- Chapter 56 - Reunion (Part 2)
Since Xu Jingqiu had spoken, Wen Banxia didn’t press further. After exchanging a few more pleasantries, mostly about how Xu Jingqiu was doing lately, the conversation drifted.
Xu Jingqiu couldn’t help but notice that Wen Banxia seemed to be glaring subtly at Chen Yulan, who, in turn, appeared completely unfazed and even shot back a defiant look. Eventually, Xu Jingqiu couldn’t resist asking quietly, “When did you two meet?”
Both Chen Yulan and Wen Banxia fell silent at once. After a brief, covert scuffle, Wen Banxia stepped forward to explain, prying Chen Yulan’s hand from her waist as she did so.
After a moment’s thought, Wen Banxia decided to start from the beginning: “It all began when the Fate-Scribe of the Demon Realm approached us. At that time, for some reason, we were constantly in a dazed state. It wasn’t until the Fate-Scribe broke the ‘shackles’ on us that we fully realized the terrible things we had done.”
Another senior? Xu Jingqiu was taken aback and pressed further, “Was that Fate-Scribe named Ling?”
Wen Banxia hadn’t expected Xu Jingqiu to name the person so accurately. It seemed they were acquainted, which explained how that person had managed to find them so precisely: “Yes, it seems you know her too.”
“She is my senior. We come from the same place.”
Wen Banxia and Chen Yulan exchanged a glance and nodded simultaneously: “That makes sense. Otherwise, an outsider like her wouldn’t have been so concerned about the fate of this world. It was the Fate-Scribe who introduced us. Since then, we’ve been in contact secretly, trying to uncover what Penglai was up to while playing along with Ai Yanran’s act.”
“Then, after your ‘death,’ the Fate-Scribe connected us with Yin Ruolan, and together we joined forces to eliminate Ai Yanran.”
At this point, Wen Banxia crossed her arms and shot a glance at Chen Yulan: “After that, I continued to stay undercover near Ai Yanran, while Yin Ruolan remained obsessed with resurrecting you. As for this one,” she gestured toward Chen Yulan, “who knows what she’s been up to.”
Chen Yulan merely shrugged, offering no explanation.
Afterward, Wen Banxia asked a few more questions, mostly about Xu Jingqiu’s current situation, while Xu Jingqiu inquired about the state of the world, gaining a deeper understanding from Wen Banxia.
As dusk began to fall, Wen Banxia decided it was time to leave. Before departing, she suddenly asked, “Will it be very dangerous this time?”
Xu Jingqiu took a sip of tea and slowly shook her head: “Not exactly. The Heavenly Order has rarely intervened in recent battles, right? That’s because the current enemies are ones the Demon Realm and the Monster Realm can handle on their own. Even that ‘Heavenly Dao’ isn’t much of a threat in itself. The real issue is that this world doesn’t have just one Outer God, nor just one threat. My main concern lies with the forces behind it all.”
Wen Banxia looked at her without saying anything. After a long silence, she asked, “Are you confident?”
Xu Jingqiu nodded seriously: “Yes. In the end, all obstacles will be cleared. I promise.”
“Of course, we believe in you,” Wen Banxia reached out and ruffled Xu Jingqiu’s hair, letting out a soft sigh. “But truthfully, more than the world, we just want you to be safe.”
But Xu Jingqiu didn’t respond to Wen Banxia immediately, which made both Wen Banxia and Chen Yulan’s hearts tighten even though Xu Jingqiu later smiled and reassured them.
A person’s first reaction never lies.
After Wen Banxia left, Chen Yulan grabbed Xu Jingqiu and asked again, “Are you really sure everything will be fine in the end?”
Xu Jingqiu patted her chest and gave a thumbs-up. “When have I ever been wrong? It’ll be fine, trust me.”
Chen Yulan still didn’t believe her after all, someone’s past mistakes were hard to ignore. “Then why do you seem so down?”
At this, Xu Jingqiu wilted again. “The cat.”
