After My Death, I Became a Heartless Madman - Chapter 24
In matters of the heart, the one who comes later is the replacement.
This statement was undoubtedly true, yet Bai Ruowei suddenly found herself unable to untangle the sequence of events. Song Shizhou claimed that Lan Chi had met her first, making Bai Ruowei the one who came later.
So was she implying that she, Bai Ruowei, was Lan Chi’s replacement?
Half of Bai Ruowei’s body went numb. From birth till now, she had never felt this humiliated. She took a deep breath, desperately trying to compose herself, to keep her voice and expression from revealing the terrifying madness within.
“What… did you say?”
“I’ll give you one more chance… say it again.”
Song Shizhou inhaled deeply.
“Miss Bai, Lan Chi and I truly have no relationship.”
Bai Ruowei instinctively smiled.
But Song Shizhou wasn’t finished.
“Lan Chi and I indeed have no relationship. But even without Lan Chi, I will soon have relationships with others. I’ll date, marry, and start a family with someone else. That person won’t be you, because we’ve already broken up.”
Silence fell.
Didn’t Bai Ruowei love betrayal? Didn’t she thrive on endless suspicion? Fine, then Song Shizhou would grant her that wish, she’d spell it out plainly. Song Shizhou didn’t know where this sudden viciousness came from. She wasn’t the type to tear into others; she could laugh off Lu Qi’s backstabbing. Why was it that with Bai Ruowei, she couldn’t hold back anymore?
Because she cared. She had never truly let go of Bai Ruowei in her heart.
Why shouldn’t Bai Ruowei suffer as much as she did?
An eerie silence stretched, one that even Li Ningzhi and Mia couldn’t bear. After what felt like an eternity, Bai Ruowei finally spoke softly.
“Song Shizhou, have you lost your mind?”
Song Shizhou smiled faintly.
“Miss Bai, I’m perfectly sane…”
What came next wasn’t for Mia or Li Ningzhi to hear. She leaned close to Bai Ruowei’s ear, their posture deceptively intimate.
“But I did die for you once.”
How could she blame Bai Ruowei? Accidents like car crashes were unavoidable. Song Shizhou chastised herself inwardly. When had she become so venomous? She should be smiling gently, telling Bai Ruowei it didn’t matter, that though Miss Bai had wronged her terribly in their past life, those things were over now, not worth dwelling on.
Just as she had done with Lu Qi, with Song Lanyi letting them raise the stakes while she deliberately lowered hers.
Yet she couldn’t control it.
She wanted to see Bai Ruowei in pain.
Pain for her sake.
Bai Ruowei felt as if her entire body were burning.
A surge of fury with nowhere to go. No one around her dared to approach.
“Mia, what’s next on our schedule?”
Mia, ever unflappable even after surviving three battles in a single day, checked her notes.
“Hmm… Li Ningzhi booked a flight to the Inner City in two hours. Miss Bai, we should head to the airport now.”
“Change it.”
Bai Ruowei said.
“I’ve changed my mind.”
“Let’s hold a wedding here.”
Song Shizhou froze.
“What?”
The word “wedding” nearly gave Song Shizhou PTSD. A wedding? Whose wedding? What kind of wedding could she and Bai Ruowei possibly have now?
But before she could ask further, Bai Ruowei pushed her into the gallery.
The familiar scene became stifling with Bai Ruowei’s presence. Mia and Li Ningzhi stood guard outside the door, silent as shadows.
Song Shizhou was bewildered. Bai Ruowei had that ability, she prided herself on being emotionally stable, steadier than any capybara, yet Bai Ruowei had a way of throwing everything into chaos, reigniting the darkness she had worked so hard to suppress, making her irritable, resentful, and eager for revenge.
Song Shizhou took a deep breath.
“Xiao Bai, don’t be willful. Changing plans so suddenly will make things difficult for Mia too. Let me say it clearly one more time, we’re over.”
Bai Ruowei suddenly lunged forward, biting her fiercely.
Her kiss was aggrieved, her bite was aggrieved, even the spreading taste of blood was aggrieved.
Miss Bai’s kisses had always been ferocious, even though she was the one beneath.
The kiss was lingering at first, it was almost like tearing into each other, but gradually, it softened into something tender. No matter how much she wanted to deny it, her body’s reaction was undeniable. Song Shizhou grew hotter, the metallic sweetness dizzying, the unforgettable taste of Bai Ruowei making her head spin.
When the violent kiss ended, both their lips were glistening. Bai Ruowei wiped the suggestive wetness from the corner of her mouth, deliberately seductive, these were tricks she had honed on Song Shizhou. She wanted Song Shizhou’s heart to race for her.
Lowering her eyes, she licked the moisture from Song Shizhou’s lips, her words so tender they might as well have been pried open and fed directly into Song Shizhou’s mouth. Would Song Shizhou be enchanted by this docile act and remember her good qualities? She wasn’t entirely without merit! Bai Ruowei thought to herself. She would remember how she had crossed mountains and rivers, endured countless hardships just to find her, didn’t that prove how much she cared?
But Song Shizhou pushed her away.
“Stop this.”
Her expression was cold, unmoved.
“We’ve already broken up.”
Bai Ruowei’s soft lips brushed Song Shizhou’s neck, pleading like a spoiled child. In the struggle, her vulnerable scent gland was exposed.
