stood before her, stunned and speechless. Instead, it was Xi You who came over to pull Mother Qi back, trying to reason with her kindly: “Auntie, Qi Yan is twenty-seven this year. Whatever she does is her own decision; what does it have to do with Jiang Shizi?”
“It’s because of her! Otherwise, our Xiaoyan wouldn’t have turned out like this!” Mother Qi seemed to go frantic, still trying to reach past Xi You to point an accusing finger at Jiang Shizi.
Seeing Xi You continuously blocking her, she turned her target toward Cheng Siyu, who was standing nearby, and delivered another slap across Cheng Siyu’s face.
“And you! You and Jiang Shizi, your shameless pair! You conspired to harm Xiaoyan together—to ruin her like this. Doesn’t your heart ache?”
The immense force caused a clear handprint to instantly appear on Cheng Siyu’s fair face. The physical pain made tears uncontrollably well up in her eyes.
As if that wasn’t enough, Mother Qi began to make a scene in the studio, shouting and smashing things.
“I’ve called Qi Yan; she’s coming to take her mother back.”
Xi You confirmed that the cameras were running, told everyone to back away, and pulled the dazed Cheng Siyu behind her. She then lowered her head to inspect the injury and asked, “Does it hurt?”
Even though her face was still burning with pain, Cheng Siyu forced two words through her teeth: “I’m fine.” She then broke away from Xi You’s hold and stood to the side.
“Who let her in?” Xi You’s voice dropped several degrees in temperature.
“She said she was here for a set visit. We didn’t expect it to turn out like this. Sorry, Director Xi.”
Meanwhile, Cheng Siyu stood next to Jiang Shizi. The injury on Jiang Shizi’s face was noticeably heavier than her own. She asked the same question Shen Moxu had once asked her: “Is it worth it?”
Jiang Shizi just chuckled lightly, just like the first time Cheng Siyu had met her, and spoke in a flat tone, “What’s the use of thinking about that now? It’s all in the past.”
With things escalated to this point, filming could no longer continue. Cheng Siyu and Jiang Shizi took an ambulance to the hospital to document their injuries for compensation, while Mother Qi was taken away by the police called by Xi You.
Qi Yan appeared again as well. At the police station, Xi You recounted everything her mother had done to Jiang Shizi over the past few years. Qi Yan stood frozen for a long time before finally saying calmly, “I want to see Jiang Shizi.”
In the afternoon, after the swelling had gone down, Cheng Siyu and Jiang Shizi were chatting in a VIP hospital room, occasionally watching the news.
Xi You seemed intent on blowing the incident up; Mother Qi’s actions were classified as a malicious assault and hit the news headlines.
Jiang Shizi just watched the news on the television and said calmly, “I just hope it doesn’t affect her.”
“You big romantic fool.”
Cheng Siyu uttered those words once again, then turned to look out the window. The rainy days had completely passed, and a rare sun was out today, though it was still cold enough to make one shiver.
“This is such a big deal, Qi Yan must know by now, right?” She turned back and asked Jiang Shizi, who was staring blankly at the TV.
“Probably,” Jiang Shizi responded simply, then looked at her phone as if contemplating something, before suddenly asking the air, “She’s getting a divorce?”
Only then did Cheng Siyu remember Mother Qi’s earlier shouting: “Xiaoyan is getting a divorce and it’s all your fault.” However, she then reconsidered, “He Jinnian has been caught so many times; it’s only normal for Qi Yan to want a divorce.”
As the two were still talking, the door to the ward was suddenly opened. Qi Yan walked in, followed by Xi You. To Cheng Siyu’s surprise, Ji Yun was there too.
“Sister Siyu!” The moment she saw Cheng Siyu, Ji Yun ran over and pulled her into a hug.
Cheng Siyu instinctively avoided her gaze and asked, “Didn’t you join your film crew?”
“Sister Qi Yan and I were shooting for a magazine when she got the call saying her mother went to your set. I rushed over with her. Are you okay?” Ji Yun looked up at Cheng Siyu. Cheng Siyu looked into her eyes, recalling the scene she had seen after fainting yesterday. After regaining her composure, she replied, “I’m fine, I just got hit once.”
“As long as you’re okay. I missed you so much.” Ji Yun nuzzled into her arms. At that moment, Cheng Siyu noticed Qi Yan looking at Jiang Shizi as if she wanted to say something but hesitated. Cheng Siyu stood up and said, “Let’s go outside to talk.”
Ji Yun responded obediently, “Okay.”
Not long after the two went out, Xi You followed, though she only said to Cheng Siyu, “I’m going back to the set to tally the damages,” and then turned to leave.
“Why is she telling you that?” Ji Yun protested as soon as Xi You left. Then, her gaze fell upon the bracelet on Cheng Siyu’s left wrist. “Why are you wearing this one again? Where’s the one I gave you?”
