After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 67
Ye Wenjin didn’t know how to describe her emotions.
Jian Mo looked like she was in great discomfort, but Butler Wu wasn’t in the villa area and would take time to arrive. Meanwhile, it seemed all Ye Wenjin could do was fret helplessly.
Jian Mo must have been in pain—she had caught the fleeting look of agony on the other woman’s face.
Yet even in such a state, Jian Mo somehow managed to cling to a shred of awareness. The next second, Ye Wenjin heard her voice, broken and intermittent.
“A-Jin, don’t… don’t be afraid. I’m… I’m okay.”
Hearing this, Ye Wenjin’s tears spilled over instantly, large drops falling onto the blanket, quickly soaking the fabric as the wet patch grew larger and larger.
Her vision blurred with tears as she guiltily lowered her gaze.
But when a warm touch brushed her cheek, Ye Wenjin abruptly looked up and saw it was Jian Mo’s hand—reaching out despite her own suffering, trying to comfort her.
She wasn’t sure if it was her own tears or something else, but Jian Mo’s palm felt damp.
Perhaps it was from her crying, but she suspected it was more likely the cold sweat of Jian Mo’s pain.
Even in such discomfort, her sister still sought to reassure her.
And instead of being any help to Jian Mo, she was the one being comforted.
Ye Wenjin felt utterly wretched in that moment. How could someone be as useless as her?
She clasped Jian Mo’s hand and brought it to her lips, pressing a gentle kiss to it, her eyes filled with heartache.
“I’m sorry, sister. It’s my fault. I’m so useless—I can’t do anything to help you…”
But Jian Mo suddenly pulled her hand free and covered Ye Wenjin’s mouth.
“Don’t… say that… A-Jin is the… best, the very best. I know it, so you’re not… allowed to say that anymore.”
Ye Wenjin blinked, bewildered. “But I—”
Jian Mo pinched her lips shut, refusing to let her speak, her gaze firm and stubborn, as if warning Ye Wenjin that she’d be angry if she continued.
Ye Wenjin quickly nodded, signaling she wouldn’t say another word. Even so, the guilt in her heart didn’t lessen in the slightest.
Jian Mo, however, seemed to read her thoughts. She exhaled softly and said, “A-Jin, don’t… be so hard on yourself. No one’s perfect… You’re already doing… so well.”
Ye Wenjin knew she was being consoled, and that only made her feel worse.
Not wanting to distract Jian Mo any further with her own emotions, she quickly composed herself, wiping away her tears before looking up with a smile. “I understand, sister. Don’t talk anymore—does it hurt badly?”
Jian Mo was indeed in pain. It felt as though her pheromones had turned into tiny needles, pricking her relentlessly, while at the same time, she craved Ye Wenjin’s pheromones desperately.
Yet whenever the other’s pheromones reached her, her own grew even more agitated, intensifying the stabbing pain.
So much so that she didn’t notice the strain in Ye Wenjin’s expression. Hearing her words, Jian Mo simply felt overwhelmingly exhausted.
But seeing Jian Mo drowsy, her eyes fluttering shut, Ye Wenjin panicked. She didn’t know whether Jian Mo was simply tired or on the verge of passing out, so she couldn’t let her close her eyes.
At this moment, the mere thought of Jian Mo closing her eyes in front of her made Ye Wenjin feel a tightness in her chest.
So she quickly racked her brain, thought of something, and began talking to Jian Mo incessantly.
“Big sister, please don’t fall asleep yet, okay? Just wait a little longer? Aunt Wu is bringing the doctor over. Don’t sleep now—wait for them, okay?”
“Or maybe we could chat for a bit? Don’t you want to talk to me? To be honest, I still don’t know much about you. Don’t you want to learn more about me?”
She rambled on for a while but received no response from Jian Mo. A sudden panic gripped Ye Wenjin’s heart, and she quickly looked up, only to find Jian Mo’s eyes open, though lacking energy.
Ye Wenjin froze for a moment before hesitantly saying, “Big sister?”
Jian Mo suddenly smiled. “I was just… thinking about the first time I met you.”
Ye Wenjin let out a sigh of relief, then awkwardly lowered her voice to explain, “Back then, I was accidentally drugged, so the circumstances of our meeting weren’t exactly pleasant…”
But Jian Mo fell silent again, simply staring at Ye Wenjin as if lost in thought.
Ye Wenjin looked at her in confusion, waiting for her to speak, but it wasn’t until a while later that she heard Jian Mo slowly hum in response.
