After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 14
“Xia, what are you muttering to yourself?” Du Ruoxin asked again.
Lin Xia regained her composure and gently placed the report back where it belonged. “It is nothing,” she said dispassionately. “I just thought this project was somewhat interesting.”
Du Ruoxin raised an eyebrow, looking slightly unconvinced. “Is that so? Did I misjudge it then?” She reached out to take the report and look at it again, but Lin Xia stopped her.
“It is fine. It is not an important project. Let us go to dinner.”
“Alright!” Du Ruoxin cheered up instantly. She stood and took Lin Xia’s arm. “It is a rare treat to have the Queen of Lin treat me to a grand meal. I have to show my appreciation, do I not?”
Her voice was full of obvious excitement, exuding a blend of mature charm and girlish whimsy that differed greatly from her usual decisive demeanor at the office. Lin Xia remarked casually, “I treat you to good food often enough. Is one meal really worth this much excitement?”
As they walked out together, Du Ruoxin looked at Lin Xia’s profile with a gaze that was infatuated and devoted. “Yes, but it still feels special. I would be even happier if you took me out for good food every day.”
Lin Xia’s calm eyes flickered for a moment before returning to their usual stillness. When they reached the hallway, Lin Xia said, “Ruoxin, go wait for me in the car. I need to go back to the office for a moment.”
Du Ruoxin gently shook Lin Xia’s arm with a rare, coquettish air. “Xia, let me go with you.”
“No need. Go downstairs and wait for me.”
Her tone was calm but left no room for argument. Du Ruoxin suppressed her reluctance and gave her a soft, understanding smile. “Okay, I will wait for you in the car then. Do not rush; I am not hungry yet.”
“Mhm,” Lin Xia nodded and turned back into the Chairman’s office.
The moment the door closed, her aura turned sharp and her expression darkened. She immediately dialed a number on her private phone. “Investigate Xiao-Mo International Trade Company Limited and its legal representative immediately. Within twenty-four hours, I want to know the history of this company and the detailed background of the representative from birth to the present day.”
Xiao Lou and Mo Qinghan returned to the dormitory together. Instead of going to her own room, Mo Qinghan followed Xiao Lou inside.
It was around nine o’clock in the evening. Most students were studying in the study rooms or the library, or they were out on dates. Consequently, the other three roommates were out, leaving only the kitten in the room. Seeing Xiao Lou enter, the little creature let out a meow, jumped out of its bed, and rushed over to weave between her legs.
“Oh, Little Gray, are you hungry?” Mo Qinghan immediately knelt down to play with the kitten.
Xiao Lou opened the box of cat food, poured some into the bowl, added fresh water, and then began cleaning the litter box. The kitten immediately ran to the bowl and began eating greedily, making soft growling noises as it chewed.
Mo Qinghan remarked, “It looks starving. I remember you left plenty of food before we left. It really has quite an appetite.”
Xiao Lou worked efficiently, quickly finishing the cleaning and taking the waste outside. When she returned, she opened all the windows and the door for ventilation. “It is a stray cat, after all. It is natural for it to be greedy. It is a good thing I only left a limited amount of food, or it definitely would have overeaten.”
While stroking the cat’s head, Mo Qinghan looked at her and said, “Lou, keeping a kitten in the dorm is always inconvenient. Now that I have started the company, I will be very busy after classes and might even have to handle business meetings personally. Why do we not rent a small courtyard together? It would be close to school, and we could take proper care of Little Gray. What do you think?”
Xiao Lou was washing her hands in the bathroom. Hearing this, she smiled and replied, “You do not need to worry about that. That junior, Wu Yi, said today that she wants to take the cat home. She seemed very sincere, so I agreed.”
Mo Qinghan was startled. “Junior Wu? Which Junior Wu?”
After washing up, Xiao Lou stepped out and took a towel to dry her hands. “Wu Yi, the tutoring student from before.”
Mo Qinghan’s expression changed. She stood up immediately, walked over to Xiao Lou, and spoke urgently, “Lou, why are you still associating with her?”
