After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 11
Wu Yi retreated two steps into the shadows, lowering the brim of her hat as she went. As the night grew deeper and the shadows of the trees thickened, the air became quite cold. She only emerged from the darkness once the others had walked out of sight.
The vehicle carried her through the bustling city. The soundproof glass blocked out the roar of the crowds, yet it could not hide the two figures walking side by side through the teeming streets, searching for a place to eat.
Back at home, Lin Xia took charge and hosted a banquet to welcome Su Lianxin back. Wu Yi invited Qi Qing to join them. The four of them sat together eating and drinking, while the conversation consisted entirely of childhood stories. Wu Yi smiled, listened, and kept them company, yet she felt as if a piece of her heart was missing.
The gathering lasted until after nine o’clock. Su Lianxin was happily intoxicated, so Wu Yi helped her bathe and stayed to sleep in her room. Despite having drunk some sobriety soup, Su Lianxin was still dazed. She held onto Wu Yi and refused to let go, mumbling incessantly, “My precious baby, Mom is back. I will stay with you forever now. I will take you to school, spend your birthdays with you, and take you shopping for pretty dresses.”
“When you left this afternoon, Mom wanted to follow you to school so badly, but I was afraid you would be angry.”
Amidst her mother’s murmuring, Wu Yi stared at the ceiling in a daze for a long while. Suddenly, she opened her social media and posted a new update:
“Lou-Lou, I am so happy today. Mom is back.”
Only after posting it did the ache in her heart feel a little better.
The next day at school, Wang Xianya and Nangong Jin returned the homework books while sporting dark circles under their eyes. They said pleasingly, “Miss Yi, I stayed up all night. Look how beautifully it is done; it is a hundred times better than my own homework.”
Wu Yi offered a few casual words of praise before sending them away. She casually tossed the homework they had finished into her drawer and took out the set she had brought herself to hand in. She only made them do the homework because she did not want them bothering her; naturally, she had no intention of actually using it.
When school let out at noon, the English test papers were returned. Wu Yi took one glance at hers and her lips immediately curled upward. Without a second thought, she snapped a photo and sent it with a caption:
“Student Xiao, look at my English test score from yesterday (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧”
She looked over her message several times before reluctantly putting her phone away, intending to go home and have lunch with Su Lianxin. Suddenly, she heard a notification chime. Wu Yi froze for a moment, then scrambled to check her phone. Her eyes widened.
“Not bad. Please keep it up, Student Wu. 加油 (Keep going).”
Her smile brightened instantly. Her fingers flew across the keyboard as if possessed. In her excitement, she made several typos on the small keypad. She deleted and retyped, editing it over and over, until finally, she sent out a single short sentence:
“It is a perfect score. Is there a little red flower reward for me?”
After sending it, she began refreshing the screen repeatedly. She started to feel a bit regretful, wondering if she was acting too forward and if Lou-Lou would be put off. Just as she was feeling anxious, a second message arrived.
“Sending you a little red flower. Keep up the hard work.”
This time, she could not suppress her laughter. Her fingers clattered against the screen:
“Thank you! We have a Chinese mock exam coming up soon and I am a bit worried. Can I come find you tonight to ask for some guidance?”
After sending this, there was no reply for a good while.
“Miss Yi, the Madam is waiting for you to return for lunch,” the driver said, knocking on the classroom door. Wu Yi finally snapped out of it. She thought to herself, Is she busy tonight and just feels too bad to reject me? Remembering how, in her past life, Xiao Lou would merely knit her brows and purse her lips in silent protest even when being bullied, Wu Yi’s heart stung as if pricked by a needle. Not wanting to make things difficult for her even in the slightest, Wu Yi quickly started typing to withdraw her request. Right then, a new message popped up in the chat:
“I have plans tonight. If it is urgent, Student Wu, you can come over now. I am at the West Gate General Teaching Building for lunch. By the way, add me on WeChat; it will be more convenient.”
