After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 89
The woman was somewhat flustered, but she managed to keep her composure on the surface.
After all, Jian Mo was as sharp as a needle. If given even the slightest opportunity, she would seize the initiative, and there would be no way to wrest it back.
However, while her thoughts were optimistic, reality did not unfold as smoothly as she had imagined even though she believed she had been extremely cautious.
Yet, Jian Mo noticed the woman’s unusual behavior immediately. She had been watching her closely, and when she saw the shift in the woman’s expression, a dark glint flashed swiftly in her eyes.
With a calculated thought, Jian Mo spoke lightly, “So it seems you’re the abandoned pawn. How tragic. After working with Jian Li for so long, she still sees you as nothing more than a disposable piece.”
The woman’s face changed abruptly, and she instinctively snapped, “Shut up!”
She knew that if she let Jian Mo continue, things would spiral into a scenario she didn’t want to see, so she refused to listen.
Yet Jian Mo raised an eyebrow and pressed on quickly, “Why should I shut up? Did I hit the mark? Haven’t you already suspected this yourself? So, would you like to confirm it?”
Her words were like whispers from hell soft, yet dripping with temptation.
The woman desperately told herself not to fall for the trap, but her inherently suspicious nature made it impossible not to overthink.
She couldn’t help but wonder was her partnership with Jian Li really secure? Was Jian Li truly treating her as a disposable pawn? Even if they had agreed to act separately, as Jian Mo had said, wouldn’t this be the perfect opportunity for Jian Li to slip away?
Her thoughts churned violently, her clenched fists tightening until she could barely restrain herself from calling Jian Li to demand answers.
Her gaze bore into Jian Mo, trying to discern something from her expression.
But Jian Mo remained composed from start to finish, her eyes even carrying a faint trace of pity as she looked at her.
The woman’s breathing grew heavier, yet she refused to let Jian Mo’s scheme succeed, leaving her torn in an internal battle.
Her hesitation, however, did not escape Jian Mo’s notice.
Seeing the woman waver, Jian Mo spoke again, leisurely this time, “What a pity. Truly a pity.”
The woman couldn’t hold back. “What are you pitying?”
Jian Mo slowly smiled, her expression almost childlike. “I’m just pitying you because you’re about to be caught.”
The woman shot to her feet. “What did you say?!”
Jian Mo’s smile widened. “Isn’t that right? Haven’t you noticed something off about the atmosphere?”
The woman’s first thought was that nothing was wrong.
After all, this place had been carefully chosen by her. Though it was in a bustling area, it had long been abandoned with no plans for reconstruction, and it was sealed off hardly anyone would come here. Besides…
This place had cost her dearly, and every time she thought about it, she gritted her teeth in hatred. Choosing this location was, in part, an act of revenge.
If not for that mistake back then, Jian Li’s position wouldn’t have been taken by Jian Mo, the project wouldn’t have been halted, and they wouldn’t have suffered such massive losses, let alone the ripple effects that followed.
Because the financial blow had been so severe, it had drastically impacted their subsequent ventures, with many collapsing midway.
If Jian Li had appeared back then, things might have been different. The problem was that Jian Li had been controlled by Jian Mo, and the location was so well-hidden that even if they had wanted to act, they wouldn’t have been able to find it.
The security was top-notch not even a fly could get in.
But, they didn’t actually need to rescue Jian Li. Their alliance had been purely for mutual benefit, and now that the benefits were gone, there was no reason for them to save her.
If Jian Li hadn’t suddenly reappeared, seeking them out to propose a major scheme, they wouldn’t have taken such a risk.
Times had changed. Jian Mo now firmly held control over the Jian Corporation. Even if Jian Li resurfaced, it wouldn’t make much difference, people naturally gravitate toward those who offer the greatest advantage. Under Jian Mo’s leadership, the company had repeatedly achieved new heights, and everyone knew where the real benefits lay.
After the company’s restructuring, all those who had supported Jian Li had been purged. Jian Li truly stood no chance.
That’s why they had initially wanted no part in this mess. But the terms Jian Li offered were too lucrative, and the task itself didn’t seem too difficult. After much deliberation, the woman had decided it was worth the gamble hence the kidnapping.
However, the accident had actually been orchestrated by the woman accompanying Jian Li. After all, Jian Li was still Jian Mo’s mother and didn’t actually want her dead.
But the woman was different. Rumor had it that because of Jian Mo, everything she had painstakingly built had been destroyed. Consumed by hatred, she wished for nothing more than Jian Mo’s death.
But murder was no small matter better to avoid direct involvement if possible. When the woman realized this, she simply went with the flow, waiting at the scene of the crash to ensure Jian Mo was swiftly taken away.
Perhaps Jian Mo was simply fated to survive. Despite the severity of the crash, she had suffered no major injuries and had even managed to save herself. By the time they arrived, Jian Mo had already crawled a considerable distance from the burning vehicle.