Xiao Lou froze, asking in confusion, “What is wrong?”
Mo Qinghan looked pained. She bit her lip, then released it, her tone growing displeased. “She is a girl from a wealthy family and is naturally hedonistic. She is from a completely different world than ours. You have such a pure nature; you should not be associating with people like that. It is better to cut ties cleanly.”
Xiao Lou frowned but said nothing. Mo Qinghan studied her expression, but Xiao Lou remained stoic, making it impossible to read her emotions. Feeling a dull ache in her heart, Mo Qinghan took a half-step closer and quietly grasped Xiao Lou’s wrist.
“Lou, I truly consider you my best friend. I just want you to be okay, really.”
Her tone was exceptionally emotional. Her bright, attractive eyes sparkled with sincere and earnest light, filled with a deep sense of protection and care. Although Xiao Lou was a woman of few words, she was sensitive to the sincerity of others. Touched by the sentiment, she said, “Do not worry. I have not been seeing her excessively.”
Knowing that Xiao Lou never told a lie, Mo Qinghan felt slightly relieved. She took Xiao Lou’s arm and looked at her deeply. “Mhm, that is good. I really do not want you to get into trouble or meet the wrong kind of people.”
Xiao Lou felt a sense of stagnation in her heart. She frowned again and withdrew her arm. “Qinghan, we do not know everything about her. It is not right to judge someone so rashly.”
Seeing that Xiao Lou did not agree with her, Mo Qinghan felt stifled. She was desperate to stop her from getting closer to Wu Yi. She said righteously, “Lou, I am not talking nonsense. Think about it. Senior Liu Wenjing and the other two seniors would not speak ill of someone for no reason. They all agreed that this student is stubborn, arrogant, and has bullied many tutors. That cannot be fake. She must be putting on an act in front of you. Do not be fooled.”
Xiao Lou’s elegant brows furrowed. She could not reconcile the dazed, adorable Wu Yi from lunch with the arrogant student Mo Qinghan described. Seeing Xiao Lou’s silence, Mo Qinghan became even more anxious to discredit Wu Yi. “Lou, everything I am saying is true. I would never lie to you. This student has poor character and is not worthy of your company. Please do not contact her anymore, okay?”
She locked her eyes onto Xiao Lou’s, her expression full of desperation. Being stared at like that, Xiao Lou felt a wave of invisible pressure and instinctively took a step back. Her gaze grew a bit distant. “Qinghan, I will judge for myself what is right and wrong. Thank you for your concern.”
Mo Qinghan felt a crushing disappointment. She felt things were slipping out of her control. Usually, she and Xiao Lou got along so harmoniously; whenever she made a request, Xiao Lou would silently do everything for her, even if she did not say anything sentimental. Why was it becoming like this?
Massive resentment and intense sadness surged in her heart. Mo Qinghan seemed to lose control. She rushed forward and grabbed both of Xiao Lou’s hands. “Lou, promise me! I am doing this for your own good, really!”
Her voice was incredibly urgent. Her eyes were fixed on Xiao Lou with a frantic expression, and she gripped Xiao Lou’s hands so hard it was painful. Xiao Lou was shocked and, unable to handle the intensity, she forcefully pulled her hands away.
“Student Mo, do not be like this.” Her tone was very serious and carried a clear sense of distance.
Mo Qinghan finally snapped out of it. She stared blankly at Xiao Lou’s cold, distant expression and realized her behavior had caused repulsion. Panic-stricken and feeling aggrieved, her eyes turned red. “Lou, I was just worried about you. Do not be angry. I will stop talking about it.”
Xiao Lou was the type of person who responded to firmness with firmness and gentleness with gentleness. Hearing this, her attitude softened. “Mhm, I know you mean well. I will protect myself. It is getting late and I need to practice my calligraphy. Go back to your dorm and get some rest.”
Hearing that she was being sent away, Mo Qinghan felt even more wronged. She took a quiet step closer and tentatively shook Xiao Lou’s arm. “Lou, I was just worried earlier. I did not mean to pressure you. Please do not be angry with me, okay?”
