After My Death, the Female Lead Breaks the Heartless Path - Chapter 33
Ye Shuran blinked in confusion, taking a moment to process before realizing that Xu Jingqiu was referring to an Outer God a new deity, not the currently crippled Heavenly Dao.
Good grief! This world even has Outer Gods? Ye Shuran irritably ran her fingers through her hair, then slumped in defeat.
She should have guessed. What kind of “easy job with few capable candidates” could possibly be a good deal? It was clearly a task no one else wanted! Blame her naivety for actually believing the bureau chief’s nonsense, thinking this small world would be a simple assignment.
And what happened? Not only did she come here to clean up Xu Jingqiu’s mess, but this place also seemed to have some inexplicable allure, attracting not just one but multiple Outer Gods.
Ye Shuran let out a long sigh, instinctively wanting to seek comfort from her friend as she always had. But when she turned, Yin Ruolan immediately shielded Xu Jingqiu behind her, staring at Ye Shuran with guarded hostility.
Ye Shuran: “…”
Was this person really not the same scumbag from the original world? The protective stance was identical! Back when Xu Jingqiu was dating that Yin Ruolan, the latter would always watch her with this exact mix of vigilance and animosity though that was partly Ye Shuran’s own fault for jokingly claiming she was pursuing Xu Jingqiu too, earning Yin Ruolan’s lasting resentment until lengthy explanations finally smoothed things over.
But this time she hadn’t done anything!
Ye Shuran cast a pleading look toward Xu Jingqiu, who was already growing drowsy again in
“Wait a moment!” Ye Shuran raised her hand high. “Can someone please explain what’s going on? The moment I arrived, everyone started fighting. Isn’t anyone going to clarify?”
She was genuinely confused. She had been sleeping peacefully when she suddenly received a message summoning her here and instructing her to prepare to restrain someone. If it were just an ordinary capture, that would be one thing, but the person had gone completely berserk, and it even involved an Outer God? She was utterly baffled!
It was only then that Xu Jingqiu remembered she hadn’t explained the situation to Ye Shuran. She briefly summarized what had just happened. Upon hearing about the consciousness manipulation, Ye Shuran signaled to the investigators who had come with her, and they approached the demons with purifiers in hand.
The demons instinctively looked toward Yin Ruolan. After receiving her nod of approval, they allowed the investigators to scan them with the strange devices.
After the follow-up procedures were completed, Xu Jingqiu shared her speculation: “It’s highly likely that there’s an Outer God in the Demon Realm, and this Outer God seems to specialize in mental corruption. Earlier, the auras of these demons were unusually erratic, as if they were being manipulated or had suddenly surged like they were under the influence of drugs.”
An Outer God in the Demon Realm? Yin Ruolan pondered this and suddenly recalled what the former Demon Sovereign had told her before his death: there was a forbidden area beneath the Demon Palace, and she must never enter, as it was extremely dangerous. It was there that he had been injured and corrupted.
Thinking of this, Yin Ruolan said, “There is a forbidden area in the Demon Realm where a highly dangerous entity is sealed. Perhaps that is the Outer God you mentioned.”
So that was it? Xu Jingqiu nodded and said, “Then we should hurry back. The seal has likely been compromised, but the effects aren’t severe yet. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be manipulating these dissatisfied individuals living on the outskirts but directly inciting Heiyun City. Clearly, it doesn’t have that capability yet.”
With this conclusion, it was imperative to return immediately. Coincidentally, the treatment for the demons had just concluded, so Yin Ruolan ordered everyone to prepare to depart straight for Heiyun City.
Yin Ruolan called for her horse and helped Xu Jingqiu onto it. Seeing this, the other demons also mounted their horses, while those whose horses had been killed paired up with others. The members of Tian Zhi, on the other hand, boarded their vehicles in small groups and followed the demon procession.
The demons were largely unfamiliar with such vehicles and couldn’t help but glance at them during the journey. Yin Ruolan and Liu Ruichu, however, paid no attention, one focused on leading the way, while the other stayed close to protect them.
Ye Shuran had arrived on a motorcycle, as she was prone to motion sickness. Initially, she had wanted to chat with Xu Jingqiu during the journey, perhaps about her ex-girlfriend. This Yin Ruolan looked exactly like that person, so there had to be more to the story. However, with everyone guarding Xu Jingqiu so closely, she couldn’t find an opportunity to speak.