Oh, so it was about the cat. That was a bit tricky. Under Xu Jingqiu’s hopeful gaze, Chen Yulan had no choice but to brace herself and say, “I’ve already sent people to look for it. It’ll be back tomorrow.”
Relieved by the promise, Xu Jingqiu secretly turned off a tracker in her pocket.
Seeing that Xu Jingqiu was about to head back to her room, Chen Yulan took a deep breath and finally asked, “Have you seen Yin Ruolan?”
Xu Jingqiu froze mid-step, her back turned to Chen Yulan, her expression hidden.
“…No,” Xu Jingqiu replied before returning to her room and closing the door firmly.
After that, perhaps because some sensitive topics had been brought up, Chen Yulan didn’t seek out Xu Jingqiu again.
That night, as Xu Jingqiu was adjusting her tablet, there was a sudden knock at the door. Instinctively, she glanced at the tracker she had made just yesterday, the red dot was nearby.
Xu Jingqiu put away the tracker and opened the window, but there was nothing outside.
Just as she was about to close the window, a hand wedged itself in the gap, stopping her.
Wen Banxia stood up and placed a finger to her lips. “Shh, don’t make a sound. I sneaked in. For some reason, the entire Joyous Union Sect is on high alert right now. It wasn’t easy to get in.”
Xu Jingqiu nodded. “You’ve worked hard. So, why are you here?”
“Do you want to leave this place? You must know, right? Chen Yulan is essentially keeping you under house arrest, not to mention Ji Yiliu is always watching you,” Wen Banxia said.
Xu Jingqiu was well aware of these things after all, it was part of her plan. “Not for now. I have other plans. I’ll leave once I’m done. If I want to go, no one can stop me.”
Wen Banxia didn’t press further. She knew that once Xu Jingqiu made a decision, no one could change her mind. “Alright. If anything happens, be sure to contact me. Do what you can, don’t push yourself too hard.”
Since there was nothing more to persuade, Wen Banxia prepared to leave. But this time, Xu Jingqiu stopped her. “Over the past year, have you encountered any strange people?”
“Strange people?” Wen Banxia thought for a moment. “There was one, a man named Qu Tao.”
Why him again? Xu Jingqiu frowned. She hadn’t expected him to still be causing trouble it seemed he had received significant help. “What did he say to you?”
“He claimed this world is a novel, and he’s the male lead, while I’m the third female lead or something like that,” Wen Banxia said, also frowning in disgust. “He even said he would become the master of this world and that not just me, but others would eventually belong to him.”
Xu Jingqiu hadn’t expected this person to still believe in the Outer God’s nonsense. “So?”
“I beat him up and drove him away,” Wen Banxia said lightly, noticing that Xu Jingqiu seemed to be paying attention to this person. “Um, did I do something wrong?”
Xu Jingqiu shook her head. “No, not at all. Well done.”
Wen Banxia breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. “Really? I thought so too. Alright, since you don’t plan on leaving, you should go rest now. It’s already very late.”
Xu Jingqiu nodded, watching as Wen Banxia closed the window. “Goodnight, sister.”
Wen Banxia froze for a moment, then smiled happily. “Mm, goodnight, little sister.”
The next day, Xu Jingqiu felt a familiar sensation and, upon opening her eyes, sure enough, the calico cat had appeared.
Xu Jingqiu picked up the calico cat, held it in her arms, and gave it a few strokes, feeling her spirits lift once more.
Pushing the door open, she found that Chen Yulan was no longer there. After hesitating for a moment, she asked Jingli, who was back on duty at the door, “Where is Chen Yulan?”
Jingli bowed respectfully and replied, “In response, Miss Xu, the Saintess has gone to meet a guest.”
A guest? “May I know who this guest is?”
Jingli nodded. Chen Yulan had instructed her to tell Xu Jingqiu if she asked. “Qu Tao.”
Him again. Xu Jingqiu chuckled softly. “Ah, has he finally come?”
