After Rebirth, I Became My Ex's "White Moonlight" - Chapter 19
During the commercial break at intermission, the program crew arranged for Cheng Siyu to take the stage and sing. She performed “Mist,” the theme song for The Chilled Moon of a Cool Summer.
The moment the microphone was handed to her, Cheng Siyu was still a bit dazed. It wasn’t until the accompaniment began to play that she snapped back to reality.
This song had also been Ji Yun’s claim to fame in her previous life. Hearing the familiar melody, Cheng Siyu felt a sense of trance, as if she had been transported back to those late nights of the past.
She had initially feared she would make a fool of herself by forgetting the lyrics, but as the music played, the words flowed from her mouth one by one. During those days spent alone, every word of the song seemed to have been carved into her mind by the passage of time.
In Ji Yun’s rendition, this song was a little love ballad expressing a secret crush and affection; however, coming from Cheng Siyu’s mouth, it sounded more like the desolate sorrow of a shattered heart.
When the song ended, everyone remained immersed in their emotions, unable to pull away. Cheng Siyu herself stood frozen on the spot for a long time, unable to step out of the song’s atmosphere. It wasn’t until the commercial break ended and the host continued with the program flow that she regained her senses.
This time, they played Werewolf again. Having played it once before, Cheng Siyu was more familiar with the ropes this time, though the role she drew was merely an ordinary “Villager.”
The first night was a “Silent Night” where no one died.
When Cheng Siyu opened her eyes, she discovered that both the audience and the host were looking at her with meaningful gazes.
“Is something wrong?” she asked, feeling bewildered, but the game continued to progress.
In the end, the Werewolves failed, and Cheng Siyu once again successfully survived until the finish.
It wasn’t until the recording ended and she went to the restroom that Cheng Siyu heard from the host that during this round, Shen Moxu and Wen Zhiluo were the Werewolves, while Ji Yun was the Witch. On the first night, the Werewolves had chosen to kill Cheng Siyu.
It was the usually silent Wen Zhiluo who suggested it, and as a close friend, Shen Moxu naturally agreed with both hands and feet.
What they hadn’t expected was that once Ji Yun learned the victim was Cheng Siyu, she used her healing potion almost without a second thought.
Furthermore, since the majority of the audience had seen the movie, they naturally began to ship the two of them.
Cheng Siyu remained silent about the matter. She did not yet want the affairs between her and Ji Yun to become common knowledge; that would be detrimental to her future development.
That evening, to fulfill yesterday’s promise, Cheng Siyu brought Shen Moxu to a Chinese restaurant.
“Why didn’t you call Little Ji to join us?”
“She’s busy,” Cheng Siyu lied. She hadn’t mentioned the matter to Ji Yun at all, simply saying she had plans for the evening.
“A busy person indeed,” Shen Moxu lamented. “Siyu.”
“Yes?”
Shen Moxu suddenly paused, looking at Cheng Siyu as if remembering something. Immersed in her own emotions, Cheng Siyu reflexively answered.
“Are you angry at Little Ji because of that photo incident last time?”
“No.”
She truly wasn’t angry about the photo; she just felt a bit of an uncomfortable knot in her heart because of Ji Yan.
“Alright. Oh, right, Siyu—you don’t mind if I invite one more person, do you?”
“Huh?” Before Cheng Siyu could process this, she saw Shen Moxu waving. She looked up to see a familiar face standing beside Shen Moxu: Qin Xiangqing.
“Hello.” A faint smile appeared on Qin Xiangqing’s face. Her charming phoenix eyes curved slightly, showing no sign of awkwardness.
“…Hello.” It took Cheng Siyu a long moment to recover from her shock.
“This is Siyu, my best friend.” “Siyu, this is my sister’s classmate, Qin Xiangqing.”
At that moment, Cheng Siyu pulled Shen Moxu to the side. “Why didn’t you tell me in advance?”
Had Qin Xiangqing not been there, Cheng Siyu would have given her a piece of her mind.
“Wasn’t it just that I found out she happened to be nearby?”
“This meal is on me; consider it a gift for our first meeting. Besides, I’m considered your senior, so how could I let you two pay?”
Qin Xiangqing interrupted their hushed conversation. Her voice carried a hint of undeniable authority, yet her face remained smiling.
Looking at her smile, Cheng Siyu felt that she didn’t seem like the arrogant and conceited actress Ji Yun had described in her previous life. However, deep down, she still felt that something was slightly off.
While she was lost in thought, Cheng Siyu was pulled into her seat by Shen Moxu.
At the table, Shen Moxu and Qin Xiangqing chatted very harmoniously. Cheng Siyu simply sat to the side, cutting her steak.
From time to time, Qin Xiangqing spoke of interesting anecdotes from university with Shen Zhinian. Shen Moxu listened with great interest, while Cheng Siyu added a comment or two occasionally.
At one point, Qin Xiangqing drained her red wine in one gulp. No one noticed the trace of hidden sorrow and gloom buried deep in her eyes.
After the meal, Qin Xiangqing left first on the pretext of returning to her film set. Shen Moxu then drove Cheng Siyu back to the dormitory.
“Siyu, what do you think of my goddess?”
In the car, Shen Moxu suddenly asked slyly. Cheng Siyu, who was looking at her phone, frowned slightly and replied, “She’s okay.”
“Just okay? Well, I suppose since you have Little Ji…” Shen Moxu muttered to herself.
“Oh, right, Siyu, check the trending searches. I wonder if our appearance on the show gained any traction.”
Reminded by Shen Moxu, Cheng Siyu opened Weibo. There were many related topics, but most centered around the movie and the director. The only thing that caught Cheng Siyu’s attention was the social issues brought to light by the film in the trending topics.
In the comment section, viewers were discussing the backgrounds of Chi Li and Chi Xia, while others discussed the mutual salvation between Ye Xingyue and Chi Li.
Cheng Siyu randomly clicked on a video cut. The content was an edit of both Cheng Siyu and Ji Yun singing “Mist.” Although it was the same song, the two had performed it with different effects, as if corresponding to their characters’ respective fates in the movie.
One was full of hope and the future; the other withered and drifted away with the wind.
Along with the melody of the song, Cheng Siyu arrived at the school gate. After saying goodbye to Shen Moxu, she walked down the path toward the dormitory building.
Though it wasn’t winter yet, gusts of autumn wind struck her body, making Cheng Siyu shudder several times. She quickened her pace toward the dorm.
As she neared the building, she spotted a familiar figure. It was Ji Yun.
Ji Yun stood downstairs, her hair loose and blowing in the wind. Her silhouette looked somewhat lonely and dejected.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Cheng Siyu stepped forward and draped her thin coat over her.
“Why are you out here? Aren’t you cold?”
“I’m cold.”
Ji Yun’s voice was tiny, as if squeezed through a narrow crack.
Cheng Siyu checked the dormitory group chat. Since it was the change of seasons and tomorrow was a holiday, her roommates had all gone home. Feeling safe, she brought Ji Yun back to the room.
“What happened?”
After entering the dorm, Cheng Siyu first poured a glass of hot water and handed it to the wind-chilled Ji Yun.
“My… my mother… she’s gone.”
After a long silence, as if the warmth of the water had finally reached her hands, Ji Yun stammered out that single sentence. Then, a tear slid down her cheek and dripped into the water.
