After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 6
The meal was served in their hotel room. Ye Wenjin had initially thought they would go out to eat, but to her surprise, Jian Mo had arranged for the food to be delivered directly to the room.
This came as a relief to Ye Wenjin. Since the two of them were still unfamiliar with each other, going out for a meal together would have made her feel extremely awkward.
Moreover, the hotel’s dining area was likely crowded. If she were to appear in public with Jian Mo…
Ye Wenjin shuddered at the thought. Even though Jian Mo had accepted her proposal, Ye Wenjin believed she was unworthy of her. Being seen together would undoubtedly invite gossip and criticism toward Jian Mo.
She didn’t want that to happen.
Fortunately, they didn’t go out, and Ye Wenjin slowly let out the breath she had been holding.
However…
Now that they were alone in the room, the tension Ye Wenjin had just eased began creeping back in.
The atmosphere was too quiet during the meal, with neither of them speaking.
Ye Wenjin occasionally stole glances at Jian Mo. Her expression remained indifferent as she ate unhurriedly, taking measured bites of rice and dishes in a very orderly manner. However… she seemed somewhat picky.
Ye Wenjin noticed the moment Jian Mo’s chopsticks accidentally touched a piece of cilantro. Though her expression remained unchanged, her delicate brows furrowed slightly before she calmly withdrew her chopsticks and wiped them with a napkin.
It seemed she detested it to the point where even accidental contact was unbearable.
Ye Wenjin observed quietly, trying to learn more about Jian Mo’s preferences.
By the end of the meal, she had successfully deduced that Jian Mo disliked anything with a strong or pungent taste cilantro, scallions, and the like.
Her preferences, on the other hand, were clear: she favored mild flavors and apparently couldn’t handle spicy food.
Ye Wenjin took note of this silently.
Twenty minutes later, the meal concluded, and as promised, Jian Mo prepared to take Ye Wenjin back.
As the scenery outside the car window blurred past, Ye Wenjin debated whether she should return to the Yin family home.
Weekends were supposed to be rest days, but Yin Yu rarely took breaks, often spending her days at the company. Even Yin Feifei was frequently dragged along. After all, as the heir, competence was paramount.
If Yin Feifei proved too incompetent, the company’s shareholders would be the first to object.
Of course, it was also possible that the shareholders preferred an heir who was easy to manipulate.
But none of that concerned Ye Wenjin. After some deliberation, she decided that returning to the Yin household now would be too risky.
Flashes of last night’s events replayed in her mind. Ye Wenjin was certain Yin Feifei had been involved otherwise, she wouldn’t have tried to take her away upon hearing she was unwell.
As for Yin Yu…
At the time, it had been unclear, but now, things might be different.
So Ye Wenjin ultimately decided against returning to the Yin residence. She glanced at Jian Mo, who sat quietly beside her, and hesitated for a moment.
“What is it?”
Jian Mo’s sudden question startled her, but once she processed the words, Ye Wenjin nervously fiddled with her fingers and whispered, “I… don’t want to go back to the Yin family right now.”
Jian Mo didn’t ask why. She simply nodded. “Mm.”
Ye Wenjin fidgeted uneasily, opening her mouth as if to explain but finding no words. In the end, she stayed silent.
However, she noticed the driver had adjusted the route they were now heading toward her university. A wave of relief washed over her.
Returning to the Yin household now was definitely not a good idea. Staying at school, where there were plenty of people around, would at least be safer than being at the Yin residence.
Although she suspected it was related to Yin Feifei, Ye Wenjin couldn’t figure out exactly when Yin Feifei had spiked her drink. Moreover, the glass had been handed to her by a waiter at Mrs. Lin’s direction, could Mrs. Lin have been the one to drug it?
That didn’t make much sense.
Ye Wenjin didn’t know the truth, but she did know one thing.
From now on, she had no family.
She used to be naive, believing that Ye Shuyao still loved her, that even if Yin Yu and Yin Feifei disliked her, they wouldn’t harm her. She had clung to the hope that as long as she didn’t cause trouble, things would be fine.
But now, that was no longer possible.
Ye Wenjin lowered her gaze, her expression subdued, and thus failed to notice the gaze fixed on her from beside her.
The car was silent, the atmosphere heavy.
The driver glanced at the two through the rearview mirror but quickly averted his eyes, not daring to look again.
Something felt… off.
Still, his employer’s affairs were none of his business. Best not to meddle.
The car arrived at the school gates in silence, and Ye Wenjin finally exhaled in relief.
Sharing a confined space with Jian Mo was too much for her mainly because both of them still carried traces of each other’s lingering pheromones, so thoroughly intertwined that it felt unbearably intimate.
Her low spirits didn’t last long before the remnants of Jian Mo’s scent tugged at her senses. Though Ye Wenjin reminded herself not to dwell on it, her thoughts kept straying, involuntarily drawn to Jian Mo.
Just the thought that the other woman still carried traces of her pheromones made Ye Wenjin’s emotions complicated flustered yet restrained, afraid of seeming presumptuous.
Fortunately, Jian Mo remained silent the entire time, as still as a jade statue, barely betraying any emotion.
After murmuring a quiet goodbye, Ye Wenjin finally stepped out of the car. Watching the vehicle drive away, she turned to head back to her dorm, only to find Rong Yunshu standing behind her.
“Yunshu? What are you doing at the school gate?”