Moreover, Xu Jingqiu seemed to be in an unusual state. She had fallen asleep in Yin Ruolan’s arms despite the bumpy ride, which was clearly not normal. Could it be another side effect of the treatment?
With no one to ask, Ye Shuran kept her thoughts to herself, planning to question Xu Jingqiu thoroughly once they arrived and she woke up. She suspected Xu Jingqiu had forgotten most of what happened; otherwise, she would never have agreed to become Yin Ruolan’s girlfriend.
The remainder of the journey wasn’t long, and they arrived quickly after hurrying. A cold gust of wind blew toward them, jolting Xu Jingqiu awake and causing her to sneeze loudly.
“So, cold!” Xu Jingqiu tightened her cloak and looked toward the main city. She hadn’t expected it to be snowing there, with all the buildings blanketed in white. Gazing into the distance, she saw that the cities far away were also covered in snow.
No wonder it was so cold. With snow falling like this, how could it not be?
Yin Ruolan’s expression was grim as well. Holding Xu Jingqiu close, she urged the horse to gallop faster toward Heiyun City. The closer they got, the colder it became.
“Has it ever snowed in the demon realm’s main city before? I heard the weather here had been altered. I thought only the borderlands of the demon realm were like this.” Ye Shuran sneezed and put on the clothes she had worn when they first arrived.
While wandering around the city earlier, she had heard that a demon lord had changed the weather in the core areas of the demon realm, making it more habitable. So why had it reverted now?
Yin Ruolan shook her head. “It hasn’t snowed in the demon realm’s main city for a very long time.”
Their return naturally caught the attention of the city guard. Recognizing Yin Ruolan, the captain hurried over to report, “Your Majesty, the environment in the demon realm’s main city has suddenly changed. Many were unprepared. Not knowing when you would return, Lord Siming ordered us to distribute clothing and supplies. Your Majesty!”
“Well done. Continue distributing them. Send Liu Ruichu to assist Lord Siming and ensure everyone in the main city can survive this sudden change,” Yin Ruolan instructed. “Have there been any movements from the nearby demons?”
“Reporting to Your Majesty, none. However, the suddenness of this change has caused panic, as we haven’t been able to determine the cause.”
Yin Ruolan nodded. “Very well. Carry on with your duties. I will personally investigate the cause of this anomaly.”
The captain saluted and left, while the other demons returned to their posts. Tian Zhi was taken to be accommodated, and Ye Shuran accompanied the two back to the demon palace.
Inside the palace, warm stoves had already been lit, filling the space with a cozy warmth. Yin Ruolan finally set Xu Jingqiu down. As soon as her feet touched the ground, Xiao Bai pounced into her arms, baring its teeth at the white tiger behind them. The white tiger shrank in size and perched steadily on Xu Jingqiu’s back, provocatively glaring back at Xiao Bai.
Xu Jingqiu sighed helplessly and decided not to take sides, knowing it would only complicate things further.
Meanwhile, Ye Shuran breathed a sigh of relief as she took off her heavy coat. “Ah, I was suffocating in that.”
Xu Jingqiu looked over curiously. “So, you’re afraid of the cold!”
Ye Shuran twitched her lips and rolled her eyes. “We’re both humans, aren’t we? Isn’t it normal to be afraid of the cold? We’re not cultivators.”
Xu Jingqiu’s eyes widened in sudden realization. “Oh~ Right! I forgot about that. No wonder I was the only one freezing.”
Ye Shuran couldn’t resist giving her a light flick on the forehead. “Actually, it’s not like no one attacked this place. Some from Penglai came, disguised as demons, but they happened to run into us. They probably thought attacking us would stir up conflict between the two races, but they didn’t expect Xiao Bai to come pick us up. It swallowed them all in one go.”
At this, Ye Shuran shrugged nonchalantly. “But even if Xiao Bai hadn’t shown up, those people were no match for us anyway. Did they really think we wouldn’t see through their disguise. Wait, you two don’t seem surprised?”
Xu Jingqiu and Yin Ruolan exchanged a glance, and eventually, Xu Jingqiu spoke up, “Ah, we expected this from the start otherwise, we wouldn’t have left Xiao Bai here. But we truly didn’t anticipate you running into them. Did you notice anything unusual about them?”
Ye Shuran thought for a moment before recalling something. “Yes, midway through the fight, they suddenly became agitated just like what you described happening to those demons today.”