The woman had to admit Jian Mo’s resilience but that was all. In any case, things had gone smoothly, and taking Jian Mo away had been effortless.
But now, the woman wasn’t so sure anymore.
If things were really as they seemed, then staying here made her nothing more than a sitting duck!
The urge to flee surged within her, but the sight of Jian Mo filled her with unwillingness.
Jian Mo seemed to read her expression and let out a soft, mocking laugh.
The woman tensed immediately. “What are you laughing at?”
Jian Mo tilted her head slightly. “I’m laughing at you for being a fool. No wonder you were discarded.”
The woman opened her mouth to retort, but before she could speak, a syringe flew from nowhere, plunging deep into her flesh.
Realizing something was wrong, she yanked the syringe out and immediately tried to call for retreat. But the drug inside worked with terrifying speed within a single breath, her consciousness began to blur.
As the world spun, she barely registered what was happening before her vision tilted toward the ground.
In an instant, armed police swarmed into the hallway, surrounding them in the blink of an eye.
The situation had reversed in mere moments. Jian Mo’s restraints were undone, and she slowly walked over to stand before the woman.
“See? I told you, you were a fool. Was I wrong?”
The woman’s consciousness plunged into darkness whether from rage or despair, it didn’t matter.
Jian Mo, however, had no time to dwell on her thoughts. Her expression was grave.
Originally, according to her plan, Jian Li should have appeared as well. After all, she still held evidence in her hands, and if Jian Li didn’t want to be caught, she would surely take the risk to destroy it.
Yet, unexpectedly, Jian Li never showed up nor did Yin Yu, for that matter.
Days earlier, the Yin family had already declared bankruptcy, but Yin Yu had vanished overnight, leaving only the bewildered Ye Shuyao and the furious Yin Feifei behind.
The two of them had been at each other’s throats during this time, their days filled with chaos and strife.
With Yin Yu missing, Yin Feifei had gone somewhat mad after her desperate search yielded no results. Unable to find Yin Yu, she directed all her rage at Ye Shuyao.
After all, she couldn’t retrieve the runaway Yin Yu, but Ye Shuyao was someone she could control.
Thus began Ye Shuyao’s living hell. Every day, she was forced by Yin Feifei to earn money for her to spend. The slightest resistance would earn her a brutal beating Yin Feifei showed no mercy, striking with deadly intent.
Though neither of Ye Shuyao’s two marriages had been perfect, she had never been treated like this before.
Suffering under Yin Feifei’s cruelty, she had to serve her while also working to pay off debts. In just a few short days, she seemed to have aged ten years, her former charm completely gone.
Ye Wenjin knew nothing of this, as Jian Mo hadn’t told her, afraid it would only add to her worries.
But what Jian Mo hadn’t expected was that just as she was about to send someone to investigate Jian Li’s whereabouts, she would suddenly see Ye Wenjin standing behind her.
Jian Mo froze.
Ye Wenjin had run all the way here.
When she heard the police captain announce the operation, she was stunned. The situation at the scene was still unclear wasn’t this just provoking the kidnappers?
She had seen for herself that the kidnappers weren’t the two people they knew.
She had met Jian Li once before, and Yin Yu was even more familiar. Fearing the kidnappers were truly after money, she was terrified that Jian Mo might suffer even the slightest harm.
Just as she was about to voice her concerns, however, Butler Wu stopped her.
“Miss Wenjin, don’t worry. This is the young miss’s intention.”
Ye Wenjin paused. “Sister’s intention? How do you know, Aunt Wu?”
Butler Wu sighed helplessly. “I figured it out. We have a special way of communicating to handle emergencies. The footage from the drone showed the young miss secretly passing a message, which is why I went to tell the captain to act quickly.”
Ye Wenjin didn’t dwell on this, only asking urgently, “Then will Sister be in danger?”
Butler Wu shook her head. “No. Since neither Jian Li nor Yin Yu have appeared, the young miss will be fine.”
Ye Wenjin understood Butler Wu’s meaning and knew Jian Mo was capable, but this wasn’t the kind of situation where someone could simply tell her not to worry and she’d actually feel at ease.
So when the police moved in, she followed, her heart in her throat the entire time, terrified that something might go wrong.
Fortunately, everything went smoothly. Jian Mo was successfully rescued, and the kidnappers were subdued and arrested.
Ye Wenjin could no longer hold back, she needed to see with her own eyes that Jian Mo was unharmed.
But when she finally saw her, she stopped in her tracks.
An inexplicable fury surged in her chest. Ye Wenjin didn’t know where it came from, only that it felt like she was about to explode.
She strode up to Jian Mo, took a deep breath, and demanded, “Why would you take such a risk? Is this what you meant by ‘possible danger’?”
Jian Mo was stunned as she looked at Ye Wenjin, momentarily frozen in place.
This was the first time she had ever seen Ye Wenjin so furious.
