- Chapter 86 - The Car Accident and Jian Mo's Disappearance
Ye Wenjin quickly pieced together all the clues, and a sudden, inexplicable intuition struck her Jian Mo had been taken by someone sent by Jian Li.
With this suspicion in mind, Ye Wenjin immediately informed Butler Wu.
Upon hearing this, Butler Wu, recalling recent events, also found it highly plausible. He promptly pulled strings to access nearby surveillance footage.
However, the accident scene was too chaotic. Even if the cameras were intact and had recorded the incident, certain angles were obstructed, making it impossible to see everything clearly.
Worse still, the obscured parts happened to be the footage involving Jian Mo.
Butler Wu found it too coincidental and asked around about the accident.
He soon learned that the crash appeared to be an accident caused by a driver who suddenly fell unconscious due to a medical emergency, losing control of the steering wheel.
This resulted in the out-of-control vehicle colliding with several cars ahead, triggering a chain-reaction pileup. The situation was exacerbated by a truck in the traffic flow.
During the accident, the driver behind the truck reacted quickly and swerved, but the car hit the guardrail, leaving half of it hanging precariously over the edge.
The vehicles behind, unable to brake in time, crashed into the truck, causing the chain collision.
At the time, Jian Mo’s car was in the middle of the traffic, close to the out-of-control vehicle. Based on the scene, her car must have suffered significant impact.
Yet, there was one puzzling detail, why did Jian Mo’s car catch fire?
Upon closer thought, a fire could only occur if gasoline leaked during the collision.
But the flames had erupted so suddenly and fiercely, which was hard to explain. Why was it only Jian Mo’s car that caught fire?
Logically, other vehicles had suffered worse damage, yet hers was the only one ablaze. No one would believe it was mere coincidence.
Thus, there was only one explanation Jian Mo had been set up. Her car had likely been tampered with beforehand.
Ye Wenjin’s eyes darkened.
Given the intensity of the fire, even if the car didn’t explode, it would eventually be reduced to ashes. Any evidence of tampering would be obliterated.
What a cunning plan.
As all these conjectures flashed through her mind, Ye Wenjin unconsciously clenched her fists, hating her own helplessness.
Beyond speculation, there was nothing she could do now.
She had no news of her sister’s condition or whereabouts, and all she could do was watch the accident scene from afar.
Once again, Ye Wenjin felt utterly powerless.
Time passed slowly as she lowered her gaze, silently waiting for updates from Butler Wu.
Compared to her earlier agitation, her current silence was even more unsettling. Several times, Butler Wu glanced at her, wanting to say something but hesitating.
His eyes were filled with undisguised concern.
Butler Wu sensed that something was off about Ye Wenjin’s state. Her emotions had been so volatile earlier, yet now she was eerily calm. Such drastic mood swings in such a short time couldn’t be good.
But with no leads on Jian Mo’s whereabouts, Butler Wu found himself almost afraid to speak to Ye Wenjin.
Only now did she realize that after spending a long time together, people inevitably take on traces of each other, whether consciously or not.
Because at this moment, Ye Wenjin gave her the same overwhelming sense of oppression as Jian Mo.
Yet, the worry in her heart ultimately prevailed. After much deliberation, Housekeeper Wu decided to speak up, she feared that Ye Wenjin’s current state might lead to undesirable consequences.
If emotions were bottled up without release, the body would eventually suffer the damage.
But just as she was about to speak, the phone rang.
At the sight of the caller ID, Housekeeper Wu’s expression immediately turned serious, it was the person she had entrusted with investigating Jian Mo’s whereabouts.
Ye Wenjin seemed to sense something and turned her gaze toward her, listening intently.
Not daring to delay, Housekeeper Wu quickly answered the call. Whatever news she heard made her glance abruptly at Ye Wenjin.
Ye Wenjin’s eyes flickered slightly. “What is it, Aunt Wu? Any news about my sister?”
After hanging up, Housekeeper Wu hesitated before speaking. “There is some news. The investigator said they carefully reviewed the surveillance footage and found that after the accident, someone took advantage of the chaos to lead Miss Jian away as she struggled out of the car.”
Ye Wenjin’s gaze turned icy. “Did they see the person’s face?”
Housekeeper Wu shook her head, her eyes filled with concern. “No. The accident scene was too chaotic, and the surveillance footage was too unclear. They could only vaguely make out someone taking Miss Jian away, but the person’s exact appearance was impossible to discern.”
Deep down, Ye Wenjin already had an answer, she just wanted confirmation before giving up hope.
Taking a deep breath, she suddenly recalled something and said, “Sister mentioned to me before that she felt she might be in danger. I know her she wouldn’t leave herself completely unprepared. Housekeeper Wu, think carefully. Did she say anything unusual to you or behave strangely in the past few days?”
Housekeeper Wu fell into thought.
She quickly reviewed the details of her recent interactions with Jian Mo, as well as the things she had said, before hesitantly replying, “There was one thing perhaps it could be considered unusual?”
Ye Wenjin pressed urgently, “What was it?”
Housekeeper Wu took a moment to recall before answering, “A couple of days ago, Miss Jian suddenly brought home a set of documents. That file well, it was from a long-abandoned project that had been sealed away. Unless it was being revived, it wouldn’t normally be retrieved.
