After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 59
Even after they had cycled a considerable distance away, Ye Wenjin still felt somewhat dazed.
Because she had been distracted earlier, gossiping with Chu Yunsheng, she had no idea what had happened afterward.
She had initially thought there would be another argument or even a fight, but they had just left like that?
That girl named Tong Tong didn’t seem like the type to back down easily, yet she had just let them go?
Ye Wenjin couldn’t figure it out. She had wanted to ask, but the atmosphere had been off since earlier. Hesitating, she didn’t dare to voice her question and could only keep stealing glances at Jian Mo, her eyes full of silent pleading.
Chu Yunsheng seemed to sense something. After glancing between the two of them, she decisively sped off on her bike, leaving them behind in the blink of an eye.
In no time, the two of them were alone, the others having cycled far ahead.
Ye Wenjin looked at the distant backs of the group ahead, then at Jian Mo, who remained silent beside her.
After wrestling with herself, she finally couldn’t hold back any longer and cautiously asked, “Sister? What happened just now? You seem upset—did that person say something to make you unhappy?”
Jian Mo paused slightly and glanced in Ye Wenjin’s direction. The coolness in her expression softened instantly when she noticed the eager look in her eyes, and her heart melted.
With a light sigh, she stopped her bike. Seeing this, Ye Wenjin quickly stopped as well.
“Xiao Jin, if you want to know something about me, I hope you’ll ask me directly, okay?”
Ye Wenjin was taken aback. “Sister?”
Jian Mo’s tone and demeanor were gentle. “I don’t want you to learn about me from someone else’s mouth. Whatever you want to know, as long as you ask, I’ll tell you.”
A faint smile curled her lips. “If you’re interested, Xiao Jin, after our trip, you can come to the company with me. If you’d like, you can even experience things firsthand.”
Ye Wenjin’s eyes widened gradually. “Go to the company? Me? What could I possibly experience?”
Amusement flickered in Jian Mo’s eyes. “Xiao Jin doesn’t want to go?”
Ye Wenjin hurriedly shook her head. “Of course I want to go! I mean—can I really visit?”
She asked cautiously, afraid that her presence might cause trouble for Jian Mo.
But Jian Mo suddenly laughed. “Why not? Xiao Jin is my wife. What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine—there’s no distinction between us. Unless… you’re unwilling and want to draw a line between us?”
By the end, her voice had grown so light it seemed ready to drift away with the wind.
Ye Wenjin was instantly alarmed and shook her head vigorously. “Of course not! Sister is absolutely right—we’re wives, so what’s mine is naturally yours too. It’s just… this feels unfair to you. I… I don’t have anything.”
No matter how you looked at it, this marriage was unequal. The gap between them was too vast, and anyone would say she was reaching beyond her station by being with Jian Mo.
Ye Wenjin was acutely aware of this, yet she couldn’t deny the overwhelming joy that surged in her heart upon hearing Jian Mo’s words.
That happiness spread through her, filling her with delight even as it mingled with unease.
But Jian Mo’s expression softened further at Ye Wenjin’s words. “Xiao Jin, who said you don’t have anything?”
Ye Wenjin looked at her, puzzled. “Sister?”
Jian Mo didn’t say anything more, simply stating, “As far as I’m concerned, Xiao Jin, you can do whatever you want to do here. I’ll support you unconditionally.”
Ye Wenjin’s heart trembled, filled with a surge of warmth, her emotions swelling beyond measure.
She knew—she had always known—that Jian Mo wholeheartedly supported her choices.
Even if she hadn’t thought much about it at first, after meeting with Teacher Mei, she understood Jian Mo’s intentions.
Taking her to watch Teacher Mei’s performance was one thing, but the main purpose was to have dinner with Teacher Mei.
If it weren’t for her, Jian Mo wouldn’t have reached out to Teacher Mei.
She hadn’t been in contact with Teacher Mei for so long, perhaps precisely because Teacher Mei was close friends with her mother, and Jian Mo feared being overwhelmed by memories.
Yet after all these years, Jian Mo reconnected—Ye Wenjin knew very well it was because of her, because she had mentioned wanting to join Teacher Mei’s dance troupe.
But Jian Mo also respected her immensely, never presuming to make decisions for her or leveraging her connection with Teacher Mei to secure her a spot in the troupe. They simply had a meal together, leaving an impression on Teacher Mei.
Without this, she would have had to work much harder to catch Teacher Mei’s attention.
And all of this was thanks to Jian Mo.
Ye Wenjin knew her own personality well—she didn’t want to take shortcuts, didn’t want to rely on connections, believing everything should be earned through ability.
That was how naive and stubborn she had been before, but clearly, her thinking had been too simplistic.
Even just the lead dancer selection had caused so much trouble. If it weren’t for Jian Mo, she might have lost her chance to lead, or even been disqualified from performing altogether.
Jian Mo treated her so well—so well that Ye Wenjin often wondered if she truly deserved such kindness.
After all, from the very beginning, she had proposed marriage to Jian Mo primarily to escape the Yin family.
Even now, she didn’t understand why Jian Mo had agreed, but that didn’t stop her from feeling that she and Jian Mo were mismatched.
Not just because of their family backgrounds, but because her initial motives hadn’t been pure.
Ye Wenjin took a deep breath and said softly, “Jiejie, you’re too good to me.”
Jian Mo smiled faintly, not refuting her, and simply reached out to pat her head. “Let’s go, Xiao Jin. The others are already out of sight.”
Ye Wenjin nodded firmly, pushing down the thoughts swirling in her heart.
Fortunately, they didn’t run into Tong Tong’s group again during the rest of their outing, and everyone had a great time. But by the time the afternoon ended, exhaustion set in, and they realized just how drained they were.
