After My Flash Marriage with the Sick Beauty, I Reached the Pinnacle of My Life - Chapter 10
The room was genuinely quiet, the incessant drip-drip-drip of the instruments was jarring.
It was as if they were reminding the two women that the countdown was nearing its end.
Xia Shishi stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock. On the bed, Wen Jiao’s expression was somewhat wooden. After a while, the software notification sound chimed again—the assistant had sent a document to Wen Jiao.
Xia Shishi watched, wide-eyed, as Wen Jiao raised her hands, with their slender, pearlescent fingers, and placed them on the keyboard.
She just stared blankly, thinking about the words Wen Jiao had just spoken.
How could this be? A good person like you should live to be a hundred.
Soon, Xia Shishi smiled forlornly, because in the original ending, the fate of both Wen Jiao and herself was not good. The idea of a good person living a long life was nothing short of a joke, a bitter irony for them both.
Xia Shishi was very unwilling; she almost gritted her teeth and said, “Jiao jiao, the ending can be changed.”
Wen Jiao’s calm, placid gaze momentarily left her work to look at Xia Shishi. She thought to herself that just this one glance would be enough.
However, her eyes could not tear themselves away.
Xia Shishi’s expression betrayed her struggle, and she emphasized every single word before repeating herself: “The ending will change, you don’t need to think so much. Think more about happy things.”
What were happy things?
Having this young woman by her side at all times—even if Xia Shishi’s attention wasn’t focused on her—as long as she could keep watching her smile, Wen Jiao felt it was enough happiness.
Xia Shishi’s smile was truly beautiful, like an exquisite, translucent glass lamp.
The light would refract off her, illuminating Wen Jiao from all directions, shining brightly into the dark recesses of her heart.
Even a person who was usually without joy or sorrow would be influenced by Xia Shishi’s smile.
Wen Jiao couldn’t remember the first time she saw Xia Shishi, only that when she finally came to her senses, she couldn’t let go of her.
Wen Jiao frowned seriously, beginning to feel irritated and restless.
She didn’t want to be a selfish person and keep Xia Shishi confined by her side, so could Xia Shishi please stop saying such things that gave her unnecessary hope?
She had already agreed to Mrs. Xia’s request to break off the engagement, so why did Xia Shishi still run over here?
A hint of resentment involuntarily rose in Wen Jiao’s heart. She pursed her lips, forcing herself to look away and deal with her work.
Xia Shishi seemed unaware of this subtle change in Wen Jiao, and she tried hard to formulate what she wanted to say: “Jiao jiao, believe me, I will make your ending different. I will also stay with you forever. We can go to islands suitable for vacation, enjoy the sunshine and the beach. We can also go to dense forests, where there are blooming flowers and various lakes… Jiao jiao, you will take me, won’t you? Don’t worry, I will push your wheelchair even when we are old.”
Xia Shishi’s hand moved toward the center of the bed, touching the raised part of the duvet, confirming it was Wen Jiao’s legs underneath.
She added, “Do you know about cyberpunk? Mechanical legs are so cool.”
Just think more about these things.
Xia Shishi really couldn’t bear to look into Wen Jiao’s clear, detached, black-and-white eyes.
They were devoid of warmth and human vitality.
It made Xia Shishi’s entire heart tremble, almost making her doubt if Wen Jiao truly loved her.
But once that thought arose, Xia Shishi became panicked and afraid. What would she do without Wen Jiao’s love?
She would never be able to smile again; her world would become completely dark and meaningless.
Therefore, Wen Jiao had to love her.
Xia Shishi absolutely had to go to those places with Wen Jiao.
After speaking, Xia Shishi quieted down and genuinely stopped disturbing Wen Jiao. Perhaps she also needed some time to think.
Only when Wen Jiao needed water or needed to move would Xia Shishi stand up to help. She was genuinely trying her best to take good care of Wen Jiao. Every time Xia Shishi made a movement, Wen Jiao remained silent.
