After My Flash Marriage with the Sick Beauty, I Reached the Pinnacle of My Life - Chapter 72
Xia Shishi’s vision went black, and she collapsed onto the floor.
She felt her whole body was burning, more unbearable than falling into a furnace. Her limbs were weak, leaving her dizzy and at the mercy of others.
In addition to this, a sudden heavy pressure seized her chest.
She couldn’t catch her breath and could only pant shallowly.
Clutching the quilt, Xia Shishi completely lost consciousness. When she next regained awareness, she was in a dream.
It was the prison.
The lights-out time had arrived at the prison. Not much light filtered through the small window. Wen Jiao lay on the single bed, suffering from a high fever.
This was a scene from her previous life. At the time, Xia Shishi was a ghost, watching on, utterly helpless. She still remembered how desperately she had hoped the prison would arrange a doctor for Wen Jiao.
Why was she dreaming this? Xia Shishi’s eyes were bloodshot. She wanted to rush and embrace Wen Jiao, but she couldn’t get close, no matter what she tried.
Right, this was a dream.
“Jiao jiao, wake up.” Even in a dream, Xia Shishi was in immense pain, her heart clenching repeatedly.
The dream was too vivid, so clear that even knowing it was a dream, Xia Shishi’s emotions were completely stirred.
“Jiao jiao, your body will be better soon.”
“You will be able to stand up again.”
“I won’t let this happen to you again. Wake up now!”
“The past has already changed; the future should change too…”
Xia Shishi tried to manipulate the dream. She closed her eyes, fantasizing that when she opened them again, she would be back in their home. This was her dream; it should be hers to control!
But no matter how many times she looked, Wen Jiao remained in an extremely poor state.
Xia Shishi was distressed watching her. Perhaps she did manage to control the dream, because a doctor finally arrived.
The prison guard opened the door, and Zheng He entered, carrying a simple medicine box.
“Quick, Zheng He, hurry and look at my wife,” Xia Shishi urged anxiously. Zheng He seemed unable to hear her and walked over to Wen Jiao on his own.
Seeing Zheng He, Xia Shishi was relieved.
Then she looked towards the door and noticed something strange.
In her previous life, after she died, she could only follow Wen Jiao and couldn’t go anywhere else. She could only watch as Wen Jiao loved her and then blamed herself for not protecting her.
Those emotions permeated Xia Shishi, making her constantly feel Wen Jiao was undeserving of such pain.
Xia Shishi looked at the open door. The prison guard was now gone. Zheng He was meticulously giving Wen Jiao an IV drip and anti-inflammatory medicine.
She watched for a moment, then tentatively walked outside.
She successfully stepped over the threshold and walked out.
Because she could only follow Wen Jiao in her previous life, Xia Shishi wasn’t aware of many things. The subsequent development of the plot was only revealed to her after she lived out Wen Jiao’s life and received the book.
It turned out Zhou Xiaojiang was the female lead, and Fu Yunhan was the male lead.
They were merely cogs arranged in the plot.
Cold sweat broke out on Xia Shishi’s forehead. She remembered that at this point in the plot, Zhou Xiaojiang and Fu Yunhan were married, with a child.
Currently, Zhou Xiaojiang was a sought-after ‘Triple Gold’ movie queen, and Fu Yunhan was a formidable CEO with no domestic competition. The thought of their happiness made Xia Shishi seethe with hatred.
She quickly drifted to where the two of them were.
Unexpectedly, Zhou Xiaojiang’s abdomen was flat, and there were no children. Her relationship with Fu Yunhan was not particularly affectionate.
Xia Shishi remembered that when these two sent Wen Jiao to prison, they were constantly calling each other ‘baby’ and ‘darling,’ a massive contrast to the present.
Xia Shishi wanted to find the reason why, but before she could start, a voice called out in her ear.
“Shishi… wake up quickly…”
Again and again.
The voice was low, soft, and could only be her Wen Jiao.
Wen Jiao was calling her.
Xia Shishi opened her eyes.
Wen Jiao’s eyes were anxious and concerned, with dark circles underneath. She was wearing a patient gown, which made her look thin. It was distressing that a patient had to worry about her.
Xia Shishi immediately tried to get up, but Wen Jiao grabbed her hand: “Don’t move.”
“I…” Xia Shishi looked around.
“You had a high fever,” Wen Jiao’s voice was tired.
She had to monitor her own health, check-ups, and medication, while also worrying about Xia Shishi, who had suddenly fallen sick and fainted. Her nerves were highly strained. The moment Xia Shishi opened her eyes, Wen Jiao felt herself resisting the physical exhaustion.
But she was afraid that when she woke up again, Xia Shishi would be unconscious once more.
Wen Jiao suddenly encircled Xia Shishi in her arms, tightening her hold, squeezing Xia Shishi painfully.
Xia Shishi gasped: “How could I get sick? I haven’t been sick in years.”
Wen Jiao rested her head on top of Xia Shishi’s: “It will be better soon.”
Wen Jiao pursed her lips.