The day before had been physical fatigue—now it was mental exhaustion.
After all, they had been riding high on excitement for too long, and now everyone was feeling listless.
So, after dinner, they all returned to their rooms early to rest and prepare for the next day’s activities.
According to their itinerary, they would be enjoying water-based amusement activities next. Some were mild enough for Jian Mo to participate in, but others were more thrilling and beyond her capabilities.
During breakfast, they discussed how to adjust their plans for the day, but before they could finalize anything, Jian Mo’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone instinctively lowered their voices, but when Ye Wenjin glanced over, she noticed Jian Mo’s brows furrow slightly. Sensing something might be wrong, she tensed up and watched her anxiously.
After Jian Mo finished her phone call, Ye Wenjin couldn’t wait to ask, “Sister, what’s wrong? Is something the matter?”
Thinking about the call she had just received, Jian Mo sighed helplessly, “There’s a bit of an issue. There’s a charity gala I can’t get out of attending, and coincidentally, it’s being held right here.”
“A charity gala?” Ye Wenjin said, surprised.
Jian Mo nodded. “Yes, it’s quite an important one, so I have to go. Xiaojin, come with me this afternoon.”
Ye Wenjin quickly nodded, but then suddenly remembered something and hesitated before looking up. “What about you, Yunshu?”
Rong Yunshu waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about us. You two go ahead. Today’s activities were a bit too thrilling anyway, so now we don’t have to debate it anymore.”
Ye Wenjin also recalled this point. She had originally planned to skip the more extreme activities to keep Jian Mo company, but this unexpected turn of events had conveniently resolved the issue.
“But… I’ve never been to a charity gala before. Will I… be okay?” Ye Wenjin asked hesitantly.
She had attended some regular banquets before, and though she hadn’t been entirely comfortable at first, she had grown accustomed to them over time. However, she had no experience with charity galas and was worried about whether she could adapt.
Jian Mo reassured her, “Xiaojin, don’t doubt yourself so easily. Besides, I’ll be there with you, so there’s no need to worry too much.”
Chu Yunsheng glanced at the two of them, a smile spreading across her face. “Oh, Wenjin, don’t overthink it. I actually find charity galas more fun than regular parties. You’ll understand once you go.”
After all, there were so many celebrities, and the gossip was always fresh. If luck was on your side, you might even witness some dramatic confrontations.
Chu Yunsheng particularly enjoyed the auction segment, where guests contributed all sorts of fascinating items, offering a glimpse into different worlds. Sometimes, the items themselves weren’t the main attraction—what mattered was who had donated them, and this often led to some entertaining moments.
At its core, a charity gala was about raising funds through various means to support charitable causes. However, some people exploited the charity angle to collect money without actually using it for good causes—though such schemes would collapse once exposed.
But the gala Jian Mo mentioned was different. It had a long-standing reputation, transparent fund allocation, and was genuinely dedicated to charity, not just a front for fundraising. Given Jian Mo’s wealth and social standing, it was no surprise she had been invited.
Still, Chu Yunsheng would rather keep enjoying their vacation. They were supposed to be relaxing, after all!
Hearing Chu Yunsheng’s words, Ye Wenjin didn’t feel reassured—instead, she grew even more nervous. Was she really qualified to attend such a high-profile event?
Ye Wenjin began to doubt herself again.
Jian Mo patted her hand gently, a hint of exasperation in her tone. “Alright, stop overthinking it. Let’s enjoy ourselves for now, and we’ll head over later.”
Ye Wenjin obediently nodded, took a deep breath, and decided to set aside her worries about the gala for the time being, focusing instead on having fun with everyone.
The day was filled with thrilling water activities—things like flyboarding, parasailing, and wakeboarding. Just hearing about them piqued Ye Wenjin’s interest.
When you’re having fun, time flies, and before they knew it, it was already time to leave. Though reluctant, Ye Wenjin obediently went with Jian Mo to get ready—hair, makeup, and all—to prepare for the evening’s gala.
During the styling session, Ye Wenjin looked at the photos sent by Chu Yunsheng, her eyes filled with envy. However, after just a few more glances, she put her phone down.
Jian Mo noticed and asked softly, “Xiao Jin, feeling disappointed?”
Ye Wenjin shook her head slightly. “I really wanted to go, but it’s fine.” Then she turned to Jian Mo. “I’d rather go with you, sis—so, next time, can we go on a trip together, just the two of us?”
Seeing the anticipation in her eyes, Jian Mo couldn’t help but smile. “Sure, we’ll plan a trip together soon.”
At that, Ye Wenjin instantly brightened up.
Once the makeup and styling were done, it was almost time. Ye Wenjin and Jian Mo arrived at the banquet venue together, but the moment they stepped inside, she was stunned.
Ye Wenjin truly hadn’t expected to see so many celebrities at a charity gala—and most of them were faces she recognized.
She gasped, “There are so many stars here?”
Jian Mo glanced around before looking away, casually asking, “Any favorites? You could go ask for an autograph.”
Ye Wenjin didn’t notice the look in her eyes but still shook her head. “No, I don’t really follow celebrities.”
Jian Mo’s expression softened instantly. The corners of her lips curled slightly as she gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment.
Still, with so many stars around, Ye Wenjin couldn’t help but feel intrigued. Her gaze wandered through the crowd, and every time she spotted a familiar face, she’d whisper in excitement and lean in to share it with Jian Mo.
Until her eyes landed on an unexpected figure—and she froze.
“Yin Yu?”
Jian Mo followed her gaze, her own eyes gradually darkening, yet without a trace of surprise, as if she had known all along.
But Ye Wenjin didn’t notice at all. Frowning at the figure in the distance, her enthusiasm instantly faded.
