After My Death, the Female Lead Breaks the Heartless Path - Chapter 36
As soon as these words were spoken, the three people aside from Xu Jingqiu were stunned.
Someone had entered this place?
“Wasn’t it said that only Senior possesses the key to this place? Shouldn’t only those holding the key be able to enter? How could someone else have come in?” It took Ye Shuran a while to find her voice again.
Could it be that Ling had entered? Impossible, she wasn’t the type to have nothing better to do. “It can’t be Lady Siming,” Yin Ruolan was the first to shake her head and refute the idea. “She wouldn’t do such a thing, nor does she have any reason to.”
Xu Jingqiu nodded in agreement. “Indeed, if it were Senior, the Outer Gods here wouldn’t be alive. She despises those [Outer Gods]. If it weren’t for fear of the world collapsing, the Outer Gods here would never have been allowed to exist.”
Seeing the two of them look over at her simultaneously, Ye Shuran shrank her neck and gave an awkward smile. “Well, of course, I know that. But aside from Senior, no one else should be able to enter, right? So who could have come in?”
“Actually, it’s not entirely true that no one else can enter. At the very least, I can come in without a key,” Xu Jingqiu said, hands on her hips, with a hint of pride.
Ye Shuran couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “So what do we do now? Do we continue further in?”
Xu Jingqiu nodded, pulling out three talismans. Using her special ability, she transformed them into small devices, handing them to Ye Shuran and Yin Ruolan before hanging one around Bai Yi’s neck. “Since we can confirm who is sealed here and someone is up to no good, wear these for now.”
Ye Shuran examined the small device curiously. “Is this the Outer God suppressor that only high-level investigators are allowed to carry? I thought non-high-level personnel weren’t permitted to have them?”
Xu Jingqiu replied, “This is a lower-tier version. Its resistance to Outer Gods is significantly reduced, and it might affect your abilities to some extent. So, if something happens, don’t rush to the front stay behind.”
The sealed area appeared bleak and desolate. A few lonely lamps were spaced far apart, and several pillars stood on the ground, wrapped in chains. The chains connected to arrays on the ground, leading to unknown places.
This was the location where [Mad Calamity] was sealed, yet it was unexpectedly quiet. Ye Shuran hadn’t participated much in battles against Outer Gods and thus didn’t know much about them. She instinctively assumed that sealed gods either couldn’t speak or disdained speaking to mortals.
Xu Jingqiu was also observing the sealed Outer God. Generally, with [Mad Calamity]’s temperament, it would never remain so calm after the seal weakened and it awakened. Yet, it was impossible to say it hadn’t awakened a faint, scrutinizing gaze lingered in the air, as if confirming something.
Xu Jingqiu chuckled lightly, crossing her arms with an air of nonchalance. “We all know now. Are you still going to pretend? It’s too obvious.”
As soon as Xu Jingqiu finished speaking, the ground began to tremble. The chains rattled violently, pulling the pillars taut. Ye Shuran instinctively hugged Bai Yi, genuinely afraid that cracks would appear on them. At the same time, Yin Ruolan drew her sword, watching the array warily.
The little white tiger was being held a bit too tightly, but it only let out a soft cry and didn’t struggle to break free. She was genuinely worried that if she ran away, Ye Shuran might become too anxious, potentially jeopardizing their mission. After all, this human was so fragile.
Xu Jingqiu patted Yin Ruolan, signaling her to calm down first, before turning her attention to the magic array. The array was glowing continuously, and something inside was thrashing violently. After a moment, it gradually settled down, as if whatever was inside had quieted.
“I have seen you! A hundred years ago! It was you, that meddlesome human! How dare you oppose me!” A frenzied voice echoed in the minds of everyone present, booming and seductive, stirring their blood to a boil.
Sensing the undisguised malice, the red light in Yin Ruolan’s eyes flickered wildly. Her demonic sword erupted with a crimson glow as she fixed her gaze intently on the array, poised to strike. If that so-called Outer God made even the slightest move, she would charge forward without hesitation.
Just then, the device in her hand vibrated slightly, emitting a faint electric current that suddenly cleared her thoughts.
So it still has an effect after all? Xu Jingqiu activated the partner contract once again, channeling her energy to help Yin Ruolan suppress the surging demonic energy. Then, she stepped forward, shielding both the humans and the tiger behind her, blocking all the oppressive pressure and seductive whispers. “What do you mean?”
[Mad Calamity] sneered, “What are you pretending for? Wasn’t it your doing a hundred years ago? If not for you, this world would already be under my control! I said, the day we meet again will be your last!”
“She has never been here before,” Yin Ruolan said coldly. “It was the demon race that sealed you here. Don’t mistake your target.”
[Mad Calamity] laughed scornfully. “Do you think someone like you could suppress me? If not for those two outsiders, this place would have long been my domain!”
