After My Death, Everyone Repented (Transmigration) - Chapter 63
Before Xie Shaoyun encountered the system, that lifetime felt like a fleeting dream.
Her father was named Xie Cheng, her mother Feng Qianqian, her eldest sister Xie Qingcheng, and her second sister Xie Zangxing.
All the family members remained the same, but in that world, there was no Damei, Xie Guangqi, Jian Qing, or Feng Cinian.
Chi Yi wasn’t a domineering CEO either, she was the founder of a small tech company. Her income wasn’t in the millions, but she was very smart.
In that world, Xie Shaoyun was happy most of the time. Her family loved her, she received a good education, and her career was smooth.
She and her childhood sweetheart grew into love. In 2010, same-sex marriage wasn’t legally recognized in the country.
With their elders’ approval, they registered their marriage in Switzerland.
She had thought she would be happy for the rest of her life.
December 26, 2021, Guang City.
Xie Shaoyun had just returned from a long business trip.
The plane landed, and she was so exhausted she didn’t even want to lift a finger.
Her suitcase bore far more weight than it should have, dragging heavily across the ground, leaving long, deep scratches behind.
After passing through security, Xie Shaoyun called Chi Yi to tell her she had landed.
“You’re busy I’ll just take a cab back,” Xie Shaoyun said.
The other end of the line was noisy, and only by listening carefully could she detect the faint displeasure in Chi Yi’s voice: “After months apart, Little Xie has grown distant from me.”
Calling her “Little Xie.”
Xie Shaoyun raised an eyebrow, shaking off her lethargy, and obediently admitted her mistake: “Alright, if my wife doesn’t come pick me up, I’ll just stand here and wait forever waiting to be claimed.”
“Your claim has arrived.”
Chi Yi’s voice came from behind and to her left. Xie Shaoyun immediately turned around to see Chi Yi standing right behind her.
A pair of silver-rimmed glasses perched on her nose, she must have come straight from the office, dressed in the formal business suit Xie Shaoyun had picked out for her.
The lenses reflected the light, a faint mist obscuring her vision, so Chi Yi casually removed them.
After so many days apart, their eyes met, and both of them felt a little overwhelmed.
Having been together for years, Xie Shaoyun could easily read the faint reproach in Chi Yi’s sharp, peach-blossom eyes.
She had been away too long this time Chi Yi was upset.
“Did you miss me?” Xie Shaoyun moved closer to Chi Yi, taking the initiative to stand by her side.
She reached for Chi Yi’s hand, but Chi Yi turned her face away and asked lightly, “What do you think?”
“I don’t know,” Xie Shaoyun deliberately paused, glancing at Chi Yi, who met her gaze. Xie Shaoyun thought Chi Yi looked beautiful even when she was angry. Leaning in, she whispered by her ear, “I missed you more.”
To prove her words weren’t empty, Xie Shaoyun shamelessly wrapped her arms around Chi Yi, burying her face against her jaw. Her voice laced with exhaustion, she murmured, “I missed you so much, Miss Chi.”
“You’ll have to cut down on business trips from now on.”
The airport was crowded, but Chi Yi let her hold on, unbothered by the onlookers. She even reached into her pocket and hooked an arm around Xie Shaoyun’s neck.
It was an unmistakably sapphic embrace, and only when the stares grew too numerous did they finally pull apart.
Chi Yi went to take the suitcases Xie Shaoyun had brought back two large 32-inch ones. Xie Shaoyun handed her only one.
“Why did you come back with an extra suitcase?” Chi Yi asked.
Xie Shaoyun used her free hand to intertwine their fingers, grinning as she answered, “Clothes, bags, shoes, and perfume all for you.”
“You really ” The tenderness in Chi Yi’s eyes was almost overflowing, making Xie Shaojun’s heart swell with warmth.
The two walked to the parking lot and leaned against the car door, sharing a kiss that mingled their breaths.
Chi Yi threaded her fingers through Xie Shaojun’s hair, her eyes narrowing as she was kissed. When it ended, she gazed at Xie Shaojun for a long moment before saying, “You’ve lost weight.”
“Don’t travel far alone this year,” she said firmly.
Xie Shaojun paused, then lightly nipped at the corner of her lips, her eyes curving into crescents as she agreed.
She added that since the year was almost over, why make such a broad request?
“Be stricter with me don’t let me travel far until next year.”
Chi Yi gave a faint smile and said, “No need.”
“I’ve had my secretary book tickets to Sri Lanka for New Year’s. The flights and hotel are already arranged. Clear three days off, I’ll take you to see the ocean.”
There was no room for negotiation. Xie Shaojun willingly accepted her wife’s domineering attitude, grinning as she agreed.
She tasked Chi Yi with opening the trunk, then hoisted the luggage up and placed it inside.
After arranging it, she went to lift another suitcase when she suddenly heard Chi Yi murmur from behind: “It might make you uncomfortable, but being away from me for too long makes me feel lonely.”
