- Chapter 91 - The Grand Duke's Castle (3)
Many people were gathered in Leo’s room.
Count Lucas and Dex, as well as the members of the Gray Wolf Knights, were all waiting for the physician to finish his examination.
“Fortunately, the antidote herb seems to be working well. Still, you should rest for a few days.”
“I’m fine. What rest are you talking about when I’m perfectly fine?”
“If you didn’t have poison resistance, you would have been poisoned much faster. It’s fortunate that you’ve been poisoned by this poison before; otherwise, you wouldn’t be so well. It was really dangerous.”
Lucas, who had been listening to the physician’s scolding, spoke in a stern tone.
“Listen to Callisto. It would be best to postpone the consecration ceremony until you recover. Two days from now is too.”
“Postpone what? Proceed as planned, Count. That’s enough time.”
Lucas frowned at Leo’s words and asked the physician.
“Will he be alright, Callisto?”
“He should be fine as long as he’s just performing the ceremony. But you must not leave the bed today. I will diligently burn the antidote herb.”
Lucas sighed at Callisto’s permission and nodded.
“Then let’s stay one more day before returning. Will that be alright? If we arrive tomorrow evening, the consecration ceremony will be the next day.”
“I told you I’m fine. I said I’m perfectly fine.”
The faces of those gathered in the room brightened at Leo’s grumbling.
The physician told him to rest and left the room with the others.
Ayla hesitated and was about to follow them out when Leo called out to her in a blunt voice.
“Where are you going? Aren’t you going to nurse me?”
“I thought the physician told you to rest.”
“Do you think I can’t rest if you’re here?”
Ayla’s eyes widened and she approached him, noticing a hint of disappointment in his voice.
“…It suits you well.”
“Chloe got me this dress. Is it alright?”
“You are always beautiful.”
Ayla slightly opened her mouth at his words, which he replied to with a smirk.
Her face flushed at his compliment.
“I didn’t see you when I woke up.”
“Ah, I was washing up.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Pardon?”
“Like that time, waking up and not finding you next to me. It doesn’t feel good.”
“Ah!”
Ayla looked apologetic, reminded of their first night together, which he had brought up again.
“I’m sorry about that time.”
“You should be. It’s a habit of yours to put me to sleep and run away. Isn’t it?”
Ayla pouted and retorted at Leo’s words, as if he was dumbfounded.
“To be precise, I’ve only run away once.”
“You’re so great.”
“I am great, of course. I do put you to sleep, don’t I?”
“You’re the one who sleeps better, though.”
He said teasingly.
Ayla seemed flustered by the unexpected remark and made excuses.
“Th, that’s because I couldn’t sleep properly for two days while nursing you.”
“…Was that so?”
Ayla nodded quickly as he asked back, looking a little surprised.
“Yes. How could I have slept well when you couldn’t even wake up?”
“This is touching. It wouldn’t be so bad to be sick once in a while.”
“What nonsense are you talking about? If you get hurt one more time, I’m going to be really angry.”
“Haha. Alright.”
Just then, Chloe appeared with a knock.
She was holding a tray with Leo’s breakfast.
“Even the lady has come? Is there anyone left in the Count’s territory besides the security personnel?”
Chloe smiled and replied to Leo’s dumbfounded question.
“Everyone except the security personnel has come here.”
“Seriously, the Count is such a fuss.”
She smiled at Leo’s reaction as he clicked his tongue and turned to Ayla.
“It’s a nutritional soup. Would you like to have some too, Princess?”
“I will. Thank you, Chloe.”
Leo scolded Ayla, who nodded.
“I can understand me, but why are you eating this kind of thing? Go to the dining hall and eat properly.”
“But you told me to nurse you?”
“You can do it after eating.”
“Later.”
Ayla smiled brightly and led him to the table.
After finishing the meal together, unable to resist, Leo suddenly noticed Ayla looking out the window.
“What are you looking at so intently?”
“Ah. The scenery outside is pretty.”