Wen Jiao just quietly used her beautiful eyes, trying to imprint Xia Shishi’s image onto her entire being.
When Wen Jiao was in a meeting, Xia Shishi huddled on the sofa, playing a matching game on mute.
This seemed to be the most challenging day of work for Wen Jiao. She had to resist being distracted by Xia Shishi while simultaneously trying to figure out what was going on with her.
In the afternoon, Zheng He came again. He was quite surprised to see Xia Shishi still there: “You didn’t run away after just one glance?”
Xia Shishi wore a cold expression, wanting to say it was none of his business, but after glancing at Wen Jiao, she had to lower her voice: “I like Jiao jiao’s room.”
“Jiao jiao…” Zheng He had known Wen Jiao for a decade or two and had never heard anyone call her that.
Curiously, he repeated the name after Xia Shishi, only to be met with her angry gaze.
“That’s rude,” Zheng He reprimanded coolly. “Miss Wen Jiao is older than you; you should call her ‘Jie’ (Older Sister).”
“We are married; there’s nothing wrong with using a nickname,” Xia Shishi didn’t object to calling her ‘Jie,’ but she didn’t want Zheng He to stop her from calling her Jiao jiao.
“You aren’t married yet, only engaged,” Zheng He laughed. He didn’t know that Wen Jiao had already discussed breaking off the engagement with Mrs. Xia; if he had, he would probably be laughing even harder.
Since he didn’t know, and since they were in front of Wen Jiao, he didn’t appear overly hostile toward Xia Shishi. He knew that Wen Jiao would be biased toward her to the core, anyway.
To avoid embarrassing himself, Zheng He kept his comments brief.
“We need to give Wen Jiao a full body check-up soon, so you shouldn’t stay here and get in the way.” Zheng He walked over to the instruments and then said to Wen Jiao, “Your heart rate is very unstable.”
Wen Jiao: “…”
Wen Jiao: “Mhm.”
Her heart was like a trampoline.
Sometimes it would lie still, too lazy to move, and sometimes, because she took one look too many at Xia Shishi, it would joyfully bounce up, jumping higher and higher.
Wen Jiao expended immense self-control to make her heart rate recover and then continued to work… But this couldn’t go on; she would still steal glances at Xia Shishi.
She also had to be careful not to make eye contact with Xia Shishi.
Wen Jiao avoided looking at the pitiful Xia Shishi who desperately wanted to stay: “Proceed with the check-up.”
She definitely wanted to live a few more years now.
Xia Shishi blinked her eyes and sighed helplessly: “Alright, for the sake of my wife’s health, I’ll stop bothering you for now.”
Xia Shishi grabbed her small bag and walked out of the room, her back looking utterly desolate.
Wen Jiao watched her, but just as the other doctors entered the room and brushed past Xia Shishi, she lowered her gaze. Coincidentally, Xia Shishi turned her head at that moment, noticed Wen Jiao wasn’t looking at her, and her mood sank even lower.
“She’s gone,” Zheng He tutted.
“Tell the assistant to come in.” Wen Jiao ignored him. A look of scrutiny surfaced in her eyes; she wanted to find out exactly what was going on.
Yesterday could be excused, but today, Xia Shishi had been under her nose since the morning, yet she couldn’t figure out what had happened.
Could it have something to do with Fu Yunhan and the others?
Wen Jiao’s expression suddenly darkened.
Zheng He noticed Wen Jiao’s thoughts and agreed, “A sudden drastic change in a person is often the result of some kind of stimulus. Maybe we should take her for a check-up too. Should we contact the Xia couple?”
Wen Jiao thought for a moment and nodded.
Anything concerning Xia Shishi could not be taken lightly.
She could not bear any severe consequences.
If it were possible, Wen Jiao squeezed her hands tightly, her palms slightly damp. She truly wanted to be with Xia Shishi under the sun, enjoying the comfort of the breeze, and experiencing an “unconventional” ending.
Everyone had fantasies, and her fantasy was Xia Shishi.
All it took was a simple sentence from the young woman.
How pathetic.