But Miss Jian never mentioned restarting the project, and I don’t believe she would have.
Because the reason the project was abandoned in the first place was that it had originally been overseen by Miss Jian’s mother, Madam Jian.
After Miss Jian took over the company, she halted the project, and the building remains unfinished to this day.
The strange thing was how Miss Jian treated those documents after bringing them home.”
Here, Housekeeper Wu hesitated again before glancing around and lowering her voice. “Actually, the project was halted because of accounting irregularities. Madam Jian seemed to have been using it to launder money for someone.
So, when Miss Jian took over the company and discovered the discrepancies in the accounts, she immediately shut it down, and the project has been abandoned ever since.
When she suddenly brought those documents home, I initially thought she was just working from home as usual. It wasn’t until later that I realized they were from that defunct project.”
Ye Wenjin was almost certain that the document was problematic. If Jian Mo didn’t intend to restart the project, then it meant there was some message in that document she wanted to convey.
However, the circumstances at the time might not have allowed her to speak directly, forcing her to resort to such an indirect method.
Thinking of this, Ye Wenjin turned to Housekeeper Wu. “Aunt Wu, do you think that document is still at home?”
Housekeeper Wu was taken aback. “I… I’m not sure. But if the young lady didn’t take it with her, then it should still be there.”
The two exchanged a glance and immediately got into the car, rushing back to the villa.
Housekeeper Wu carefully recalled the details.
At the time, Jian Mo had brought back quite a few documents, and she had assumed they were all taken to the study. But that wasn’t the case, the discarded document had been left by Jian Mo in the entertainment room, placed conspicuously on a cabinet.
Since no one dared to move Jian Mo’s things without permission, that document, barring any accidents, should still be in the entertainment room!
Speaking of which, the entertainment room was essentially a small home theater. It used to be the late madam’s favorite room, she loved watching movies and would often spend an entire afternoon there immersed in films during her leisure time.
But after the madam passed away and Miss Mo became busy with company affairs, the home theater was rarely used.
Even so, the maids still cleaned it daily in case the family suddenly decided to use it.
Because of this, when the maid responsible for cleaning came to report that she had seen a document in the home theater, Housekeeper Wu’s first reaction was confusion after all, no one had been in there for a long time.
But when she went to check, she discovered that the document was actually from a long-abandoned project. Unsure of Jian Mo’s intentions, she decided to restrict access to the room, fearing that Jian Mo might have other plans for it.
Only two days had passed since then, so Housekeeper Wu could still recall it clearly.
Connecting it with today’s events, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Miss Mo had anticipated all of this as if she knew what would happen and had prepared in advance.
It was even possible that her current disappearance was partly her own doing.
But Housekeeper Wu didn’t dare voice her suspicions. Her gaze flickered toward Ye Wenjin beside her, and her expression grew troubled.
From the moment Miss Mo went missing until now, Ye Wenjin had appeared calm on the surface. But upon closer observation, Housekeeper Wu noticed the faint tremors in her hands.
Even as she struggled to maintain composure, flashes of panic would occasionally surface in her eyes.
Ye Wenjin wasn’t as composed as she pretended to be.
Housekeeper Wu sighed inwardly, praying for this ordeal to end soon and for Miss Mo to return safely. Otherwise, she couldn’t bear to imagine what would become of Ye Wenjin.
Two people who had finally found their lifelong companions, how could it end like this?
The mere thought made her heart ache.
Upon reflection, she realized that Jian Mo and Ye Wenjin were cut from the same cloth, even sharing similar upbringings.
Yet it was precisely those similar experiences that had allowed them to believe in love and come together.
Housekeeper Wu felt that this was more than just fate.
Having endured so much hardship, she desperately hoped that after all the suffering, they would be granted a happy ending.
As Housekeeper Wu’s thoughts wandered, the car pulled into the villa.
Ye Wenjin rushed in with a single stride, followed closely by Butler Wu, who informed her that the item was in the media room.
Originally assuming it would be in the study, Ye Wenjin abruptly halted and quickly headed to the media room. Sure enough, she spotted a document on the cabinet without much difficulty.
Though it seemed oddly placed out in the open, Ye Wenjin didn’t have time to dwell on it and hurried over to examine it.
As Butler Wu had mentioned, the document indeed recorded a project that had been abruptly halted. However, there was no other information beyond that.
Anxious and puzzled, Ye Wenjin wondered why Jian Mo had singled out this particular document.
After pondering for a while, Butler Wu suddenly realized, “Could it be, that the young lady was trying to tell us the location of this project?”
Ye Wenjin froze. “What?”
Butler Wu mulled it over and concluded that the most obvious clue in the document was the address of the abandoned project. The rest of the information was either too technical or irrelevant.
It was highly possible that Jian Mo intended to hint that there was something unusual about the project’s location.
Unsure but eager to find out, Ye Wenjin quickly flipped through the document and stopped when she found the address. Her gaze sharpened.
Because the location was actually nearby.
It was an unfinished building. When construction first began, people had praised the site, saying that once completed, it would surely attract heavy foot traffic.
Yet no one had expected the project to be halted and left abandoned. To prevent accidents, the building had since been sealed off.
So, could her sister be there?