She was baffled and wanted to ask, but for some reason, under Jian Mo’s gaze, she found herself unable to speak, her eyes flickering away.
And so, she missed the fleeting, unreadable emotion that flashed through Jian Mo’s eyes.
Fortunately, Jian Mo soon replied, and Ye Wenjin didn’t dwell on it further.
To keep Jian Mo from passing out, Ye Wenjin kept talking to her intermittently, mostly sharing amusing stories she’d heard at school.
There weren’t actually that many, since she only occasionally overheard Chu Yunsheng gossiping when she returned to the dorm to rest.
Before, she had only half-listened to the gossip, but now that she needed it, Ye Wenjin regretted not paying more attention—otherwise, she wouldn’t be recounting the stories so awkwardly.
Though her storytelling was halting, Jian Mo was gracious enough to indulge her.
Thanks to the power of gossip, Jian Mo never closed her eyes, though she looked increasingly weak.
Finally, sounds came from downstairs—Aunt Wu had arrived with the doctor.
Ye Wenjin let out a deep sigh of relief.
Only when the doctor entered the room to examine Jian Mo did Ye Wenjin have time to explain the situation in detail to Aunt Wu.
Even as she spoke, her face remained etched with worry.
After hearing the explanation, the housekeeper’s expression darkened. She had already considered that Jian Mo might experience hormonal imbalances, and with her heat arriving early, there was a risk of complications. That was why she had specifically instructed Ye Wenjin to notify her immediately if anything happened.
But she hadn’t expected it to actually occur.
Unfortunately, though the doctor had arrived, the villa lacked professional medical equipment, so only a basic diagnosis could be performed.
If the situation was truly dire, they would have to take her to the hospital as soon as possible.
The housekeeper mulled this over, her expression growing increasingly grave.
Seeing this, Ye Wenjin grew even more anxious, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on the door as she waited nervously for the doctor to emerge.
Time passed slowly until, at last, the doctor came out. Through the crack in the door, Ye Wenjin caught a glimpse of Jian Mo sleeping peacefully before shifting her gaze to hear what the doctor had to say.
However, the doctor’s first words made Ye Wenjin’s heart skip a beat.
“Without equipment here, the diagnosis might not be entirely accurate, but it seems Jian □□su’s symptoms have worsened.”
The doctor frowned as she spoke. “Actually, based on the previous treatment progress, her pheromone disorder had already improved significantly. It should have been cured soon, but her heat cycle was suddenly triggered prematurely. The frequency of your pheromone exchanges has been too high, so I suspect…”
“Miss Jian might… develop an excessive dependence on Miss Ye’s pheromones for some time. It could even affect her daily life.”
After hearing the doctor’s words, both of them froze for a moment.
It was Butler Wu, with her wealth of experience, who reacted first. “Is there a solution?”
The doctor hesitated briefly. “We’ll need to see the test results for specifics, but… the best solution would actually be…”
Butler Wu pressed urgently, “What method?”
The doctor glanced at Ye Wenjin before answering, “A permanent mark.”
Seeing the stunned expressions on their faces, she quickly explained, “Whether it’s the disorder or the dependency, these issues are relatively easy to resolve because a permanent mark stabilizes an Omega’s condition—except during heat cycles. Moreover, Miss Ye and Miss Jian have a very high pheromone compatibility. A permanent mark would benefit both of them.”
At this, neither Ye Wenjin nor Butler Wu spoke. Their expressions flickered with hesitation.
The doctor observed their reactions and sighed inwardly, piecing things together.
She knew a little about Jian Mo’s past.
When Jian Mo first developed pheromone disorder, it had been her mentor who took the case. Back then, she was just an intern, and Jian Mo was only in her teens.
Yet, during her differentiation, Jian Mo had suffered severe trauma, nearly failing the process. Even after succeeding, she was left with pheromone disorder, which flared up intermittently. Despite this, she insisted on relying solely on medication, even though an Alpha’s assistance would have eased her suffering significantly.
The doctor couldn’t fathom how she had endured it all these years.
So when she later learned that Jian Mo had found a partner—one with such high compatibility—she had been relieved, thinking Jian Mo would finally be free from the torment of her disorder.
Who could have predicted this turn of events? Leaving aside whether Jian Mo herself could accept a permanent mark, the doctor sensed that Miss Ye didn’t seem too willing either.
She couldn’t help but feel curious. After all, for an Alpha, the instinct to permanently mark their Omega was deeply ingrained in their genes. Yet, she hadn’t missed the hesitation on Miss Ye’s face—she looked troubled.
