- Chapter 50 - Cause and Effect
When Xu Jingqiu emerged, she appeared completely unfazed. Seeing this, Yin Ruolan visibly relaxed and, before Xu Jingqiu noticed them, signaled to Ye Shuran that she intended to leave first.
Ye Shuran’s impression of Yin Ruolan had shifted somewhat at least she wasn’t as hostile as before. Surprised by the request, she asked, “Aren’t you going to say goodbye to her?”
Yin Ruolan offered a faint, bitter smile and shook her head. She stood up and patted Ye Shuran’s shoulder, adding a bit of pressure. “No, I don’t think she wants to see me right now. Since she wants some time apart, I won’t appear before her voluntarily. But until I return, take good care of her.”
Ye Shuran winced at the force of the pat, instinctively leaning away. “Of course, this time I’ll stay by her side no matter what. Why are you so strong?”
“You’re just too delicate,” Yin Ruolan replied quietly, withdrawing her hand without further comment. She left with a light remark, leaving Ye Shuran grumbling to herself.
By the time Xu Jingqiu approached, Yin Ruolan was already gone. “What’s wrong with you?” Xu Jingqiu asked.
Ye Shuran huffed indignantly, “It’s all because of that. Wait, are you done? Everything okay?”
Clearly changing the subject, Xu Jingqiu didn’t press and went along with it. “It went smoothly, at least. I’ll head back to the car first. Once everything’s ready, let’s go back.”
Ye Shuran pulled out her phone to check the remaining tasks. Seeing nothing urgent, she nodded in agreement and handed the keys to Xu Jingqiu. “Alright, I need to brief Fang Yu on a few things. You can rest in the car.”
Xu Jingqiu took the keys, her professional instincts kicking in as she inspected them. The batteries had been replaced with spirit stones. After weighing them in her hand, she said, “Okay, I’ll wait in the car then,” and turned to leave. Her steps seemed a bit unsteady to Ye Shuran.
Tsk, still putting up a tough front. Ye Shuran patted Bai Yi, who understood immediately and returned to her original size, staying close to Xu Jingqiu so she could lean on her if needed.
Now, what’s next? Oh right, reviewing the work. Ye Shuran pulled out her phone again to check the documents.
The biggest issue in the demon realm had been the contamination from [Madness Calamity], but now that it was sealed, along with the demons subdued and most of the rebel forces eliminated, the resistance army no longer existed. The only remaining major threat was Penglai.
After instructing Fang Yu to assist Yin Ruolan in cleaning up the contamination, Ye Shuran gathered some people to prepare for the return journey. There was no need for such a large presence here anymore.
When she reached the convoy, she saw through the car window that Xu Jingqiu had already fallen asleep in the passenger seat, with Xiao Bai curled up on her lap. There was no sign of Xiao Bai’s whereabouts.
Ye Shuran tried to open the car door as quietly as possible, but even so, Xu Jingqiu stirred awake.
“All settled?” Xu Jingqiu asked, rubbing her eyes.
“Yes, there’s nothing left for us here. We’re heading back to Tianzhi headquarters. By the way, you haven’t seen our base yet!” Ye Shuran replied as she started the engine.
Xu Jingqiu nodded without much enthusiasm. Ye Shuran glanced at her with concern, and Bai Yi, still resting on Xu Jingqiu’s lap, shook her head slightly.
Another sigh escaped Ye Shuran as she switched back to autopilot and asked, “Still thinking about what happened before?”
This time, Xu Jingqiu didn’t hide it. “Just remembered some things from when we sealed it.”
“Do you want to be with her now? There’s still a chance to turn back,” Ye Shuran asked.
Xu Jingqiu was taken aback for a moment but ultimately shook her head. “No, I think it’s better if we spend some time apart. Do you know what happened?”
Ye Shuran replied, “If you’re talking about the ‘Heavenly Dao,’ I did find out some things. It’s quite lamentable, really.”
Originally, they could have had bright futures, but due to the interference and control of the Heavenly Dao, the relentless pursuit of the Yin and Ai families who flouted the law, and the fickleness of the world, things ended up as they did.
When Xu Jingqiu heard the name “Heavenly Dao,” she opened her eyes and looked at Ye Shuran in disbelief. “You know this is related to It?”
“Yeah, more or less. I heard a bit from Yin Ruolan and found out some things on my own,” Ye Shuran said awkwardly, scratching her head. She had always tried to avoid any connection with these outer gods in front of Xu Jingqiu, but this time she had taken the initiative to learn about them.
Xu Jingqiu, however, showed no reaction. After a moment of thought, she said something inexplicable: “After I go back to rest, I’ll be away for a while. Please take care of things during that time.”
Hearing this, Ye Shuran rolled her eyes. “As if you’ve ever handled Heavenly Order’s affairs.”
“When I return, you can go back to avoid getting entangled in the causality here,” Xu Jingqiu added.
Ye Shuran was stunned, wondering if she had misheard. “Huh?”
“Whether it’s outer gods or ‘Kings’ like us, we ultimately rely on causality or faith to exert our full power or influence other matters. Although we ‘Kings’ mostly rely on our own strength, there’s no denying that faith and causality enhance our abilities. The same goes for outer gods.”