She had never known that a loved one’s illness could be so heartbreaking. She ran her hand through Xia Shishi’s hair, suppressing her feelings, and only wishing for her own body to get better faster.
She didn’t want Xia Shishi to experience this feeling—it was torturous, driving a person nearly insane, as if everything lost its meaning.
Xia Shishi also reached out and hugged Wen Jiao. What she couldn’t do in the dream, she could do in reality. She held her tight, unwilling to let go, though she still felt a little regretful.
She still hadn’t found the reason. Perhaps the key to the future lay there.
But forget it; having her wife by her side was enough. Xia Shishi let out a long sigh of relief. This might be a good sign—the plot had already changed. As long as they tried a little harder.
There were still two years.
These two years were enough for Wen Jiao’s body to recover, and Xia Shishi would also work hard to survive so that the two of them could live happily.
“I’m fine,” Xia Shishi patted Wen Jiao’s shoulder. “Look on the bright side, now we’re in the same room and can take care of each other. That’s fair.”
Grandpa Wen walked in from outside: “But it’s tough for this old man.”
He came out to accompany his granddaughter, but now he was taking care of two people.
If he hadn’t brought so many people on this trip, Grandpa Wen would genuinely be worried.
He sized up Xia Shishi and saw that although she looked slightly groggy, her eyes were clear. It seemed her condition wasn’t too serious and she just needed a few days of rest.
“You little cheat, what were you worrying about to make yourself sick?” Grandpa Wen criticized without reservation.
Wen Jiao’s dark eyes were deep, watching Xia Shishi silently, not speaking up.
Xia Shishi was indeed too tired to joke back at Grandpa Wen, only vaguely saying, “It’s better for me to have a fever than for Jiaojiao to have one.”
Wen Jiao, being close, heard it.
Grandpa Wen heard it clearly too and sighed. He couldn’t be blamed for being partial; this was true.
Xia Shishi had always been healthy; being sick once wasn’t a big deal. Wen Jiao’s surgery was imminent, and she absolutely couldn’t get sick.
Whether Wen Jiao’s body could return to normal, and even stand up, all depended on this one time.
Perhaps Xia Shishi truly had taken the bad luck for Wen Jiao.
“What do you want to eat? I’ll have someone send it over.” The villa they specifically rented was for this purpose. Eating something homemade was more reassuring.
Xia Shishi didn’t have much of an appetite, but she looked at Wen Jiao and named a few dishes, wanting to eat with her.
So Grandpa Wen went out to make a phone call and instructed his subordinates to deliver the food.
The two ate and then rested separately.
Xia Shishi slept for a while longer. When she woke up, the sky outside was already dark. She had slept for a long time, and now her mind was clear. She couldn’t fall back asleep no matter what.
Afraid of disturbing Wen Jiao on the adjacent bed, Xia Shishi lay straight, resigned.
She was still wondering how her father, Mr. Xia, had handled the matters and hadn’t had a chance to check.
She also wondered if Ye Murou was working smoothly at Zhou Xiaojiang’s company and if Fu Yunhan was secretly looking for Zhou Xiaojiang.
Before she could think deeper, Xia Shishi heard movement from Wen Jiao’s side, suggesting Wen Jiao was also awake. Just as she was about to ask, she heard the computer booting up.
Xia Shishi was stunned. When did Wen Jiao bring a computer?
Xia Shishi continued to lie still.
After Wen Jiao finished booting up, silence returned. Only the faint sounds of the mouse and keyboard could be heard. The sounds were very soft, deliberately quieted down to avoid disturbing Xia Shishi’s sleep.
If it were the usual Xia Shishi, she probably wouldn’t have heard these tiny sounds.
Then she heard Wen Jiao speaking.
It seemed that typing would create too much noise, so she preferred to speak in a low voice, either recording a voice message or using voice-to-text.
But Xia Shishi heard what Wen Jiao said.
“She plans to cooperate with Shi cun?”
“…When was their last meeting?”
“What is the Board of Directors’ opinion?”
“I understand.”
“Just continue working.”
They were talking about work.
So, even though Wen Jiao had voluntarily resigned from the board, she hadn’t lost control of the company.
Xia Shishi was wondering how Wen Jiao was planning things, maybe waiting until she recovered to find a way back to the company. With Wen Jiao’s ability, she would definitely be able to return and take back the CEO position.
It turned out Wen Jiao’s thoughts were more complex than she imagined.
Shicun, she remembered, Wen Jiao had refused to cooperate with this person.
If it were Wen Jiao’s mother, she would surely ask for Wen Jiao’s opinion and lean towards not cooperating.
Other than Wen Jiao’s mother, it must be Wen Jiao’s aunt.
Wen Jiao’s voice was steady, as if she had expected this.
Despite this, Xia Shishi ground her teeth. Cooperating with Shicun—wasn’t that just adding trouble to the company? Wen Jiao’s aunt couldn’t possibly think she could handle it, right?
“…”
Wen Jiao quieted down. Xia Shishi inwardly thought, oh no. She tightly closed her eyes, continuing to pretend to be asleep.
