- Chapter 39.1 - Being Used as a Shield
At that moment, Cheng Siyu’s phone rang. She glanced at it; it was a WeChat message from Jiang Shizi. Her tone was casual, as if nothing had happened, as she asked Cheng Siyu:
“The show aired. Want to do some promotion together?”
Cheng Siyu hesitated for a few seconds. Considering that cooperating with program publicity was part of her contract, she agreed and replied:
“Okay.”
Ten minutes later, Cheng Siyu’s Weibo was updated: “Remember to watch The Little Ones today. I’ll be waiting for you on time.” She accompanied the post with a poster she found in the program’s group chat.
A few seconds later, Cheng Siyu saw Jiang Shizi repost and comment on her Weibo. She seemed intent on causing a misunderstanding, as the caption read: “I’ll be there too.”
Only then did Cheng Siyu realize that Jiang Shizi wanted to continue using her as a shield to distance herself from Qi Yan.
Despite knowing she was being used, she couldn’t bring herself to hate Jiang Shizi. Perhaps it was because she had never experienced this kind of affection before. She just wondered what Ji Yun would think when she saw it.
However, given the precedent of Cheng Siyu’s anger from previous times, Ji Yun didn’t call her directly to interrogate her. Instead, like Jiang Shizi, she reposted and commented on her Weibo: “Okay, I’ll be watching you on time.”
Ji Yun’s comment eased the tension. People simply felt that since True or False was about to air, it was normal for the cast to help with promotions as a group.
But then Cheng Siyu noticed that Qi Yan had also reposted and commented on her Weibo: “Remember to take me with you.”
Before Cheng Siyu could even react, her casual promotional post had landed her on the hot search list under the topic #ChengSiyuCommentSection.
Instantly, marketing accounts, fans, and paid trolls began fighting in her comment section.
Cheng Siyu knew that looking further would only give her a massive headache, so she simply turned off her phone.
By this time, the TV program had reached the segment where the children chose their favorite guests, showing the scene where He Wuyou stood behind Jiang Shizi.
Cheng Siyu watched as the production team intentionally showed a close-up of Qi Yan’s eyes. Even without subtitles or captions, the message was clear.
“She’s pretty,” He Wuyou said, giving her reason. The camera then cut to a surprised look in Jiang Shizi’s eyes.
Just then, Cheng Siyu’s phone rang. It wasn’t Ji Yun coming to settle scores, but Shen Moxu.
Remembering that Shen Moxu’s flight was in the afternoon, Cheng Siyu hurried to the balcony to answer.
“Siyu, my sister and I had a falling out.” Shen Moxu’s voice came through the phone, sounding as if she had just finished crying.
“What did you guys talk about?” Cheng Siyu frowned slightly. Shen Zhinian never gave her sister the cold shoulder, and usually, when Shen Moxu got into trouble, she would act spoiled to make up.
“She insisted that I break up with Qin Xiangqing, saying she’s up to no good. In a fit of anger, I told her to just act like she doesn’t have a sister anymore.” Shen Moxu began to sob again. “Then she said it’s time I grew up, and she walked away without any expression. Later, I found out the PIN for my bank cards had been changed and my car keys were gone.”
“So what do you plan to do now?” Cheng Siyu felt that this time, Shen Zhinian was serious.
“Qin Xiangqing told me to stay at her place; she’ll pay me a salary,” Shen Moxu murmured, then added, “Siyu, come drink with me tonight.”
Cheng Siyu was thinking of how to comfort her, but upon hearing the invitation to drink, she didn’t refuse. “Okay, where?”
“The little lawn at the park near school,” Shen Moxu said. “It’s been a long time since we went there. I’ll bring the alcohol.”
Cheng Siyu hummed in agreement. The little lawn was where they used to sit and chat whenever they had free time. Since they both started dating and filming, they hadn’t been back.
“Siyu, going out so late?”
That evening, her roommate watched as Cheng Siyu changed her clothes and asked curiously, “Are you going to see your boyfriend?”
Cheng Siyu replied with a smile, “I’m going to see your boyfriend.” After saying that, she playfully tickled her ticklish roommate, who scrambled onto the bed. Only then did she say, “I’m going to see Shen Moxu.”
The roommates all knew about the best-friend relationship between Shen Moxu and Cheng Siyu. This was largely thanks to Shen Moxu frequently ordering piles of takeout to their dorm to eat with everyone, making her an “unofficial” member of their room.
“Tch~ Just go then. Why tickle me? When you get famous, I’m going to find the paparazzi to expose you!” The roommate buried herself in her quilt, sounding indignant.
“Then when you get famous, I’ll expose you for playing games, picking your feet, and swearing in the dorm,” Cheng Siyu replied calmly. The roommate froze, then muffled her face in the covers, whispering, “Bad woman.”
Feeling better after the exchange, Cheng Siyu headed out. She stopped at a convenience store to buy a bottle of water and a pack of tissues, then arrived at the meeting spot to wait.
Before long, Shen Moxu arrived. Her usually energetic, youthful face was dull, with obvious tear stains at the corners of her eyes.
“Old Cheng.”
As soon as they met, Shen Moxu put down the beer and lunged into Cheng Siyu’s arms, crying. Cheng Siyu comforted her gently: “Don’t cry, don’t cry. Your sister probably won’t stay mad at you forever; your sisters, after all.”