“This ‘Heavenly Dao’ was severely injured by me before, so It needs to rely on causality to establish a foothold in this world and control it. This causality primarily lies with Penglai, and part of it originally resided with Yin Ruolan.”
Ye Shuran sensed something amiss and grabbed Xu Jingqiu’s wrist. “Originally?”
Xu Jingqiu nodded calmly. “Yes, originally. Now it’s transferred to me or more accurately, returned to me.”
Ye Shuran began to understand and slowly released her grip. “So, from the very beginning. Its target was you? I feel a bit confused now.”
“Then don’t dwell on it. If you don’t want to get involved, what you know now is enough.”
After that, Xu Jingqiu slept for the rest of the journey. Ye Shuran didn’t ask anything else and only woke her up when they were almost at Heavenly Order.
When Xu Jingqiu opened her eyes, she saw rows of towering skyscrapers: …
“What is this?” Xu Jingqiu asked with some difficulty.
Ye Shuran proudly lifted her chin. “Our base. What do you think? Does it feel like home?”
Xu Jingqiu: “Yeah.”
Bai Yi had never seen such architecture before. She stood on Xu Jinqiu’s lap with her hind paws, curiously looking out, and once they entered the city, she pressed herself against the carriage window to observe the streets and the pedestrians.
Very good. Ye Shuran and her group of modern people had assimilated quite a number of individuals remarkably well at least, most of the people on the street were cultivators. Xu Jinqiu silently withdrew her gaze and gave Ye Shuran a thumbs-up.
Ye Shuran had no intention of taking them on a tour. Instead, she brought Xu Jinqiu directly to the prepared residence. As soon as they entered the room, Xu Jinqiu collapsed onto the bed, unwilling to move.
Seeing this, Ye Shuran picked up the struggling Bai Yi and said, “Come on, let me take you for a walk. You’ve never seen buildings like these, right?”
Bai Yi immediately stopped struggling and allowed herself to be carried obediently by Ye Shuran.
Back to the moment they parted, in the Demon Realm.
Yin Ruolan hadn’t actually left completely at that time. Instead, she stayed within sight of Xu Jinqiu, watching until the vehicle disappeared from view before departing.
She knew Xu Jinqiu’s true plan, even Xiao Bai had been left behind. Her task now was to guard the Demon Realm and buy more time and opportunities.
With Xiao Bai, Liu Ruichu, and Fang Yu in the Demon Palace, things had mostly calmed down. Seizing the opportunity, Yin Ruolan set off alone for the Demon Realm.
Xu Jinqiu had given her the key to the portal when they parted, so entering now was effortless. The demons all recognized Yin Ruolan’s appearance and quickly summoned Bai Xuan.
Bai Xuan first bowed and said, “Greetings, Demon Lord.” Then, cautiously, he asked, “May I ask about my daughter.”
“She is with Xiao Qiu and is doing well,” Yin Ruolan replied.
Bai Xuan breathed a sigh of relief but then grew puzzled. “Then, why has the Demon Lord come alone at this time.”
“I wish to relocate the Demon Realm next to the Demon Realm and unite the demons and the demon race. The Heavenly Venerable already knows of the demon race’s existence. Although the secret realm can protect you for a while, it cannot protect you forever. Of course, this matter depends on your decision. I am merely making a suggestion,” Yin Ruolan explained.
Bai Xuan did not immediately agree or refuse. Instead, he asked warily, “Does the Lord intend to wage war against Penglai?”
“Even if we don’t seek them out, they will come for us. Whether it’s the Demon Realm or the demon race, in the eyes of Penglai, we are all thorns in their side, aren’t we?”
Bai Xuan fell silent. Of course, he knew this, but could the demon race truly match Penglai’s strength?
Yin Ruolan sensed Bai Xuan’s hesitation and took the initiative to say, “What I need from you is your karma. As for the fighting, the Demon Realm and Tian Zhi will handle it.”
Karma! This meant they were going to war against the gods. A battle of this magnitude seemed beyond the demon race’s capabilities.
But if they succeeded, the demon race would be able to walk openly under the sun.
It all came down to a gamble. To gamble might resolve all problems; not to gamble would bring temporary peace. Whether to choose eternity or a moment Bai Xuan quickly made his decision.
“How does the Lord plan to move the Demon Realm?” Bai Xuan relented.
Yin Ruolan looked in the direction of the secret realm. “I now possess the key to this secret realm and know how to control it. Moving the Demon Realm is feasible.”
Bai Xuan nodded. “I will assist the Lord in completing this task. During this time, I will need to relocate all our clansmen into the secret realm. Afterward, the structures in the Demon Realm will likely need to be rebuilt.”
“This is a small matter,” Yin Ruolan said. “The demon realm can now build a city overnight. However, you’d better make it clear to all of them, the battle may begin before things have even settled down.”
“Now,” Yin Ruolan took out the key that Xu Jingqiu had once given her, a black crystal slightly smaller than the core, “let’s go. Time is running short.”