“No way. It must be a mess because it’s not being maintained.”
Ayla smiled faintly at his cold assessment, then said, looking at the scenery again.
“Not the garden, the scenery far away.”
The scenery viewed from the Grand Duke’s Castle, built on a somewhat high ground, offered a panoramic view of Eisenfeldt Territory.
The land stretching beyond the faintly visible walls and guard towers was vast.
The fields, sparsely covered with vegetation, were close to grayish-brown and swayed like waves whenever the wind passed.
The mountain range visible in the distance was layered and met the sky.
“You’re the first person to say that’s pretty.”
“I’m seeing this kind of color for the first time in this season. The coming winter will soon be covered in snow and be pure white, right?”
“The winters in the North are harsh, Ayla. I just hope you won’t be surprised.”
“What does it matter if it’s a little cold? The coming spring will be even more welcome.”
Leo thought that this place, the Grand Duke’s Castle, wasn’t so bad after all at Ayla’s smiling reply.
The Grand Duke’s Castle stood tall on a cliff-like hill.
As a castle originally inhabited by royalty, the stone walls cast a huge shadow and boasted a magnificent appearance.
Jet-black stones were stacked in layers to form the walls, and the spire rising high in the center of the castle was sharp enough to pierce the sky.
“Wow! It’s bigger than I thought.”
It was because she was curious about the exterior of the Grand Duke’s Castle, which she hadn’t seen when she entered at night while Leo was taking a bath.
After looking up at it for a while, Ayla started walking through the garden, thinking she would take a walk since she was already out.
The garden, which had not yet been repaired, was covered with overgrown bushes and wildflowers.
The fact that she felt a sense of beauty even in that naturalness made her imagine how splendidly the garden had once been cultivated.
Ayla’s eyes sparkled as she walked, feeling the somewhat cool breeze.
Turning to the back of the castle, she saw a small tower that was not visible from the front.
The iron gate at the entrance was tightly closed, and the tower was decorated with intricate patterns on the stone walls.
There was a scent that was a mixture of a strong wood smell and an old metal smell.
Ayla, who was approaching out of curiosity, widened her eyes.
A black cat ran out like an arrow and jumped up, then went inside through the tower’s window.
“Goodness. Is that Night?”
She had definitely seen him sleeping on the bed in Leo’s room before she came out, so how did he get outside the castle?
It was only a fleeting moment, so she couldn’t be sure it was Night, but she couldn’t rule it out either.
Ayla stamped her feet and had no choice but to reach out to the iron gate.
The iron gate opened smoothly, making her worries about what to do if it was locked pale in comparison.
Inside, there was a spiral staircase leading up to the tower, and it wasn’t dark thanks to the windows that were placed here and there.
Ayla carefully started climbing the stairs.
“Was the tower this tall…?”
Just when she thought she would never reach the end even after climbing and climbing, she heard a meow from above.
Ayla, who had finally reached the end of the stairs, cautiously pushed open the arched wooden door and peeked inside.
The interior of the tower, which exuded a subtle herbal scent amidst the warm air, was wider and cozier than she had expected. Antique bookshelves lined the walls, and a table and two chairs made of wood were placed in the center.
A man with long black hair was sitting on a large window frame with a view of the northern landscape stretching far away. The man, with long, sharp eyes and perfectly sculpted features, was quietly stroking a black cat sitting on the opposite window frame.
“We have a guest.”
Ayla, who was standing blankly at the picturesque scenery, flinched in surprise at the man’s voice as he turned to look at her.
“Ah! I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone was here.”
“It seems you followed this fellow?”
His low, soft baritone voice filled the space.
Next to the man, whose age was impossible to guess, the cat Night meowed as if greeting her.
“Night!”
She wasn’t mistaken after all.
Night was giving his head to the man’s hand as if meeting someone he missed.
It was a familiar sight, as if they had been together for a very long time.
The man gently got up and offered her a chair.
“Now that you’ve come all the way here, would you like a cup of tea?”