“Back at the dorms, I forgot to bring it,” Cheng Siyu replied nonchalantly. She looked at Ji Yun, meeting her eyes. “Ji Yun, do you love me?”
Her voice was faint and ethereal, like a piece of thin ice about to crack, yet her tone was firmer than ever before.
It was the first time Ji Yun had seen Cheng Siyu like this; she felt herself drowning in her gaze. She answered without hesitation, “I do.”
“Heh.” Cheng Siyu gave a light chuckle, her eyes turning flirtatious. No one knew what she was thinking as she added, “Mhm, I love you too.”
From that moment on, Ji Yun felt that something had begun to change, but when she carefully searched for the cause, everything seemed exactly as it had been.
At that moment, a commotion came from the ward, followed by Qi Yan’s angry shout: “What makes you think this is good for me? You think making me get married, have a husband, and bear children is living the ‘beautiful life’ you imagine?”
Ji Yun was about to peek in to see what was happening, but Cheng Siyu tugged at the corner of her clothes. “Accompany me for a walk.”
Even though it was the first time Cheng Siyu had ever made such a gesture, Ji Yun had an illusion—it felt as if she had felt this exact tug countless times before. Turning back, Cheng Siyu’s eyes were still so captivating; Ji Yun instinctively didn’t want to refuse. “Okay.”
Ji Yun and Cheng Siyu walked for a while in the park near the hospital and sat down on a bench. The sunlight spilled over them, chasing away a hint of the chill.
Cheng Siyu looked at Ji Yun and asked, “How is your new drama filming going?”
“It’s okay. The director said I’m a diamond in the rough,” Ji Yun smiled mischievously and leaned on Cheng Siyu’s shoulder. She carried a faint fragrance that was Ji Yun’s favorite.
“Mhm.” Cheng Siyu replied. If her memory served her right, Ji Yun would become famous after this drama was finished, and then things would repeat just like in her previous life.
But she would not repeat the same mistakes.
“I don’t like Xi You,” Ji Yun suddenly said.
“Why?” Cheng Siyu rarely asked for reasons. Ji Yun was awkward for a few seconds before answering, “She seems interested in you. Don’t interact with her too much; I’m jealous.”
“Mhm, okay.” This time Cheng Siyu agreed surprisingly quickly. Ji Yun assumed she had accepted it wholeheartedly and changed the subject.
“Do you think Qi Yan will get back together with Jiang Shizi after the divorce?”
“No,” Cheng Siyu said immediately.
“Why? Qi Yan knows everything now.” Ji Yun asked back in confusion, her gaze still lingering on the bracelet on Cheng Siyu’s wrist. she held that hand thoughtfully.
“Qi Yan and Jiang Shizi are no longer the same two people who did whatever they wanted back then.”
In her previous life, a major reason Cheng Siyu could cast everything aside to be with Ji Yun was that she had nothing left to care about. The “mountain” of family that others saw was something she could easily leave behind.
As for Cheng Wuxing and her stepmother, she would rather die elsewhere than go home to fight Cheng Hanyi for the family fortune. Rather than her wanting to shake them off, they actually wanted to shake her off even more.
“Qi Yan has a child. If she and Jiang Shizi get together, what would He Wuyou call Jiang Shizi?”
Furthermore, after doing so much for Qi Yan, Jiang Shizi certainly wouldn’t want to see her give up everything again to be with her. She had placed herself in the least important position in Qi Yan’s heart without even asking if Qi Yan was willing.
“True. I had a fight with my dad, but at least I won’t be forced into a business marriage by him.” Ji Yun’s tone was lucky, but the look in Cheng Siyu’s eyes as she watched her was complicated. She only replied after a moment, “Mhm.”
That night, after Cheng Siyu was discharged and returned to the hotel, she looked at the announcement Xi You had posted on her phone. Due to the series of events today, filming was suspended for two days.
Just as she finished her shower and was preparing to sleep, a knock came at the door. She opened it to find a stubborn-looking Ji Yun.
“Didn’t you go back?”
“Qi Yan said she wants to stay here for another day and will take me back tomorrow, so I came to take refuge with you.”
Cheng Siyu hesitated for a long while before opening the door. “Come in.”
That night, Cheng Siyu was so tired she was about to fall straight to sleep, only to feel someone with a rather high body temperature embracing her and undoing the buttons of her pajamas.
“No, I have things to do tomorrow,” Cheng Siyu instinctively refused.
“You don’t have to move,” the person whispered into her ear.
After all that tossing and turning, it wasn’t until one or two in the morning that Cheng Siyu finally fell asleep. Ji Yun, after tidying everything up, just gazed at the exhausted woman and gave her collarbone a light bite.
“I like you so much.”