“Don’t reject me like this.”
If Song Shizhou would just say something sweet, she would let it all go. She would forget everything that happened today, and they could go back to how things were before. Wouldn’t that be better?
A silent tension hung in the air.
But Song Shizhou said, “No.”
She resisted, pushing Bai Ruowei away. Even though Bai Ruowei had humbled herself to this extent, Song Shizhou remained as indifferent as ever.
Miss Bai suddenly let out a deep sigh.
“Song Shizhou, do you really think what you said earlier would provoke me? That I’d be hurt, repentant, heartbroken?”
Bai Ruowei wore a sincere expression, but her beautiful eyes were filled with obsessive madness.
“You went to such lengths to hide here, yet I still found you, didn’t I?”
Song Shizhou froze, a chill creeping down her spine.
“You said I was Lan Chi’s replacement. You said you didn’t love me anymore, that you wanted to be with someone else… If you dared to say it, then you should be prepared to pay the price…”
“Lan Chi said you were smart, but I think you’ve become much more foolish than before.”
“Our little house is gone so you’ll just have to live in Snow Pavilion. And all those letters you wrote me, the paintings you made for me, the things you posted on Weibo, you’ll have to make up for every single one of them.”
Song Shizhou clenched her teeth, utterly stunned.
“You said… you didn’t like any of those things. Weren’t they stupid to you? Why?”
Bai Ruowei trembled, as if heartbroken.
“But they were mine. My treasures. You lost my treasures, so you’ll have to make up for them, bit by bit.”
Song Shizhou shook with anger.
“Calling the things you despised your treasures, Miss Bai,”
“You’re the pitiful one.”
Indeed, Bai Ruowei smiled.
In front of Song Shizhou, who loathed her, hadn’t she always been the most pitiful one?
Their “wedding” began soon after.
The scene was so bizarre that even someone as tolerant as Song Shizhou felt uneasy. Bai Ruowei’s subordinates had prepared a garden walking down a path lined with blooming roses led to a circular stage.
Where would Flying Bird Town have high-end designer wedding dresses? The hastily summoned bridal shop owner had cobbled together a few barely passable gowns, but the entire dress likely couldn’t compare to a single embroidered detail on the one Miss Bai had originally ordered. Song Shizhou’s dress didn’t fit properly, she wore a mermaid-style gown with a thick wool coat draped over it, looking as if she’d borrowed someone else’s clothes.
And in fact, she had.
Where would Flying Bird Town have skilled makeup artists? Especially with such rushed preparations and Song Shizhou’s foul mood, she stared at her reflection, devoid of any bridal joy.
But the moment Bai Ruowei appeared, the entire room fell silent.
She was beautiful.
As breathtaking as ever.
The pristine white veil draped over her, her gaze as resolute as during mission briefings no, even more so. A faint glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes. With just minimal makeup, Bai Ruowei was stunning, no trace left of her earlier tears.
Bai Ruowei tried to kiss her. Song Shizhou pushed her away, but Bai Ruowei pressed forward again, her lips hovering close. Tears shimmered in her eyes, brimming with what seemed like genuine emotion.
In the end, Song Shizhou didn’t let her kiss her lips, so Bai Ruowei stubbornly kissed the back of her hand instead.
Miss Bai closed her eyes reverently, her lips brushing the finger where a ring should have been.
The ring had also been hastily procured Flying Bird Town had no expensive diamond rings, but a gemstone would have to suffice. Amber symbolized pure love, a tiny stone set at the center of the band, delicate and lovely.
But Song Shizhou threw the ring away.
Bai Ruowei’s lashes fluttered. She thought, she was the one who was pathetic.
After the kiss, Bai Ruowei nestled against her chest like a wounded little animal.
Song Shizhou lifted her gaze.
As if she could still be hurt.
She gripped Bai Ruowei’s waist.
“Wasn’t this wedding what Miss Bai begged for? What, not happy?”
Bai Ruowei only smiled.
“Of course I’m happy.”
The officiant began reciting the vows.
“Miss Song Shizhou, do you take Miss Bai Ruowei to be your wife, for better or for worse.”
Before the host could finish speaking, Bai Ruowei snatched the microphone away. She cupped Song Shizhou’s face in her hands, her expression filled with deep affection.
Shizhou tried to break free, but Bai Ruowei’s grip was terrifyingly strong, making it impossible to escape.
“Shizhou, how exactly did you die in your past life?”
Song Shizhou laughed bitterly at her words.
“Did I choose to die? The roads were slippery from snow, I—”
“Then why did you believe what Lu Qi told you?”
“I didn’t believe her. I called you, but you didn’t answer.”
“I didn’t answer.”
“But when I called you later, why didn’t you pick up?”
Song Shizhou was at a loss for words.
“Miss Bai, by then I was already dead, my soul had returned to the underworld. How could you expect a dead person to obey your commands and answer your calls?”
“Is that so?”
Bai Ruowei smiled faintly.
“But even if your soul had returned to the underworld, didn’t I still come to find you?”
“By the banks of the Naihe Bridge, beside the Stone of Three Lives, through countless hardships.”
If possible, the tears Bai Ruowei shed now would surely be of blood.
“Shizhou, didn’t I still come for you?”
Song Shizhou was too stunned to respond.
She’s insane. Everyone’s insane. That was her final thought.