“Master Cheng, cast a divination for me. Calculate when we will make up. The last time I fought with my sister was when I was three and I used her precious books for origami.”
“Hmm…” Cheng Siyu pondered for a moment before concluding, “Probably whenever you break up with Qin Xiangqing.”
“Master, you… waaaaah!” Shen Moxu started crying again, and Cheng Siyu quickly took tissues from her bag to wipe her tears.
“There, there, stop crying.”
Cheng Siyu had envied the bond between Shen Moxu and Shen Zhinian more than once. Now it seemed Shen Moxu had truly crossed a line. But what could Qin Xiangqing have done that was so outrageous to warrant such anger from Shen Zhinian?
“Did you ask your sister why she insists on you breaking up with Qin Xiangqing?” Cheng Siyu asked, looking down.
“No. She just said Qin Xiangqing has been messing around since college. But my goddess showed me the chat records—those were just rumors made up by rival companies to smear her. There were even a few people who confessed to her, but she rejected them all.”
Shen Moxu didn’t understand, and neither did Cheng Siyu. She could only comfort her: “Your sisters; she won’t stay angry for long.”
“If your younger sister fought with someone with a bad reputation, would you get angry and ignore her?” Shen Moxu suddenly looked up at Cheng Siyu.
“The situation is different. She has parents; it’s not my place to manage her.” Cheng Siyu looked up at the night sky, but since it had rained a few days ago, it was only a hazy gray.
“What if your parents stopped caring?”
Shen Moxu’s parents had long since left the company to travel abroad, and they couldn’t even be reached by phone or WeChat.
“Well, our families are different. If my father and his wife didn’t care, I wouldn’t care either. My relationship with her isn’t as good as yours with your sister.”
Cheng Siyu’s attitude toward Cheng Hanyi was more for show; Shen Zhinian’s attitude toward Shen Moxu was one of responsibility.
“I see Xiaoyi always treating you like a real sister. How can you say that about her?” Shen Moxu pouted; her emotions having calmed down.
“She just needs to remain ignorant,” Cheng Siyu replied, then turned the topic back to Shen Moxu. “What do you plan to do now?”
“For now, I’ll just be a little ‘kept mistress’ for my goddess,” Shen Moxu said, revealing her plan.
“Not going to act anymore?” Cheng Siyu poked her in the waist.
“I will, but I’ll wait a bit. The honeymoon phase with my goddess isn’t over yet. Besides, you and Little Ji are in two dramas back-to-back. If I go filming, I’ll have to be away from her.” Shen Moxu’s voice was full of reluctance.
Cheng Siyu tapped her on the head. “Up to you. But I still want to remind you: don’t fall into the river of love and forget the reason you entered the acting department.”
“I won’t forget. I’ll just wait a bit longer. I’ll work as an assistant first to gain some experience.” As Shen Moxu spoke, she took a can of beer from the bag and opened it skillfully.
“Drink less. I’m not like Qin Xiangqing—I won’t carry you back. I’ll call the recycling station to haul you away.” Cheng Siyu warned.
“You underestimate me. My tolerance is better than my goddess’s,” Shen Moxu said nonsensically.
Cheng Siyu looked at her but said nothing more. Her phone rang, and the familiar ringtone told her it was Ji Yun calling to check in.
Since all three of them knew each other, Cheng Siyu didn’t avoid her and answered directly in front of Shen Moxu.
“Sister, what are you doing?” As soon as the call connected, Ji Yun’s voice came through. She seemed to have intentionally lowered her tone to sound sweet, but Cheng Siyu wasn’t used to it.
“Drinking with Shen Moxu,” Cheng Siyu answered truthfully. Hearing this, Shen Moxu knew who was on the other end.
“I see. I want to drink with you too,” Ji Yun’s voice came through the phone. “Too bad I’m on set, otherwise I’d come find you.”
“Forget it.” Cheng Siyu’s mind was filled with images of Ji Yun getting handsy after drinking. She rubbed her temples and changed the subject. “How is the filming? Is anyone giving you a hard time?”
“It’s great. The director even praised my intuition today. No one is giving me a hard time, don’t worry. But I miss you so much.”
Ji Yun’s aggrieved voice came through the phone. Cheng Siyu laughed softly. “Are you still not weaned? We’ve barely been apart.”
“You two, that’s enough.” Shen Moxu, who had been watching from the side, interrupted them dissatisfiedly.
“That’s all for now. I’m hanging up.” Cheng Siyu said. On the other end, Ji Yun could only whisper a small “Okay” before reluctantly hanging up.
After hanging up, Cheng Siyu stared at the hazy night sky, lost in thought. She could vaguely remember the feeling of rain hitting her face in her previous life; the sky then had looked just like it did today.
“Siyu? Siyu? Are you like Little Ji, unable to function after just one day apart?” Shen Moxu poked her, thinking she was lost in longing. “Look at you, missing Little Ji after one day. I’m also reluctant to leave my goddess.”
“I never knew you were so sentimental.” Cheng Siyu opened her water and took a sip.
In the past, Shen Moxu changed boyfriends every month. Although they never went to bed, they did everything else from holding hands to kissing, and she had dated all sorts of handsome guys.