Could it be… that Miss Ye didn’t love Jian Mo?
The doctor was startled by her own speculation. Seeing both women lost in thought, she decisively chose to take her leave.
The affairs of the wealthy were best left unknown. After all… secrets were called secrets for a reason.
Though she was curious, her curiosity wasn’t strong enough to pry. Just piecing together these unconfirmed theories made her feel like she already knew too much—so she hurried to make her exit.
“Oh, by the way, I administered medication to Miss Jian. She’ll be drowsy for an hour or two—no need to worry too much. But it would be best to get a thorough check-up.”
Ye Wenjin nodded absentmindedly, still dazed.
She had heard the doctor’s instructions, but her attention remained fixated on the mention of a permanent mark.
She doubted herself—why hadn’t she felt joy upon hearing about the permanent mark? Instead, she felt…
Fear.
She was afraid of the permanent mark, afraid of the unknown it represented, and afraid of causing harm to Jian Mo. That was why she had never even considered it.
Even after the doctor left, Ye Wenjin remained lost in thought.
Housekeeper Wu was also stunned at first, but she quickly regained her composure. When she noticed Ye Wenjin’s distant expression, she sighed inwardly.
It was clear to her that Miss Wenjin didn’t seem to want to permanently mark Miss Momo.
This went against the instincts of an Alpha. Though she didn’t know the full story, she could guess that the hesitation likely stemmed from Miss Wenjin’s mother.
In just a few seconds, Housekeeper Wu had considered many things. But despite her thoughts, she didn’t voice them now.
For one, it wasn’t the right time. And besides, this wasn’t something to discuss at the moment—at least not until Jian Mo woke up.
So Housekeeper Wu quickly suppressed her thoughts and turned to Ye Wenjin with a gentle tone. “Miss Wenjin, given the circumstances, I think we should take Miss Momo to the hospital for a thorough examination as soon as possible. What do you think?”
Ye Wenjin snapped back to reality and hurriedly agreed. “Yes, she should get checked. Let’s go now. We can’t delay this any longer.”
The sooner they identified the problem, the sooner they could address it. Even if…
Her thoughts trailed off, hesitation creeping in again.
But for Jian Mo’s sake, she couldn’t afford to hesitate now.
Housekeeper Wu immediately arranged for a car, while Ye Wenjin went to change Jian Mo’s clothes before rushing to the hospital.
However, the examination results aligned closely with the doctor’s initial assessment. Jian Mo’s condition had been triggered by an inducer that forced her into an early heat cycle. Such inducers had side effects and were classified as banned substances.
Even though Jian Mo hadn’t inhaled much, the damage to her body was irreversible.
The fact that she had only developed a concurrent hormone dependency disorder was already fortunate. But the only way to cure it completely was to establish a permanent mark.
Otherwise, she would have to rely on medication to manage the symptoms, suffering periodic flare-ups.
The condition wasn’t severe, but it was tormenting.
After reading the report, Ye Wenjin fell silent.
Her emotions were a tangled mess, leaving her feeling lost.
She had never planned to form such a bond with anyone—her relationship with Jian Mo had started by accident.
Falling for her had been effortless, but Ye Wenjin had never considered a permanent mark. To her, it felt like a form of restraint and confinement for Omegas.
This mindset seemed out of place among Alphas, but she didn’t see anything wrong with it.
Yet she couldn’t bear to see Jian Mo suffer from recurring episodes either…
Ye Wenjin sat blankly by Jian Mo’s bedside, her gaze hollow and distant.
The first thing Jian Mo saw upon opening her eyes was this scene. Her memory still lingered on the doctor entering the room, but now, gazing at the stark white ceiling and catching the faint scent of disinfectant, she realized she was in the hospital.
“Ah Jin, what’s wrong?”
Her voice was hoarse, likely from not drinking water for a long time.
Ye Wenjin jolted awake at the sound, her face lighting up with joy when she saw Jian Mo was conscious. “Sister, you’re awake! Do you need water?”
She had noticed the rasp in Jian Mo’s voice and soon received a confirming nod.
After finishing a cup of warm water, the hoarseness in Jian Mo’s speech faded considerably.
She studied Ye Wenjin thoughtfully and said, “Ah Jin, something’s troubling you.”
Ye Wenjin froze, not even registering the sudden change in how she was addressed.
She didn’t know how to respond, abruptly standing up and stammering, “I… I’ll go get Aunt Wu.”
Jian Mo silently watched her flee, her brow furrowing.
So, what exactly had happened?