Wu Yi was overjoyed and immediately called Su Lianxin to explain. Once in the car, she added Xiao Lou on WeChat right away.
“Has Student Xiao eaten lunch yet? I am passing by the West Gate; should I bring you something?”
“It is fine, go ahead and eat. I am eating at the cafeteria now.”
“Okay.”
Wu Yi had the driver stop at the West Gate. She waited in the car for fifteen minutes before heading out alone toward the teaching building. She had only climbed a few steps when a voice called out from behind, “Student Wu?”
Wu Yi turned around in pleasant surprise to see Xiao Lou and Yu Pingping walking up together. She stopped and glanced at Yu Pingping. “Is this your classmate?”
“Yes, my classmate Yu Pingping.”
Yu Pingping sized Wu Yi up. She saw a girl in a light purple ankle-length dress, standing tall and graceful, radiant and beautiful, yet not at all overbearing. Yu Pingping’s eyes lit up. She suddenly leaned in to whisper in Xiao Lou’s ear, “Monitor, when did you meet such a pretty junior? Spill the beans.”
Xiao Lou felt a bit helpless. “She is the tutoring student Senior Liu Wenjing introduced last time,” she explained briefly.
Yu Pingping looked Wu Yi over a few more times and said, “My monitor is a great person and her grades are top-tier. If you really want to learn, you cannot go wrong asking her for help, just do not let her hard work go to waste.”
Xiao Lou felt helpless once again, but Wu Yi quickly promised, “Senior Pingping is right. I came to ask Senior Xiao for guidance because I truly want to learn.”
As the three of them headed upstairs, Wu Yi asked, “Student Xiao, where is Senior Mo? Is she not with you?”
Yu Pingping replied, “Her? She has been acting mysterious lately, vanishing the second class is over. Who knows who she is off dating.”
Xiao Lou said, “Xiao Han has something to deal with and asked me to help her tonight. Do not go guessing blindly.”
Yu Pingping curled her lip but said nothing. Wu Yi thought to herself, So, she is helping Mo Qinghan tonight.
When they reached the study room, Yu Pingping said, “Keep your voices down when you are teaching; do not wake me up.” She took her bag and headed for a corner in the very back row.
Wu Yi felt a bit anxious. “Should we find a classroom with fewer people? I do not want to disturb Senior Yu’s rest.”
Xiao Lou smiled. “It is fine. We will just speak softly.”
She led Wu Yi to a corner in the front row. Wu Yi quickly spread out the Chinese mock exam papers she had taken this semester along with her class notes, asking Xiao Lou to take a look. Xiao Lou browsed through them seriously and quickly identified her problem areas. She pointed to the deductions on the exam paper while explaining, “Actually, I think your answers for modern prose reading comprehension are concise and rarely lose points. Your essays are also quite accurate to the prompt with clear themes. Points were likely deducted because your viewpoints are a bit too unconventional. Your main weaknesses are a lack of understanding in classical poetry and prose, and your handwriting is a bit messy, which is not great for grading.”
She kept her voice low, but fearing Wu Yi might not hear her, she leaned in very close. A few strands of dark hair slid off her shoulder, brushing between their cheeks and fluttering back and forth. Wu Yi had been listening very intently at first, but she gradually began to catch the faint, elegant scent unique to a girl, a clean, pleasant fragrance of body wash and soap. Her heart rate began to accelerate uncontrollably. She sat there frozen, not daring to move an inch.
Xiao Lou was entirely unaware, continuing her low-voiced explanation with focus. Wu Yi’s palms began to sweat, and she felt her face start to burn. Her heart was thumping rhythmically. In a panic, she suddenly reached out and grabbed the water cup on the desk.
“I am thirsty.”
Xiao Lou looked at her with a bit of surprise. Wu Yi then realized she had grabbed Xiao Lou’s water cup; she had not brought one herself. Xiao Lou smiled and stood up. “Sorry, I forgot about that. I will go get some water for you.”