For a moment, Xie Shaojun froze in place. After a while, Chi Yi called her name, and she turned around.
She acknowledged Chi Yi’s criticism, saying, “I haven’t been feeling great either.”
This trip to New York for the art exhibition had been entirely handled by Xie Shaojun, from selecting the venue and designing the exhibition layout to the smallest details like the invitation cards. The payoff wasn’t insignificant; her work had a chance to be shortlisted for the Alexander Lucci Art Prize.
But without Chi Yi by her side, the sense of fulfillment from this work trip had been minimal.
After getting into the car, Xie Shaojun repeated to Chi Yi, “There won’t be a next time.”
Chi Yi didn’t let Xie Shaojun drive. Starting the engine, shifting gears, and pressing the clutch, she steered the car out of the parking lot.
During the drive, a call came in.
Chi Yi answered her secretary informed her of an urgent matter at the company that needed immediate attention.
A long call could be distracting.
Snow was falling, and Xie Shaojun didn’t trust her to multitask.
So she said, “Let me take over.”
Xie Shaojun shooed Chi Yi out of the driver’s seat, steeled herself, and drove them home.
The journey onto the overpass was smooth.
Due to the snow, there were few cars on the road. The four-lane highway was sparsely populated, and Xie Shaojun maintained a steady speed of 40 km/h the entire way.
By all accounts, there should have been no accident.
But that day, Xie Shaojun was involved in a collision.
A truck loaded with raw timber suddenly lost its brakes, swerved across lanes, and crashed through the guardrail, directly into the Audi Xie Shaojun was driving.
The windshield shattered. The heavy truck slammed into the driver’s side, and Chi Yi threw herself over Xie Shaojun, shielding her from the collapsing roof.
But the seat flipped backward, and shards of broken glass flew everywhere, one piercing straight into Xie Shaojun’s heart.
As her vision faded, Xie Shaojun heard Chi Yi’s weak voice calling her: “Puppy”
“Don’t fall asleep”
That night, the surgical lights at Guang City Third Hospital remained on.
Their crimson glow cast the narrow, dim hallway in an eerie chill.
Someone was crying at the door.
Her father, her mother, her eldest sister, her second sister, the entire Xie family, along with Chi Yi’s parents from this world. The man dressed in a suit was Chi Guangbo, and the woman was Liu Wan.
Xie Shaojun lay on the operating table, not entirely unconscious. She could hear the sound of scissors and sutures, and a weak voice spoke close to her ear, saying, “Xie Shaojun.”
“ I’m sorry. Live well for my sake.”
For some reason, an overwhelming sadness surged in Xie Shaojun’s heart.
She thought that if she could just open her eyes, Chi Yi wouldn’t have to say sorry.
Because they were on the same operating table. If Chi Yi felt exhausted and wanted to close her eyes, but because Xie Shaojun lived, Chi Yi would fight harder to survive too.
Xie Shaojun desperately wanted to open her eyes so, so badly but she couldn’t.
Under the glaring lights, hot tears streamed uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes.
Xie Shaojun could hear voices again, though she had no idea how much time had passed.
Doctors were talking nearby.
“Patient in Bed 6, no complications during the day. Admitted due to a car accident, Underwent a heart transplant surgery at 7 PM that night. Post-op vitals stable ”
“Strange, why hasn’t she woken up yet?” someone asked.
“Maybe she doesn’t want to.”
The ICU was quiet except for the hum of machines and the hushed voices of doctors during shift changes. A female doctor spoke with pity to her male colleague, “If she wakes up and learns that her partner’s heart is inside her, living might be more painful than dying.”
“I heard they’ve known each other since childhood sweethearts. Got married right after graduation, stable relationship, successful careers. When the truck’s brakes failed and crashed into them, the other girl didn’t hesitate, she threw herself in front of her. If she had just stayed seated in the passenger side, the injuries wouldn’t have been as severe.”
“Only twenty-five years old. When she realized she wouldn’t make it, she chose to stop treatment and gave her heart to her.”
“Both families have been crying outside for days.”
“No one could accept it. They were both so young.”
On December 26, 2022, Xie Shaojun opened her eyes after lying in a hospital bed for a year.
Feng Qianqian said to her, “Xiao Chi went abroad. Because you were in a coma, a vegetative state, she chose to leave on her own.”
To prove the truth of her words, Feng Qianqian produced a divorce agreement.
Chi Yi’s signature was on it.
Feng Qianqian said, “When you have time, sign it.”
Xie Shaojun traced Chi Yi’s name tenderly, silent, but she slapped away the pen Feng Qianqian offered and gave her a reproachful look.
Feng Qianqian left. The next day, Xie Qingcheng came to see her. On the third day, Xie Zangxing visited the hospital, A month later, Chi Yi’s parents came too.
Everyone said the same thing.
“Chi Yi went abroad for her career. She felt there was no hope waiting for a vegetative patient to wake up, so she gave up on her.”
Xie Shaojun listened quietly and said, “Okay, no need to say more. I understand.”
