After My Flash Marriage with the Sick Beauty, I Reached the Pinnacle of My Life - Chapter 4
It was as if Xia Shishi had become a completely different person.
She held Wen Jiao’s hand, her long, dark eyelashes wet with tears, looking very distressed.
She seemed desperately afraid that Wen Jiao would reject her because of one sentence from Fu Yunhan.
Wen Jiao’s eyes fixed on Xia Shishi with a complex look. She couldn’t quite understand it, but she had to admit that seeing Xia Shishi like this brought her great joy.
Just as she was about to hold Xia Shishi’s hand in return and reach out with her other hand to stroke the soft hair on her head, Father Xia and Mother Xia squeezed into the room.
Wen Jiao withdrew her fingers, her slightly pale face betraying no emotion.
Father Xia had not expected his precious daughter to pull such a stunt and was too shocked to speak coherently.
Just yesterday, Xia Shishi had slammed the door shut and refused to come out, no matter how much Mother Xia pleaded.
It seemed that in just one night, Xia Shishi had not only changed her mind but had also done so thoroughly?
Mother Xia desperately wanted to smile happily but didn’t dare to show it too obviously, fearing that this was merely a temporary amusement for her daughter, which would lead to another fuss later. The corners of her mouth stretched into an immensely conflicted arch: “Shishi was very anxious on the way here; she didn’t deliberately arrive late. Moreover, this talk of a ‘secret crush’ is simply baseless nonsense.”
Upon mentioning this, Mother Xia finally found a slightly more comfortable expression. Her demeanor turned cold: “With Shishi’s personality, she doesn’t think highly of anyone.”
Even if they were to call off the engagement, it would absolutely not be because of some ‘secret crush’!
She was simply spoiled.
Wen Jiao’s eyes suddenly brightened. Zheng He, standing beside her, noticed this and sighed.
Xia Shishi semi-crouched down and rubbed her cheek against Wen Jiao’s hand: “So don’t listen to these people talking nonsense. What do they understand? They’re clearly just envious because we are so well-matched.”
Father Xia cleared his throat a few times, signaling his daughter to show some restraint.
Wen Jiao looked at Xia Shishi several times. The young girl before her was so lively and vibrant. If this were acting, her performance was incredibly good.
Even if it was just acting, Wen Jiao was willing to be fooled.
She slowly revealed a smile, not very pronounced, but those who knew her would understand her meaning.
The matter was settled.
The engagement banquet would proceed as scheduled.
Xia Shishi also began to smile. The corners of her lips curled up high; it was a genuine, heartfelt smile. After smiling, she didn’t forget to stand up and apologize to the guests: “I was too emotional last night, so I went to bed very late and overslept.”
Whether they believed her or not, Xia Shishi believed it herself, and she cared more about whether Wen Jiao believed it.
Taking a sneaky glance, Xia Shishi felt like crying again.
Wen Jiao, a few years from now, would be even thinner than she was now. The thought that it was due to the stress and worry caused by her actions filled Xia Shishi’s heart with endless apologies.
Yet, she dared not say it, fearing that if Wen Jiao knew, she would no longer like her.
How could she have been so ungrateful, even if her mind had been clouded by the plot’s influence?
Countless people couldn’t even manage to get a distant glance from Wen Jiao, yet she had actually despised her.
Xia Shishi turned around, secretly sniffed, and fought back the tears.
It didn’t matter even if she was seen; she could explain it as being overwhelmed with happiness. Yes, Heaven was willing to give her a chance to break free from the plot, to return to Wen Jiao’s side. How could she not be happy?
She was utterly delighted, truly.
Fu Yunhan frowned, standing rigidly where he was.
What was going on? How was this different from what he had anticipated?
The plan was to disrupt the wedding, cause a rift between the Xia and Wen families, and create an opportunity for him to exploit?
Fu Yunhan looked at Zhou Xiaojiang beside him and, taking advantage of no one paying attention, led her into a corner. Xia Shishi noticed this.