“Why are you grinding your teeth while you sleep?” A voice filled with a hint of a smile sounded.
Xia Shishi: “…” What a wrongful accusation.
Wen Jiao had just gotten up in the middle of the night to check, and after speaking, she turned off the computer and went back to sleep.
Xia Shishi heard the room return to silence and then pouted. She had been relieved that Wen Jiao could put aside work and focus on recovery, yet this person was secretly working hard behind her back.
If she weren’t guilty of faking sleep, she would have climbed up and questioned her.
Xia Shishi turned over.
She continued to let her mind wander.
The next day.
“Morning,” Xia Shishi greeted as she woke up. Wen Jiao was already eating breakfast.
She now had to maintain a regular diet and eat meals on time, so she couldn’t specifically wait for Xia Shishi to wake up.
Xia Shishi scratched her messy hair, her tone steady: “Morning.”
“You don’t look like you slept well?” Wen Jiao asked calmly.
Xia Shishi couldn’t very well say she had spent the whole night thinking and only fell asleep when the sky started to lighten.
“I was wondering if I should call my dad.”
Xia Shishi changed the subject.
“I already called him,” Wen Jiao said, thinking she meant about the sickness.
Xia Shishi shook her head: “I want to ask about something else. I told you before that I suspect there’s a traitor in the company. I found a lead with Ye Murou, but since I had to come here, I asked my dad to handle it.”
Wen Jiao hummed in acknowledgment.
“By the way, did I grind my teeth while I was sleeping last night?” Xia Shishi suddenly asked.
“…” Wen Jiao’s hand paused while eating, then she responded calmly, “Come and eat quickly.”
She had learned to change the subject, too.
Xia Shishi suppressed a smile and climbed up to wash and eat breakfast. When she looked up, she saw Wei Xixue at the door.
She was there for her rounds and happened to overhear their conversation.
Xia Shishi, who had just mentioned Ye Murou, instantly felt guilty. Although she quickly acted as if nothing was wrong, Wei Xixue still caught her reaction.
Wei Xixue lowered her head, seemingly deep in thought.
When Xia Shishi finished washing up and came out to eat, Wei Xixue spoke: “Is her name Ye Murou?”
Xia Shishi clicked her tongue: “Doctor, why are you so persistent? Do you two have some deep-seated feud?” Even if she liked her, it shouldn’t be to this extent.
She went over to eat breakfast. If Wei Xixue figured it out, so be it. Anyway, as long as she didn’t reveal Ye Murou’s location, Wei Xixue couldn’t do anything to her.
Wei Xixue also thought of this point, maintaining a steady expression. She confirmed with Wen Jiao: “Is the surgery starting in half a month?”
Xia Shishi’s eating movements froze. She asked with some concern: “That soon?”
Half a month—wasn’t that too fast? Should they not prepare more?
In Xia Shishi’s expectations, the process was to first recover her health, then have the surgery.
There wasn’t any urgent matter rushing them from behind. Why the hurry?
“I can’t wait, Shishi,” Wen Jiao looked over. “I’ve confirmed with the doctors while you were unconscious. Starting the surgery in half a month won’t be a major issue. Even if the situation isn’t right then, we can postpone it and rearrange.”
Xia Shishi opened her mouth but didn’t speak.
Wei Xixue didn’t bother to look at the two of them. After completing her duties, she left the room.
All she needed was the name.
The following steps would be much smoother.
Xia Shishi hadn’t expected the person she worked hard to hide was about to be dug up. She obediently finished breakfast and called her father.
Wen Jiao told her to make the call in the room, as she also wanted to listen. Xia Shishi thought that perhaps the two of them might have more to discuss, so she didn’t refuse and called her father in the hospital room.
After the call connected, Mr. Xia first inquired about Xia Shishi’s health. To him, his daughter’s health was paramount.
“Your mother is already preparing to come and see you,” Mr. Xia said.
He also wanted to visit, but the company couldn’t be left unattended.
“Ji Yan refuses to admit it, but the evidence we provided is substantial, so you don’t need to worry about this matter.”
Mr. Xia knew how to handle these kinds of things.
At the same time, he felt gratified, believing his daughter was also becoming capable. His tone was full of praise: “Follow Wen Jiao and learn more. The company will rely on the two of you in the future!”
Xia Shishi: “…”
She simply handed the phone to Wen Jiao. Wen Jiao also reacted quickly, taking the phone and immediately greeting him as ‘Dad.’ Mr. Xia responded just as quickly. It was clear that Wen Jiao had become his second daughter.
If it were anyone else sharing her parents’ affection, Xia Shishi definitely wouldn’t agree.
But if it was Wen Jiao, that was a different story.
Wen Jiao deserved it.
Xia Shishi rested her chin on her hand, watching her and Mr. Xia talking about something, and then thought of that dream again.
If the dream was an omen of the future, then why had the relationship between Zhou Xiaojiang and Fu Yunhan already broken down, yet Wen Jiao was still repeating the same fate? What was it that hadn’t changed between them?
She really wanted to go out and call Ye Murou to ask for the specific details.
It was genuinely worrying.