She used a soft, pleading tone while shaking Xiao Lou’s arm. Xiao Lou had always been a quiet and cool person; she had only been at university for a month and had only made two friends, Yu Pingping and Mo Qinghan. She did not want to have a falling out with her friends. Seeing her acting so apologetic, she felt a bit embarrassed. “I am not angry, it is just…”
Mo Qinghan watched her expectantly. Xiao Lou thought for a moment and said carefully, “It is just that I am not used to you speaking that way. I do not think friends should be so aggressive with each other.”
Upon hearing the word friends, Mo Qinghan’s eyes showed a flash of disappointment, but she then smiled. She took Xiao Lou’s arm again and said tenderly, “Then I will not speak like that anymore. Do not be distant with me, okay?” She looked up at Xiao Lou with a beaming, gentle smile.
Xiao Lou hesitated for a moment, then nodded. Mo Qinghan became happy instantly and held her arm tighter. “Lou, you are so good. I was wrong just now. But regarding those hedonistic types, we must stay away from them. I will help you keep an eye out for bad people.”
Xiao Lou sighed inwardly, feeling that her previous words had been wasted. Mo Qinghan still did not see eye to eye with her. She gently withdrew her arm. “I am going to practice my calligraphy now. Why do you not go back to your dorm?”
Mo Qinghan immediately said, “I am not tired. I will stay with you. Watching you practice will help me improve my own writing.”
Xiao Lou said no more. She began to spread out the paper and dip her brush in ink. Mo Qinghan brought over a chair and sat beside her, resting her chin on her hand. Her gaze was focused and tender. When Xiao Lou finished the first page, Mo Qinghan spoke, “Lou, do you have to go home for National Day? Can you stay with me? The company just opened and there is so much to do. I really need you.”
Xiao Lou stopped her brush. “You know my family is in the countryside. National Day coincides with the autumn harvest. My parents are getting older, and as the eldest daughter, I must go back to help.”
Mo Qinghan pouted, then her eyes lit up. “Then I will pay to hire people to harvest the crops for your parents! That way they will not be tired and you will not have to travel back and forth. What do you think?”
Xiao Lou’s expression changed slightly, feeling an uncontrollable sense of resistance. She was about to speak but held back, thinking that Mo Qinghan meant well. She said politely, “That is not necessary. I mainly want to visit them. Even if I do not do any work, my parents are happy just to see me.”
“I see. Your parents will miss you.” Mo Qinghan stuck out her tongue and asked again, “Then will you come back after three days to be with me?”
Xiao Lou replied calmly, “Mhm, I will keep my word.”
She continued her practice. Mo Qinghan watched her, thinking of her own parents because of their conversation. Her expression turned somewhat somber. After a moment of thought, she suddenly said, “Lou, I told my parents that you are a good friend I met at university and that you are very kind to me. They are very happy and want to invite you to dinner. Will you go when you get back?”
Xiao Lou, who was not good at social situations, replied, “It is just mutual help between classmates; it is nothing much. Please tell your parents not to go to any trouble.”
Mo Qinghan’s eyes dimmed. “We are more than just classmates.”
Xiao Lou focused on her writing and did not answer. Feeling unsatisfied, Mo Qinghan leaned over and poked her in the waist. Xiao Lou was very ticklish; the poke made her instinctively flinch, and her brush slipped, ruining the character.
Mo Qinghan felt a bit guilty and stuck out her tongue. “I am sorry, I did not mean it. But I really feel we are not just ordinary classmates; we are the best of friends.”
Xiao Lou frowned slightly, feeling she could not practice well with Mo Qinghan there. She put down her brush. “Dinner is really not necessary. It is late; go back to your dorm. You still need to shower and get ready.”
Mo Qinghan looked at her with a pout, unwilling to leave. Then, her eyes twinkled. “Then promise me one thing, and I will go back to your dorm right now.”
Xiao Lou looked at her. Mo Qinghan said, “You are going to give the cat to that student, right? I think that is a good idea. Keeping a cat in the dorm is hard. I am free tomorrow at noon. I will deliver it for you.”