Rong Yunshu glanced at the departing car before smiling gently. “I just got back from outside and saw you getting out of the car. Thought it looked like you, so I came over to check and it really is you. By the way, didn’t your aunt say you had a cold? Are you better now?”
Ye Wenjin’s smile stiffened slightly, and she nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine now.”
Rong Yunshu caught something in her expression but held back from asking further.
A shadow flickered in her eyes, but she said nothing more, simply linking arms with Ye Wenjin. “Let’s go back to the dorm together. You’re back just in time, there’s a treat waiting for you.”
Ye Wenjin instinctively tensed at the contact but was distracted by her words, a hint of delight surfacing in her eyes. “Did your mom make walnut cookies again?”
Rong Yunshu grinned and nodded. “Bingo. As a reward, you can have an extra piece later.”
Ye Wenjin brightened momentarily, but then, remembering her diet, her smile dimmed. “I’ll just have a small taste.”
Rong Yunshu’s smile faltered briefly before she nodded casually. “Right, I forgot you’re watching your weight. What a shame.”
Ye Wenjin agreed, it really was a shame, because Rong Yunshu’s mother’s walnut cookies were absolutely delicious!
Every time Rong Yunshu brought them, she couldn’t resist eating two, only to feel guilty afterward and rush to the dance studio to burn off the calories for forty minutes.
However, recently she needed to maintain a leaner weight, so she could only take a bite of this walnut pastry.
She thought with some regret.
When she returned to the dorm and found the other two were there, Ye Wenjin felt a bit surprised.
Chu Yunsheng always went home every weekend without fail, yet this week she hadn’t left. And Zhou Wuhuan, who would usually be buried in the library grinding away, was rarely in the dorm, today was an unusual gathering.
The moment Ye Wenjin appeared, everyone looked her way.
Hearing the door open, Chu Yunsheng poked her head out from her bed. “Wenjin? You’re back? Did your cold get better?”
Ye Wenjin nodded and smiled but didn’t say much.
Seeing her nod, Zhou Wuhuan averted her gaze.
Rong Yunshu, who had been walking behind her, had initially looked up to say something but was immediately distracted by the sight of the scent-blocking patch on the back of Ye Wenjin’s neck. In her shock, she didn’t even have time to think before blurting out,
“Wenjin? Is that a scent-blocking patch on your neck? Did you undergo a secondary differentiation?”
Her tone was unmistakably delighted, and the moment she spoke, the other two’s attention snapped back.
Chu Yunsheng’s eyes widened as she rolled off her bed in one swift motion.
“What? You had a secondary differentiation? Into what? Alpha or Omega?”
She was genuinely stunned. After all, once someone differentiated into a secondary gender, if they were an Alpha, they usually wouldn’t need a scent-blocking patch. Only Omegas were required to wear them to prevent their pheromones from triggering compatible Alphas into a rut.
And now, Ye Wenjin was wearing a scent-blocking patch!
Before Ye Wenjin could even speak, Chu Yunsheng gasped, “Wenjin, you turned into an Omega?! Does that mean you’ll have to move out?! No way!”
Ye Wenjin: “…”
Though she was touched by their reluctance to see her go, couldn’t they at least let her finish?
One of them seemed lost in thought, while the other was rambling excitedly Ye Wenjin could feel her headache returning.
If Zhou Wuhuan hadn’t finally had enough of the noise and manually silenced Chu Yunsheng, it might have taken even longer for the room to quiet down.
Finally, Ye Wenjin could explain. “Calm down. I did undergo secondary differentiation, but it’s into an Alpha. Don’t worry, I won’t be moving out.”
Her words were brief and clear, answering all their questions at once.
Chu Yunsheng let out a long sigh of relief. “Good, good. If you left, the dorm would have to assign someone new, and that would be so awkward.”
Ye Wenjin chuckled. “Don’t worry, I’ll probably—”
She had been about to say she’d likely stay until graduation, but then a sudden thought crossed her mind.
If she and Jian Mo got married, would they live together?
Once the idea took hold, the lingering memories of last night’s intimate moments flashed through her mind. Ye Wenjin’s voice trailed off, and her face slowly turned red.
Chu Yunsheng: “?”
Zhou Wuhuan: “??”
Both of them stared at Ye Wenjin in confusion, unsure why she had suddenly become shy.
Chu Yunsheng blinked blankly before instinctively turning to discuss the matter with someone only to see Rong Yunshu’s completely expressionless face.
“What the—? What’s wrong with you? I didn’t do anything to you, okay?”
Chu Yunsheng initially thought she had somehow offended this sister, but to her surprise, Rong Yunshu was acting completely out of character today, she didn’t even bicker with her!
Something was off. Something was extremely off!
Chu Yunsheng studied her with a thoughtful gaze, only to meet Rong Yunshu’s indifferent stare in return.
Though it pained her to admit it, she was genuinely startled.
After a brief pause, Chu Yunsheng subtly edged closer to Zhou Wuhuan for cover.
Zhou Wuhuan glanced at her, then at Rong Yunshu, adjusting her glasses without a word. Yet, she instinctively shielded Chu Yunsheng a little more.
Ye Wenjin remained entirely oblivious to the undercurrents between the three, still lost in her own thoughts.
But no matter how much she mulled it over, the idea of living with Jian Mo felt far too thrilling. Taking a deep breath, she suppressed those thoughts for now, tucking them away in the depths of her heart.
Yet every shift in her expression was captured perfectly in Rong Yunshu’s eyes.
She averted her gaze and lowered her lashes.
How could she be an Alpha?