She accepted Chi Yi’s departure from their marriage with a lazy, indifferent expression, as if nothing were wrong.
Everyone thought Xie Shaojun had been fooled, until one night when Feng Qianqian, staying over to keep her company, woke up in the middle of the night to find Xie Shaojun still awake, scrolling through her phone, searching for something.
Feng Qianqian didn’t disturb her. The next day, while Xie Shaojun was away for a check-up, she pulled out the phone hidden under Xie’s pillow and saw the search history: “How to call a deactivated phone number.”
Xie Shaojun began suffering from sleepless nights. Once her hands regained some strength, she would take out her phone to make calls.
All the calls were to one person. Unable to get through, she started composing text messages. Even though they couldn’t be sent, Xie Shaojun didn’t seem to mind, she sent them every day.
She wrote about trivial things, asking Chi Yi how she was doing, describing the color of the sky that day, or the shape of the nurses’ caps.
Mostly, she pleaded, “Chi Yi, don’t disappear. This joke isn’t funny at all.”
But none of those piled-up messages were ever delivered.
One day, Chi Yi’s number finally connected. Xie Shaojun mustered all her strength to sit up in bed, only for the call to be abruptly cut off. After a while, a reply came through:
“While you were in a coma, I already said goodbye. Don’t call again. I hope we both find peace.”
Xie Shaojun showed no trace of sadness and simply asked, “Why did you make this decision?”
“Because your prolonged coma made me lose hope for our future.”
Days passed, yet Xie Shaojun continued sending texts and making calls.
Feng Qianqian watched her with an indescribable look in her eyes. Meeting her mother’s exhausted gaze, Xie Shaojun whispered, “I’m sorry, Mom.”
“Let me buy you a lipstick.”
The next day, Xie Cheng sat in the hospital room reading a newspaper. Xie Shaojun turned to her father and said, “Dad, I’d like a piece of orange.”
Xie Cheng stood frozen for a long moment before shakily agreeing. He squeezed the juice onto a cotton swab and dabbed it on Xie Shaojun’s lips.
When some of the juice accidentally stained his fingers, Xie Shaojun looked at him apologetically. “I’m sorry, Dad.”
In the following days, she apologized to her eldest sister, her second sister, and everyone who cared for her.
On New Year’s Day 2023, Xie Shaojun struggled to get out of bed, her knees shattered.
She said she wanted to go to Sri Lanka to see the ocean.
Feng Qianqian asked, “How will you get there?”
“I’ll push myself in a wheelchair.”
Feng Qianqian only stared at her in silence before pleading, “Little one, can’t you just stay?”
Xie Shaojun shook her head obediently. “No.”
“Because Chi Yi and I promised to visit Sri Lanka together for New Year’s. We planned it in advance, I can’t break my word.”
Feng Qianqian, barely containing her anguish, interrupted, “Why are you still thinking about her?”
“She abandoned you ”
Xie Shaojun immediately turned, her gaze steady as she met her mother’s eyes.
“Mom,” she said.
“Next time, don’t use Chi Yi’s number to lie to me.”
“Her future and hope, have always been me.”
Chi Yi had told Xie Shaojun to live well, even if it meant smearing her own sincerity and breaking her own heart.
But Xie Shaojun’s entire future and hope had always been Chi Yi.
After that day, Xie Shaojun never mentioned Chi Yi again.
It was as if Chi Yi had never existed in the Xie household. Xie Shaojun remained obedient and filial, spending more time with her parents, responding warmly, even joking when family visited the hospital.
But she lay awake night after night, unable to eat, and on the day her heart showed signs of rejection, a high fever set in, and her body slipped back into a deep coma.
This time, she encountered the System.
Xie Shaoyun had tried very hard to live on in a world without Chi Yi, but for some reason, she found herself thinking of Chi Yi all day long, unable to muster any strength.
She would tell herself that Chi Yi was the kind of person she despised most in this world, someone who lingered in her life like a shadow.
Objectively, Xie Shaoyun reminded herself that this world wasn’t just about lovers, there were family members too. But there was no other way. She couldn’t control herself, couldn’t sleep.
Day after day, she stared blankly at the snow-white ceiling, like a soulless puppet.
The System asked Xie Shaoyun if she had any wishes, if she wanted to open her eyes, wake from the coma, and keep living.
“No,” Xie Shaoyun heard herself answer coldly.
In truth, she had long understood that in a world without Chi Yi, Xie Shaoyun no longer had any wishes.
“Any regret can be undone. As long as you complete the task,” the System said. Even reviving someone else was possible.
Xie Shaoyun thought for a long time, seriously considering bringing Chi Yi back. But what would be the point if the two of them couldn’t live together in this lifetime?
Burdened with the weight of their past love, Chi Yi would be left to live alone, just like Xie Shaoyun, trapped in loneliness and despair.
Chi Yi shouldn’t have to suffer anymore. She shouldn’t have to remember this lifetime.
Xie Shaoyun told the System:
My wish is that in the next life, Xiao Chi will be happy.