She desperately wanted to quietly follow them to eavesdrop on whatever these two were plotting, but she was worried about leaving Wen Jiao alone here. Thus, she frowned and instinctively bit her lip.
Unbeknownst to her, Wen Jiao had been watching Xia Shishi the entire time and didn’t miss any of her small actions.
Wen Jiao lowered her eyes to look at her own hands. This was the first time Xia Shishi had been close to her since she had become an adult.
Ever since another person appeared beside Fu Yunhan, Xia Shishi’s emotions had become easily agitated. Sometimes, Wen Jiao herself found her unfamiliar.
However, when Xia Shishi was alone, she was still the little girl Wen Jiao was familiar with.
A thought that made her feel uneasy arose in Wen Jiao’s mind, especially when she saw Xia Shishi’s eyes following Fu Yunhan’s retreating back.
She remembered the words she had heard before. When she suggested marrying Xia Shishi, Xia Shishi had cried and choked out: “I don’t want to marry, let alone marry a woman. She can’t even stand up. How is she supposed to take care of me?”
Wen Jiao suddenly pressed her hand against her chest, and her breathing began to sting.
Zheng He, who was next to her, cried out in alarm: “What’s wrong? Yesterday’s check-up showed very good condition!”
He was about to approach when Wen Jiao stopped him with a look.
Zheng He’s hand was already halfway extended and suddenly became stuck between advancing and retreating. He was baffled. It would be understandable if Xia Shishi causing a scene about calling off the engagement had stimulated her heart, but things were fine just a moment ago?
Wen Jiao gasped for air. She closed her eyes, intending to wait for the episode to pass, only to hear Xia Shishi’s anxious voice: “My dear, what’s wrong? My dear, please be alright!”
Wen Jiao gritted her teeth, forcing herself not to listen to Xia Shishi’s voice.
The more she listened, the more bitter her heart felt.
Her palm was empty; she couldn’t grasp anything, even though Xia Shishi was right beside her.
She couldn’t stand up, only sit helplessly in her wheelchair, enduring the pain that was overly familiar and unavoidable for over a decade.
The banquet hall was lively, but Wen Jiao’s hand suddenly began to ache.
All at once, a soft, warm hand slipped into her palm. Wen Jiao opened her eyes in a daze. The worry on Xia Shishi’s face before her did not seem to be fake.
Xia Shishi was so nervous she was starting to sweat. She hadn’t paid enough attention to Wen Jiao and now didn’t know what was happening.
In her panic, she glared at Zheng He: “Aren’t you her private doctor? Are you just going to stand there and watch? You’ll be responsible if something happens!”
Zheng He cursed inwardly. Sure enough, he disliked this young girl. Considering she was worrying about Wen Jiao, Zheng He decided not to argue with her for now, so he pushed Wen Jiao’s wheelchair, intending to take her to the back.
Xia Shishi naturally wanted to follow, but Mother Xia grabbed her arm: “Why are you following them?”
Xia Shishi: “We’re getting married, of course, I have to follow.”
Mother Xia: “…”
This was truly odd.
Looking at her daughter’s self-righteous tone and her attempt to struggle free, Mother Xia was filled with questions, but she still said, “The Wen family has people to look after her. If both of you leave, who is this engagement banquet for?”
Nonsense, of course, it was for her and Wen Jiao. Xia Shishi was momentarily stunned, then understood Mother Xia’s meaning.
Assuming she and Wen Jiao were married, she would be the Wen Madam, and the social interactions would require her to receive the guests.
It was truly inappropriate to leave the arriving guests unattended and act like a little girl. But, but she was genuinely worried about Wen Jiao’s condition.
Was her rebirth having a negative impact on Wen Jiao?
Xia Shishi stood in place, forcing herself to calm down.
Wen Jiao was wheeled into a quiet room, and Zheng He began to examine her.
The room did not have a full set of instruments, but fortunately, Zheng He had extensive experience, so it didn’t baffle him.
Wen Jiao’s gaze involuntarily fell on the door. Xia Shishi had not followed.