Now the tips of Wu Yi’s ears were burning too. Once Xiao Lou left the classroom, she quietly set the cup down and hurried to find a tissue to wipe her forehead and neck. She took a few deep breaths, and only then did her heartbeat settle down.
Xiao Lou returned with a paper cup and smiled at her. “The water I just got is a bit hot. If you do not mind, I will add some of the warm water from my cup.”
Wu Yi nodded quickly. “I do not mind, of course I do not mind.”
Seeing how nervous she was, Xiao Lou’s smile widened. Usually, it was others who felt awkward or flustered around her; she had never seen anyone so tense in her presence. She handed over the mixed water. Wu Yi took it, and when her gaze met Xiao Lou’s smiling eyes, her heart began to race again. She took the water and drank quickly. She completely forgot about maintaining a ladylike image; she just wanted to suppress that maddening heartbeat. Unexpectedly, she drank too fast and began to choke.
Wu Yi stared blankly at the scene before her: the table was covered in droplets, and the exam papers and notebooks were dotted with water. Water was still dripping from the tip of her nose. Her face turned bright red in an instant. She wished she could disappear into the floor. Xiao Lou was also stunned for a moment before quickly pulling out some tissues and handing them to her. She then used tissues to wipe down the books.
Wu Yi buried her face in the tissues, not daring to look up at all. She only heard the voice beside her, tinged with suppressed laughter, “Student Wu, your self-care skills are a bit lacking. If you go to university and live in a dorm, I imagine you will have a hard time.”
Wu Yi’s face turned even redder, and she whispered, “Student Xiao, I know how to fold blankets and things like that.”
Xiao Lou laughed lightly. Seeing her embarrassment, she changed the subject. “Alright, let us continue. Let us look at the second question.”
Wu Yi slowly looked up. Once she could see the papers on the desk, she did not dare move a muscle. She kept her neck at that exact angle while listening to Xiao Lou’s explanation. However, after a few minutes, her neck felt as stiff and numb as if a martial arts master had struck her pressure points. She had no choice but to lift her head a little. Sensing that Xiao Lou had not noticed, she lifted it a bit more.
Suddenly, she bumped right into Xiao Lou’s forehead as the other girl leaned in. I am doomed! She now really did not dare look up. She could not even imagine what Xiao Lou would say. Xiao Lou rubbed her forehead and smiled, simply thinking her nervousness was strangely adorable. She moved back a little and increased the speed of her explanation.
The awkwardness slowly dissipated, and the sweat on Wu Yi’s palms gradually cooled. “I suggest that from now on, you do one intensive classical poetry reading comprehension exercise every two days. You should also copy an essay or write a reading note every day. Slow down your writing speed first, and once it is less messy, you can speed up again.”
A sudden, unharmonious sound rang out. Both of them froze at the same time and looked at each other. Xiao Lou looked at her in surprise, while Wu Yi was so ashamed she wanted to cry. Her image was completely gone.
Xiao Lou asked her, “You did not eat?”
Wu Yi had to nod. She was afraid that if she ate, she would feel drowsy and fall asleep during the explanation. So she had intentionally refused the lunch box her security detail bought for her and only drank half a bottle of energy water. She had not expected her stomach to growl so loudly, nor had she expected Xiao Lou to hear it.
“Why didn’t you eat?”
Seeing that Xiao Lou was asking seriously, Wu Yi had to give a half-truth. “Lunch break is short to begin with, and Student Xiao made time in her busy schedule to tutor me. I did not want to waste it. Anyway, it will not be too late to eat after I have finished asking for help.”
Xiao Lou looked at her for a few moments, feeling a bit curious. She asked, “Looking at your papers and notes, your foundation is not bad. You must have been slack before. Is there something motivating you to work so hard now?”
Wu Yi looked up suddenly. Meeting Xiao Lou’s clear gaze, she spoke slowly: “I want to follow in someone’s footsteps.”