Xu Jingqiu was taken aback. Two? If she was one of them from a hundred years ago, then the other must have assisted the first Demon Lord in defeating this Outer God. After all, [Mad Calamity] was relatively more difficult to deal with than [Heaven’s Law], especially in direct confrontation.
Xu Jingqiu waved a hand, feigning regret as she deliberately provoked, while her other hand gestured subtly behind her back. Yin Ruolan understood and pulled Ye Shuran a few steps back.
“But now, this place has been almost entirely eroded by [Heaven’s Law]. Even if you could break free, what could you do? You’re nothing but a remnant soul.”
The ground shook even more violently, clearly indicating [Mad Calamity]’s fury. True to its name, this Outer God was easily provoked and prone to losing its rationality.
“That thing? A mere wretch dares to compare itself to me? If not for this seal, I would devour it in an instant!” The tremors intensified, even reaching the demon city above.
Xu Jingqiu chuckled lightly, further inciting it. “But at least it’s still free to roam outside, while you’re stuck here, raging helplessly. How pitiful~”
“Hey! Don’t you dare compare me to that brat who only knows how to hide inside humans!” The originally imposing voice instantly shattered, turning into a rough, agitated dialect. “What can that thing even do? If it weren’t for hiding inside humans who could be crushed with a single hand, what waves could it possibly stir?”
“If I could get out, I’d slap that thing to death in an instant!”
“Oh, it seems you don’t know much either. What a waste of time,” Xu Jingqiu instantly withdrew her smile, looking somewhat disdainful. “No, perhaps not entirely a waste. At least I’ve confirmed you can’t escape for now. But just to be safe.”
Xu Jingqiu removed her bracelet, which transformed into a long sword. She walked to the center of the magic circle and thrust the sword straight down. Instantly, the circle blazed with light, and as a roar echoed, the tremors gradually subsided.
“Just to be safe, let’s add another layer of sealing.”
“Just you wait. A hundred years ago, I broke free, and I can do it again now. Your triumph won’t last long.”
In the blink of an eye, the once-ferocious Outer God fell silent. Yin Ruolan glanced at the magic circle, ensuring it wouldn’t interfere, before stepping forward. “Are you alright?”
Xu Jingqiu shook her head, putting away the Heavenly Rule Ruler. “I’m fine. I just didn’t get much useful information. But we can’t delay here any longer. We need to restore the seal as soon as possible, or simply destroy it. Let’s discuss more upstairs. We shouldn’t stay here too long.”
Once upstairs, Xu Jingqiu locked the door again and snapped her fingers. The suppressors on the two women and the tiger turned into paper cranes, flew out, and were incinerated by the torch.
“What we can confirm now is that another Outer God, or some entity of similar strength, helped [Mad Calamity] break free from this seal. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been able to escape to this extent on its own,” Xu Jingqiu stated bluntly, then turned to Ye Shuran. “Even though it’s just a remnant soul and sealed away, how did it feel facing an Outer God for the first time?”
Ye Shuran remained silent for a moment before replying, “Even though I knew it couldn’t cause much trouble, it still felt incredibly dangerous. For a moment, it was as if my thoughts weren’t my own. Wait!” She looked at Xu Jingqiu warily. “Why are you asking me this? You’re not planning to push me into this kind of work in the future, are you? Seriously?”
Xu Jingqiu merely shrugged, offering no explanation. “You’ll find out later. How things turn out will depend on what the other six have to say.”
Ye Shuran: “…”
How did working overtime lead to getting involved in such dangerous work?
Yin Ruolan had been quiet ever since [Mad Calamity] mentioned having seen Xu Jingqiu before. Now that the two had finished talking, she spoke up again. “So, have you always been doing this kind of work? Fighting these kinds of beings?”
Xu Jingqiu glanced at Yin Ruolan and nodded somewhat indifferently. “The main enemies of the Seven Sovereigns are these Outer Gods. For now, we’re the only ones who can contend with such entities. It’s our duty.”
Yin Ruolan asked, “When did you start doing this kind of work? Have you fought many of these Outer Gods?”
Xu Jingqiu thought for a moment before answering, “Since I woke up, I suppose? I don’t really know how many I’ve fought. I’m not particularly skilled in combat. Most of the time, I’m actually taking shots from the rear. Why are you suddenly asking about this?”
Facing Xu Jingqiu’s puzzled and probing gaze, Yin Ruolan loosened her clenched fist slightly and forced a faint smile. “It’s nothing. I just noticed you seem very familiar and skilled with all this. Are you staying here now because of these Outer Gods? Is it just out of duty?”
Xu Jingqiu looked Yin Ruolan up and down, unable to understand why a trip downstairs would prompt such concern. But she couldn’t think of any deeper reason, so she cut straight to the point: “Yes, for now, that’s the case. Only after resolving all these outsiders who disrupt the world’s timeline can, I plan my next steps. As for the reason?”
“I’ve long forgotten. For me now, it’s just a duty. Since I’m here, I need to take responsibility for it.”
